Joint User Association and Resource Allocation for Tailored QoS Provisioning in 6G HetNets

The proliferation of wireless-enabled applications with divergent quality of service (QoS) requirements necessitates tailored QoS provisioning. With the growing complexity of wireless infrastructures, application-specific QoS perceived by a user equipment (UE) is jointly determined by its association with the supporting base station in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and the amount of resource allocated to it. However, conventional application-agnostic objective-based user association and resource allocation often ignore the differences among applications' specific requirements for resources, inevitably preventing tailored QoS provisioning. Hence, in this paper, the problem of joint user association and resource allocation with application-specific objectives is investigated for achieving tailored QoS provisioning in 6G HetNets. This problem is intrinsically difficult to solve directly due to the extremely large solution space and the combination of discrete and continuous variables. Therefore, we decompose the original problem into two subproblems, i.e. user association and resource allocation, and propose an interactive optimization algorithm (IOA) to solve them iteratively in an interactive way until convergence is achieved. Specifically, matching theory is utilized to solve resource allocation and user association is solved heuristically. Extensive experimental results confirm that IOA algorithm outperforms several baseline algorithms in terms of both average utility and UE satisfaction ratio.

Semantic Extraction Model Selection for IoT Devices in Edge-assisted Semantic Communications

Semantic communications offer the potential to alleviate communication loads by exchanging meaningful information. However, semantic extraction (SE) is computationally intensive, posing challenges for resource-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To address this, leveraging computing resources at the edge servers (ESs) is essential. ESs can support multiple SE models for various tasks, making it crucial to select appropriate SE models based on diverse requirements of IoT devices and limited ES computing resources. In this letter, we study an SE model selection problem, where the ES co-located at the access point can provide multiple SE models to execute the uploaded SE tasks of associated IoT devices. We aim to maximize the total semantic rate of all SE tasks by selecting appropriate SE models, while considering SE delay and ES capacity constraints, and SE accuracy requirements. The formulated NP-complete integer programming problem is transformed into a modified Knapsack problem. The proposed efficient approximation algorithm using dynamic programming can yield a guaranteed near-optimum solution. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of proposed solution.

Enabling Deep Learning-based Physical-layer Secret Key Generation for FDD-OFDM Systems in Multi-Environments

Deep learning-based physical-layer secret key generation (PKG) has been used to overcome the imperfect uplink/downlink channel reciprocity in frequency division duplexing (FDD) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. However, existing efforts have focused on key generation for users in a specific environment where the training samples and test samples follow the same distribution, which is unrealistic for real-world applications. This paper formulates the PKG problem in multiple environments as a learning-based problem by learning the knowledge such as data and models from known environments to generate keys quickly and efficiently in multiple new environments. Specifically, we propose deep transfer learning (DTL) and meta-learning-based channel feature mapping algorithms for key generation. The two algorithms use different training methods to pre-train the model in the known environments, and then quickly adapt and deploy the model to new environments. Simulation and experimental results show that compared with the methods without adaptation, the DTL and meta-learning algorithms both can improve the performance of generated keys. In addition, the complexity analysis shows that the meta-learning algorithm can achieve better performance than the DTL algorithm with less cost.

QoE-oriented Dependent Task Scheduling under Multi-dimensional QoS Constraints over Distributed Networks

Task scheduling as an effective strategy can improve application performance on computing resource-limited devices over distributed networks. However, existing evaluation mechanisms fail to depict the complexity of diverse applications, which involve dependencies among tasks, computing resource requirements, and multi-dimensional quality of service (QoS) constraints. Furthermore, traditional QoS-oriented task scheduling strategies struggle to meet the performance requirements without considering differences in satisfaction and acceptance of application, leading application failures and resource wastage. To tackle these issues, a quality of experience (QoE) cost model is designed to evaluate application completion, depicting the relationship among application satisfaction, communications, and computing resources in the distributed networks. Specifically, considering the sensitivity and preference of QoS, we model the different dimensional QoS degradation cost functions for dependent tasks, which are then integrated into the QoE cost model. Based on the QoE model, the dependent task scheduling problem is formulated as the minimization of overall QoE cost, aiming to improve the application performance in the distributed networks, which is proven Np-hard. Moreover, a heuristic Hierarchical Multi-queue Task Scheduling Algorithm (HMTSA) is proposed to address the QoE-oriented task scheduling problem among multiple dependent tasks, which utilizes hierarchical multiple queues to determine the optimal task execution order and location according to different dimensional QoS priorities. Finally, extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the satisfaction of applications.

Unleashing the Potential of Stage-Wise Decision-Making in Scheduling of Graph-Structured Tasks over Mobile Vehicular Clouds

To effectively process high volume of data across a fleet of dynamic and distributed vehicles, it is crucial to implement resource provisioning techniques that can provide reliable, cost-effective, and timely computing services. This article explores computation-intensive task scheduling over mobile vehicular clouds (MVCs). We use undirected weighted graphs (UWGs) to model both the execution of tasks and communication patterns among vehicles in an MVC. We then study reliable and timely scheduling of UWG tasks through a novel mechanism, operating on two complementary decision-making stages: Plan A and Plan B. Plan A entails a proactive decision-making approach, leveraging historical statistical data for the preemptive creation of an optimal mapping ($α$) between tasks and the MVC prior to practical task scheduling. In contrast, Plan B explores a real-time decision-making paradigm, functioning as a reliable contingency plan. It seeks a viable mapping ($β$) if $α$ encounters failures during task scheduling due to the unpredictable nature of the network. Furthermore, we provide an in-depth exploration of the procedural intricacies and key contributing factors that underpin the success of our mechanism. Additionally, we present a case study showcasing the superior performance on time efficiency and computation overhead. We further discuss a series of open directions for future research.

Matching-based Hybrid Service Trading for Task Assignment over Dynamic Mobile Crowdsensing Networks

By opportunistically engaging mobile users (workers), mobile crowdsensing (MCS) networks have emerged as important approach to facilitate sharing of sensed/gathered data of heterogeneous mobile devices. To assign tasks among workers and ensure low overheads, a series of stable matching mechanisms is introduced in this paper, which are integrated into a novel hybrid service trading paradigm consisting of futures trading mode and spot trading mode to ensure seamless MCS service provisioning. In the futures trading mode, we determine a set of long-term workers for each task through an overbooking-enabled in-advance many-to-many matching (OIA3M) mechanism, while characterizing the associated risks under statistical analysis. In the spot trading mode, we investigate the impact of fluctuations in long-term workers' resources on the violation of service quality requirements of tasks, and formalize a spot trading mode for tasks with violated service quality requirements under practical budget constraints, where the task-worker mapping is carried out via onsite many-to-many matching (O3M) and onsite many-to-one matching (OMOM). We theoretically show that our proposed matching mechanisms satisfy stability, individual rationality, fairness and computational efficiency. Comprehensive evaluations also verify the satisfaction of these properties under practical network settings, while revealing commendable performance on running time, participators' interactions, and service quality.

Distributed Machine Learning in D2D-Enabled Heterogeneous Networks: Architectures, Performance, and Open Challenges

The ever-growing concerns regarding data privacy have led to a paradigm shift in machine learning (ML) architectures from centralized to distributed approaches, giving rise to federated learning (FL) and split learning (SL) as the two predominant privacy-preserving ML mechanisms. However, implementing FL or SL in device-to-device (D2D)-enabled heterogeneous networks with diverse clients presents substantial challenges, including architecture scalability and prolonged training delays. To address these challenges, this article introduces two innovative hybrid distributed ML architectures, namely, hybrid split FL (HSFL) and hybrid federated SL (HFSL). Such architectures combine the strengths of both FL and SL in D2D-enabled heterogeneous wireless networks. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the performance and advantages of HSFL and HFSL, while also highlighting open challenges for future exploration. We support our proposals with preliminary simulations using three datasets in non-independent and non-identically distributed settings, demonstrating the feasibility of our architectures. Our simulations reveal notable reductions in communication/computation costs and training delays as compared to conventional FL and SL.

Client Orchestration and Cost-Efficient Joint Optimization for NOMA-Enabled Hierarchical Federated Learning

Hierarchical federated learning (HFL) shows great advantages over conventional two-layer federated learning (FL) in reducing network overhead and interaction latency while still retaining the data privacy of distributed FL clients. However, the communication and energy overhead still pose a bottleneck for HFL performance, especially as the number of clients raises dramatically. To tackle this issue, we propose a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enabled HFL system under semi-synchronous cloud model aggregation in this paper, aiming to minimize the total cost of time and energy at each HFL global round. Specifically, we first propose a novel fuzzy logic based client orchestration policy considering client heterogenerity in multiple aspects, including channel quality, data quantity and model staleness. Subsequently, given the fuzzy based client-edge association, a joint edge server scheduling and resource allocation problem is formulated. Utilizing problem decomposition, we firstly derive the closed-form solution for the edge server scheduling subproblem via the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) method. Next, a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) based algorithm is proposed to tackle the resource allocation subproblem considering time-varying environments. Finally, extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the considered benchmarks regarding HFL performance improvement and total cost reduction.

A RIS-Based Vehicle DOA Estimation Method With Integrated Sensing and Communication System

With the development of intelligent transportation, growing attention has been received to integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. In this paper, we formulate a novel passive sensing technique to obtain information on the vehicle's direction of arrival (DOA) using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). A novel estimation method is proposed in the scenario with a receiver using only one full-functional channel, where multiple measurements for the DOA estimation are achieved by controlling the reflection matrix (measurement matrix) in the RIS. Moreover, different from the existing estimation methods, we also consider the interference signals introduced by wireless communication in the ISAC system. Then, we propose a novel atomic norm-based method to remove the interference signals and reconstruct the sparse signal. Additionally, a novel Hankel-based multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method is formulated to obtain the DOA information after the interference removal. To reduce the interference signals more efficiently and improve the performance of the sparse reconstruction, we optimize the measurement matrix to improve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Finally, the theoretical Cram'{e}r-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived for the ISAC system on the vehicle DOA estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve better performance in the DOA estimation, and the corresponding CRLB with different distributions of the sensing nodes are shown. The code for the proposed method is available online https://github.com/chenpengseu/PassiveDOA-ISAC-RIS.git.

NoncovANM: Gridless DOA Estimation for LPDF System

Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation is an important research in the area of array signal processing, and has been studied for decades. High resolution DOA estimation requires large array aperture, which leads to the increase of hardware cost. Besides, high accuracy DOA estimation methods usually have high computational complexity. In this paper, the problem of decreasing the hardware cost and algorithm complexity is addressed. First, considering the ability of flexible controlling the electromagnetic waves and low-cost, an intelligent reconfigurable surface (IRS)-aided low-cost passive direction finding (LPDF) system is developed, where only one fully functional receiving channel is adopted. Then, the sparsity of targets direction in the spatial domain is exploited by formulating an atomic norm minimization (ANM) problem to estimate the DOA. Traditionally, solving ANM problem is complex and cannot be realized efficiently. Hence, a novel nonconvex-based ANM (NC-ANM) method is proposed by gradient threshold iteration, where a perturbation is introduced to avoid falling into saddle points. The theoretical analysis for the convergence of the NC-ANM method is also given. Moreover, the corresponding Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) in the LPDF system is derived, and taken as the referred bound of the DOA estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the compared methods in the DOA estimation with lower computational complexity in the LPDF system.

Joint Age-based Client Selection and Resource Allocation for Communication-Efficient Federated Learning over NOMA Networks

In federated learning (FL), distributed clients can collaboratively train a shared global model while retaining their own training data locally. Nevertheless, the performance of FL is often limited by the slow convergence due to poor communications links when FL is deployed over wireless networks. Due to the scarceness of radio resources, it is crucial to select clients precisely and allocate communication resource accurately for enhancing FL performance. To address these challenges, in this paper, a joint optimization problem of client selection and resource allocation is formulated, aiming to minimize the total time consumption of each round in FL over a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enabled wireless network. Specifically, considering the staleness of the local FL models, we propose an age of update (AoU) based novel client selection scheme. Subsequently, the closed-form expressions for resource allocation are derived by monotonicity analysis and dual decomposition method. In addition, a server-side artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed to predict the FL models of clients who are not selected at each round to further improve FL performance. Finally, extensive simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed schemes over FL performance, average AoU and total time consumption.

On the Message Passing Efficiency of Polar and Low-Density Parity-Check Decoders

This study focuses on the efficiency of message-passing-based decoding algorithms for polar and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Both successive cancellation (SC) and belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithms are studied {in} the message-passing framework. Counter-intuitively, SC decoding demonstrates the highest decoding efficiency, although it was considered a weak decoder {in terms of} error-correction performance. We analyze the complexity-performance tradeoff to dynamically track the decoding efficiency, where the complexity is measured by the number of messages passed (NMP), and the performance is measured by the statistical distance to the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate. This study offers a new insight into the contribution of each message passed in decoding, and compares various decoding algorithms on a message-by-message level. The analysis corroborates recent results on terabits-per-second polar SC decoders, and might shed light on better scheduling strategies.

Collaborative Authentication for 6G Networks: An Edge Intelligence based Autonomous Approach

The conventional device authentication of wireless networks usually relies on a security server and centralized process, leading to long latency and risk of single-point of failure. While these challenges might be mitigated by collaborative authentication schemes, their performance remains limited by the rigidity of data collection and aggregated result. They also tend to ignore attacker localization in the collaborative authentication process. To overcome these challenges, a novel collaborative authentication scheme is proposed, where multiple edge devices act as cooperative peers to assist the service provider in distributively authenticating its users by estimating their received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and mobility trajectory (TRA). More explicitly, a distributed learning-based collaborative authentication algorithm is conceived, where the cooperative peers update their authentication models locally, thus the network congestion and response time remain low. Moreover, a situation-aware secure group update algorithm is proposed for autonomously refreshing the set of cooperative peers in the dynamic environment. We also develop an algorithm for localizing a malicious user by the cooperative peers once it is identified. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is eminently suitable for both indoor and outdoor communication scenarios, and outperforms some existing benchmark schemes.

Learning-Based Client Selection for Federated Learning Services Over Wireless Networks with Constrained Monetary Budgets

We investigate a data quality-aware dynamic client selection problem for multiple federated learning (FL) services in a wireless network, where each client offers dynamic datasets for the simultaneous training of multiple FL services, and each FL service demander has to pay for the clients under constrained monetary budgets. The problem is formalized as a non-cooperative Markov game over the training rounds. A multi-agent hybrid deep reinforcement learning-based algorithm is proposed to optimize the joint client selection and payment actions, while avoiding action conflicts. Simulation results indicate that our proposed algorithm can significantly improve training performance.

Beamforming Design and Trajectory Optimization for UAV-Empowered Adaptable Integrated Sensing and Communication

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has high flexibility and controllable mobility, therefore it is considered as a promising enabler for future integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). In this paper, we propose a novel adaptable ISAC (AISAC) mechanism in the UAV-enabled system, where the UAV performs sensing on demand during communication and the sensing duration is configured flexibly according to the application requirements rather than keeping the same with the communication duration. Our designed mechanism avoids the excessive sensing and waste of radio resources, therefore improving the resource utilization and system performance. In the UAV-enabled AISAC system, we aim at maximizing the average system throughput by optimizing the communication and sensing beamforming as well as UAV trajectory while guaranteeing the quality-of-service requirements of communication and sensing. To efficiently solve the considered non-convex optimization problem, we first propose an efficient alternating optimization algorithm to optimize the communication and sensing beamforming for a given UAV location, and then develop a low-complexity joint beamforming and UAV trajectory optimization algorithm that sequentially searches the optimal UAV location until reaching the final location. Numerical results validate the superiority of the proposed adaptable mechanism and the effectiveness of the designed algorithm.

Joint Optimization of Resource Allocation and Trajectory Control for Mobile Group Users in Fixed-Wing UAV-Enabled Wireless Network

Owing to the controlling flexibility and cost-effectiveness, fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to serve as flying base stations (BSs) in the air-ground integrated network. By exploiting the mobility of UAVs, controllable coverage can be provided for mobile group users (MGUs) under challenging scenarios or even somewhere without communication infrastructure. However, in such dual mobility scenario where the UAV and MGUs are all moving, both the non-hovering feature of the fixed-wing UAV and the movement of MGUs will exacerbate the dynamic changes of user scheduling, which eventually leads to the degradation of MGUs' quality-of-service (QoS). In this paper, we propose a fixed-wing UAV-enabled wireless network architecture to provide moving coverage for MGUs. In order to achieve fairness among MGUs, we maximize the minimum average throughput between all users by jointly optimizing the user scheduling, resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control under the constraints on users' QoS requirements, communication resources, and UAV trajectory switching. Considering the optimization problem is mixed-integer non-convex, we decompose it into three optimization subproblems. An efficient algorithm is proposed to solve these three subproblems alternately till the convergence is realized. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the minimum average throughput of MGUs.

Overbook in Advance, Trade in Future: Computing Resource Provisioning in Hybrid Device-Edge-Cloud Networks

The big data processing in distributed Internet of Things (IoT) systems calls for innovative computing architectures and resource provisioning techniques to support real-time and cost-effective computing services. This article introduces a novel overbooking-promoted forward trading mechanism named Overbook in Advance, Trade in Future (OATF), where computing resources can be traded across three parties, i.e. end-users, an edge server and a remote cloud server, under a hybrid device-edge-cloud network with uncertainties (e.g., "no shows"). More importantly, OATF encourages a feasible overbooking rate that allows the edge server to overbook resources to multiple end-users (e.g., exceed the resource supply), while purchasing backup resources from the cloud server, by determining rights and obligations associated with forward contracts in advance via analyzing historical statistics (e.g., network, resource dynamics). Such a mechanism can greatly improve time efficiency and resource utilization thanks to overbooking and pre-signed forward contracts. Critical issues such as overbooking rate design and risk management are carefully investigated in this article, while an interesting case study is proposed with mathematical analysis. Comprehensive simulations demonstrate that OATF achieves mutually beneficial utilities for different parties (cloud, edge, and end-users), as well as substantial resource usage and commendable time efficiency, in comparison with conventional trading methods.

Deterministic Identification over Channels without CSI

Identification capacities of randomized and deterministic identification were proved to exceed channel capacity for Gaussian channels \emph{with} channel side information (CSI). In this work, we extend deterministic identification to the block fading channels without CSI by applying identification codes for both channel estimation and user identification. We prove that identification capacity is asymptotically higher than transmission capacity even in the absence of CSI. And we also analyze the finite-length performance theoretically and numerically. The simulation results verify the feasibility of the proposed blind deterministic identification in finite blocklength regime.
