Solar Thermochemical Water-Splitting Reaction Enhanced by Hydrogen Permeation Membrane

The low conversion rate and efficiency always weaken the performance of thermochemical water-splitting reaction. Herein, we, for the first time, conducted the thermodynamic study of a hydrogen permeable membrane (HPM) in an isothermal thermochemical water-splitting reaction driven by solar energy, which has showed a sharply enhanced conversion rate of 87.8% at 1500 oC and 10-5 atm at permeated side (versus 1.26% with oxygen permeation membrane). According to thermodynamic analysis, the first-law thermodynamic efficiency can reach as high as 59.1%. When taking solar-to-electric efficiency and vacuum pump efficiency into account (for converting separation work into solar energy), we simulated the appreciable efficiency of 3.05% at 1500 oC. The numerical model will provide guidance for the actual production of hydrogen by high temperature solar water splitting. Such novel work manifests the great significance of constructing a HPM reactor for efficient solar thermochemical water splitting, which shows a novel approach for high-temperature solar water splitting.

Ultrafast laser writing quill effect in low loss waveguide fabrication regime

Quill effect, one of the intriguing phenomena in ultrafast laser writing, to our knowledge, has not been studied in low-loss-waveguide (LLW) writing regime yet, probably due to its invisibility under conventional white-light microscope in that regime. In this report, with help of adaptive third harmonic generation microscopy we reveal the quill effect in LLW writing regime and study its influences on the properties of written photonic integrated components in term of polarization-related properties in fused silica and beam-splitting ratio of three-waveguide-coupler in borosilicate glass.

Exotic triple-charm deuteron-like hexaquarks

Adopting the one-boson-exchange model, we perform a systematic investigation of interactions between a doubly charmed baryon $(Ξ_{cc})$ and an $S$-wave charmed baryon ($Λ_c$, $Σ_c^{(*)}$, and $Ξ_c^{(\prime,*)}$). Both the $S$-$D$ mixing effect and coupled-channel effect are considered in this work. Our results suggest that there may exist several possible triple-charm deuteron-like hexaquarks. Meanwhile, we further study the interactions between a doubly charmed baryon and an $S$-wave anticharmed baryon. We find that a doubly charmed baryon and an $S$-wave anticharmed baryon can be easily bound together to form shallow molecular hexaquarks. These heavy flavor hexaquarks predicted here can be accessible at future experiment like LHCb.

Rapid variability of BL Lac 0925+504: interstellar scintillation induced?

Analysis of rapid variability at 4.85 GHz for the BL BLac object 0925+504 is presented and discussed. The structure functions (SF) are investigated with both refractive and weak interstellar scintillation (RISS/WISS) models analytically. Parameters obtained with these models are quantitatively compared, suggesting that the emission region of IDV is remarkably compact and the responsible interstellar scintillation medium (ISM) lies very close to the observer. Furthermore possible evidence of annual modulation of the variability timescales is detected in this source. Our findings indicate that the observed rapid variability in 0925+504 is predominantly caused by a scattering screen located along the line of sight to the source, at a distance of $\sim 110\,pc$ to the observer.

Heavy-flavored tetraquark states with the $QQ\bar{Q}\bar{Q}$ configuration

In the framework of the color-magnetic interaction, we systematically investigate the mass spectrum of the tetraquark states composed of four heavy quarks with the $QQ\bar Q\bar Q$ configuration in this work. We also show their strong decay patterns. Stable or narrow states in the $bb\bar{b}\bar{c}$ and $bc\bar{b}\bar{c}$ systems are found to be possible. We hope the studies shall be helpful to the experimental search for heavy-full exotic tetraquark states.

Effelsberg Monitoring of a Sample of RadioAstron Blazars: Analysis of Intra-Day Variability

We present the first results of an ongoing intra-day variability (IDV) flux density monitoring program of 107 blazars, which were selected from a sample of RadioAstron space very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) targets. The~IDV observations were performed with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope at 4.8\,GHz, focusing on the statistical properties of IDV in a relatively large sample of compact active galactic nuclei (AGN). We investigated the dependence of rapid ($<$3 day) variability on various source properties through a likelihood approach. We found that the IDV amplitude depends on flux density and that fainter sources vary by about a factor of 3 more than their brighter counterparts. We also found a significant difference in the variability amplitude between inverted- and flat-spectrum radio sources, with the former exhibiting stronger variations. $γ$-ray loud sources were found to vary by up to a factor 4 more than $γ$-ray quiet ones, with 4$σ$ significance. However a galactic latitude dependence was barely observed, which suggests that it is predominantly the intrinsic properties (e.g., angular size, core-dominance) of the blazars that determine how they scintillate, rather than the directional dependence in the interstellar medium (ISM). We showed that the uncertainty in the VLBI brightness temperatures obtained from the space VLBI data of the RadioAstron satellite can be as high as $\sim$70\% due to the presence of the rapid flux density variations. Our statistical results support the view that IDV at centimeter wavelengths is predominantly caused by interstellar scintillation (ISS) of the emission from the most compact, core-dominant region in an AGN.

Potential observation of the $Υ(6S) \to Υ(1^3D_J) η$ transitions at Belle II

We perform the investigation of two-body hidden-bottom transitions of the $Υ(6S)$, which include $Υ(6S) \to Υ(1^3D_J) η~~(J=1,2,3)$ decays. For estimating the branching ratios of these processes, we consider contributions from the triangle hadronic loops composed of S-wave $B_{(s)}$ and $B_{(s)}^*$ mesons, which are a bridge to connect the $Υ(6S)$ and final states. Our results show that both of the branching ratios of these decays can reach $10^{-3}$. Due to such considerable potential to observe these two-body hidden-bottom transitions of the $Υ(6S)$, we suggest the forthcoming Belle II experiment to explore them.

Interference effect as resonance killer of newly observed charmoniumlike states $Y(4320)$ and $Y(4390)$

In this letter, we decode the newly observed charmoniumlike states, $Y(4320)$ and $Y(4390)$, by introducing interference effect between $ψ(4160)$ and $ψ(4415)$, which plays a role of resonance killer for $Y(4320)$ and $Y(4390)$. It means that two newly reported charmoniumlike states are not genuine resonances, according to which we can naturally explain why two well-established charmonia $ψ(4160)$ and $ψ(4415)$ are missing in the cross sections of $e^+e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ and $π^+ π^- h_c$ simultaneously. To well describe the detailed data of these cross sections around $\sqrt{s}=4.2$ GeV, our study further illustrates that a charmoniumlike structure $Y(4220)$ must be introduced. As a charmonium, $Y(4220)$ should dominantly decay into its open-charm channel $e^+e^- \to D^0 π^+ D^{\ast-}$, which provides an extra support to $ψ(4S)$ assignment to $Y(4220)$. In fact, this interference effect introduced to explain $Y(4320)$ and $Y(4390)$ gives a typical example of non-resonant explanations to the observed $XYZ$ states, which should be paid more attention especially before identifying the observed $XYZ$ states as genuine resonances.

Doubly hidden-charm/bottom $QQ\bar Q\bar Q$ tetraquark states

We study the mass spectra for the $cc\bar c\bar c$ and $bb\bar b\bar b$ tetraquark states by developing a moment sum rule method. Our results show that the $bb\bar b\bar b$ tetraquarks lie below the threshold of $η_b(1S)η_b(1S)$. They are probably stable and very narrow. The masses for the doubly hidden-charm states $cc\bar c\bar c$ are higher than the spontaneous dissociation thresholds of two charmonium mesons. We suggest to search for such states in the $J/ψJ/ψ$ and $η_c(1S)η_c(1S)$ channels.

Microscopic characterisation of laser-written phenomena for component-wise testing of photonic integrated circuits

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) directly written with a femtosecond laser have shown great potential in many areas such as quantum information processing (QIP). Many applications, like photon-based quantum computing, demand the up-scaling of PICs and ever-higher optical performance, such as controllable polarisation dependence and lower loss. In order to overcome current limitations in fabrication precision, repeatability and material uniformity, a solution for non-destructive testing of large-scale PICs in a component-wise manner is desired to meet those ever-stricter demands. Here we demonstrate a solution for non-destructive component-wise testing by predicting the performance of a PIC component based on imaging with an adaptive optical third-harmonic-generation (THG) three-dimensional (3D) microscope. The 3D THG imaging can be performed on any component or part of it inside multi-component PIC. Moreover, through discovering new phenomena we also demonstrated that 3D THG microscopy provides a new pathway towards studying the fundamentals of light-matter interaction in transparent materials.

Alpha-event and surface characterisation in segmented true-coaxial HPGe detectors

A detailed study of alpha interactions on the passivation layer on the end-plate of a true-coaxial high-purity germanium detector is presented. The observation of alpha events on such a surface indicates an unexpectedly thin so-called "dead layer" of less than 20 μm thickness. In addition, the influence of the metalisation close to the end-plate on the time evolution of the output pulses is discussed. The results indicate that alpha contamination can result in events which could be mistaken as signals for neutrinoless double beta decay and provide some guidance on how to prevent this.

Searching for possible $Ω_c-$like molecular states from $Ξ_{c}^{*}\bar{K}/Ξ_c\bar{K}^*/Ξ_c'\bar{K}^*$ interaction

Stimulated by the observations of recent observation of $Ω_c$ as well as former one of $P_c(4380)$ and $P_c(4450)$, we perform a coupled channel analysis of $Ξ_c^*\bar{K}/Ω_cη/Ω_c^*η/Ξ_c\bar{K}^*/Ξ_c'\bar{K}^*/Ω_cω$ systems to search for possible $Ω_c-$like molecular states by using a one-boson-exchange potential. Our results suggest there exists a loosely bound molecular state, a $Ξ_c^*\bar{K}/Ω_cη/Ω_c^*η/Ξ_c\bar{K}^*/Ξ_c'\bar{K}^*/Ω_cω$ with $I(J^P)=0(3/2^-)$, it is mainly composed of the $Ξ_c^*\bar{K}$ system. Two-body strong decay width is also studied, where we find that $Ξ_c'\bar{K}$ is the dominant decay channel.

Heavy molecules and one-$σ/ω$-exchange model

In the framework of the one-boson-exchange model, we explore whether the intermediate and short-range forces from $σ/ω$-exchange can be strong enough to bind heavy molecular states. $Λ_cD(\bar{D})$, and $Λ_cΛ_c(\barΛ_c)$ systems have been studied and compared. We find that the force from $σ$-exchange is attractive and dominant, whereas the $ω$-exchange force not. As a consequence, the S-wave $Λ_cD$, $Λ_cΛ_c$, and $Λ_c\barΛ_c$ can be possible molecular candidates. We further indicate that one hadron-hadron system with more light quarks $(u,d)$ can be easier to form a bound state. As a byproduct, by studying the heavy-quark mass dependence for the $Λ_cD(\bar{D})$-like and $Λ_cΛ_c(\barΛ_c)$-like systems, we find that the charm/bottom sector can easily accommodates molecular states. Finally, the $Λ_cN(\bar{N})$ and $Λ_bN(\bar{N})$ systems are investigated. Our results indicate that they are also likely to form bound states. By including one-$π$-exchange forces providing additional attraction when coupled channels are included, we expect many molecular states in heavy quark sectors.

Regge-like relation and a universal description of heavy-light systems

Using the Regge-like formula $(M-m_Q)^2=πσL$ between hadron mass $M$ and angular momentum $L$ with a heavy quark mass $m_Q$ and a string tension $σ$, we analyze all the heavy-light systems, i.e., $D/D_s/B/B_s$ mesons and charmed and bottom baryons.Numerical plots are obtained for all the heavy-light mesons of experimental data whose slope becomes nearly equal to 1/2 of that for light hadrons. Assuming that charmed and bottom baryons consist of one heavy quark and one light cluster of two light quarks (diquark), we apply the formula to all the heavy-light baryons including recently discovered $Ω_c$'s and find that these baryons experimentally measured satisfy the above formula. We predict the average mass values of $B$, $B_s$, $Λ_b$, $Σ_c$, $Ξ_c$, and $Ω_c$ with $L=2$ as 6.01, 6.13, 6.15, 3.05, 3.07, and 3.34 GeV, respectively. Our results on baryons suggest that these baryons can be safely regarded as heavy quark-light cluster configuration. We also find a universal description for all the heavy-light mesons as well as baryons, i.e., one unique line is enough to describe both of charmed and bottom heavy-light systems. Our results suggest that instead of mass itself, gluon flux energy is essential to obtain a linear trajectory.

Establishing low-lying doubly charmed baryons

We systematically study the $S$-wave doubly charmed baryons using the method of QCD sum rules. Our results suggest that the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ recently observed by LHCb can be well identified as the $S$-wave $Ξ_{cc}$ state of $J^P = 1/2^+$. We study its relevant $Ω_{cc}$ state, whose mass is predicted to be around 3.7 GeV. We also systematically study the $P$-wave doubly charmed baryons, whose masses are predicted to be around 4.1 GeV. Especially, there can be several excited doubly charmed baryons in this energy region, and we suggest to search for them in order to study the fine structure of the strong interaction.

A systematic study of mass spectra and strong decay of strange mesons

The mass spectrum of the kaon family is analyzed by the {modified} Godfrey-Isgur model with a color screening effect approximating the kaon as a heavy-light meson system. This analysis gives us the structure and possible assignments of the observed kaon candidates, which can be tested by comparing the theoretical results of their two-body strong decays with the experimental data. Additionally, prediction of some partial decay widths is made on the kaons still missing in experiment. This study is crucial to establishing the kaon family and searching for their higher excitations in the future.
