Information Relaxation and A Duality-Driven Algorithm for Stochastic Dynamic Programs

We use the technique of information relaxation to develop a duality-driven iterative approach to obtaining and improving confidence interval estimates for the true value of finite-horizon stochastic dynamic programming problems. We show that the sequence of dual value estimates yielded from the proposed approach in principle monotonically converges to the true value function in a finite number of dual iterations. Aiming to overcome the curse of dimensionality in various applications, we also introduce a regression-based Monte Carlo algorithm for implementation. The new approach can be used not only to assess the quality of heuristic policies, but also to improve them if we find that their duality gap is large. We obtain the convergence rate of our Monte Carlo method in terms of the amounts of both basis functions and the sampled states. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in an optimal order execution problem with market friction and in an inventory management problem in the presence of lost sale and lead time. Both examples are well known in the literature to be difficult to solve for optimality. The experiments show that our method can significantly improve the heuristics suggested in the literature and obtain new policies with a satisfactory performance guarantee.

Scheduling Policy and Power Allocation for Federated Learning in NOMA Based MEC

Federated learning (FL) is a highly pursued machine learning technique that can train a model centrally while keeping data distributed. Distributed computation makes FL attractive for bandwidth limited applications especially in wireless communications. There can be a large number of distributed edge devices connected to a central parameter server (PS) and iteratively download/upload data from/to the PS. Due to the limited bandwidth, only a subset of connected devices can be scheduled in each round. There are usually millions of parameters in the state-of-art machine learning models such as deep learning, resulting in a high computation complexity as well as a high communication burden on collecting/distributing data for training. To improve communication efficiency and make the training model converge faster, we propose a new scheduling policy and power allocation scheme using non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) settings to maximize the weighted sum data rate under practical constraints during the entire learning process. NOMA allows multiple users to transmit on the same channel simultaneously. The user scheduling problem is transformed into a maximum-weight independent set problem that can be solved using graph theory. Simulation results show that the proposed scheduling and power allocation scheme can help achieve a higher FL testing accuracy in NOMA based wireless networks than other existing schemes.

Towards Green Mobile Edge Computing Offloading Systems with Security Enhancement

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is an emerging communication scheme that aims at reducing latency. In this paper, we investigate a green MEC system under the existence of an eavesdropper. We use computation efficiency, which is defined as the total number of bits computed divided by the total energy consumption, as our main metric. To alleviate stringent latency requirement, a joint secure offloading and computation model is proposed. Additionally, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing computation efficiency, under several practical constraints. The non-convex problem is tackled by successive convex approximation and an iterative algorithm. Simulation results have verified the superiority of our proposed scheme, as well as the effectiveness of our problem solution.

A New Multiple Max-pooling Integration Module and Cross Multiscale Deconvolution Network Based on Image Semantic Segmentation

To better retain the deep features of an image and solve the sparsity problem of the end-to-end segmentation model, we propose a new deep convolutional network model for medical image pixel segmentation, called MC-Net. The core of this network model consists of four parts, namely, an encoder network, a multiple max-pooling integration module, a cross multiscale deconvolution decoder network and a pixel-level classification layer. In the network structure of the encoder, we use multiscale convolution instead of the traditional single-channel convolution. The multiple max-pooling integration module first integrates the output features of each submodule of the encoder network and reduces the number of parameters by convolution using a kernel size of 1. At the same time, each max-pooling layer (the pooling size of each layer is different) is spliced after each convolution to achieve the translation invariance of the feature maps of each submodule. We use the output feature maps from the multiple max-pooling integration module as the input of the decoder network; the multiscale convolution of each submodule in the decoder network is cross-fused with the feature maps generated by the corresponding multiscale convolution in the encoder network. Using the above feature map processing methods solves the sparsity problem after the max-pooling layer-generating matrix and enhances the robustness of the classification. We compare our proposed model with the well-known Fully Convolutional Networks for Semantic Segmentation (FCNs), DecovNet, PSPNet, U-net, SgeNet and other state-of-the-art segmentation networks such as HyperDenseNet, MS-Dual, Espnetv2, Denseaspp using one binary Kaggle 2018 data science bowl dataset and two multiclass dataset and obtain encouraging experimental results.

A Systematic Analysis of the Phase Lags Associated with the Type-C Quasi-periodic Oscillation in GRS 1915+105

We present a systematic analysis of the phase lags associated with the type-C QPOs in GRS 1915+105 using RXTE data. Our sample comprises of 620 RXTE observations with type-C QPOs ranging from ~0.4 Hz to ~6.3 Hz. Based on our analysis, we confirm that the QPO phase lags decrease with QPO frequency, and change sign from positive to negative at a QPO frequency of ~2 Hz. In addition, we find that the slope of this relation is significantly different between QPOs below and above 2 Hz. The relation between the QPO lags and QPO rms can be well fitted with a broken line: as the QPO lags go from negative to positive, the QPO rms first increases, reaching its maximum at around zero lag, and then decreases. The phase-lag behaviour of the subharmonic of the QPO is similar to that of the QPO fundamental, where the subharmonic lags decrease with subharmonic frequency and change sign from positive to negative at a subharmonic frequency of ~1 Hz; on the contrary, the second harmonic of the QPO shows a quite different phase-lag behaviour, where all the second harmonics show hard lags that remain more or less constant. For both the QPO and its (sub)harmonics, the slope of the lag-energy spectra shows a similar evolution with frequency as the average phase lags. This suggests that the lag-energy spectra drives the average phase lags. We discuss the possibility for the change in lag sign, and the physical origin of the QPO lags.

Adaptive Federated Learning With Gradient Compression in Uplink NOMA

Federated learning (FL) is an emerging machine learning technique that aggregates model attributes from a large number of distributed devices. Several unique features such as energy saving and privacy preserving make FL a highly promising learning approach for power-limited and privacy sensitive devices. Although distributed computing can lower down the information amount that needs to be uploaded, model updates in FL can still experience performance bottleneck, especially for updates via wireless connections. In this work, we investigate the performance of FL update with mobile edge devices that are connected to the parameter server (PS) with practical wireless links, where uplink update from user to PS has very limited capacity. Different from the existing works, we apply non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) together with gradient compression in the wireless uplink. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can significantly reduce aggregation latency while achieving similar accuracy.

Overview to the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) Satellite

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. Here we give an overview of the mission and its progresses, including payload, core sciences, ground calibration/facility, ground segment, data archive, software, in-orbit performance, calibration, background model, observations and some preliminary results.

Timing analysis of Swift J1658.2-4242's outburst in 2018 with Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat

We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate Swift J1658.2-4242 during its 2018 outburst with the observations of Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and AstroSat in 0.1-250keV. The evolution of intensity, hardness and integrated fractional root mean square (rms) observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER are presented in this paper. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (0.8-3.5Hz) and Insight-HXMT (1-1.6Hz) are also reported in this work. The features of the QPOs are analysed with an energy range of 0.5-50keV. The relations between QPO frequency and other characteristics such as intensity, hardness and QPO rms are carefully studied. The timing and spectral properties indicate that Swift J1658.2-4242 is a black hole binary system. Besides, the rms spectra of the source calculated from the simultaneous observation of Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat support the Lense-Thirring origin of the QPOs. The relation between QPO phase lag and the centroid frequency of Swift J1658.2-4242 reveals a near zero constant when < 4Hz and a soft phase lag at 6.68 Hz. This independence follows the same trend as the high inclination galactic black hole binaries such as MAXI J1659-152.

Studies on the time response distribution of Insigh}-HXMT/LE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

Long term variability of Swift J1753.5-0127]{Long term variability of Swift J1753.5-0127: X-ray spectral-temporal correlations during state transitions

We studied the long-term evolution of the spectral-temporal correlated properties of the black hole candidate Swift J1753.5-0127 from the onset of its outburst until 2011 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The source stayed most of its lifetime during hard state, with occasionally transitioned to the hard intermediate state. Similar to typical black hole transients, Swift J1753.5-0127 traces a clear hard line in absolute rms - intensity diagram during the low hard state, with expected highest absolute rms, while shows a clear turn during the hard intermediate state, accompanied by lower absolute rms. Different from Cyg X-1, we found that frequency-dependent time lag increased significantly in the 0.02 -- 3.2 Hz band during state transition in this source. The X-ray time lags in 0.02 -- 3.2 Hz can therefore be used as indicators of state transition in this source. Type-C QPO frequency is positively related with its fractional rms and X-ray photon index, suggesting a moving inwards disk/corona scenario. We discussed the physical interpretation of our results in our paper.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

Co-projection-plane based 3-D padding for polyhedron projection for 360-degree video

The polyhedron projection for 360-degree video is becoming more and more popular since it can lead to much less geometry distortion compared with the equirectangular projection. However, in the polyhedron projection, we can observe very obvious texture discontinuity in the area near the face boundary. Such a texture discontinuity may lead to serious quality degradation when motion compensation crosses the discontinuous face boundary. To solve this problem, in this paper, we first propose to fill the corresponding neighboring faces in the suitable positions as the extension of the current face to keep approximated texture continuity. Then a co-projection-plane based 3-D padding method is proposed to project the reference pixels in the neighboring face to the current face to guarantee exact texture continuity. Under the proposed scheme, the reference pixel is always projected to the same plane with the current pixel when performing motion compensation so that the texture discontinuity problem can be solved. The proposed scheme is implemented in the reference software of High Efficiency Video Coding. Compared with the existing method, the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the rate-distortion performance. The experimental results obviously demonstrate that the texture discontinuity in the face boundary can be well handled by the proposed algorithm.

Contact Mechanics of a Small Icosahedral Virus

Virus binding to a surface results at least locally, at the contact area, in stress and potential structural perturbation of the virus cage. Here we address the question of the role of substrate-induced deformation in the overall virus mechanical response to the adsorption event. This question may be especially important for the broad category of viruses that have their shells stabilized by weak, non-covalent interactions. We utilize atomic force microscopy to measure the height change distributions of the brome mosaic virus upon adsorption from liquid on atomically flat substrates and present a continuum model which captures well the behavior. Height data fitting according the model provides, without recourse to indentation, estimates of virus elastic properties and of the interfacial energy.

A global study of Type B quasi-periodic oscillation in black hole X-ray binaries

We performed a global study on the timing and spectral properties of type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the outbursts of black hole X-ray binaries. The sample is built based on the observations of {\it Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer}, via searching in the literature in RXTE era for all the identified type-B QPOs. To enlarge the sample, we also investigated some type-B QPOs that are reported but not yet fully identified. Regarding to the time lag and hard/soft flux ratio, we found that the sources with type-B QPOs behave in two subgroups. In one subgroup, type-B QPO shows a hard time lag that firstly decreases and then reverse into a soft time lag along with softening of the energy spectrum. In the other subgroup, type-B QPOs distribute only in a small region with hard time lag and relatively soft hardness. These findings may be understood with a diversity of the homogeneity showing up for the hot inner flow of different sources. We confirm the universality of a positive relation between the type-B QPO frequency and the hard component luminosity in different sources. We explain the results by considering that the type-B QPO photons are produced in the inner accretion flow around the central black hole, under a local Eddington limit. Using this relationship, we derived an mass estimation of $9.3-27.1$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ for the black hole in H 1743-322.

Closed strong spacelike curves, Fenchel theorem and Plateau problem in the 3-dimensional Minkowski space

We generalize the Fenchel theorem for strong spacelike closed curves of index $1$ in the 3-dimensional Minkowski space, showing that the total curvature must be less than or equal to $2π$. Here strong spacelike means that the tangent vector and the curvature vector span a spacelike 2-plane at each point of the curve $γ$ under consideration. The assumption of index 1 is equivalent to saying that $γ$ winds around some timelike axis with winding number 1. We prove this reversed Fenchel-type inequality by constructing a ruled spacelike surface with the given curve as boundary and applying the Gauss-Bonnet formula. As a by-product, this shows the existence of a maximal surface with $γ$ as boundary.

The Fenchel-type inequality in the 3-dimensional Lorentz space and a Crofton formula

We generalize the Fenchel theorem to strong spacelike (which means that the tangent vector and the curvature vector span a spacelike 2-plane at each point) closed curves with index 1 in the 3-dimensional Lorentz space, showing that the total curvatures must be less than or equal to $2π$. A similar generalization of the Fary-Milnor theorem is also obtained. We establish the Crofton formula on the de Sitter 2-sphere which implies the above results.

A Poincaré-type inequality and a related eigenvalue problem

Given a smooth positive function $f$ defined on the unit circle satisfying a simple condition, we obtain a Poincaré-type inequality for an arbitrary function $u$ whose weighted average with respect to $f$ is zero. The proof uses Fenchel's theorem about the total curvature of closed space curves in an essential way. Next we consider the generalization of this result to higher dimensional closed Riemannian manifold and reduce it to an eigenvalue problem. Finally, we point out that even though such Poincaré-type inequality still holds, the best constant $λ_1(f)$ might be different from the first eigenvalue $λ_1$ by constructing explicit examples on the standard spheres and flat tori.
