Bernstein type theorems for spacelike stationary graphs in Minkowski spaces

For entire spacelike stationary 2-dimensional graphs in Minkowski spaces, we establish Bernstein type theorems under specific boundedness assumptions either on the W-function or on the total (Gaussian) curvature. These conclusions imply the classical Bernstein theorem for minimal surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space and Calabi's theorem for spacelike maximal surfaces in 3-dimensional Minkowski space.

Classification of Willmore 2-spheres in the 5-dimensional sphere

The classification of Willmore 2-spheres in the $n$-dimensional sphere $S^n$ is a long-standing problem, solved only when $n=3,4$ by Bryant, Ejiri, Musso and Montiel independently. In this paper we give a classification when $n=5$. There are three types of such surfaces up to Möbius transformations: (1) super-conformal surfaces in $S^4$; (2) minimal surfaces in $R^5$; (3) adjoint transforms of super-conformal minimal surfaces in $R^5$. In particular, Willmore surfaces in the third class are not S-Willmore (i.e., without a dual Willmore surface). To show the existence of Willmore 2-spheres in $S^5$ of type (3), we describe all adjoint transforms of a super-conformal minimal surfaces in $R^n$ and provide some explicit criterions on the immersion property. As an application, we obtain new immersed Willmore 2-spheres in $S^5$ and $S^6$, which are not S-Willmore.

The Moebius geometry of Wintgen ideal submanifolds

Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality pointwise in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the scalar normal curvature. They are Moebius invariant objects. The mean curvature sphere defines a conformal Gauss map into a Grassmann manifold. We show that any Wintgen ideal submanifold has a Riemannian submersion structure over a Riemann surface with the fibers being round spheres. Then the conformal Gauss map is shown to be a super-conformal and harmonic map from the underlying Riemann surface. Some of our previous results are surveyed in the final part.

Cross-correlations between soft and hard light curves depending on luminosity in the transient neutron star XTE J1701-462

Using all the observations from Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer for accreting neutron star XTE J1701-462, we carry out a systematic study on the cross-correlation between its soft and hard light curves. The anti-correlations appear at the hard vertex and on the upper normal branch (NB) in the Cyg-like interval, occur on the horizontal branch (HB) and/or upper NB in the first and second Sco-like intervals, and display at the upper flaring branch (FB) in the third Sco-like interval. We suggest that the anti-correlation might evolve with luminosity, because with decreasing of luminosity, the source evolved from a Cyg-like Z source, via a Sco-like Z source, to an atoll source. In the Cyg-like interval, the positive correlations are mostly distributed on the HB, which is not consistent with that of the Cyg-like Z source GX 5-1 and Cyg X-2 whose HBs host ambiguous correlations and anti-correlations. From our spectral analyses, it is found that the ratio of the hard emission to the soft emission basically keeps unvaried from the HB to the hard vertex, which might result in the positive correlation. Additionally, we compare the spectra in the third Sco-like interval with those of atoll source 4U 1735-44 and find that their spectral evolution along the tracks in the color-color diagrams are similar, indicating that in this interval, XTE J1701-462 approaches an atoll source. Both hard time lags and soft time lags are detected and the possible origins of them are discussed.

Global geometry and topology of spacelike stationary surfaces in the 4-dimensional Lorentz space

For spacelike stationary (i.e. zero mean curvature) surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentz space one can naturally introduce two Gauss maps and Weierstrass representation. In this paper we investigate their global geometry systematically. The total Gaussian curvature is related with the surface topology as well as the indices of the so-called good singular ends by a generalized Jorge-Meeks formula. On the other hand, as shown by a family of counter-examples to Osserman's theorem, finite total curvature no longer implies that Gauss maps extend to the ends. Interesting examples include the generalization of the classical catenoids, helicoids, the Enneper surface, and Jorge-Meeks' k-noids. Any of them could be embedded in the 4-dimensional Lorentz space, showing a sharp contrast with the case of 3-dimensional Euclidean space.

Wintgen ideal submanifolds of codimension two, complex curves, and Moebius geometry

Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality pointwise in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the scalar normal curvature. Using the framework of Moebius geometry, we show that in the codimension two case, the mean curvature sphere of the Wintgen ideal submanifold corresponds to an 1-isotropic holomorphic curve in a complex quadric Q. Conversely, any 1-isotropic complex curve in Q describes a 2-parameter family of m-dimensional spheres whose envelope is always a m-dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifold at the regular points. The relationship with Dajczer and Tojeiro's work on the same topic as well as the description in terms of minimal surfaces in the Euclidean space is also discussed.

Classification of Moebius homogeneous Wintgen ideal submanifolds

A submanifold in a real space form attaining equality in the DDVV inequality at every point is called a Wintgen ideal submanifold. They are invariant objects under the Moebius transformations. In this paper, we classify those Wintgen ideal submanifolds of dimension m>3 which are Moebius homogeneous. There are three classes of non-trivial examples, each related with a famous class of homogeneous minimal surfaces in $S^n$ or $CP^n$: the cones over the Veronese surfaces $S^2$ in $S^n$, the cones over homogeneous flat minimal surfaces in $S^n$, and the Hopf bundle over the Veronese embeddings of $CP^1$ in $CP^n$.

Moebius geometry of three dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifolds in S^5

Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality at every point in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the normal scalar curvature. This property is conformal invariant; hence we study them in the framework of Moebius geometry, and restrict to three dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifolds in S^5. In particular we give Moebius characterizations for minimal ones among them, which are also known as (3-dimensional) austere submanifolds (in 5-dimensional space forms).

Deformation of Hypersurfaces Preserving the Moebius Metric and a Reduction Theorem

A hypersurface without umbilics in the n+1 dimensional Euclidean space is known to be determined by the Moebius metric and the Moebius second fundamental form up to a Moebius transformation when n>2. In this paper we consider Moebius rigidity for hypersurfaces and deformations of a hypersurface preserving the Moebius metric in the high dimensional case n>3. When the highest multiplicity of principal curvatures is less than n-2, the hypersurface is Moebius rigid. Deformable hypersurfaces and the possible deformations are also classified completely. In addition, we establish a Reduction Theorem characterizing the classical construction of cylinders, cones, and rotational hypersurfaces, which helps to find all the non-trivial deformable examples in our classification with wider application in the future.

Complete stationary surfaces in R^4_1 with total Gaussian curvature 6π

In a previous paper we classified complete stationary surfaces (i.e. spacelike surfaces with zero mean curvature) in 4-dimensional Lorentz space $\mathbb{R}^4_1$ which are algebraic and with total Gaussian curvature $-\int K\mathrm{d}M=4π$. Here we go on with the study of such surfaces with $-\int K\mathrm{d}M=6π$. It is shown in this paper that the topological type of such a surface must be a Möbius strip. On the other hand, new examples with a single good singular end are shown to exist.

Wintgen ideal submanifolds with a low-dimensional integrable distribution (I)

A submanifold in space forms satisfies the well-known DDVV inequality due to De Smet, Dillen, Verstraelen and Vrancken. The submanifold attaining equality in the DDVV inequality at every point is called Wintgen ideal submanifold. As conformal invariant objects, Wintgen ideal submanifolds are studied in this paper using the framework of Möbius geometry. We classify Wintgen ideal submanfiolds of dimension $m>2$ and arbitrary codimension when a canonically defined 2-dimensional distribution $\mathbb{D}$ is integrable. Such examples come from cones, cylinders, or rotational submanifolds over super-minimal surfaces in spheres, Euclidean spaces, or hyperbolic spaces, respectively.

Chen-Gackstatter type surfaces in R^4_1: deformation, symmetry, and embeddedness

We find a 2-parameter family of deformations in R^4_1 of the classical Chen-Gackstatter surface explicitly, and show the existence of a larger 4-parameter family of deformations. Each of them still has genus one, a unique end, with total Gaussian curvature $-\int K=8π$. On the other hand, a uniqueness theorem is obtained when we assume that the surface has more than 4 symmetries. The problem of embeddedness is also discussed with some partial results.

Complete stationary surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4_1$ with total curvature $-\int K\mathrm{d}M=4π$

Applying the general theory about complete spacelike stationary (i.e. zero mean curvature) surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentz space $\mathbb{R}^4_1$, we classify those regular algebraic ones with total Gaussian curvature $-\int K\mathrm{d}M=4π$. Such surfaces must be oriented and be congruent to either the generalized catenoids or the generalized enneper surfaces. For non-orientable stationary surfaces, we consider the Weierstrass representation on the oriented double covering $\widetilde{M}$ (of genus $g$) and generalize Meeks and Oliveira's Möbius bands. The total Gaussian curvature are shown to be at least $2π(g+3)$ when $\widetilde{M}\to\mathbb{R}^4_1$ is algebraic-type. We conjecture that there do not exist non-algebraic examples with $-\int K\mathrm{d}M=4π$.

Tuning Magnetic Avalanches in Mn12-ac

Using micron-sized Hall sensor arrays to obtain time-resolved measurements of the local magnetization, we report a systematic study in the molecular magnet Mn$_{12}$-acetate of magnetic avalanches controllably triggered in different fixed external magnetic fields and for different values of the initial magnetization. The speeds of propagation of the spin-reversal fronts are in good overall agreement with the theory of magnetic deflagration of Garanin and Chudnovsky \cite{Garanin}.

Polar transform of Spacelike isothermic surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentzian space forms

The conformal geometry of spacelike surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentzian space forms has been studied by the authors in a previous paper, where the so-called polar transform was introduced. Here it is shown that this transform preserves spacelike conformal isothermic surfaces. We relate this new transform with the known transforms (Darboux transform and spectral transform) of isothermic surfaces by establishing the permutability theorems.

Spacelike Willmore surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentzian space forms

Spacelike Willmore surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentzian space forms, a topic in Lorentzian conformal geometry which parallels the theory of Willmore surfaces in $S^4$, are studied in this paper. We define two kinds of transforms for such a surface, which produce the so-called left/right polar surfaces and the adjoint surfaces. These new surfaces are again conformal Willmore surfaces. For them holds interesting duality theorem. As an application spacelike Willmore 2-spheres are classified. Finally we construct a family of homogeneous spacelike Willmore tori.

Willmore Surfaces of Constant Moebius Curvature

We study Willmore surfaces of constant Moebius curvature $K$ in $S^4$. It is proved that such a surface in $S^3$ must be part of a minimal surface in $R^3$ or the Clifford torus. Another result in this paper is that an isotropic surface (hence also Willmore) in $S^4$ of constant $K$ could only be part of a complex curve in $C^2\cong R^4$ or the Veronese 2-sphere in $S^4$. It is conjectured that they are the only examples possible. The main ingredients of the proofs are over-determined systems and isoparametric functions.

Adjoint Transform of Willmore Surfaces in $n$-sphere

After the surface theory of Möbius geometry, this study concerns a pair of conformally immersed surfaces in $n$-sphere. Two new invariants $θ$ and $ρ$ associated with them are introduced as well as the notion of touch and co-touch. This approach is helpful in research about transforms of certain surface classes. As an application, we define adjoint transform for any given Willmore surface in $n$-sphere. It always exists locally (yet not unique in general) and generalizes known duality theorems of Willmore surfaces. This theory on surface pairs reaches its high point by a characterization of adjoint Willmore surfaces in terms of harmonic maps.
