High-Efficient Near-Field Channel Characteristics Analysis for Large-Scale MIMO Communication Systems

Large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) holds great promise for the fifth-generation (5G) and future communication systems. In near-field scenarios, the spherical wavefront model is commonly utilized to accurately depict the propagation characteristics of large-scale MIMO communication channels. However, employing this modeling method necessitates the computation of angle and distance parameters for each antenna element, resulting in challenges regarding computational complexity. To solve this problem, we introduce a subarray decomposition scheme with the purpose of dividing the whole large-scale antenna array into several smaller subarrays. This scheme is implemented in the near-field channel modeling for large-scale MIMO communications between the base stations (BS) and the mobile receiver (MR). Essential channel propagation statistics, such as spatial cross-correlation functions (CCFs), temporal auto-correlation functions (ACFs), frequency correlation functions (CFs), and channel capacities, are derived and discussed. A comprehensive analysis is conducted to investigate the influence of the height of the BS, motion characteristics of the MR, and antenna configurations on the channel statistics. The proposed channel model criterions, such as the modeling precision and computational complexity, are also theoretically compared. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented communication model in obtaining a good tradeoff between modeling precision and computational complexity.

Tailed Low-Rank Matrix Factorization for Similarity Matrix Completion

Similarity matrix serves as a fundamental tool at the core of numerous downstream machine-learning tasks. However, missing data is inevitable and often results in an inaccurate similarity matrix. To address this issue, Similarity Matrix Completion (SMC) methods have been proposed, but they suffer from high computation complexity due to the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) operation. To reduce the computation complexity, Matrix Factorization (MF) techniques are more explicit and frequently applied to provide a low-rank solution, but the exact low-rank optimal solution can not be guaranteed since it suffers from a non-convex structure. In this paper, we introduce a novel SMC framework that offers a more reliable and efficient solution. Specifically, beyond simply utilizing the unique Positive Semi-definiteness (PSD) property to guide the completion process, our approach further complements a carefully designed rank-minimization regularizer, aiming to achieve an optimal and low-rank solution. Based on the key insights that the underlying PSD property and Low-Rank property improve the SMC performance, we present two novel, scalable, and effective algorithms, SMCNN and SMCNmF, which investigate the PSD property to guide the estimation process and incorporate nonconvex low-rank regularizer to ensure the low-rank solution. Theoretical analysis ensures better estimation performance and convergence speed. Empirical results on real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority and efficiency of our proposed methods compared to various baseline methods.

Incremental Context-free Grammar Inference in Black Box Settings

Black-box context-free grammar inference presents a significant challenge in many practical settings due to limited access to example programs. The state-of-the-art methods, Arvada and Treevada, employ heuristic approaches to generalize grammar rules, initiating from flat parse trees and exploring diverse generalization sequences. We have observed that these approaches suffer from low quality and readability, primarily because they process entire example strings, adding to the complexity and substantially slowing down computations. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel method that segments example strings into smaller units and incrementally infers the grammar. Our approach, named Kedavra, has demonstrated superior grammar quality (enhanced precision and recall), faster runtime, and improved readability through empirical comparison.

Exploring SSL Discrete Tokens for Multilingual ASR

With the advancement of Self-supervised Learning (SSL) in speech-related tasks, there has been growing interest in utilizing discrete tokens generated by SSL for automatic speech recognition (ASR), as they offer faster processing techniques. However, previous studies primarily focused on multilingual ASR with Fbank features or English ASR with discrete tokens, leaving a gap in adapting discrete tokens for multilingual ASR scenarios. This study presents a comprehensive comparison of discrete tokens generated by various leading SSL models across multiple language domains. We aim to explore the performance and efficiency of speech discrete tokens across multiple language domains for both monolingual and multilingual ASR scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that discrete tokens achieve comparable results against systems trained on Fbank features in ASR tasks across seven language domains with an average word error rate (WER) reduction of 0.31% and 1.76% absolute (2.80% and 15.70% relative) on dev and test sets respectively, with particularly WER reduction of 6.82% absolute (41.48% relative) on the Polish test set.

SimMAT: Exploring Transferability from Vision Foundation Models to Any Image Modality

Foundation models like ChatGPT and Sora that are trained on a huge scale of data have made a revolutionary social impact. However, it is extremely challenging for sensors in many different fields to collect similar scales of natural images to train strong foundation models. To this end, this work presents a simple and effective framework SimMAT to study an open problem: the transferability from vision foundation models trained on natural RGB images to other image modalities of different physical properties (e.g., polarization). SimMAT consists of a modality-agnostic transfer layer (MAT) and a pretrained foundation model. We apply SimMAT to a representative vision foundation model Segment Anything Model (SAM) to support any evaluated new image modality. Given the absence of relevant benchmarks, we construct a new benchmark to evaluate the transfer learning performance. Our experiments confirm the intriguing potential of transferring vision foundation models in enhancing other sensors' performance. Specifically, SimMAT can improve the segmentation performance (mIoU) from 22.15% to 53.88% on average for evaluated modalities and consistently outperforms other baselines. We hope that SimMAT can raise awareness of cross-modal transfer learning and benefit various fields for better results with vision foundation models.

A spiral sampling method for calculating the complex orbital angular momentum spectrum

OAM spectrum reflects the OAM component included in measured light field which is crucial in OAM -based application. However, traditional definition-based OAM spectrum algorithm is extraordinary time-consuming and limited to prior knowledge severely. To overcome it, in this paper, we propose a novel method to calculate the complex spectrum. After spiral sampling and Fourier transform, one can retrieve the radial coefficient of arbitrary OAM component by proper filtering and inverse Fourier transform. The simulation results reveal that the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) between retrieved one and target could reach at 0.0221 and 0.0199 on average for amplitude and phase respectively after normalized. This method could provide a powerful tool for future OAM-based and application.

ToneUnit: A Speech Discretization Approach for Tonal Language Speech Synthesis

Representing speech as discretized units has numerous benefits in supporting downstream spoken language processing tasks. However, the approach has been less explored in speech synthesis of tonal languages like Mandarin Chinese. Our preliminary experiments on Chinese speech synthesis reveal the issue of "tone shift", where a synthesized speech utterance contains correct base syllables but incorrect tones. To address the issue, we propose the ToneUnit framework, which leverages annotated data with tone labels as CTC supervision to learn tone-aware discrete speech units for Mandarin Chinese speech. Our findings indicate that the discrete units acquired through the TonUnit resolve the "tone shift" issue in synthesized Chinese speech and yield favorable results in English synthesis. Moreover, the experimental results suggest that finite scalar quantization enhances the effectiveness of ToneUnit. Notably, ToneUnit can work effectively even with minimal annotated data.

Auxiliary Input in Training: Incorporating Catheter Features into Deep Learning Models for ECG-Free Dynamic Coronary Roadmapping

Dynamic coronary roadmapping is a technology that overlays the vessel maps (the "roadmap") extracted from an offline image sequence of X-ray angiography onto a live stream of X-ray fluoroscopy in real-time. It aims to offer navigational guidance for interventional surgeries without the need for repeated contrast agent injections, thereby reducing the risks associated with radiation exposure and kidney failure. The precision of the roadmaps is contingent upon the accurate alignment of angiographic and fluoroscopic images based on their cardiac phases, as well as precise catheter tip tracking. The former ensures the selection of a roadmap that closely matches the vessel shape in the current frame, while the latter uses catheter tips as reference points to adjust for translational motion between the roadmap and the present vessel tree. Training deep learning models for both tasks is challenging and underexplored. However, incorporating catheter features into the models could offer substantial benefits, given humans heavily rely on catheters to complete the tasks. To this end, we introduce a simple but effective method, auxiliary input in training (AIT), and demonstrate that it enhances model performance across both tasks, outperforming baseline methods in knowledge incorporation and transfer learning.

CrossInspector: A Static Analysis Approach for Cross-Contract Vulnerability Detection

With the development of blockchain technology, the detection of smart contract vulnerabilities is increasingly emphasized. However, when detecting vulnerabilities in inter-contract interactions (i.e., cross-contract vulnerabilities) using smart contract bytecode, existing tools often produce many false positives and false negatives due to insufficient recovery of semantic information and inadequate consideration of contract dependencies. We present CrossInspector, a novel framework for detecting cross-contract vulnerabilities at the bytecode level through static analysis. CrossInspector utilizes a trained Transformer model to recover semantic information and considers control flow, data flow, and dependencies related to smart contract state variables to construct a state dependency graph for fine-grained inter-procedural analysis. Additionally, CrossInspector incorporates a pruning method and two parallel optimization mechanisms to accelerate the vulnerability detection process. Experiments on our manually constructed dataset demonstrate that CrossInspector outperforms the state-of-the-art tools in both precision (97\%) and recall (96.75\%), while also significantly reducing the overall time from 16.34 seconds to 7.83 seconds, almost on par with the fastest tool that utilizes bytecode for detection. Additionally, we ran CrossInspector on a randomly selected set of 300 real-world smart contracts and identified 11 cross-contract vulnerabilities that were missed by prior tools.

Plaquette Models, Cellular Automata, and Measurement-induced Criticality

We present a class of two-dimensional randomized plaquette models, where the multi-spin interaction term, referred to as the plaquette term, is replaced by a single-site spin term with a probability of $1-p$. By varying $p$, we observe a ground state phase transition, or equivalently, a phase transition of the symmetry operator. We find that as we vary $p$, the symmetry operator changes from being extensive to being localized in space. These models can be equivalently understood as 1+1D randomized cellular automaton dynamics, allowing the 2D transition to be interpreted as a 1+1D dynamical absorbing phase transition. In this paper, our primary focus is on the plaquette term with three or five-body interactions, where we explore the universality classes of the transitions. Specifically, for the model with five-body interaction, we demonstrate that it belongs to the same universality class as the measurement-induced entanglement phase transition observed in 1+1D Clifford dynamics, as well as the boundary entanglement transition of the 2D cluster state induced by random bulk Pauli measurements. This work establishes a connection between transitions in classical spin models, cellular automata, and hybrid random circuits.

Measurement induced phase transitions in quantum raise and peel models

We present a quantum circuit model which emulates the interface growth of the classical raise-and-peel model. Our model consists of Clifford unitary gates interspersed with projective measurements, applied according to prescribed feedback rules. We numerically find via large-scale simulations that, depending on the feedback rules, the system may undergo several measurement-induced entanglement transitions, including continuous transitions within a universality class not previously observed in hybrid random Clifford systems as well as a first-order transition.

Cold plasma with zirconia nanoparticles for lung cancer via TGF-\b{eta} signaling pathway

Despite advancements in lung cancer therapy, the prognosis for advanced or metastatic patients remains poor, yet many patients eventually develop resistance to standard treatments leading to disease progression and poor survival. Here, we described a combination of CAP and nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs (zirconium oxide nanoparticle) and 3Y-TZP NPs (3% mol Yttria Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal Nanoparticle)) for lung cancer therapy. We found that ZrO2 NPs caused obvious damage to the inside of the lung cancer cells. CAP and ZrO2 NPs mainly affected the mitochondria function, leading to a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP levels, and causing endoplasmic reticulum stress and cell nucleus internal DNA damage, etc. CAP combined with ZrO2 NPs (CAP@ZrO2) induced lung cancer cell apoptosis by activating the TGF-\b{eta} pathway. CAP@ZrO2 offers a new therapy for the clinical treatment of lung cancer.

GenNBV: Generalizable Next-Best-View Policy for Active 3D Reconstruction

While recent advances in neural radiance field enable realistic digitization for large-scale scenes, the image-capturing process is still time-consuming and labor-intensive. Previous works attempt to automate this process using the Next-Best-View (NBV) policy for active 3D reconstruction. However, the existing NBV policies heavily rely on hand-crafted criteria, limited action space, or per-scene optimized representations. These constraints limit their cross-dataset generalizability. To overcome them, we propose GenNBV, an end-to-end generalizable NBV policy. Our policy adopts a reinforcement learning (RL)-based framework and extends typical limited action space to 5D free space. It empowers our agent drone to scan from any viewpoint, and even interact with unseen geometries during training. To boost the cross-dataset generalizability, we also propose a novel multi-source state embedding, including geometric, semantic, and action representations. We establish a benchmark using the Isaac Gym simulator with the Houses3K and OmniObject3D datasets to evaluate this NBV policy. Experiments demonstrate that our policy achieves a 98.26% and 97.12% coverage ratio on unseen building-scale objects from these datasets, respectively, outperforming prior solutions.

A new approach to inverse Sturm-Liouville problems based on point interaction

In the present paper, motivated by point interaction, we propose a new and explicit approach to inverse Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems under Dirichlet boundary. More precisely, when a given Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem with the unknown integrable potential interacts with $δ$-function potentials, we obtain a family of perturbation problems, called point interaction models in quantum mechanics. Then, only depending on the first eigenvalues of these perturbed problems, we define and study the first eigenvalue function, by which the desired potential can be expressed explicitly and uniquely. As by-products, using the analytic function theoretic tools, we also generalize several fundamental theorems of classical Sturm-Liouville problems to measure differential equations.

Information Scrambling in Free Fermion Systems with a Sole Interaction

It is well established that the presence of single impurity can have a substantial impact on the transport properties of quantum many-body systems at low temperature. In this work, we investigate a close analog of this problem from the perspective of quantum information dynamics. We construct Brownian circuits and Clifford circuits consisting of a free fermion hopping term and a sole interaction. In both circuits, our findings reveal the emergence of operator scrambling. Notably, the growth of the operator can be mapped to the symmetric exclusion process in the presence of a source term localized at a single point. We demonstrate that in the one-dimensional system, both the operator and entanglement exhibit diffusive scaling. Conversely, in scenarios characterized by all-to-all hopping, the operator's size undergoes exponential growth, while the entanglement exhibits a linear increase over time.

We therefore provide a research roadmap for guiding our fellow researchers to achieve that as a whole. In this roadmap, we sum up six directions that we believe are urgently required for research to enable native intelligence in mobile devices. In each direction, we further summarize the current research progress and the gaps that still need to be filled by our fellow researchers.

ESALE: Enhancing Code-Summary Alignment Learning for Source Code Summarization

(Source) code summarization aims to automatically generate succinct natural language summaries for given code snippets. Such summaries play a significant role in promoting developers to understand and maintain code. Inspired by neural machine translation, deep learning-based code summarization techniques widely adopt an encoder-decoder framework, where the encoder transforms given code snippets into context vectors, and the decoder decodes context vectors into summaries. Recently, large-scale pre-trained models for source code are equipped with encoders capable of producing general context vectors and have achieved substantial improvements on code summarization. However, although they are usually trained mainly on code-focused tasks and can capture general code features, they still fall short in capturing specific features that need to be summarized. This paper proposes a novel approach to improve code summarization based on summary-focused tasks. Specifically, we exploit a multi-task learning paradigm to train the encoder on three summary-focused tasks to enhance its ability to learn code-summary alignment, including unidirectional language modeling (ULM), masked language modeling (MLM), and action word prediction (AWP). Unlike pre-trained models that mainly predict masked tokens in code snippets, we design ULM and MLM to predict masked words in summaries. Intuitively, predicting words based on given code snippets would help learn the code-summary alignment. Additionally, we introduce the domain-specific task AWP to enhance the ability of the encoder to learn the alignment between action words and code snippets. The extensive experiments on four datasets demonstrate that our approach, called ESALE significantly outperforms baselines in all three widely used metrics, including BLEU, METEOR, and ROUGE-L.

Additive engineering for Sb$_2$S$_3$ indoor photovoltaics with efficiency exceeding 17%

Indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) have attracted increasing attention for sustainably powering Internet of Things (IoT) electronics. Sb$_2$S$_3$ is a promising IPV candidate material with a bandgap of ~1.75 eV, which is near the optimal value for indoor energy harvesting. However, the performance of Sb$_2$S$_3$ solar cells is limited by nonradiative recombination, closely associated with the poor-quality absorber films. Additive engineering is an effective strategy to improved the properties of solution-processed films. This work shows that the addition of monoethanolamine (MEA) into the precursor solution allows the nucleation and growth of Sb$_2$S$_3$ films to be controlled, enabling the deposition of high-quality Sb$_2$S$_3$ absorbers with reduced grain boundary density, optimized band positions and increased carrier concentration. Complemented with computations, it is revealed that the incorporation of MEA leads to a more efficient and energetically favorable deposition for enhanced heterogeneous nucleation on the substrate, which increases the grain size and accelerates the deposition rate of Sb$_2$S$_3$ films. Due to suppressed carrier recombination and improved charge-carrier transport in Sb$_2$S$_3$ absorber films, the MEA-modulated Sb$_2$S$_3$ solar cell yields a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.22% under AM1.5G illumination, and an IPV PCE of 17.55% under 1000 lux white light emitting diode (WLED) illumination, which is the highest yet reported for Sb$_2$S$_3$ IPVs. Furthermore, we construct high performance large-area Sb$_2$S$_3$ IPV modules to power IoT wireless sensors, and realize the long-term continuous recording of environmental parameters under WLED illumination in an office. This work highlights the great prospect of Sb$_2$S$_3$ photovoltaics for indoor energy harvesting.
