CAMEL2: Enhancing weakly supervised learning for histopathology images by incorporating the significance ratio

Histopathology image analysis plays a crucial role in cancer diagnosis. However, training a clinically applicable segmentation algorithm requires pathologists to engage in labour-intensive labelling. In contrast, weakly supervised learning methods, which only require coarse-grained labels at the image level, can significantly reduce the labeling efforts. Unfortunately, while these methods perform reasonably well in slide-level prediction, their ability to locate cancerous regions, which is essential for many clinical applications, remains unsatisfactory. Previously, we proposed CAMEL, which achieves comparable results to those of fully supervised baselines in pixel-level segmentation. However, CAMEL requires 1,280x1,280 image-level binary annotations for positive WSIs. Here, we present CAMEL2, by introducing a threshold of the cancerous ratio for positive bags, it allows us to better utilize the information, consequently enabling us to scale up the image-level setting from 1,280x1,280 to 5,120x5,120 while maintaining the accuracy. Our results with various datasets, demonstrate that CAMEL2, with the help of 5,120x5,120 image-level binary annotations, which are easy to annotate, achieves comparable performance to that of a fully supervised baseline in both instance- and slide-level classifications.

Automated identification and quantification of myocardial inflammatory infiltration in digital histological images to diagnose myocarditis

This study aims to develop a new computational pathology approach that automates the identification and quantification of myocardial inflammatory infiltration in digital HE-stained images to provide a quantitative histological diagnosis of myocarditis.898 HE-stained whole slide images (WSIs) of myocardium from 154 heart transplant patients diagnosed with myocarditis or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) were included in this study. An automated DL-based computational pathology approach was developed to identify nuclei and detect myocardial inflammatory infiltration, enabling the quantification of the lymphocyte nuclear density (LND) on myocardial WSIs. A cutoff value based on the quantification of LND was proposed to determine if the myocardial inflammatory infiltration was present. The performance of our approach was evaluated with a five-fold cross-validation experiment, tested with an internal test set from the myocarditis group, and confirmed by an external test from a double-blind trial group. An LND of 1.02/mm2 could distinguish WSIs with myocarditis from those without. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) in the five-fold cross-validation experiment were 0.899 plus or minus 0.035, 0.971 plus or minus 0.017, 0.728 plus or minus 0.073 and 0.849 plus or minus 0.044, respectively. For the internal test set, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and AUC were 0.887, 0.971, 0.737, and 0.854, respectively. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and AUC for the external test set reached 0.853, 0.846, 0.858, and 0.852, respectively. Our new approach provides accurate and reliable quantification of the LND of myocardial WSIs, facilitating automated quantitative diagnosis of myocarditis with HE-stained images.

Enhancing GUI Exploration Coverage of Android Apps with Deep Link-Integrated Monkey

Mobile apps are ubiquitous in our daily lives for supporting different tasks such as reading and chatting. Despite the availability of many GUI testing tools, app testers still struggle with low testing code coverage due to tools frequently getting stuck in loops or overlooking activities with concealed entries. This results in a significant amount of testing time being spent on redundant and repetitive exploration of a few GUI pages. To address this, we utilize Android's deep links, which assist in triggering Android intents to lead users to specific pages and introduce a deep link-enhanced exploration method. This approach, integrated into the testing tool Monkey, gives rise to Delm (Deep Link-enhanced Monkey). Delm oversees the dynamic exploration process, guiding the tool out of meaningless testing loops to unexplored GUI pages. We provide a rigorous activity context mock-up approach for triggering existing Android intents to discover more activities with hidden entrances. We conduct experiments to evaluate Delm's effectiveness on activity context mock-up, activity coverage, method coverage, and crash detection. The findings reveal that Delm can mock up more complex activity contexts and significantly outperform state-of-the-art baselines with 27.2\% activity coverage, 21.13\% method coverage, and 23.81\% crash detection.

Evidence for a nearly orthogonal rotator in GX 301--2 with phase-resolved cyclotron resonant scattering features

Cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) are the absorption features in the X-ray spectra of strongly magnetized accretion neutron stars (NSs), which are probably the most reliable probe to the surface magnetic fields of NSs. The high mass X-ray binary GX 301--2 exhibits a very wide, variable and complicated CRSF in the average spectra, which should be two absorption lines based on NuStar and Insight-HXMT observations. With the Insight-HXMT frequent observations, we performed the phase-resolved spectroscopy and confirmed two cyclotron absorption lines in the phase-resolved spectra, with their centroid energy ratio $\sim 1.6-1.7$ in the super-critical luminosity case. A major hindrance in understanding those CRSFs is the very poorly constrained magnetic inclination angle, which is also a fundamental property of a NS and key to understanding the emission characteristics of a pulsar. Comparing the phase-resolved CRSF with simulated X-ray spectra, the magnetic inclination angle is found to be $\gtrsim 70^{\circ}$, i.e., nearly orthogonal between the NS's spin and magnetic axies. The implications of an orthogonal rotator and magnetic structure evolution in the accreting X-ray binary are also discussed.

Model-less Is the Best Model: Generating Pure Code Implementations to Replace On-Device DL Models

Recent studies show that deployed deep learning (DL) models such as those of Tensor Flow Lite (TFLite) can be easily extracted from real-world applications and devices by attackers to generate many kinds of attacks like adversarial attacks. Although securing deployed on-device DL models has gained increasing attention, no existing methods can fully prevent the aforementioned threats. Traditional software protection techniques have been widely explored, if on-device models can be implemented using pure code, such as C++, it will open the possibility of reusing existing software protection techniques. However, due to the complexity of DL models, there is no automatic method that can translate the DL models to pure code. To fill this gap, we propose a novel method, CustomDLCoder, to automatically extract the on-device model information and synthesize a customized executable program for a wide range of DL models. CustomDLCoder first parses the DL model, extracts its backend computing units, configures the computing units to a graph, and then generates customized code to implement and deploy the ML solution without explicit model representation. The synthesized program hides model information for DL deployment environments since it does not need to retain explicit model representation, preventing many attacks on the DL model. In addition, it improves ML performance because the customized code removes model parsing and preprocessing steps and only retains the data computing process. Our experimental results show that CustomDLCoder improves model security by disabling on-device model sniffing. Compared with the original on-device platform (i.e., TFLite), our method can accelerate model inference by 21.8% and 24.3% on x86-64 and ARM64 platforms, respectively. Most importantly, it can significantly reduce memory consumption by 68.8% and 36.0% on x86-64 and ARM64 platforms, respectively.

Fixed-Point Algorithms for Solving the Critical Value and Upper Tail Quantile of Kuiper's Statistics

Kuiper's statistic is a good measure for the difference of ideal distribution and empirical distribution in the goodness-of-fit test. However, it is a challenging problem to solve the critical value and upper tail quantile, or simply Kuiper pair, of Kuiper's statistics due to the difficulties of solving the nonlinear equation and reasonable approximation of infinite series. In this work, the contributions lie in three perspectives: firstly, the second order approximation for the infinite series of the cumulative distribution of the critical value is used to achieve higher precision; secondly, the principles and fixed-point algorithms for solving the Kuiper pair are presented with details; finally, finally, a mistake about the critical value $c^α_n$ for $(α, n)=(0.01,30)$ in Kuiper's distribution table has been labeled and corrected where $n$ is the sample capacity and $α$ is the upper tail quantile. The algorithms are verified and validated by comparing with the table provided by Kuiper. The methods and algorithms proposed are enlightening and worth of introducing to the college students, computer programmers, engineers, experimental psychologists and so on.

The bicoherence study of quasi-periodic oscillations in MAXI J1535-571

Bicoherence is a way to measure the phase coupling of triplets of Fourier frequencies. We use this method to analyze quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535$-$571 during its 2017 September-October outburst. The bicoherence provides an interesting new diagnostic to uncover QPO behaviour and the relationships between QPO harmonics and broadband noise. The bicoherence pattern of type-C QPOs starts as a 'web' pattern and changes to a 'hypotenuse' pattern after the presence of type-B QPOs, indicating that MAXI J1535$-$571 is a low-inclination source. The intensity of bicoherence also exhibits variations across different energy bands. We try to explain the bicoherence results in the scenario of a dual-corona geometry.

Clinically Feasible Diffusion Reconstruction for Highly-Accelerated Cardiac Cine MRI

The currently limited quality of accelerated cardiac cine reconstruction may potentially be improved by the emerging diffusion models, but the clinically unacceptable long processing time poses a challenge. We aim to develop a clinically feasible diffusion-model-based reconstruction pipeline to improve the image quality of cine MRI. A multi-in multi-out diffusion enhancement model together with fast inference strategies were developed to be used in conjunction with a reconstruction model. The diffusion reconstruction reduced spatial and temporal blurring in prospectively undersampled clinical data, as validated by experts inspection. The 1.5s per video processing time enabled the approach to be applied in clinical scenarios.

Spatiotemporal Diffusion Model with Paired Sampling for Accelerated Cardiac Cine MRI

Current deep learning reconstruction for accelerated cardiac cine MRI suffers from spatial and temporal blurring. We aim to improve image sharpness and motion delineation for cine MRI under high undersampling rates. A spatiotemporal diffusion enhancement model conditional on an existing deep learning reconstruction along with a novel paired sampling strategy was developed. The diffusion model provided sharper tissue boundaries and clearer motion than the original reconstruction in experts evaluation on clinical data. The innovative paired sampling strategy substantially reduced artificial noises in the generative results.

Federated Data Model

In artificial intelligence (AI), especially deep learning, data diversity and volume play a pivotal role in model development. However, training a robust deep learning model often faces challenges due to data privacy, regulations, and the difficulty of sharing data between different locations, especially for medical applications. To address this, we developed a method called the Federated Data Model (FDM). This method uses diffusion models to learn the characteristics of data at one site and then creates synthetic data that can be used at another site without sharing the actual data. We tested this approach with a medical image segmentation task, focusing on cardiac magnetic resonance images from different hospitals. Our results show that models trained with this method perform well both on the data they were originally trained on and on data from other sites. This approach offers a promising way to train accurate and privacy-respecting AI models across different locations.

ModelObfuscator: Obfuscating Model Information to Protect Deployed ML-based Systems

More and more edge devices and mobile apps are leveraging deep learning (DL) capabilities. Deploying such models on devices -- referred to as on-device models -- rather than as remote cloud-hosted services, has gained popularity because it avoids transmitting user data off of the device and achieves high response time. However, on-device models can be easily attacked, as they can be accessed by unpacking corresponding apps and the model is fully exposed to attackers. Recent studies show that attackers can easily generate white-box-like attacks for an on-device model or even inverse its training data. To protect on-device models from white-box attacks, we propose a novel technique called model obfuscation. Specifically, model obfuscation hides and obfuscates the key information -- structure, parameters and attributes -- of models by renaming, parameter encapsulation, neural structure obfuscation obfuscation, shortcut injection, and extra layer injection. We have developed a prototype tool ModelObfuscator to automatically obfuscate on-device TFLite models. Our experiments show that this proposed approach can dramatically improve model security by significantly increasing the difficulty of parsing models inner information, without increasing the latency of DL models. Our proposed on-device model obfuscation has the potential to be a fundamental technique for on-device model deployment. Our prototype tool is publicly available at: https://github.com/zhoumingyi/ModelObfuscator.

Triplet-constraint Transformer with Multi-scale Refinement for Dose Prediction in Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy is a primary treatment for cancers with the aim of applying sufficient radiation dose to the planning target volume (PTV) while minimizing dose hazards to the organs at risk (OARs). Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have automated the radiotherapy plan-making by predicting the dose maps. However, current CNN-based methods ignore the remarkable dose difference in the dose map, i.e., high dose value in the interior PTV while low value in the exterior PTV, leading to a suboptimal prediction. In this paper, we propose a triplet-constraint transformer (TCtrans) with multi-scale refinement to predict the high-quality dose distribution. Concretely, a novel PTV-guided triplet constraint is designed to refine dose feature representations in the interior and exterior PTV by utilizing the explicit geometry of PTV. Furthermore, we introduce a multi-scale refinement (MSR) module to effectively fulfill the triplet constraint in different decoding layers with multiple scales. Besides, a transformer encoder is devised to learn the important global dosimetric knowledge. Experiments on a clinical cervical cancer dataset demonstrate the superiority of our method.

EmbodiedScan: A Holistic Multi-Modal 3D Perception Suite Towards Embodied AI

In the realm of computer vision and robotics, embodied agents are expected to explore their environment and carry out human instructions. This necessitates the ability to fully understand 3D scenes given their first-person observations and contextualize them into language for interaction. However, traditional research focuses more on scene-level input and output setups from a global view. To address the gap, we introduce EmbodiedScan, a multi-modal, ego-centric 3D perception dataset and benchmark for holistic 3D scene understanding. It encompasses over 5k scans encapsulating 1M ego-centric RGB-D views, 1M language prompts, 160k 3D-oriented boxes spanning over 760 categories, some of which partially align with LVIS, and dense semantic occupancy with 80 common categories. Building upon this database, we introduce a baseline framework named Embodied Perceptron. It is capable of processing an arbitrary number of multi-modal inputs and demonstrates remarkable 3D perception capabilities, both within the two series of benchmarks we set up, i.e., fundamental 3D perception tasks and language-grounded tasks, and in the wild. Codes, datasets, and benchmarks will be available at https://github.com/OpenRobotLab/EmbodiedScan.

Chance-Constrained Multiple-Choice Knapsack Problem: Model, Algorithms, and Applications

The multiple-choice knapsack problem (MCKP) is a classic NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. Motivated by several significant real-world applications, this work investigates a novel variant of MCKP called chance-constrained multiple-choice knapsack problem (CCMCKP), where the item weights are random variables. In particular, we focus on the practical scenario of CCMCKP, where the probability distributions of random weights are unknown but only sample data is available. We first present the problem formulation of CCMCKP and then establish two benchmark sets. The first set contains synthetic instances and the second set is devised to simulate a real-world application scenario of a certain telecommunication company. To solve CCMCKP, we propose a data-driven adaptive local search (DDALS) algorithm. The main novelty of DDALS lies in its data-driven solution evaluation approach that can effectively handle unknown probability distributions of item weights. Moreover, in cases with unknown distributions, high intensity of chance constraints, limited amount of sample data and large-scale problems, it still exhibits good performance. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of DDALS over other baselines on the two benchmarks. Additionally, ablation studies confirm the effectiveness of each component of the algorithm. Finally, DDALS can serve as the baseline for future research, and the benchmark sets are open-sourced to further promote research on this challenging problem.

Spectroscopy-Guided Discovery of Three-Dimensional Structures of Disordered Materials with Diffusion Models

The ability to rapidly develop materials with desired properties has a transformative impact on a broad range of emerging technologies. In this work, we introduce a new framework based on the diffusion model, a recent generative machine learning method to predict 3D structures of disordered materials from a target property. For demonstration, we apply the model to identify the atomic structures of amorphous carbons ($a$-C) as a representative material system from the target X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra--a common experimental technique to probe atomic structures of materials. We show that conditional generation guided by XANES spectra reproduces key features of the target structures. Furthermore, we show that our model can steer the generative process to tailor atomic arrangements for a specific XANES spectrum. Finally, our generative model exhibits a remarkable scale-agnostic property, thereby enabling generation of realistic, large-scale structures through learning from a small-scale dataset (i.e., with small unit cells). Our work represents a significant stride in bridging the gap between materials characterization and atomic structure determination; in addition, it can be leveraged for materials discovery in exploring various material properties as targeted.

Entanglement dynamics in U(1) symmetric hybrid quantum automaton circuits

We study the entanglement dynamics of quantum automaton (QA) circuits in the presence of U(1) symmetry. We find that the second Rényi entropy grows diffusively with a logarithmic correction as $\sqrt{t\ln{t}}$, saturating the bound established by Huang [IOP SciNotes 1, 035205 (2020)]. Thanks to the special feature of QA circuits, we understand the entanglement dynamics in terms of a classical bit string model. Specifically, we argue that the diffusive dynamics stems from the rare slow modes containing extensively long domains of spin 0s or 1s. Additionally, we investigate the entanglement dynamics of monitored QA circuits by introducing a composite measurement that preserves both the U(1) symmetry and properties of QA circuits. We find that as the measurement rate increases, there is a transition from a volume-law phase where the second Rényi entropy persists the diffusive growth (up to a logarithmic correction) to a critical phase where it grows logarithmically in time. This interesting phenomenon distinguishes QA circuits from non-automaton circuits such as U(1)-symmetric Haar random circuits, where a volume-law to an area-law phase transition exists, and any non-zero rate of projective measurements in the volume-law phase leads to a ballistic growth of the Rényi entropy.

Improving End-to-End Speech Processing by Efficient Text Data Utilization with Latent Synthesis

Training a high performance end-to-end speech (E2E) processing model requires an enormous amount of labeled speech data, especially in the era of data-centric artificial intelligence. However, labeled speech data are usually scarcer and more expensive for collection, compared to textual data. We propose Latent Synthesis (LaSyn), an efficient textual data utilization framework for E2E speech processing models. We train a latent synthesizer to convert textual data into an intermediate latent representation of a pre-trained speech model. These pseudo acoustic representations of textual data augment acoustic data for model training. We evaluate LaSyn on low-resource automatic speech recognition (ASR) and spoken language understanding (SLU) tasks. For ASR, LaSyn improves an E2E baseline trained on LibriSpeech train-clean-100, with relative word error rate reductions over 22.3% on different test sets. For SLU, LaSyn improves our E2E baseline by absolute 4.1% for intent classification accuracy and 3.8% for slot filling SLU-F1 on SLURP, and absolute 4.49% and 2.25% for exact match (EM) and EM-Tree accuracies on STOP respectively. With fewer parameters, the results of LaSyn are competitive to published state-of-the-art works. The results demonstrate the quality of the augmented training data.

Signatures of a Majorana-Fermi surface in the Kitaev magnet Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$

Detecting Majorana fermions in experimental realizations of the Kitaev honeycomb model is often complicated by non-trivial interactions inherent to potential spin liquid candidates. In this work, we identify several distinct thermodynamic signatures of massive, itinerant Majorana fermions within the well-established analytical paradigm of Landau-Fermi liquid theory. We find a qualitative and quantitative agreement between the salient features of our Landau-Majorana liquid theory and the Kitaev spin liquid candidate Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. Our study presents strong evidence for a Fermi liquid-like ground state in the fundamental excitations of a honeycomb iridate, and opens new experimental avenues to detect itinerant Majorana fermions in condensed matter systems.
