GPTA: Generative Prompt Tuning Assistant for Synergistic Downstream Neural Network Enhancement with LLMs

This study introduces GPTA, a Large Language Model assistance training framework, that enhances the training of downstream task models via prefix prompt. By minimizing data exposure to LLM, the framework addresses the security and legal challenges of applying LLM in downstream task model training. GPTA utilizes a new synergistic training approach, optimizing the downstream models with parameter gradients and LLMs with the novel ``dialogue gradient''. The framework not only demonstrates significant improvements in model performance across six NLP benchmark datasets, but also reduces overfitting in low-resource scenarios effectively. The detailed analyses further validate that our pioneer framework provides a cost-efficient and adaptive method for downstream task model training with LLM support.

Deep Point Cloud Normal Estimation via Triplet Learning

Normal estimation on 3D point clouds is a fundamental problem in 3D vision and graphics. Current methods often show limited accuracy in predicting normals at sharp features (e.g., edges and corners) and less robustness to noise. In this paper, we propose a novel normal estimation method for point clouds. It consists of two phases: (a) feature encoding which learns representations of local patches, and (b) normal estimation that takes the learned representation as input and regresses the normal vector. We are motivated that local patches on isotropic and anisotropic surfaces have similar or distinct normals, and that separable features or representations can be learned to facilitate normal estimation. To realise this, we first construct triplets of local patches on 3D point cloud data, and design a triplet network with a triplet loss for feature encoding. We then design a simple network with several MLPs and a loss function to regress the normal vector. Despite having a smaller network size compared to most other methods, experimental results show that our method preserves sharp features and achieves better normal estimation results on CAD-like shapes.

Who Uses Personas in Requirements Engineering: The Practitioners' Perspective

Personas are commonly used in software projects to gain a better understanding of end-users' needs. However, there is a limited understanding of their usage and effectiveness in practice. This paper presents the results of a two-step investigation, comprising interviews with 26 software developers, UI/UX designers, business analysts and product managers and a survey of 203 practitioners, aimed at shedding light on the current practices, methods and challenges of using personas in software development. Our findings reveal variations in the frequency and effectiveness of personas across different software projects and IT companies, the challenges practitioners face when using personas and the reasons for not using them at all. Furthermore, we investigate the coverage of human aspects in personas, often assumed to be a key feature of persona descriptions. Contrary to the general perception, our study shows that human aspects are often ignored for various reasons in personas or requirements engineering in general. Our study provides actionable insights for practitioners to overcome challenges in using personas during requirements engineering stages, and we identify areas for future research.

Anomalous acousto-current within the quantum Hall plateaus

We systematically study the acousto-current of two-dimensional electron systems in the integer and fractional quantum Hall regimes using surface acoustic waves. We are able to separate the co-existing acoustic scattering and drag, when phonons induce drag current and tune the electron conductivity, respectively. At large acoustic power, the drag current is finite when the system is compressible and exhibits minima when incompressible quantum Hall effects appear. Surprisingly, it exhibits anomalously large bipolar spikes within the quantum Hall plateaus while it vanishes linearly with reduced acoustic power at compressible phases. The current peaks reverse their polarity at the two flanks of exact integer or fractional fillings, consistent with the opposite electric charge of the quasiparticle/quasihole.

Heavy-quark pair production at lepton colliders at NNNLO in QCD

We compute the total cross-section and invariant mass distribution for heavy-quark pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. The obtained results are expressed as piecewise functions defined by several deeply expanded power series, facilitating a rapid numerical evaluation. Utilizing top-pair production at a collision energy of 500 GeV as a benchmark, we observe a correction of approximately $0.1\%$ for the total cross-section and around $10\%$ for the majority of the invariant mass distribution range. These results play a crucial role in significantly reducing theoretical uncertainty: the scale dependence has been diminished to $0.06\%$ for the total cross-section and to $5\%$ for the invariant mass distribution. This reduction of uncertainty meets the stringent requirements of future lepton colliders.

iRoCo: Intuitive Robot Control From Anywhere Using a Smartwatch

This paper introduces iRoCo (intuitive Robot Control) - a framework for ubiquitous human-robot collaboration using a single smartwatch and smartphone. By integrating probabilistic differentiable filters, iRoCo optimizes a combination of precise robot control and unrestricted user movement from ubiquitous devices. We demonstrate and evaluate the effectiveness of iRoCo in practical teleoperation and drone piloting applications. Comparative analysis shows no significant difference between task performance with iRoCo and gold-standard control systems in teleoperation tasks. Additionally, iRoCo users complete drone piloting tasks 32\% faster than with a traditional remote control and report less frustration in a subjective load index questionnaire. Our findings strongly suggest that iRoCo is a promising new approach for intuitive robot control through smartwatches and smartphones from anywhere, at any time. Systematic study of cluster radioactivity in trans-lead nuclei within various versions of proximity potential formalisms

In this work, based on the framework of the Coulomb and proximity potential model (CPPM), we systematically study the cluster radioactivity half-lives of 26 trans-lead nuclei by considering the cluster preformation probability which is found to possess a simple mass dependence on the emitted cluster by R. Blendowske and H. Walliser [Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 1930(1988)]. Meanwhile, we investigate 28 different versions of the proximity potential formalisms, which are the most complete known proximity potential formalisms and have been proposed for the description of proton radioactivity, two-proton radioactivity, α decay, heavy-ion radioactivity, quasi-elastic scattering, fusion reactions and other applications. The calculated results show that the modified forms of proximity potential 1977 denoted as Prox.77-12 and the proximity potential 1981 denoted as Prox.81 are the most appropriate proximity potential formalisms for the study of cluster radioactivity as the root-mean-square deviation between experimental data and relevant theoretical results obtained are least and the both values are 0.681. For comparison, a universal decay law (UDL) proposed by Qi et al. [Phys. Rev. C 80, 044326 (2009)], a unified formula of half-lives for α decay and cluster radioactivity proposed by Ni et al. [Phys. Rev. C 78, 044310 (2008)] and a scaling law (SL) in cluster decay proposed by Horoi et al. [J. Phys. G 30, 945 (2004)] are also used. In addition, utilizing CPPM with Prox.77- 12, Prox.77-1, Prox.77-2 and Prox.81, we predict the half-lives of 51 potential cluster radioactive candidates whose cluster radioactivity is energetically allowed or observed but not yet quantified in NUBASE2020. The predicted results are in the same order of magnitude with those obtained by using the compared semi-empirical and/or empirical formulae.

Safe Hybrid-Action Reinforcement Learning-Based Decision and Control for Discretionary Lane Change

Autonomous lane-change, a key feature of advanced driver-assistance systems, can enhance traffic efficiency and reduce the incidence of accidents. However, safe driving of autonomous vehicles remains challenging in complex environments. How to perform safe and appropriate lane change is a popular topic of research in the field of autonomous driving. Currently, few papers consider the safety of reinforcement learning in autonomous lane-change scenarios. We introduce safe hybrid-action reinforcement learning into discretionary lane change for the first time and propose Parameterized Soft Actor-Critic with PID Lagrangian (PASAC-PIDLag) algorithm. Furthermore, we conduct a comparative analysis of the Parameterized Soft Actor-Critic (PASAC), which is an unsafe version of PASAC-PIDLag. Both algorithms are employed to train the lane-change strategy of autonomous vehicles to output discrete lane-change decision and longitudinal vehicle acceleration. Our simulation results indicate that at a traffic density of 15 vehicles per kilometer (15 veh/km), the PASAC-PIDLag algorithm exhibits superior safety with a collision rate of 0%, outperforming the PASAC algorithm, which has a collision rate of 1%. The outcomes of the generalization assessments reveal that at low traffic density levels, both the PASAC-PIDLag and PASAC algorithms are proficient in attaining a 0% collision rate. Under conditions of high traffic flow density, the PASAC-PIDLag algorithm surpasses PASAC in terms of both safety and optimality.

Crimson: Empowering Strategic Reasoning in Cybersecurity through Large Language Models

We introduces Crimson, a system that enhances the strategic reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) within the realm of cybersecurity. By correlating CVEs with MITRE ATT&CK techniques, Crimson advances threat anticipation and strategic defense efforts. Our approach includes defining and evaluating cybersecurity strategic tasks, alongside implementing a comprehensive human-in-the-loop data-synthetic workflow to develop the CVE-to-ATT&CK Mapping (CVEM) dataset. We further enhance LLMs' reasoning abilities through a novel Retrieval-Aware Training (RAT) process and its refined iteration, RAT-R. Our findings demonstrate that an LLM fine-tuned with our techniques, possessing 7 billion parameters, approaches the performance level of GPT-4, showing markedly lower rates of hallucination and errors, and surpassing other models in strategic reasoning tasks. Moreover, domain-specific fine-tuning of embedding models significantly improves performance within cybersecurity contexts, underscoring the efficacy of our methodology. By leveraging Crimson to convert raw vulnerability data into structured and actionable insights, we bolster proactive cybersecurity defenses.

A high-precision result for a full-color three-loop three-point form factor in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM

We perform a high-precision computation of the three-loop three-point form factor of the stress-tensor supermultiplet in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. Both the leading-color and non-leading-color form factors are expanded in terms of simple integrals. We compute the complete set of integrals at a special kinematic point with very high precision using $\mathtt{AMFlow}$. The high-precision leading-color result enables us to obtain the analytic form of a numerical constant in the three-loop BDS ansatz, which is previously known only numerically. The high-precision values of the non-leading-color finite remainder as well as all integrals are also presented, which can be valuable for future use.

Using Left and Right Brains Together: Towards Vision and Language Planning

Large Language Models (LLMs) and Large Multi-modality Models (LMMs) have demonstrated remarkable decision masking capabilities on a variety of tasks. However, they inherently operate planning within the language space, lacking the vision and spatial imagination ability. In contrast, humans utilize both left and right hemispheres of the brain for language and visual planning during the thinking process. Therefore, we introduce a novel vision-language planning framework in this work to perform concurrent visual and language planning for tasks with inputs of any form. Our framework incorporates visual planning to capture intricate environmental details, while language planning enhances the logical coherence of the overall system. We evaluate the effectiveness of our framework across vision-language tasks, vision-only tasks, and language-only tasks. The results demonstrate the superior performance of our approach, indicating that the integration of visual and language planning yields better contextually aware task execution.

Reconstruction of rational functions made simple

We present a new method for the reconstruction of rational functions through finite-fields sampling that can significantly reduce the number of samples required. The method works by exploiting all the independent linear relations among target functions. Subsequently, the explicit solutions of the functions can be efficiently obtained by solving the linear system. As a first application, we utilize the method to address various examples within the context of Feynman integrals reduction. These examples demonstrate that our method can substantially improve the computational efficiency, making it useful for future computations in particle physics.

We present a superheterodyne-scheme demodulation system which can detect the amplitude and phaseshift of weak radio-frequency signals with extraordinarily high stability and resolution. As a demonstration, we introduce a process to measure the velocity of the surface acoustic wave using a delay-line device from 30 K to room temperature, which can resolve $\textless$ 0.1ppm velocity shift. Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of using this surface acoustic wave device as a calibration-free, high sensitivity and fast response thermometer.

Probing quantum phases in ultra-high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems using surface acoustic waves

Transport measurement, which applies an electric field and studies the migration of charged particles, i.e. the current, is the most widely used technique in condensed matter studies. It is generally assumed that the quantum phase remains unchanged when it hosts a sufficiently small probing current, which is, surprisingly, rarely examined experimentally. In this work, we study the ultra-high mobility two-dimensional electron system using a propagating surface acoustic wave, whose traveling speed is affected by the electrons' compressibility. The acoustic power used in our study is several orders of magnitude lower than previous reports, and its induced perturbation to the system is smaller than the transport current. Therefore we are able to observe the quantum phases become more incompressible when hosting a perturbative current.

A Systematic Review of Available Datasets in Additive Manufacturing

In-situ monitoring incorporating data from visual and other sensor technologies, allows the collection of extensive datasets during the Additive Manufacturing (AM) process. These datasets have potential for determining the quality of the manufactured output and the detection of defects through the use of Machine Learning during the manufacturing process. Open and annotated datasets derived from AM processes are necessary for the machine learning community to address this opportunity, which creates difficulties in the application of computer vision-related machine learning in AM. This systematic review investigates the availability of open image-based datasets originating from AM processes that align with a number of pre-defined selection criteria. The review identifies existing gaps among the current image-based datasets in the domain of AM, and points to the need for greater availability of open datasets in order to allow quality assessment and defect detection during additive manufacturing, to develop.

BET: Explaining Deep Reinforcement Learning through The Error-Prone Decisions

Despite the impressive capabilities of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agents in many challenging scenarios, their black-box decision-making process significantly limits their deployment in safety-sensitive domains. Several previous self-interpretable works focus on revealing the critical states of the agent's decision. However, they cannot pinpoint the error-prone states. To address this issue, we propose a novel self-interpretable structure, named Backbone Extract Tree (BET), to better explain the agent's behavior by identify the error-prone states. At a high level, BET hypothesizes that states in which the agent consistently executes uniform decisions exhibit a reduced propensity for errors. To effectively model this phenomenon, BET expresses these states within neighborhoods, each defined by a curated set of representative states. Therefore, states positioned at a greater distance from these representative benchmarks are more prone to error. We evaluate BET in various popular RL environments and show its superiority over existing self-interpretable models in terms of explanation fidelity. Furthermore, we demonstrate a use case for providing explanations for the agents in StarCraft II, a sophisticated multi-agent cooperative game. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to explain such a complex scenarios using a fully transparent structure.

Language-free Compositional Action Generation via Decoupling Refinement

Composing simple elements into complex concepts is crucial yet challenging, especially for 3D action generation. Existing methods largely rely on extensive neural language annotations to discern composable latent semantics, a process that is often costly and labor-intensive. In this study, we introduce a novel framework to generate compositional actions without reliance on language auxiliaries. Our approach consists of three main components: Action Coupling, Conditional Action Generation, and Decoupling Refinement. Action Coupling utilizes an energy model to extract the attention masks of each sub-action, subsequently integrating two actions using these attentions to generate pseudo-training examples. Then, we employ a conditional generative model, CVAE, to learn a latent space, facilitating the diverse generation. Finally, we propose Decoupling Refinement, which leverages a self-supervised pre-trained model MAE to ensure semantic consistency between the sub-actions and compositional actions. This refinement process involves rendering generated 3D actions into 2D space, decoupling these images into two sub-segments, using the MAE model to restore the complete image from sub-segments, and constraining the recovered images to match images rendered from raw sub-actions. Due to the lack of existing datasets containing both sub-actions and compositional actions, we created two new datasets, named HumanAct-C and UESTC-C, and present a corresponding evaluation metric. Both qualitative and quantitative assessments are conducted to show our efficacy.
