Seesaw Models with Minimal Flavor Violation

We explore realizations of minimal flavor violation (MFV) for leptons in the simplest seesaw models where the neutrino mass generation mechanism is driven by new fermion singlets (type I) or triplets (type III) and by a scalar triplet (type II). We also discuss similarities and differences of the MFV implementation among the three scenarios. To study the phenomenological implications, we consider a number of effective dimension-six operators that are purely leptonic or couple leptons to the standard-model gauge and Higgs bosons and evaluate constraints on the scale of MFV associated with these operators from the latest experimental information. Specifically, we employ the most recent measurements of neutrino mixing parameters as well as the currently available data on flavor-violating radiative and three-body decays of charged leptons, mu -> e conversion in nuclei, the anomalous magnetic moments of charged leptons, and their electric dipole moments. The most stringent lower-limit on the MFV scale comes from the present experimental bound on mu -> e gamma and can reach 500 TeV or higher, depending on the details of the seesaw scheme. With our numerical results, we illustrate some important differences among the seesaw types. In particular, we show that in types I and III there are features which can bring about potentially remarkable effects which do not occur in type II. In addition, we comment on how one of the new effective operators can induce flavor-changing dilepton decays of the Higgs boson, which may be probed in upcoming searches at the LHC.

Predictive $CP$ Violating Relations for Charmless Two-body Decays of Beauty Baryons $Ξ^{-,\;0}_b$ and $Λ_b^0$ With Flavor $SU(3)$ Symmetry

Several baryons containing a heavy b-quark have been discovered. The decays of these states provide new platform for testing the standard model (SM). We study $CP$ violation in SM for charmless two-body decays of the flavor $SU(3)$ anti-triplet beauty baryon (b-baryon) ${\cal B} = (Ξ^-_b,\;Ξ^0_b,\;Λ_b^0)$ in a model independent way. We found, in the flavor $SU(3)$ symmetry limit, a set of new predictive relations among the branching ratio $Br$ and $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}$ for $\cal B$ decays, such as $A_{CP}(Ξ_b^-\to K^0 Ξ^-)/A_{CP}(Ξ_b^-\to \bar K^0 Σ^-) = - Br(Ξ_b^- \to \bar K^0 Σ^-)/Br(Ξ_b^- \to K^0 Σ^-)$, $A_{CP}(Λ_b^0 \to π^- p)/A_{CP} (Ξ^0_b \to K^- Σ^+) = -Br(Ξ^0_b \to K^- Σ^+)τ_{Λ_b^0}/Br(Λ_b^0 \to π^- p)τ_{Ξ^0_b}$,and $A_{CP}(Λ_b^0 \to K^- p)/ A_{CP} (Ξ^0_b \to π^- Σ^+) = -Br(Ξ^0_b \to π^- Σ^+)τ_{Λ_b^0}/ Br(Λ_b^0 \to K^- p)τ_{Ξ^0_b}$. Future data from LHCb can test these relations and also other relations found.

Glueball Production via Gluonic Penguin B Decays

We study glueball $G$ production in gluonic penguin decay $B\to G + X_s$, using the next-to-leading order $b\to s g^*$ gluonic penguin interaction and effective couplings of a glueball to two perturbative gluons. Subsequent decays of a scalar glueball are described by using techniques of effective chiral Lagrangian to incorporate the interaction between a glueball and pseudoscalar mesons. Mixing effects between the pure glueball with other mesons are considered. Identifying the $f_0(1710)$ to be a scalar glueball, we find that both the top and charm penguin to be important and obtain a sizable branching ratio for $B\to f_0(1710) + X_s$ of order $1.3\times 10^{-4} (f/0.07\mbox{GeV}^{-1})^2$, where the effective coupling strength $f$ is estimated to be $0.07$ GeV$^{-1}$ using experimental data for the branching ratio of $f_0(1710) \to K \overline K$ based on chiral Lagrangian estimate. An alternative perturbative QCD based estimation of $f$ is a factor of 20 larger, which would imply a much enhanced branching ratio. Glueball production from this rare semi-inclusive $B$ decay can be probed at the LHCb and Belle II to narrow down the allowed parameter space. Similar branching ratio is expected for the pseudoscalar glueball. We also briefly comment on the case of vector and tensor glueballs.

SU(3) and Isospin Breaking Effects on B to PPP Amplitudes

Several modes of $B$ decays into three pseudoscalar octet mesons PPP have been measured. These decays have provided useful information for B decays in the standard model (SM). Some of powerful tools in analyzing B decays are flavor $SU(3)$ and isospin symmetries. Such analyses are usually hampered by $SU(3)$ breaking effects due to a relatively large strange quark mass which breaks SU(3) symmetry down to isospin symmetry. The isospin symmetry also breaks down when up and down quark mass difference is non-zero. It is therefore interesting to find relations which are not sensitive to $SU(3)$ and isospin breaking effects. We find that the relations among several fully-symmetric $B \to PPP$ decay amplitudes are not affected by first order $SU(3)$ breaking effects due to a non-zero strange quark mass, and also some of them are not affected by first isospin breaking effects. These relations, therefore, hold to good precisions. Measurements for these relations can provide important information about B decays in the SM.

Probing Higgs Boson $CP$ Properties with $t\bar{t}H$ at the LHC and the 100 TeV $pp$ Collider

The Higgs boson $H$ has the largest coupling to the top quark $t$ among the standard model (SM) fermions. This is one of the ideal places to investigate new physics beyond SM. In this work, we study the potential of determining Higgs boson $CP$ properties at the LHC and future 33 TeV and 100 TeV $pp$ colliders by analysing various operators formed from final states variables in $t\bar{t}H$ production. The discrimination power from SM coupling is obtained with Higgs boson reconstructed from $ H\to γγ$ and $ H\to b \bar{b}$. We find that $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ process can provide more than 3$σ$ discrimination power with 300 $fb^{-1}$ integrated luminosity in a wide range of allowed Higgs to top couplings for the LHC, the 33 TeV and 100 TeV colliders. For $t\bar{t}γγ$ the discrimination power will be below 3$σ$ at the LHC, while for 33 TeV and 100 TeV colliders, more than 3$σ$ sensitivity can be reached.

Fermion EDMs with Minimal Flavor Violation

We study the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fermions in the standard model supplemented with right-handed neutrinos and its extension including neutrino seesaw mechanism under the framework of minimal flavor violation (MFV). In the quark sector, we find that the current experimental bound on the neutron EDM does not yield a significant restriction on the scale of MFV. In addition, we consider how MFV may affect the contribution of the strong theta-term to the neutron EDM. For the leptons, the existing EDM data also do not lead to strict limits if neutrinos are Dirac particles. On the other hand, if neutrinos are Majorana in nature, we find that the constraints become substantially stronger. Moreover, the results of the latest search for the electron EDM by the ACME Collaboration are sensitive to the MFV scale of order a few hundred GeV or higher. We also look at constraints from $CP$-violating electron-nucleon interactions that have been probed in atomic and molecular EDM searches.

Large electron electric dipole moment in minimal flavor violation framework with Majorana neutrinos

The latest data from the ACME Collaboration have put a stringent constraint on the electric dipole moment d_e of the electron. Nevertheless, the standard model (SM) prediction for d_e is many orders of magnitude below the new result, making this observable a powerful probe for physics beyond the SM. We carry out a model-independent study of d_e in the SM with right handed neutrinos and its extension with the neutrino seesaw mechanism under the framework of minimal flavor violation. We find that d_e crucially depends on whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles. In the Majorana case, d_e can reach its experimental bound, and it constrains the scale of minimal flavor violation to be above a few hundred GeV or more. We also explore extra CP-violating sources in the Yukawa couplings of the right-handed neutrinos. Such new sources can have important effects on d_e.

A Light Sterile Neutrino from Friedberg-Lee Symmetry

Light sterile neutrinos of mass about an eV with mixing $\tilde U_{ls}$ of a few percent to active neutrinos may solve some anomalies shown in experimental data related to neutrino oscillation. How to have light sterile neutrinos is one of the theoretical problems which have attracted a lot of attentions. In this article we show that such an eV scale light sterile neutrino candidate can be obtained in a seesaw model in which the right-handed neutrinos satisfy a softly-broken Friedberg-Lee (FL) symmetry. In this model a right-handed neutrino is guaranteed by the FL symmetry to be light comparing with other two heavy right-handed neutrinos. It can be of eV scale when the FL symmetry is softly broken and can play the role of eV scale sterile neutrino needed for explaining the anomalies of experimental data. This model predicts that one of the active neutrino is massless. We find that this model prefers inverted hierarchy mass pattern of active neutrinos than normal hierarchy. An interesting consequence of this model is that realizing relatively large $|{\tilde U}_{es}|$ and relatively small $|{\tilde U}_{μs}|$ in this model naturally leads to a relatively small $|{\tilde U}_{τs}|$. This interesting prediction can be tested in future atmospheric or solar neutrino experiments.

Large SU(3) breaking effects and CP violation in $B^+ $ decays into three charged SU(3) octet pseudoscalar mesons

TThe LHCb collaboration has recently reported evidence for non-zero CP asymmetries in $B^+$ decays into $π^+ K^+ K^-,\; π^+π^+π^-,\; K^+ K^+ K^- $ and $K^+π^+π^-$. The branching ratios for these decays have also been measured with different values ranging from $5\times 10^{-6}$ to $51\times 10^{-6}$. If flavor $SU(3)$ symmetry is a good symmetry for $B$ decays, in the case that the dominant amplitude is momentum independent it is expected that branching ratios $Br$ and CP violating rate differences $Δ_{CP} = Γ- \overlineΓ$ satisfy, $Br(π^+π^+π^-) = 2Br(π^+ K^+ K^-)$, $Br(K^+K^+K^-) = 2 Br(K^+π^+π^-)$, and $Δ_{CP}(π^+π^+π^-) = 2Δ_{CP}(π^+ K^+K^-) = - Δ_{CP}(K^+K^+K^-) = -2Δ_{CP}(K^+π^+π^-)$. The experimental data do not exhibit the expected pattern for the branching ratios. The rate differences for $B^+\to π^+π^+π^-$ and $B^+\to K^+ K^+ K^-$ satisfy the relation between $ΔS =0$ and $ΔS=1$ well, but the other two do not, with the CP asymmetries having different signs than expected. In this work we study how to including momentum dependent and also $SU(3)$ breaking effects on these decays to explain experimental data. We find that only including lowest order derivative terms, in the $SU(3)$ limit, the decay patterns cannot be explained. Large $SU(3)$ breaking effects are needed to explain the data.

U-spin analysis of CP violation in $B^- $ decays into three charged light pseudoscalar mesons

We carry out a $U$-spin symmetry analysis for CP violation in $B^- $ decays into three light $π^-π^-π^+$, $π^- K^-K^+$, $K^-K^-K^+$ and $K^- π^-π^+$ mesons. We clarify some subtle points in constructing decay amplitudes with $U=0$ formed by the two negatively charged light mesons in the final states. $U$-spin conserving momentum independent and momentum dependent decay amplitudes, and $U$-spin violating decay amplitudes due to quark mass difference are constructed.

Low-Mass Dark-Matter Hint from CDMS II, Higgs Boson at the LHC, and Darkon Models

The CDMS II experiment has observed three events which may have arisen from weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter (DM) with mass of order 9 GeV colliding with nuclei. Although the implied WIMP parameter region seems to be excluded by limits from the XENON experiments, it is interesting that most of this tension can go away if the WIMP-nucleon interaction violates isospin. This motivates us to explore some of the implications for models in which a real gauge-singlet scalar particle, the darkon, serves as the WIMP, taking into account the recent discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC and Planck determination of the DM relic density. In the simplest scenario, involving only the standard model plus a darkon, the Higgs boson is largely invisible due to its decay into a pair of darkons having the WIMP mass suggested by CDMS II and hence cannot be identified with the one found at the LHC. We find, on the other hand, that a two-Higgs-doublet model supplemented with a darkon has ample parameter space to accommodate well both the new potential DM hint from CDMS II and the Higgs data from the LHC, whether or not the darkon-nucleon interaction conserves isospin.

CP Violation in $B^0_s \to K^-π^+$, $B^0 \to K^+π^-$ Decays and Tests for SU(3) Flavor Symmetry Predictions

The LHCb collaboration has recently measured the first direct CP violation in $B^0_s$ decays with a rate asymmetry $A_{CP}(B^0_s\to K^- π^+)$ given by $0.27 \pm 0.04(stat)\pm 0.01(syst)$. At the same time they also made the most precise measurement for $A_{CP}(B^0 \to K^+ π^-) = -0.080\pm 0.007(stat)\pm 0.003(syst)$. These data confirm the predicted relation, $A_{CP}(B^0 \to K^+ π^-)/A_{CP}(B^0_s \to K^- π^+) = - Br(B^0_s\to K^- π^+)τ_{B^0}/Br(B^0 \to K^+ π^-)τ_{B^0_s}$, in the standard model with SU(3) flavor symmetry. We discuss possible modifications due to SU(3) breaking effects to this relation. There are several other similar relations in B decays. Using current available data we study whether relevant relations hold in $B^0$ and $B^0_s$ to $PP$ and $PV$ decays. Here $P$ and $V$ indicate pesudoscalar and vector mesons in the flavor octet representations.

Interplay between new physics in one-loop Higgs couplings and the top-quark Yukawa coupling

After the discovery of a 126 GeV state at the LHC it is imperative to establish whether this particle really is the Higgs boson of the standard model. The early measurements have not yet pinpointed any of the Higgs couplings to fermions, the Yukawa couplings of the standard model. In this paper we study the values of the top-quark-Higgs coupling, $g_{ht\bar{t}}$, that are still allowed by the one-loop couplings of the Higgs to two gluons or two photons. We first assume that both the gluon fusion production of the Higgs and its decay into two photons proceed through loops with standard model particles only, albeit with an arbitrary top-Higgs coupling. We find that the current Higgs data still allows for 20% deviations in $g_{ht\bar{t}}$ from its standard model value. We then investigate the effect of new particles contributing to the effective one-loop couplings. Specifically we consider a color octet electroweak doublet extension of the scalar sector and find that in this case $g_{ht\bar{t}}$ is allowed to deviate by 40% from its standard model value by the current data.

Unitarity and vacuum stability constraints on the couplings of color octet scalars

The recent discovery of a 126 GeV boson at the LHC will be followed by a detailed examination of its couplings in order to determine whether this particle is the Higgs boson of the standard model or one of many particles of an extended scalar sector. One such extension with a rich phenomenology consists of a color octet electroweak doublet scalar. The most general renormalizable scalar potential contains twelve new parameters and it is therefore desirable to constrain them. We present theoretical constraints on these parameters obtained by requiring perturbative unitarity for two-to-two scalar scattering amplitudes at high energy and vacuum stability.

Lepton number violation and $h\to γγ$ in a radiative inverse seesaw dark matter model

We study phenomenological implications of a radiative inverse seesaw dark matter model. In this model, because neutrino masses are generated at two loop level with inverse seesaw, the new physics mass scale can be as low as a few hundred GeV and the model also naturally contain dark matter candidate. The Yukawa couplings linking the SM leptons and new particles can be large. This can lead to large lepton flavor violating effects. We find that future experimental data on $μ\to e γ$ and $μ- e$ conversion can further test the model. The new charged particles can affect significantly the $h \to γγ$ branching ratio in the SM. The model is able to explain the deviation between the SM prediction and the LHC data. We also study some LHC signatures of the new particles in the model.

Further Studies of Higgs Properties at An ILC $γγ$ Collider

Recently the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC have found a Higgs like boson $h$ with a mass around 125 GeV from several decay modes. The decay mode $h \to γγ$ is one of the most important modes in studying whether $h$ is actually the standard model (SM) Higgs boson. Current data indicate that $h\to γγ$ has a branching ratio larger than the SM prediction for $h$ being identified as the SM Higgs boson. To decide whether the $h$ discovered at the LHC is the SM Higgs boson, more data are needed. We study how $γγ$ collider can help to provide some of the most important information about the Higgs boson properties. We show that a $γγ$ collider can easily verify whether the enhanced $h \to γγ$ observed at the LHC hold. Different models can be tested by studying Higgs boson decay to $γZ$. Studying angular distribution of the $γγ$ through on-shell production of $h$ and its subsequent decays into a $γγ$ pair can decide whether the Higgs like boson $h$ at the LHC is a spin-0 or a spin-2 boson.

The $β$ angle as the CP violating phase in the CKM matrix

The CKM matrix describing quark mixing with three generations can be parameterized by three Euler mixing angles and one CP violating phase. In most of the parameterizations, the CP violating phase chosen is not a directly measurable quantity and is parametrization dependent. In this work, we propose to use the most accurately measured CP violating angle $β$ in the unitarity triangleas the phase in the CKM matrix, and construct an explicit $β$ parameterization. We also derive an approximate Wolfenstein-like expression for this parameterization.

An A4 x Z4 model for neutrino mixing

The A4 x U(1) flavor model of He, Keum, and Volkas is extended to provide a minimal modification to tribimaximal mixing that accommodates a nonzero reactor angle theta13 ~ 0.1. The sequestering problem is circumvented by forbidding superheavy scales and large coupling constants which would otherwise generate sizable RG flows. The model is compatible with (but does not require) a stable or metastable dark matter candidate in the form of a complex scalar field with unit charge under a discrete subgroup Z4 of the U(1) flavor symmetry.
