How Good are LLMs at Relation Extraction under Low-Resource Scenario? Comprehensive Evaluation

Relation Extraction (RE) serves as a crucial technology for transforming unstructured text into structured information, especially within the framework of Knowledge Graph development. Its importance is emphasized by its essential role in various downstream tasks. Besides the conventional RE methods which are based on neural networks and pre-trained language models, large language models (LLMs) are also utilized in the research field of RE. However, on low-resource languages (LRLs), both conventional RE methods and LLM-based methods perform poorly on RE due to the data scarcity issues. To this end, this paper constructs low-resource relation extraction datasets in 10 LRLs in three regions (Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Middle East). The corpora are constructed by translating the original publicly available English RE datasets (NYT10, FewRel and CrossRE) using an effective multilingual machine translation. Then, we use the language perplexity (PPL) to filter out the low-quality data from the translated datasets. Finally, we conduct an empirical study and validate the performance of several open-source LLMs on these generated LRL RE datasets.

Vehicle Selection for C-V2X Mode 4 Based Federated Edge Learning Systems

Federated learning (FL) is a promising technology for vehicular networks to protect vehicles' privacy in Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Vehicles with limited computation capacity may face a large computational burden associated with FL. Federated edge learning (FEEL) systems are introduced to solve such a problem. In FEEL systems, vehicles adopt the cellular-vehicle to everything (C-V2X) mode 4 to upload encrypted data to road side units' (RSUs)' cache queue. Then RSUs train the data transmitted by vehicles, update the locally model hyperparameters and send back results to vehicles, thus vehicles' computational burden can be released. However, each RSU has limited cache queue. To maintain the stability of cache queue and maximize the accuracy of model, it is essential to select appropriate vehicles to upload data. The vehicle selection method for FEEL systems faces challenges due to the random departure of data from the cache queue caused by the stochastic channel and the different system status of vehicles, such as remaining data amount, transmission delay, packet collision probability and survival ability. This paper proposes a vehicle selection method for FEEL systems that aims to maximize the accuracy of model while keeping the cache queue stable. Extensive simulation experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms other baseline selection methods.

High stable and accurate vehicle selection scheme based on federated edge learning in vehicular networks

Federated edge learning (FEEL) technology for vehicular networks is considered as a promising technology to reduce the computation workload while keeping the privacy of users. In the FEEL system, vehicles upload data to the edge servers, which train the vehicles' data to update local models and then return the result to vehicles to avoid sharing the original data. However, the cache queue in the edge is limited and the channel between edge server and each vehicle is time-varying. Thus, it is challenging to select a suitable number of vehicles to ensure that the uploaded data can keep a stable cache queue in edge server while maximizing the learning accuracy. Moreover, selecting vehicles with different resource statuses to update data will affect the total amount of data involved in training, which further affects the model accuracy. In this paper, we propose a vehicle selection scheme, which maximizes the learning accuracy while ensuring the stability of the cache queue, where the statuses of all the vehicles in the coverage of edge server are taken into account. The performance of this scheme is evaluated through simulation experiments, which indicates that our proposed scheme can perform better than the known benchmark scheme.

An Efficient Training Approach for Very Large Scale Face Recognition

Face recognition has achieved significant progress in deep learning era due to the ultra-large-scale and welllabeled datasets. However, training on the outsize datasets is time-consuming and takes up a lot of hardware resource. Therefore, designing an efficient training approach is indispensable. The heavy computational and memory costs mainly result from the million-level dimensionality of thefully connected (FC) layer. To this end, we propose a novel training approach, termed Faster Face Classification (F2C), to alleviate time and cost without sacrificing the performance. This method adopts Dynamic Class Pool (DCP) for storing and updating the identities features dynamically, which could be regarded as a substitute for the FC layer. DCP is efficiently time-saving and cost-saving, as its smaller size with the independence from the whole face identities together. We further validate the proposed F2C method across several face benchmarks and private datasets, and display comparable results, meanwhile the speed is faster than state-of-the-art FC-based methods in terms of recognition accuracy and hardware costs. Moreover, our method is further improved by a well-designed dual data loader including indentity-based and instancebased loaders, which makes it more efficient for the updating DCP parameters.

PoseFace: Pose-Invariant Features and Pose-Adaptive Loss for Face Recognition

Despite the great success achieved by deep learning methods in face recognition, severe performance drops are observed for large pose variations in unconstrained environments (e.g., in cases of surveillance and photo-tagging). To address it, current methods either deploy pose-specific models or frontalize faces by additional modules. Still, they ignore the fact that identity information should be consistent across poses and are not realizing the data imbalance between frontal and profile face images during training. In this paper, we propose an efficient PoseFace framework which utilizes the facial landmarks to disentangle the pose-invariant features and exploits a pose-adaptive loss to handle the imbalance issue adaptively. Extensive experimental results on the benchmarks of Multi-PIE, CFP, CPLFW and IJB have demonstrated the superiority of our method over the state-of-the-arts.

Proximity Effect of Epitaxial Iron Phthalocyanine Molecules on High-Quality Graphene Devices

Depositing magnetic insulators on graphene has been a promising route to introduce magnetism via exchange proximity interaction in graphene for future spintronics applications. Molecule-based magnets may offer unique opportunities because of their synthesis versatility. Here, we investigated the magnetic proximity effect of epitaxial iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules on high-quality monolayer and bilayer graphene devices on hexagonal boron nitride substrate by probing the local and non-local transport. Although the FePc molecules introduce large hole doping effects combined with mobility degradation, the magnetic proximity gives rise to a canted antiferromagnetic state under a magnetic field in the monolayer graphene. On bilayer graphene and FePc heterostructure devices, the non-local transport reveals a pronounced Zeeman spin-Hall effect. Further analysis of the scattering mechanism in the bilayer shows a dominated long-range scattering. Our findings in graphene/organic magnetic insulator heterostructure provide a new insight for the use of molecule-based magnets in two-dimensional spintronic devices.

Large Scale Product Graph Construction for Recommendation in E-commerce

Building a recommendation system that serves billions of users on daily basis is a challenging problem, as the system needs to make astronomical number of predictions per second based on real-time user behaviors with O(1) time complexity. Such kind of large scale recommendation systems usually rely heavily on pre-built index of products to speedup the recommendation service so that online user waiting time is un-noticeable. One important indexing structure is the product-product index, where one can retrieval a list of ranked products given a seed product. The index can be viewed as a weighted product-product graph. In this paper, we present our novel technologies to efficiently build such kind of indexed product graphs. In particular, we propose the Swing algorithm to capture the substitute relationships between products, which can utilize the substructures of user-item click bi-partitive graph. Then we propose the Surprise algorithm for the modeling of complementary product relationships, which utilizes product category information and solves the sparsity problem of user co-purchasing graph via clustering technique. Base on these two approaches, we can build the basis product graph for recommendation in Taobao. The approaches are evaluated comprehensively with both offline and online experiments, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the work.

Weakly Supervised Construction of ASR Systems with Massive Video Data

Building Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems from scratch is significantly challenging, mostly due to the time-consuming and financially-expensive process of annotating a large amount of audio data with transcripts. Although several unsupervised pre-training models have been proposed, applying such models directly might still be sub-optimal if more labeled, training data could be obtained without a large cost. In this paper, we present a weakly supervised framework for constructing ASR systems with massive video data. As videos often contain human-speech audios aligned with subtitles, we consider videos as an important knowledge source, and propose an effective approach to extract high-quality audios aligned with transcripts from videos based on Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The underlying ASR model can be fine-tuned to fit any domain-specific target training datasets after weakly supervised pre-training. Extensive experiments show that our framework can easily produce state-of-the-art results on six public datasets for Mandarin speech recognition.

Loss Function Search for Face Recognition

In face recognition, designing margin-based (e.g., angular, additive, additive angular margins) softmax loss functions plays an important role in learning discriminative features. However, these hand-crafted heuristic methods are sub-optimal because they require much effort to explore the large design space. Recently, an AutoML for loss function search method AM-LFS has been derived, which leverages reinforcement learning to search loss functions during the training process. But its search space is complex and unstable that hindering its superiority. In this paper, we first analyze that the key to enhance the feature discrimination is actually \textbf{how to reduce the softmax probability}. We then design a unified formulation for the current margin-based softmax losses. Accordingly, we define a novel search space and develop a reward-guided search method to automatically obtain the best candidate. Experimental results on a variety of face recognition benchmarks have demonstrated the effectiveness of our method over the state-of-the-art alternatives.

Mis-classified Vector Guided Softmax Loss for Face Recognition

Face recognition has witnessed significant progress due to the advances of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the central task of which is how to improve the feature discrimination. To this end, several margin-based (\textit{e.g.}, angular, additive and additive angular margins) softmax loss functions have been proposed to increase the feature margin between different classes. However, despite great achievements have been made, they mainly suffer from three issues: 1) Obviously, they ignore the importance of informative features mining for discriminative learning; 2) They encourage the feature margin only from the ground truth class, without realizing the discriminability from other non-ground truth classes; 3) The feature margin between different classes is set to be same and fixed, which may not adapt the situations very well. To cope with these issues, this paper develops a novel loss function, which adaptively emphasizes the mis-classified feature vectors to guide the discriminative feature learning. Thus we can address all the above issues and achieve more discriminative face features. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to inherit the advantages of feature margin and feature mining into a unified loss function. Experimental results on several benchmarks have demonstrated the effectiveness of our method over state-of-the-art alternatives.

Grand Challenge of 106-Point Facial Landmark Localization

Facial landmark localization is a very crucial step in numerous face related applications, such as face recognition, facial pose estimation, face image synthesis, etc. However, previous competitions on facial landmark localization (i.e., the 300-W, 300-VW and Menpo challenges) aim to predict 68-point landmarks, which are incompetent to depict the structure of facial components. In order to overcome this problem, we construct a challenging dataset, named JD-landmark. Each image is manually annotated with 106-point landmarks. This dataset covers large variations on pose and expression, which brings a lot of difficulties to predict accurate landmarks. We hold a 106-point facial landmark localization competition1 on this dataset in conjunction with IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) 2019. The purpose of this competition is to discover effective and robust facial landmark localization approaches.

A High-Efficiency Framework for Constructing Large-Scale Face Parsing Benchmark

Face parsing, which is to assign a semantic label to each pixel in face images, has recently attracted increasing interest due to its huge application potentials. Although many face related fields (e.g., face recognition and face detection) have been well studied for many years, the existing datasets for face parsing are still severely limited in terms of the scale and quality, e.g., the widely used Helen dataset only contains 2,330 images. This is mainly because pixel-level annotation is a high cost and time-consuming work, especially for the facial parts without clear boundaries. The lack of accurate annotated datasets becomes a major obstacle in the progress of face parsing task. It is a feasible way to utilize dense facial landmarks to guide the parsing annotation. However, annotating dense landmarks on human face encounters the same issues as the parsing annotation. To overcome the above problems, in this paper, we develop a high-efficiency framework for face parsing annotation, which considerably simplifies and speeds up the parsing annotation by two consecutive modules. Benefit from the proposed framework, we construct a new Dense Landmark Guided Face Parsing (LaPa) benchmark. It consists of 22,000 face images with large variations in expression, pose, occlusion, etc. Each image is provided with accurate annotation of a 11-category pixel-level label map along with coordinates of 106-point landmarks. To the best of our knowledge, it is currently the largest public dataset for face parsing. To make full use of our LaPa dataset with abundant face shape and boundary priors, we propose a simple yet effective Boundary-Sensitive Parsing Network (BSPNet). Our network is taken as a baseline model on the proposed LaPa dataset, and meanwhile, it achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the Helen dataset without resorting to extra face alignment.

ScratchDet: Training Single-Shot Object Detectors from Scratch

Current state-of-the-art object objectors are fine-tuned from the off-the-shelf networks pretrained on large-scale classification dataset ImageNet, which incurs some additional problems: 1) The classification and detection have different degrees of sensitivity to translation, resulting in the learning objective bias; 2) The architecture is limited by the classification network, leading to the inconvenience of modification. To cope with these problems, training detectors from scratch is a feasible solution. However, the detectors trained from scratch generally perform worse than the pretrained ones, even suffer from the convergence issue in training. In this paper, we explore to train object detectors from scratch robustly. By analysing the previous work on optimization landscape, we find that one of the overlooked points in current trained-from-scratch detector is the BatchNorm. Resorting to the stable and predictable gradient brought by BatchNorm, detectors can be trained from scratch stably while keeping the favourable performance independent to the network architecture. Taking this advantage, we are able to explore various types of networks for object detection, without suffering from the poor convergence. By extensive experiments and analyses on downsampling factor, we propose the Root-ResNet backbone network, which makes full use of the information from original images. Our ScratchDet achieves the state-of-the-art accuracy on PASCAL VOC 2007, 2012 and MS COCO among all the train-from-scratch detectors and even performs better than several one-stage pretrained methods. Codes will be made publicly available at https://github.com/KimSoybean/ScratchDet.

Prediction-Tracking-Segmentation

We introduce a prediction driven method for visual tracking and segmentation in videos. Instead of solely relying on matching with appearance cues for tracking, we build a predictive model which guides finding more accurate tracking regions efficiently. With the proposed prediction mechanism, we improve the model robustness against distractions and occlusions during tracking. We demonstrate significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods not only on visual tracking tasks (VOT 2016 and VOT 2018) but also on video segmentation datasets (DAVIS 2016 and DAVIS 2017).

A Dataset and Benchmark for Large-scale Multi-modal Face Anti-spoofing

Face anti-spoofing is essential to prevent face recognition systems from a security breach. Much of the progresses have been made by the availability of face anti-spoofing benchmark datasets in recent years. However, existing face anti-spoofing benchmarks have limited number of subjects ($\le\negmedspace170$) and modalities ($\leq\negmedspace2$), which hinder the further development of the academic community. To facilitate face anti-spoofing research, we introduce a large-scale multi-modal dataset, namely CASIA-SURF, which is the largest publicly available dataset for face anti-spoofing in terms of both subjects and visual modalities. Specifically, it consists of $1,000$ subjects with $21,000$ videos and each sample has $3$ modalities (i.e., RGB, Depth and IR). We also provide a measurement set, evaluation protocol and training/validation/testing subsets, developing a new benchmark for face anti-spoofing. Moreover, we present a new multi-modal fusion method as baseline, which performs feature re-weighting to select the more informative channel features while suppressing the less useful ones for each modal. Extensive experiments have been conducted on the proposed dataset to verify its significance and generalization capability. Improved Selective Refinement Network for Face Detection

As a long-standing problem in computer vision, face detection has attracted much attention in recent decades for its practical applications. With the availability of face detection benchmark WIDER FACE dataset, much of the progresses have been made by various algorithms in recent years. Among them, the Selective Refinement Network (SRN) face detector introduces the two-step classification and regression operations selectively into an anchor-based face detector to reduce false positives and improve location accuracy simultaneously. Moreover, it designs a receptive field enhancement block to provide more diverse receptive field. In this report, to further improve the performance of SRN, we exploit some existing techniques via extensive experiments, including new data augmentation strategy, improved backbone network, MS COCO pretraining, decoupled classification module, segmentation branch and Squeeze-and-Excitation block. Some of these techniques bring performance improvements, while few of them do not well adapt to our baseline. As a consequence, we present an improved SRN face detector by combining these useful techniques together and obtain the best performance on widely used face detection benchmark WIDER FACE dataset.

Adjustment of electric field intensity by dielectric metamolecule hybridization model

In this paper, we report on achieving hybridization effect in a Mie-based dielectric metamolecule and provide their physically intuitive picture. The hybridization results in the splitting of the initial overlapping resonance dips, thus leading to two new collective resonance modes. It can be observed via the displacement electric field distribution that the two modes behave as the in-phase and out-of-phase oscillation of two meta-atoms, thus enhancing and diminishing the intensity of electric field at the gap between two meta-atoms. Moreover, since the two hybridized modes are caused by the interaction effect, the enhancement amplitude can be adjusted by several coupling factors, like gap distances and spot positions. Taking advantage of the two collective modes of the dielectric metamolecule, certain locations in the metamolecule can be applied as heating zones in microwave band and signal amplifier or shielding zones in communication fields.
