Support Vector Guided Softmax Loss for Face Recognition

Face recognition has witnessed significant progresses due to the advances of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the central challenge of which, is feature discrimination. To address it, one group tries to exploit mining-based strategies (\textit{e.g.}, hard example mining and focal loss) to focus on the informative examples. The other group devotes to designing margin-based loss functions (\textit{e.g.}, angular, additive and additive angular margins) to increase the feature margin from the perspective of ground truth class. Both of them have been well-verified to learn discriminative features. However, they suffer from either the ambiguity of hard examples or the lack of discriminative power of other classes. In this paper, we design a novel loss function, namely support vector guided softmax loss (SV-Softmax), which adaptively emphasizes the mis-classified points (support vectors) to guide the discriminative features learning. So the developed SV-Softmax loss is able to eliminate the ambiguity of hard examples as well as absorb the discriminative power of other classes, and thus results in more discrimiantive features. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to inherit the advantages of mining-based and margin-based losses into one framework. Experimental results on several benchmarks have demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach over state-of-the-arts.

FaceBoxes: A CPU Real-time Face Detector with High Accuracy

Although tremendous strides have been made in face detection, one of the remaining open challenges is to achieve real-time speed on the CPU as well as maintain high performance, since effective models for face detection tend to be computationally prohibitive. To address this challenge, we propose a novel face detector, named FaceBoxes, with superior performance on both speed and accuracy. Specifically, our method has a lightweight yet powerful network structure that consists of the Rapidly Digested Convolutional Layers (RDCL) and the Multiple Scale Convolutional Layers (MSCL). The RDCL is designed to enable FaceBoxes to achieve real-time speed on the CPU. The MSCL aims at enriching the receptive fields and discretizing anchors over different layers to handle faces of various scales. Besides, we propose a new anchor densification strategy to make different types of anchors have the same density on the image, which significantly improves the recall rate of small faces. As a consequence, the proposed detector runs at 20 FPS on a single CPU core and 125 FPS using a GPU for VGA-resolution images. Moreover, the speed of FaceBoxes is invariant to the number of faces. We comprehensively evaluate this method and present state-of-the-art detection performance on several face detection benchmark datasets, including the AFW, PASCAL face, and FDDB. Multi-Source Pointer Network for Product Title Summarization

In this paper, we study the product title summarization problem in E-commerce applications for display on mobile devices. Comparing with conventional sentence summarization, product title summarization has some extra and essential constraints. For example, factual errors or loss of the key information are intolerable for E-commerce applications. Therefore, we abstract two more constraints for product title summarization: (i) do not introduce irrelevant information; (ii) retain the key information (e.g., brand name and commodity name). To address these issues, we propose a novel multi-source pointer network by adding a new knowledge encoder for pointer network. The first constraint is handled by pointer mechanism. For the second constraint, we restore the key information by copying words from the knowledge encoder with the help of the soft gating mechanism. For evaluation, we build a large collection of real-world product titles along with human-written short titles. Experimental results demonstrate that our model significantly outperforms the other baselines. Finally, online deployment of our proposed model has yielded a significant business impact, as measured by the click-through rate.

Ensemble Soft-Margin Softmax Loss for Image Classification

Softmax loss is arguably one of the most popular losses to train CNN models for image classification. However, recent works have exposed its limitation on feature discriminability. This paper casts a new viewpoint on the weakness of softmax loss. On the one hand, the CNN features learned using the softmax loss are often inadequately discriminative. We hence introduce a soft-margin softmax function to explicitly encourage the discrimination between different classes. On the other hand, the learned classifier of softmax loss is weak. We propose to assemble multiple these weak classifiers to a strong one, inspired by the recognition that the diversity among weak classifiers is critical to a good ensemble. To achieve the diversity, we adopt the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC). Considering these two aspects in one framework, we design a novel loss, named as Ensemble soft-Margin Softmax (EM-Softmax). Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets are conducted to show the superiority of our design over the baseline softmax loss and several state-of-the-art alternatives.

S$^3$FD: Single Shot Scale-invariant Face Detector

This paper presents a real-time face detector, named Single Shot Scale-invariant Face Detector (S$^3$FD), which performs superiorly on various scales of faces with a single deep neural network, especially for small faces. Specifically, we try to solve the common problem that anchor-based detectors deteriorate dramatically as the objects become smaller. We make contributions in the following three aspects: 1) proposing a scale-equitable face detection framework to handle different scales of faces well. We tile anchors on a wide range of layers to ensure that all scales of faces have enough features for detection. Besides, we design anchor scales based on the effective receptive field and a proposed equal proportion interval principle; 2) improving the recall rate of small faces by a scale compensation anchor matching strategy; 3) reducing the false positive rate of small faces via a max-out background label. As a consequence, our method achieves state-of-the-art detection performance on all the common face detection benchmarks, including the AFW, PASCAL face, FDDB and WIDER FACE datasets, and can run at 36 FPS on a Nvidia Titan X (Pascal) for VGA-resolution images.

Deep Person Re-Identification with Improved Embedding and Efficient Training

Person re-identification task has been greatly boosted by deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in recent years. The core of which is to enlarge the inter-class distinction as well as reduce the intra-class variance. However, to achieve this, existing deep models prefer to adopt image pairs or triplets to form verification loss, which is inefficient and unstable since the number of training pairs or triplets grows rapidly as the number of training data grows. Moreover, their performance is limited since they ignore the fact that different dimension of embedding may play different importance. In this paper, we propose to employ identification loss with center loss to train a deep model for person re-identification. The training process is efficient since it does not require image pairs or triplets for training while the inter-class distinction and intra-class variance are well handled. To boost the performance, a new feature reweighting (FRW) layer is designed to explicitly emphasize the importance of each embedding dimension, thus leading to an improved embedding. Experiments on several benchmark datasets have shown the superiority of our method over the state-of-the-art alternatives on both accuracy and speed.

Fano Resonance in a Subwavelength Mie-based Metamolecule with Split Ring Resonator

In this letter, we report a method of symmetry-breaking in an artificial Mie-based metamolecule. A Fano resonance with a Q factor of 96 is observed at microwave frequencies in a structure combining a split ring resonator (SRR) and a high-permittivity dielectric cube. Calculations indicate resonant frequency tunability will result from altering the cube's permittivity. The asymmetric spectrum is attributed to both constructive and destructive near-field interactions between the two distinct resonators. Experimental data and simulation results are in good agreement. The underlying physics is seen in field distribution and dipole analysis. This work substantiates an approach for the manipulation of Mie resonances which can potentially be utilized in light modulating and sensing.

Single-molecule interfacial electron transfer dynamics manipulated by external electric current

Interfacial electron transfer (IET) dynamics in 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3, 3, 3', 3'-tetramethylindodicarbocyanine (DiD) dye molecules / indium tin oxide (ITO) film system have been probed at the ensemble and single-molecule level by recording the change of fluorescence emission intensity. By comparing the difference of the external electric current (EEC) dependence of lifetime and intensity for enambles and single molecules, it is shown that the single-molecule probe can effcienly demonstrate the IET dynamics. The backward electron transfer and electron transfer of ground state induce the single molecules fluorescence quenching when an EEC is applied to ITO film.
