ADMM Enabled Hybrid Precoding in Wideband Distributed Phased Arrays Based MIMO Systems

Distributed phased arrays based multiple-input multiple-output (DPA-MIMO) is a recently proposed highly reconfigurable architecture enabling both spatial multiplexing and beamforming in millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems. In this work, we focus on coping with the hybrid precoding for the wideband DPA-MIMO system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. More specifically, we propose an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) enabled hybrid precoding approach based on an alternating optimization framework, abbreviated to ADMM-AltMin, for such cooperative array-of-subarrays structures. Simulation results show that the proposed ADMM-AltMin method achieves favourable performance with practical quantization of phase shifters taken into account.

Omni SCADA Intrusion Detection Using Deep Learning Algorithms

We investigate deep learning based omni intrusion detection system (IDS) for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) networks that are capable of detecting both temporally uncorrelated and correlated attacks. Regarding the IDSs developed in this paper, a feedforward neural network (FNN) can detect temporally uncorrelated attacks at an {F$_{1}$} of {99.967${\pm}$0.005\%} but correlated attacks as low as {58${\pm}$2\%}. In contrast, long-short term memory (LSTM) detects correlated attacks at {99.56${\pm}$0.01\%} while uncorrelated attacks at {99.3${\pm}$0.1\%}. Combining LSTM and FNN through an ensemble approach further improves the IDS performance with {F$_{1}$} of {99.68${\pm}$0.04\%} regardless the temporal correlations among the data packets.

A Framework on Hybrid MIMO Transceiver Design based on Matrix-Monotonic Optimization

Hybrid transceiver can strike a balance between complexity and performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this paper, we develop a unified framework on hybrid MIMO transceiver design using matrix-monotonic optimization. The proposed framework addresses general hybrid transceiver design, rather than just limiting to certain high frequency bands, such as millimeter wave (mmWave) or terahertz bands or relying on the sparsity of some specific wireless channels. In the proposed framework, analog and digital parts of a transceiver, either linear or nonlinear, are jointly optimized. Based on matrix-monotonic optimization, we demonstrate that the combination of the optimal analog precoders and processors are equivalent to eigenchannel selection for various optimal hybrid MIMO transceivers. From the optimal structure, several effective algorithms are derived to compute the analog transceivers under unit modulus constraints. Furthermore, in order to reduce computation complexity, a simple random algorithm is introduced for analog transceiver optimization. Once the analog part of a transceiver is determined, the closed-form digital part can be obtained. Numerical results verify the advantages of the proposed design.

Hybrid Precoding Architecture for Massive Multiuser MIMO with Dissipation: Sub-Connected or Fully-Connected Structures?

In this paper, we study the hybrid precoding structures over limited feedback channels for massive multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We focus on the system performance of hybrid precoding under a more realistic hardware network model, particularly, with inevitable dissipation. The effect of quantized analog and digital precoding is characterized. We investigate the spectral efficiencies of two typical hybrid precoding structures, i.e., the sub-connected structure and the fully-connected structure. It is revealed that increasing signal power can compensate the performance loss incurred by quantized analog precoding. In addition, by capturing the nature of the effective channels for hybrid processing, we employ a channel correlation-based codebook and demonstrate that the codebook shows a great advantage over the conventional random vector quantization (RVQ) codebook. It is also discovered that, if the channel correlation-based codebook is utilized, the sub-connected structure always outperforms the fully-connected structure in either massive MIMO or low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios; otherwise, the fully-connected structrue achieves better performance. Simulation results under both Rayleigh fading channels and millimeter wave (mmWave) channels verify the conclusions above.

Design and Analysis of Passband Transmitted Reference Pulse Cluster UWB Systems in the Presence of Phase Noise

Transmitted reference pulse cluster (TRPC) signaling was recently proposed and developed for noncoherent ultra-wideband (UWB) communications. In this paper, a practical passband TRPC-UWB system is designed and analyzed to deal with the carrier frequency offset, phase offset and phase noise inherent in voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) of the transmitter and the receiver. Based on a general model of noisy VCO and employing some reasonable assumptions, an equivalent linear time-invariant (LTI) analytical model is obtained to facilitate the bit error rate (BER) analysis. Our analysis shows that the constant carrier frequency offset and the phase offset can be removed by employing the passband transmitter and the noncoherent receiver. Furthermore, a semi-analytical BER expression is derived to show the impact of phase noise on the system error performance. Simulation results validate the semi-analytical expressions and both of them indicate that TRPC is more robust to the effect of phase noise than conventional transmitted reference (TR) and coherent UWB Rake receivers.

Optimal Energy Management Strategies in Wireless Data and Energy Cooperative Communications

This paper presents a new cooperative wireless communication network strategy that incorporates energy cooperation and data cooperation. The model establishment, design goal formulations, and algorithms for throughput maximization of the proposed protocol are presented and illustrated using a three-node network with two energy harvesting (EH) user nodes and a destination node. Transmission models are established from the performance analysis for a total of four scenarios. Based on the models, we seek to find optimal energy management strategies by jointly optimizing time allocation for each user, power allocations over these time intervals, and data throughputs at user nodes so as to maximize the sum-throughput or, alternatively, the minimum throughput of the two users in all scenarios. An accelerated Newton barrier algorithm and an alternative algorithm based on local quadratic approximation of the transmission models are developed to solve the aforementioned optimization problems. Numerical experiments under practical settings provide supportive observations to our performance analysis.

Framework of Channel Estimation for Hybrid Analog-and-Digital Processing Enabled Massive MIMO Communications

We investigate a general channel estimation problem in the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system which employs the hybrid analog/digital precoding structure with limited radio-frequency (RF) chains. By properly designing RF combiners and performing multiple trainings, the proposed channel estimation can approach the performance of fully-digital estimations depending on the degree of channel spatial correlation and the number of RF chains. Dealing with the hybrid channel estimation, the optimal combiner is theoretically derived by relaxing the constant-magnitude constraint in a specific single-training scenario, which is then extended to the design of combiners for multiple trainings by Sequential and Alternating methods. Further, we develop a technique to generate the phase-only RF combiners based on the corresponding unconstrained ones to satisfy the constant-magnitude constraints. The performance of the proposed hybrid channel estimation scheme is examined by simulations under both nonparametric and spatial channel models. The simulation results demonstrate that the estimated CSI can approach the performance of fully-digital estimations in terms of both mean square error and spectral efficiency. Moreover, a practical spatial channel covariance estimation method is proposed and its effectiveness in hybrid channel estimation is verified by simulations.

5G Cellular User Equipment: From Theory to Practical Hardware Design

Research and development on the next generation wireless systems, namely 5G, has experienced explosive growth in recent years. In the physical layer (PHY), the massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technique and the use of high GHz frequency bands are two promising trends for adoption. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands such as 28 GHz, 38 GHz, 64 GHz, and 71 GHz, which were previously considered not suitable for commercial cellular networks, will play an important role in 5G. Currently, most 5G research deals with the algorithms and implementations of modulation and coding schemes, new spatial signal processing technologies, new spectrum opportunities, channel modeling, 5G proof of concept (PoC) systems, and other system-level enabling technologies. In this paper, we first investigate the contemporary wireless user equipment (UE) hardware design, and unveil the critical 5G UE hardware design constraints on circuits and systems. On top of the said investigation and design trade-off analysis, a new, highly reconfigurable system architecture for 5G cellular user equipment, namely distributed phased arrays based MIMO (DPA-MIMO) is proposed. Finally, the link budget calculation and data throughput numerical results are presented for the evaluation of the proposed architecture.

Spectral and Energy Efficiency of Multi-pair Massive MIMO Relay Network with Hybrid Processing

We consider a multi-pair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network, where the relay is equipped with a large number, N, of antennas, but driven by a far smaller number, L, of radio frequency (RF) chains. We assume that K pairs of users are scheduled for simultaneous transmission, where K satisfies 2K = L. A hybrid signal processing scheme is presented for both uplink and downlink transmissions of the network. Analytical expressions of both spectral and energy efficiency are derived with respect to the RF chain number under imperfect channel estimation. It is revealed that, under the condition N > 4L^2/pi, the transmit power of each user and the relay can be respectively scaled down by 1=sqrt(N) and 2K=sqrt(N) if pilot power scales with signal power, or they can be respectively scaled down by 1=N and 2K=N if the pilot power is kept fixed, while maintaining an asymptotically unchanged spectral efficiency (SE). While regarding energy efficiency (EE) of the network, the optimal EE is shown to be achieved when Pr = 2KPs, where Pr and Ps respectively refer to the transmit power of the relay and each source terminal. We show that the network EE is a quasi-concave function with respect to the number of RF-chains which, therefore, admits a unique globally optimal choice of the RF-chain number. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify our observations.

Hierarchical Online Intrusion Detection for SCADA Networks

We propose a novel hierarchical online intrusion detection system (HOIDS) for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) networks based on machine learning algorithms. By utilizing the server-client topology while keeping clients distributed for global protection, high detection rate is achieved with minimum network impact. We implement accurate models of normal-abnormal binary detection and multi-attack identification based on logistic regression and quasi-Newton optimization algorithm using the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno approach. The detection system is capable of accelerating detection by information gain based feature selection or principle component analysis based dimension reduction. By evaluating our system using the KDD99 dataset and the industrial control system dataset, we demonstrate that HOIDS is highly scalable, efficient and cost effective for securing SCADA infrastructures.

Downlink Performance of Pilot-Reused HetNet with Large-Scale Antenna Arrays

Considering a heterogeneous network (HetNet) where both macro base station (BS) and small cell (SC) nodes are equipped with massive antennas, this paper studies the performance for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlinks when the macro and small cells share the same spectrum and hence interfere with each other. Suppose that the large-scale antenna arrays at both macro BS and SC nodes employ maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) or zero-forcing transmission (ZFT) precoding, and transmit data streams to the served users simultaneously. A new pilot reuse pattern among SCs is proposed for channel estimation. Taking into account imperfect channel state information (CSI), capacity lower bounds for MRT and ZFT are derived, respectively, in closed-form expressions involving only statistical CSI. Then asymptotic analyses for massive arrays are presented under specific power scaling laws. Subsequently, two user scheduling algorithms, greedy scheduling algorithm and asymptotical scheduling algorithm (ASA), are proposed based on derived capacity lower bounds and asymptotic analyses, respectively. ASA is demonstrated to be a near optimal in the asymptotic regime and has low complexity. Finally, the derived closed-form expressions are verified to be accurate predictors of the system performance by Monte-Carlo simulations. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of asymptotic analysis and proposed user scheduling schemes.

MSE-based Precoding for MIMO Downlinks in Heterogeneous Networks

Considering a heterogeneous network (HetNet) system consisting of a macro tier overlaid with a second tier of small cells (SCs), this paper studies the mean square error (MSE) based precoding design to be employed by the macro base station and the SC nodes for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlinks. First, a new sum-MSE of all users based minimization problem is proposed aiming to design a set of macro cell (MC) and SC transmit precoding matrices or vectors. To solve it, two different algorithms are presented. One is via a relaxed-constraints based alternating optimization (RAO) realized by efficient alternating optimization and relaxing non-convex constraints to convex ones. The other is via an unconstrained alternating optimization with normalization (UAON) implemented by introducing the constraints into the iterations with the normalization operation. Second, a separate MSE minimization based precoding is proposed by considering the signal and interference terms corresponding to the macro tier and the SCs separately. Simulation results show that the sum-MSE based RAO algorithm provides the best MSE performance among the proposed schemes under a number of system configurations. When the number of antennas at the macro-BS is sufficiently large, the MSE of the separate MSE-based precoding is found to approach that of RAO and surpass that of UAON. Together, this paper provides a suite of three new precoding techniques that is expected to meet the need in a broad range of HetNet environments with adequate balance between performance and complexity.

Multipair Massive MIMO Relaying with Pilot-Data Transmission Overlay

We propose a pilot-data transmission overlay scheme for multipair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying systems employing either half- or full-duplex (HD or FD) communications at the relay station (RS). In the proposed scheme, pilots are transmitted in partial overlap with data to decrease the channel estimation overhead. The RS can detect the source data with minimal destination pilot interference by exploiting the asymptotic orthogonality of massive MIMO channels. Then pilot-data interference can be effectively suppressed with assistance of the detected source data in the destination channel estimation. Due to the transmission overlay, the effective data period is extended, hence improving system throughput. Both theoretical and simulation results confirm that the proposed pilot-data overlay scheme outperforms the conventional separate pilot-data design in the limited coherence time interval scenario. Moreover, asymptotic analyses at high and low SNR regions demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme regardless of the coherence interval length. Because of simultaneous transmission, the proper allocation of source data transmission and relay data forwarding power can further improve the system performance. Hence a power allocation problem is formulated and a successive convex approximation approach is proposed to solve the non-convex optimization problem with the FD pilot-data transmission overlay.

Power Allocation for Multi-Pair Massive MIMO Two-Way AF Relaying with Linear Processing

In this paper, we consider a multi-pair two-way amplify-and-forward relaying system where multiple sources exchange information via a relay node equipped with large-scale antenna arrays. Given that channel estimation is non-ideal, and that the relay employs either maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) or zero-forcing reception/zero-forcing transmission (ZFR/ZFT) beamforming, we derive two corresponding closed-form lower bound expressions for the ergodic achievable rate of each pair sources. The closed-form expressions enable us to design an optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme that maximizes the sum spectral efficiency under certain practical constraints. As the antenna array size tends to infinity and the signal to noise ratios become very large, asymptotically optimal power allocation schemes in simple closed-form are derived. The capacity lower bounds are verified to be accurate predictors of the system performance by simulations, and the proposed OPA outperforms equal power allocation (EPA). It is also found that in the asymptotic regime, when MRC/MRT is used at the relay and the link end-to-end large-scale fading factors among all pairs are equal, the optimal power allocated to a user is inverse to the large-scale fading factor of the channel from the user to the relay, while OPA approaches EPA when ZFR/ZFT is adopted.
