Relations between quantum metrology and criticality in general su(1, 1) systems

There is a prevalent effort to achieve quantum-enhanced metrology using criticality. However, the extent to which estimation precision is enhanced through criticality still needs further exploration under the constraint of finite time resources. We clarify relations between quantum metrology and criticality through a unitary parametrization process with a Hamiltonian governed by su(1, 1) Lie algebra. We demonstrate that the determination of the generator in the parameterization can be treated as an extended brachistochrone problem. Furthermore, the dynamic quantum Fisher information about the parameter exhibits a power-law dependence on the evolution time as the system approaches its critical point. By investigating the dynamic sensing proposals of three quantum critical systems, we show that the asymptotic behavior of sensitivity is consistent with our predictions. Our theory provides a deep understanding on the interplay of quantum metrology and criticality, providing insights into the underlying connections that involve both quantum phenomena and classical problems.

Line Drawing Guided Progressive Inpainting of Mural Damage

Mural image inpainting is far less explored compared to its natural image counterpart and remains largely unsolved. Most existing image-inpainting methods tend to take the target image as the only input and directly repair the damage to generate a visually plausible result. These methods obtain high performance in restoration or completion of some pre-defined objects, e.g., human face, fabric texture, and printed texts, etc., however, are not suitable for repairing murals with varying subjects and large damaged areas. Moreover, due to discrete colors in paints, mural inpainting may suffer from apparent color bias. To this end, in this paper, we propose a line drawing guided progressive mural inpainting method. It divides the inpainting process into two steps: structure reconstruction and color correction, implemented by a structure reconstruction network (SRN) and a color correction network (CCN), respectively. In structure reconstruction, SRN utilizes the line drawing as an assistant to achieve large-scale content authenticity and structural stability. In color correction, CCN operates a local color adjustment for missing pixels which reduces the negative effects of color bias and edge jumping. The proposed approach is evaluated against the current state-of-the-art image inpainting methods. Qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in mural image inpainting. The codes and data are available at https://github.com/qinnzou/mural-image-inpainting.

Koebe uniformization for infinitely connected attracting Fatou domains

This paper works on the structure of infinitely connected Fatou damains of rational maps in terms of Koebe uniformization. Due to the complicated boundary behavior, the existing uniformization results are failed to apply in general. We proved that if the rational map is geometrically finite, then its infinitely connected attracting Fatou damain is conformally homeomorphic to a circle domain.

HMTRace: Hardware-Assisted Memory-Tagging based Dynamic Data Race Detection

Data race, a category of insidious software concurrency bugs, is often challenging and resource-intensive to detect and debug. Existing dynamic race detection tools incur significant execution time and memory overhead while exhibiting high false positives. This paper proposes HMTRace, a novel Armv8.5-A memory tag extension (MTE) based dynamic data race detection framework, emphasizing low compute and memory requirements while maintaining high accuracy and precision. HMTRace supports race detection in userspace OpenMP- and Pthread-based multi-threaded C applications. HMTRace showcases a combined f1-score of 0.86 while incurring a mean execution time overhead of 4.01% and peak memory (RSS) overhead of 54.31%. HMTRace also does not report false positives, asserting all reported races.

Parametrized protocol achieving the Heisenberg limit in the optical domain via dispersive atom-light interactions

The strong and collective atom-light interactions in cavity-QED systems perform manifold benefits in quantum-enhanced measurements. Here, we study the time-reversal protocol that has been proposed to sense small displacements of the light field, and report the sensitivity of the scheme that could be speeded up to attain the Heisenberg limit (HL).We show the holonomic unitary parametrization process of the scheme and one only need to choose appropriate initial states to pursue the ultimate sensitivity. The scheme may pave an experimentally feasible way to achieve Heisenberg-limited metrology with nonclassical states.

Majorana stellar representation for mixed-spin $(s,\frac{1}{2})$ systems

By describing the evolution of a quantum state with the trajectories of the Majorana stars on a Bloch sphere, Majorana's stellar representation provides an intuitive geometric perspective to comprehend a quantum system with high-dimensional Hilbert space. However, the problem of the representation of a two-spin coupling system on a Bloch sphere has not been solved satisfactorily yet. Here, we present a practical method to resolve the problem for the mixed-spin $(s, 1/2)$ system. The system can be decomposed into two spins: spin-$(s+1/2)$ and spin-$(s-1/2)$ at the coupling bases, which can be regarded as independent spins. Besides, we may write any pure state as a superposition of two orthonormal states with one spin-$(s+1/2)$ state and the other spin-$(s-1/2)$ state. Thus, the whole state can be regarded as a state of a pseudo spin-$1/2$. In this way, the mixed spin decomposes into three spins. Therefore, we can represent the state by $(2s+1)+(2s-1)+1=4s+1$ sets of stars on a Bloch sphere. Finally, to demonstrate our theory, we give some examples that indeed show laconic and symmetric patterns on the Bloch sphere, and unveil the properties of the high-spin system by analyzing the trajectories of the Majorana stars on a Bloch sphere.

Spin squeezing and concurrence under Lee-Yang dephasing channels

The Lee-Yang zeros are one-to-one mapping to zeros in the coherence of a probe spin coupled to a many-body system. Here, we study the spin squeezing under two different types of Lee-Yang dephasing channels in which the partition functions vanish at Lee-Yang zeros. Under the first type of the channels in which probes are coupled to their own bath, we find that the performance of spin squeezing is improved and its maximum only depends on the initial state. Moreover, the centers of all the concurrence vanishing domains are corresponding to the Lee-Yang zeros. Under the second type of the channels in which probes are coupled to one bath together, the performance of spin squeezing is not improved, however, the concurrence shares almost the same properties under both channels. These results provide new experimental possibilities in many-body physics and extend a new perspective of the relationship between the entanglement and spin squeezing in probes-bath systems.

Fundamental Sensitivity Limits for non-Hermitian Quantum Sensors

Considering non-Hermitian systems implemented by utilizing enlarged quantum systems, we determine the fundamental limits for the sensitivity of non-Hermitian sensors from the perspective of quantum information. We prove that non-Hermitian sensors do not outperform their Hermitian counterparts (directly couples to the parameter) in the performance of sensitivity, due to the invariance of the quantum information about the parameter. By scrutinizing two concrete non-Hermitian sensing proposals, which are implemented using full quantum systems, we demonstrate that the sensitivity of these sensors is in agreement with our predictions. Our theory offers a comprehensive and model-independent framework for understanding the fundamental limits of non-Hermitian quantum sensors and builds the bridge over the gap between non-Hermitian physics and quantum metrology.

Lee-Yang zeros and quantum Fisher information matrix in a nonlinear system

The distribution of Lee-Yang zeros not only matters in thermodynamics and quantum mechanics, but also in mathematics. Hereby we propose a nonlinear quantum toy model and discuss the distribution of corresponding Lee-Yang zeros. Utilizing the coupling between a probe qubit and the nonlinear system, all Lee-Yang zeros can be detected in the dynamics of the probe qubit by tuning the coupling strength and linear coefficient of the nonlinear system. Moreover, the analytical expression of the quantum Fisher information matrix at the Lee-Yang zeros is provided, and an interesting phenomenon is discovered. Both the coupling strength and temperature can simultaneously attain their precision limits at the Lee-Yang zeros. However, the probe qubit cannot work as a thermometer at a Lee-Yang zero if it sits on the unit circle.

Quantum dynamic response-based NV-diamond magnetometry: Robustness to decoherence and applications in motion detection of magnetic nanoparticles

We propose a novel quantum sensing protocol that leverages the dynamical response of physical observables to quenches in quantum systems. Specifically, we use the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond to realize both scalar and vector magnetometry via quantum response. Furthermore, we suggest a method for detecting the motion of magnetic nanoparticles, which is challenging with conventional interference-based sensors. To achieve this, we derive the closed exact form of the Berry curvature corresponding to NV centers and design quenching protocols to extract the Berry curvature via dynamical response. By constructing and solving non-linear equations, the magnetic field and instantaneous motion velocity of the magnetic nanoparticle can be deduced. We investigate the feasibility of our sensing scheme in the presence of decoherence and show through numerical simulations that it is robust to decoherence. Intriguingly, we have observed that a vanishing nuclear spin polarization in diamond actually benefits our dynamic sensing scheme, which stands in contrast to conventional Ramsey-based schemes. In comparison to Ramsey-based sensing schemes, our proposed scheme can sense an arbitrary time-dependent magnetic field, as long as its time dependence is nearly adiabatic.

Maximal quantum Fisher information for phase estimation without initial parity

Mach-Zehnder interferometer is a common device in quantum phase estimation and the photon losses in it are an important issue for achieving a high phase accuracy. Here we thoroughly discuss the precision limit of the phase in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a coherent state and a superposition of coherent states as input states. By providing a general analytical expression of quantum Fisher information, the phase-matching condition and optimal initial parity are given. Especially, in the photon loss scenario, the sensitivity behaviors are analyzed and specific strategies are provided to restore the phase accuracies for symmetric and asymmetric losses.

Label prompt for multi-label text classification

One of the key problems in multi-label text classification is how to take advantage of the correlation among labels. However, it is very challenging to directly model the correlations among labels in a complex and unknown label space. In this paper, we propose a Label Mask multi-label text classification model (LM-MTC), which is inspired by the idea of cloze questions of language model. LM-MTC is able to capture implicit relationships among labels through the powerful ability of pre-train language models. On the basis, we assign a different token to each potential label, and randomly mask the token with a certain probability to build a label based Masked Language Model (MLM). We train the MTC and MLM together, further improving the generalization ability of the model. A large number of experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

QuanEstimation: An open-source toolkit for quantum parameter estimation

Quantum parameter estimation promises a high-precision measurement in theory, however, how to design the optimal scheme in a specific scenario, especially under a practical condition, is still a serious problem that needs to be solved case by case due to the existence of multiple mathematical bounds and optimization methods. Depending on the scenario considered, different bounds may be more or less suitable, both in terms of computational complexity and the tightness of the bound itself. At the same time, the metrological schemes provided by different optimization methods need to be tested against realization complexity, robustness, etc. Hence, a comprehensive toolkit containing various bounds and optimization methods is essential for the scheme design in quantum metrology. To fill this vacancy, here we present a Python-Julia-based open-source toolkit for quantum parameter estimation, which includes many well-used mathematical bounds and optimization methods. Utilizing this toolkit, all procedures in the scheme design, such as the optimizations of the probe state, control and measurement, can be readily and efficiently performed.

Direct measurement of quantum Fisher information

In the adiabatic perturbation theory, Berry curvature is related to the generalized force, and the quantum metric tensor is linked with energy fluctuation. While the former is tested with numerous numerical results and experimental realizations, the latter is less considered. Quantum Fisher information, key to quantum precision measurement, is four times quantum metric tensor. It is difficult to relate the quantum Fisher information with some physical observable. One interesting candidate is square of the symmetric logarithmic derivative, which is usually tough to obtain both theoretically and experimentally. The adiabatic perturbation theory enlightens us to measure the energy fluctuation to directly extract the quantum Fisher information. In this article, we first adopt an alternative way to derive the link of energy fluctuation to the quantum Fisher information. Then we numerically testify the direct extraction of the quantum Fisher information based on adiabatic perturbation in two-level systems and simulate the experimental realization in nitrogen-vacancy center with experimentally practical parameters. Statistical models such as transverse field Ising model and Heisenberg spin chains are also discussed to compare with the analytical result and show the level crossing respectively. Our discussion will provide a new practical scheme to measure the quantum Fisher information, and will also benefit the quantum precision measurement and the understand of the quantum Fisher information.

Instantaneous indirect measurement principle in quantum mechanics

In quantum systems, the measurement of operators and the measurement of the quantum states of the system are very challenging tasks. In this Letter, we propose a method to obtain the average value of one operator in a certain state by measuring the instantaneous change of the average value of another operator with the assistance of a known reference state. We refer to this measurement method as the instantaneous indirect measurement method. By studying the application of this method to some typical models, we find that this measurement can be applied to the measurement of an arbitrary state of a quantum system. Furthermore, for the system to be measured, we find that such measurement neither significantly affects the wave function of the system nor causes wave function collapse of the system. Also, our study shows that when two independent systems are coupled, the information mapping between them is done instantaneously. Finally, we discuss applying this measurement method to the measurement of quantum Fisher information, which quantizes the limited accuracy of estimating a parameter from a quantum state.

Quantum phase transition in XXZ central spin model

We investigate the quantum phase transition (QPT) in the XXZ central spin model, which can be described as a spin-1/2 particle coupled to N bath spins. In general, the QPT is supposed to occur only in the thermodynamical limit. In contrast, we present that the central spin model exhibits a normal-to-superradiant phase transition in the limit where the ratio of the transition frequency of the central spin to that of the bath spins and the number of the bath spins tend to infinity. We give the low-energy effective Hamiltonian analytically in the normal phase and the superradiant phase, and we find that the longitudinal interaction can significantly influence the excitation number and the coherence of the ground state. These two quantities are remarkably enhanced for the negative longitudinal interaction while suppressed for the positive longitudinal interaction. We also use the quantum Fisher information (QFI) to characterize the QPT and illustrate a measurement scheme that can be applied in practice. This work builds a novel connection between the qubit-spin systems and the qubit-field systems, which provides a possibility for the realization of criticality-enhanced quantum sensing in central spin systems.

Boundaries of capture hyperbolic components

In complex dynamics, the boundaries of higher dimensional hyperbolic components in holomorphic families of polynomials or rational maps are mysterious objects, whose topological and analytic properties are fundamental problems. In this paper, we show that in some typical families of polynomials (i.e. algebraic varieties defined by periodic critical relations), the boundary of a capture hyperbolic component $\mathcal H$ is homeomorphic to the sphere $S^{2\dim_\mathbb{C}(\mathcal{H})-1}$. Furthermore, we establish an unexpected identity for the Hausdorff dimension of $\partial \mathcal H$: $$\operatorname{H{.}dim}(\partial\mathcal{H}) = 2 \dim_\mathbb{C}(\mathcal{H})-2+\max_{f\in\partial\mathcal{H}} \operatorname{H{.}dim}(\partial A^J(f)),$$ where $A^J(f)$ is the union of the bounded attracting Fatou components of $f$ associated with the free critical points in the Julia set $J(f)$. In the proof, some new results with independent interests are discovered.

All-optical generation of deterministic squeezed Schrödinger-cat states

Quantum states are important resources and their preparations are essential prerequisites to all quantum technologies. However, they are extremely fragile due to the inevitable dissipations. Here, an all-optical generation of a deterministic squeezed Schr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$dinger-cat state based on dissipation is proposed. Our system is based on the Fredkin-type interaction between three optical modes, one of which is subject to coherent two-photon driving and the rest are coherent driving. We show that an effective degenerate three-wave mixing process can be engineered in our system, which can cause the simultaneous loss of two photons, resulting in the generation of a deterministic squeezed Schr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$dinger-cat state. More importantly, by controlling the driving fields in our system, the two-photon loss can be adjustable, which can accelerate the generation of squeezed Schr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$dinger-cat states. Besides, we exploit the squeezed Schr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$dinger-cat states to estimate the phase in the optical interferometer, and show that the quantum Fisher information about the phase can reach the Heisenberg limit in the limit of a large photon number. Meanwhile, it can have an order of magnitude factor improvement over the Heisenberg limit in the low-photon-number regime, which is very valuable for fragile systems that cannot withstand large photon fluxes. This work proposes an all-optical scheme to deterministically prepare the squeezed Schr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$dinger-cat state with high speed and can also be generalized to other physical platforms.
