Quantum interferometry for rotation sensing in an optical microresonator

We theoretically propose a scheme to perform rotation sensing in a Whispering-gallery-mode resonator setup. With the assistance of a large detuned two-level atom, which induces the effective coupling between clockwise and counterclockwise propagating modes in the resonator, we realize an effective interferometry with SU(2) algebraic structure. By studying the quantum Fisher information of the system, we find that the estimate accuracy for the angular velocity of the rotation can achieve and even break the Heisenberg limit in linear and nonlinear setup, respectively. The high performance of quantum metrology is proved to be associated with the state compressibility during the time evolution. We hope that our investigation will be useful in the design of a quantum gyroscope based on spinning resonators.

Bhatia-Davis formula in the quantum speed limit

The Bhatia-Davis theorem provides a useful upper bound for the variance in mathematics, and in quantum mechanics, the variance of a Hamiltonian is naturally connected to the quantum speed limit due to the Mandelstam-Tamm bound. Inspired by this connection, we construct a formula, referred to as the Bhatia-Davis formula, for the characterization of the quantum speed limit in the Bloch representation. We first prove that the Bhatia-Davis formula is an upper bound for a recently proposed operational definition of the quantum speed limit, which means it can be used to reveal the closeness between the timescale of certain chosen states to the systematic minimum timescale. In the case of the largest target angle, the Bhatia-Davis formula is proved to be a valid lower bound for the evolution time to reach the target when the energy structure is symmetric. Regarding few-level systems, it is also proved to be a valid lower bound for any state in two-level systems with any target, and for most mixed states with large target angles in equally spaced three-level systems.

Single-photon-triggered spin squeezing with decoherence reduction in optomechanics via phase matching

Quantum spin squeezing is an important resource for quantum information processing, but its squeezing degree is not easy to preserve in an open system with decoherence. Here, we propose a scheme to implement single-photon-triggered spin squeezing with decoherence reduction in an open system. In our system, a Dicke model (DM) is introduced into the quadratic optomechanics, which can be equivalent to an effective DM manipulated by the photon number. Besides, the phonon mode of the optomechanical system is coupled to a squeezed vacuum reservoir with a phase matching, resulting in that the thermal noise caused by the environment can be suppressed completely. We show that squeezing of the phonon mode triggered by a single photon can be transferred to the spin ensemble totally, and pairwise entanglement of the spin ensemble can be realized if and only if there is spin squeezing. Importantly, when considering the impact of the environment, our system can obtain a better squeezing degree than the optimal squeezing that can be achieved in the traditional DM. Meanwhile, the spin squeezing generated in our system is immune to the thermal noise. This work offers an effective way to generate spin squeezing with a single photon and to reduce decoherence in an open system, which will have promising applications in quantum information processing.

Extreme expected values and their applications in quantum information processing

We consider the probability distribution when the monotonic function $F(X)$ of the independent variable $X$ takes the maximum or minimum expected value under the two constraints of a certain probability and a certain expected value of the independent variable $X$. We proposed an equal probability and equal expected value splitting method. With this method, we proved four inequalities, and two of them can be reduced to Jensen's inequalities. Subsequently, we find that after dividing the non-monotone function $H(X)$ into multiple monotone intervals, the problem of solving the maximum and minimum expected values of $H(X)$ can be transformed into the problem of solving the extreme value of a multiple-variable function. Finally, we apply the proved theory to solve three problems in quantum information processing. When studying the quantum parameter estimation in Mach-Zehnder interferometer, for an equal total input photon number, we find an optimal path-symmetric input state that makes the quantum Fisher information take the maximum value, and we prove that the NOON state is the path-symmetric state that makes the quantum Fisher information takes the minimum value. When studying the quantum parameter estimation in Landau-Zener-Jaynes-Cummings model, we find the optimal initial state of the cavity field that makes the system obtain the maximum quantum Fisher information. Finally, for an equal initial average photon number, we find the optimal initial state of the cavity field that makes the Tavis-Cummings quantum battery have the maximum stored energy and the maximum average charging power.

Optimal state for a Tavis-Cummings quantum battery via the Bethe ansatz method

In this paper, we investigate the effect of different optical field initial states on the performance of the Tavis-Cummings (T-C) quantum battery. In solving the dynamical evolution of the system, we found a fast way to solve the Bethe ansatz equation. We find that the stored energy and the average charging power of the T-C quantum battery are closely related to the probability distribution of the optical field initial state in the number states. We define a quantity called the number-state stored energy. With this prescribed quantity, we only need to know the probability distribution of the optical field initial state in the number states to obtain the stored energy and the average charging power of the T-C quantum battery at any time. We propose an equal probability and equal expected value splitting method by which we can obtain two inequalities, and the two inequalities can be reduced to Jensen's inequalities. By this method, we found the optimal initial state of the optical field. We found that the maximum stored energy and the maximum average charging power of the T-C quantum battery are proportional to the initial average photon number, and the quantum battery can be fully charged when the initial average photon number is large enough. We found two phenomena, which can be described by two empirical inequalities. These two phenomena imply the hypersensitivity of the stored energy of the T-C quantum battery to the number-state cavity field. Finally, we discussed the impact of decoherence on battery performance.

Incorporating Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle into Quantum Multiparameter Estimation

The quantum multiparameter estimation is very different from the classical multiparameter estimation due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in quantum mechanics. When the optimal measurements for different parameters are incompatible, they cannot be jointly performed. We find a correspondence relationship between the inaccuracy of a measurement for estimating the unknown parameter with the measurement error in the context of measurement uncertainty relations. Taking this correspondence relationship as a bridge, we incorporate Heisenberg's uncertainty principle into quantum multiparameter estimation by giving a tradeoff relation between the measurement inaccuracies for estimating different parameters. For pure quantum states, this tradeoff relation is tight, so it can reveal the true quantum limits on individual estimation errors in such cases. We apply our approach to derive the tradeoff between attainable errors of estimating the real and imaginary parts of a complex signal encoded in coherent states and obtain the joint measurements attaining the tradeoff relation. We also show that our approach can be readily used to derive the tradeoff between the errors of jointly estimating the phase shift and phase diffusion without explicitly parameterizing quantum measurements.

New Recruiter and Jobs: The Largest Enterprise Data Migration at LinkedIn

In August 2019, we introduced to our members and customers the idea of moving LinkedIn's two core talent products -- Jobs and Recruiter -- onto a single platform to help talent professionals be even more productive. This single platform is called the New Recruiter & Jobs. A critical and difficult part of this effort is migrating their existing data from the legacy database to the new database and ensure there is no data discrepancy and no down time. In this article, we will discuss the general architecture for a successful data migration and the thought process we followed. Then we expand these ideas to our circumstances and explain in more detail about our specific challenges and solutions. In the Ramp Process section, we explain the inherent difficulties in satisfying our success criteria and describe how we overcome these difficulties and fulfill the success criteria practically.

Influence of kinetic energy on the metrology of Rabi frequency

The interacting model describing the Rabi transition is essential in studying atom-photon interactions, where the kinetic energy term is often neglected for the convenience of analysis. We first study the approximation through the fidelity approach and verify its valid region in the parameter space of detuning and momentum. We find that as the radiation field's momentum and the absolute value of detuning decrease, the approximation becomes valid. We further discover that the omission of the kinetic energy term will overestimate the measuring accuracy of the Rabi frequency in some parameter regions and underestimate the precision in other regimes with Fisher information tools' help. Notably, a specific choice of the initial Gaussian state's variance in position space will improve the measuring accuracy when we take the kinetic energy term into account. We also study the realistic measurement of the Rabi frequency for cases with and without the kinetic energy.

Measuring orbital angular momentum of vortex beams in optomechanics

Measuring the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of vortex beams, including the magnitude and the sign, has great application prospects due to its theoretically unbounded and orthogonal modes. Here, the sign-distinguishable OAM measurement in optomechanics is proposed, which is achieved by monitoring the shift of the transmission spectrum of the probe field in a double Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) rotational-cavity system. Compared with the traditional single LG rotational cavity, an asymmetric optomechanically induced transparency window can occur in our system. Meanwhile, the position of the resonance valley has a strong correlation with the magnitude and sign of OAM. This originally comes from the fact that the effective detuning of the cavity mode from the driving field can vary with the magnitude and sign of OAM, which causes the spectral shift to be directional for different signs of OAM. Our scheme solves the shortcoming of the inability to distinguish the sign of OAM in optomechanics, and works well for high-order vortex beams with topological charge value $\pm 45$, which is a significant improvement for measuring OAM based on the cavity optomechanical system.

Optimal building block of multipartite quantum battery

To take quantum advantage of collective effects in many-body system, we design an elementary block for building multipartite quantum battery, which enables charging an atomic ensemble with optimal numbers in a common thermal bath. One achieves maximum free energy as the stored energy in the steady state, which is prior to each atom parallel charging independently. It ascribes to quantum collective effects in the ensemble of atoms induced by the competition between the coherent driving and decoherent dissipation. The corresponding thermodynamic efficiency of the energy storage is analyzed. The existence of the optimal elementary units of multipartite quantum battery provide a guideline for designing a realizable charging scheme.

Rotating wave approximation for quadrupole interaction with high spin

Rotating wave approximation in a quantum spin system driven by a linearly polarized alternating magnetic field with quadrupole interaction presents is investigated in detail in this paper. The conventional way to employ the rotating wave approximation is to assume the dynamics being restricted in the reduced Hilbert space. However, when the driving strength is relatively strong or the driving is off resonant, the leakage from the target resonance subspace along with the effects from the counter-rotating terms cannot be neglected anymore. We propose the rotating wave approximation applied in the full Hilbert space to take the leakage from the target resonance subspace into account. To include the effects from the counter-rotating terms, we utilize the counterrotating hybridized rotating wave method in the reduced Hilbert space. The performance of these rotating wave approximation methods is compared by estimating the state fidelity as well as the operator fidelity and the results reveal that different methods may be employed for different practical circumstances.

Critically-enhanced spin-nematic squeezing and entanglement in dipolar spinor condensates

We study the quantum critical effect enhanced spin-nematic squeezing and quantum Fisher information (QFI) in the spin-1 dipolar atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the quantum phase transitions can improve the squeezing and QFI in the nearby regime of critical point, and the Heisenberg-limited high-precision metrology can be obtained. The different properties of the ground squeezing and entanglement under even and odd number of atoms are further analyzed, by calculating the exact analytical expressions. We also demonstrate the squeezing and entanglement generated by the spin-mixing dynamics around the phase transition point. It is shown that the steady squeezing and entanglement can be obtained, and the Bogoliubov approximation can well describe the dynamics of spin-nematic squeezed vacuum state.

Optimal quantum phase estimation in an atomic gyroscope based on Bose-Hubbard model

We investigate the optimal quantum state for an atomic gyroscope based on a three-site Bose-Hubbard model. In previous studies, various states such as the uncorrelated state, the BAT state and the NOON state are employed as the probe states to estimate the phase uncertainty. In this article, we present a Hermitian operator $\mathcal{H}$ and an equivalent unitary parametrization transformation to calculate the quantum Fisher information for any initial states. Exploiting this equivalent unitary parametrization transformation, we can seek the optimal state which gives the maximal quantum Fisher information on both lossless and lossy conditions. As a result, we find that the entangled even squeezed state (EESS) can significantly enhance the precision for moderate loss rates.

$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking enhanced cavity optomechanical magnetometry

$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking enhanced cavity optomechanical magnetometer is proposed, which is achieved by monitoring the change of intensity of a nonlinear four-wave mixing (FWM) process in a gain-cavity-assisted cavity optomechanical system (COMS). Compared with the traditional single loss COMS, the FWM intensity can be enhanced by two orders of magnitude when the gain-cavity-assisted COMS operates at the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking phase. Meanwhile, the sensitivity of magnetic field sensing can be increased from $10^{-9}$T to $10^{-11}$T. This originally comes from the fact that the effective detuning and decay of loss-cavity can be effectively modified in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking phase. Our work shows that an ultrahigh-sensitivity magnetometer can be achieved in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking COMS, which will have wide applications in the field of quantum sensing.

Quantum memory assisted precision rotation sensing

We propose to implement a solid-state rotation sensor by employing a many-body quantum spin system which takes the advantages of the easy controllability of the electron spin and the robustness provided by the collective nuclear spin state. The sensor consists of a central electron spin coupled to many surrounding nuclear spins. Previously, this central spin system has been suggested to realize a quantum memory. Here, we further utilize the collective nuclear spins, which store a certain quantum state, to detect the macroscopic rotation. Different from other nuclear spin-based gyroscopes, our proposal does not directly manipulate nuclear spins via nuclear magnetic resonance technique. We analytically and numerically investigate the effects of partial nuclear polarization and decoherence on the sensitivity. We also briefly introduce the procedure to generate entanglement between nuclear spins through the quantum memory technique and to utilize this entanglement to enhance the sensing performance. Our proposal paves the way to the experimental realization of a compact solid-state, full-electrical and spin-based gyroscope.

Quantum Fisher information matrix and multiparameter estimation

Quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) is a core concept in theoretical quantum metrology due to the significant importance of quantum Cramér-Rao bound in quantum parameter estimation. However, studies in recent years have revealed wide connections between QFIM and other aspects of quantum mechanics, including quantum thermodynamics, quantum phase transition, entanglement witness, quantum speed limit and non-Markovianity. These connections indicate that QFIM is more than a concept in quantum metrology, but rather a fundamental quantity in quantum mechanics. In this paper, we summarize the properties and existing calculation techniques of QFIM for various cases, and review the development of QFIM in some aspects of quantum mechanics apart from quantum metrology. On the other hand, as the main application of QFIM, the second part of this paper reviews the quantum multiparameter Cramér-Rao bound, its attainability condition and the associated optimal measurements. Moreover, recent developments in a few typical scenarios of quantum multiparameter estimation and the quantum advantages are also thoroughly discussed in this part.

Multiple-parameter estimation in a sagnac interferometer

We explored the general characteristics of a Sagnac interferometer in a multiparameter estimation process. We find that in the two-parameter estimation scenario, one cannot make both parameter measurement results reach the Heisenberg limit (HL) simultaneously when the input resources are maximally entangled. Only one of the parameters' uncertainty can approach the HL while the other is only scaled by the standard quantum limit (SQL). We also discussed the constraint conditions that make the quantum Cramer-Rao bound saturable. These constraint conditions would prompt one to choose proper evolution time and optimal input state. Under the constraint conditions, we find that the HL result obtained in the two parameter scenario would catch up with or even be more precise than that acquired by the single parameter measurement process in some special cases. Such general features about the Sagnac system revealed in our work may have a reference value in actual experiments.

Charging of quantum batteries with general harmonic power

We analyse the charging process of quantum batteries with general harmonic power. To describe the charge efficiency, we introduce the charge saturation and the charging power, and divide the charging mode into the saturated charging mode and the unsaturated charging mode. The relationships between the time-dependent charge saturation and the parameters of general driving field are discussed both analytically and numerically. And according to the Floquet theorem, we give the expressions of time-dependent charge saturation with the quasiengery and the Floquet states of the system. With both the analytical and numerical results, we find the optimal parameters to reach the best charging efficiency.
