Computing Resource Allocation of Mobile Edge Computing Networks Based on Potential Game Theory

Mobile edge computing (MEC) networks are one of the key technologies for ultra-reliability and low-latency communications. The computing resource allocation solution needs to be carefully designed to guarantee the computing resource efficiency of MEC networks. Based on the potential game theory, a computing resource allocation solution is proposed to reduce energy consumption and improve computing resource efficiency in MEC networks. The computing resource allocation solution includes two parts: the first part is the power control scheme based on the potential game theory and the second part is the computing resource allocation scheme based on linear programming. The power control scheme is to find a set of the transmission powers of base stations (BSs) that maximizes the potential function of MEC networks. The computing resource allocation scheme is to maximize the average computing resource allocation coefficient of the MEC networks based on the results of the power control scheme. Compared with traditional solutions, simulation results indicate the computing resource utilization and energy efficiency of the proposed computing resource allocation solution are significantly improved.

Performance Analysis of Non-Orthogonal Multicast in Two-tier Heterogeneous Networks

With the explosive growth of mobile services, non-orthogonal broadcast/multicast transmissions can effectively improves spectrum efficiency. Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) represents a paradigm shift from conventional orthogonal multiple-access (OMA) concepts and has been recognized as one of the key enabling technologies for fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. In this paper, a two-tier heterogeneous network is studied, in which the wireless signal power is partitioned by the NOMA scheme. Moreover, the coverage probability, the average rate and the average QoE are derived to evaluate network performance. Simulation results show that compared with the OMA method, non-orthogonal broadcast/multicast method improve both the average user rate and QoE in the two-tier heterogeneous network.

Energy Efficiency Optimization of Generalized Spatial Modulation with Sub-Connected Hybrid Precoding

Energy efficiency (EE) optimization of millimeter wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is emerging as an important challenge for the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems. However, the power of radio frequency (RF) chains increases sharply due to the high carrier frequency in mm-Wave massive MIMO systems. To overcome this issue, a new energy efficiency optimization solution is proposed based on the structure of the generalized spatial modulation (GSM) and sub-connected hybrid precoding (HP). Moreover, the computation power of mm-Wave massive MIMO systems is considered for optimizing the EE. Simulation results indicate that the EE of the GSM-HP scheme outperforms the full digital precoding (FDP) scheme in the mm-Wave massive MIMO scene, and 88\% computation power can be saved by the proposed GSM-HP scheme.

Vehicles to Pedestrians Signal Transmissions Based on Cloud Computing

Collisions between vehicles and pedestrians usually result in the fatality to the vulnerable road users (VRUs). Thus, new technologies are needed to be developed for protecting the VRUs. Based on the high density of pedestrians and limited computing capability of base stations, in this paper the cloud computing technologies are adopted to handle the huge amounts of safety-critical messages. Moreover, the wireless multi-hop backhaul technology is adopted to overcome the bottlenecks of limited transmission capability and queueing delay of the transmitted safety-critical messages between base stations and clouds. Based on the multi-hop wireless transmission scheme, the signal transmission success probability and delay between pedestrians and clouds are derived for performance analysis. Furthermore, numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the relationship between the transmission success probability and the received signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) threshold.

Uplinks Analysis and Optimization of Hybrid Vehicular Networks

5G vehicular communication is one of key enablers in next generation intelligent transportation system (ITS), that require ultra-reliable and low latency communication (URLLC). To meet this requirement, a new hybrid vehicular network structure which supports both centralized network structure and distributed structure is proposed in this paper. Based on the proposed network structure, a new vehicular network utility model considering the latency and reliability in vehicular networks is developed based on Euclidean norm theory. Building on the Pareto improvement theory in economics, a vehicular network uplink optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the uplink utility of vehicles on the roads. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the uplink vehicular network utility in vehicular networks to meet the URLLC requirements.

Coverage and Handoff Analysis of 5G Fractal Small Cell Networks

It is anticipated that much higher network capacity will be achieved by the fifth generation (5G) small cell networks incorporated with the millimeter wave (mmWave) technology. However, mmWave signals are more sensitive to blockages than signals in lower frequency bands, which highlights the effect of anisotropic path loss in network coverage. According to the fractal characteristics of cellular coverage, a multi-directional path loss model is proposed for 5G small cell networks, where different directions are subject to different path loss exponents. Furthermore, the coverage probability, association probability, and the handoff probability are derived for 5G fractal small cell networks based on the proposed multi-directional path loss model. Numerical results indicate that the coverage probability with the multi-directional path loss model is less than that with the isotropic path loss model, and the association probability with long link distance, e.g., 150m, increases obviously with the increase of the effect of anisotropic path loss in 5G fractal small cell networks. Moreover, it is observed that the anisotropic propagation environment is having a profound impact on the handoff performance. Meanwhile, we could conclude that the resulting heavy handoff overhead is emerging as a new challenge for 5G fractal small cell networks.

Cost Efficiency Optimization of 5G Wireless Backhaul Networks

The wireless backhaul network provides an attractive solution for the urban deployment of fifth generation (5G) wireless networks that enables future ultra dense small cell networks to meet the ever-increasing user demands. Optimal deployment and management of 5G wireless backhaul networks is an interesting and challenging issue. In this paper we propose the optimal gateways deployment and wireless backhaul route schemes to maximize the cost efficiency of 5G wireless backhaul networks. In generally, the changes of gateways deployment and wireless backhaul route are presented in different time scales. Specifically, the number and locations of gateways are optimized in the long time scale of 5G wireless backhaul networks. The wireless backhaul routings are optimized in the short time scale of 5G wireless backhaul networks considering the time-variant over wireless channels. Numerical results show the gateways and wireless backhaul route optimization significantly increases the cost efficiency of 5G wireless backhaul networks. Moreover, the cost efficiency of proposed optimization algorithm is better than that of conventional and most widely used shortest path (SP) and Bellman-Ford (BF) algorithms in 5G wireless backhaul networks.

How Much of Wireless Rate Can Smartphones Support in 5G Networks?

Due to the higher wireless transmission rates in the fifth generation (5G) cellular networks, higher computation overhead is incurred in smartphones, which can cause the wireless transmission rates to be limited by the computation capability of wireless terminals. In this case, is there a maximum receiving rate for smartphones to maintain stable wireless communications in 5G cellular networks? The main objective of this article is to investigate the maximum receiving rate of smartphones and its influence on 5G cellular networks. Based on Landauer's principle and the safe temperature bound on the smartphone surface, a maximum receiving rate of the smartphone is proposed for 5G cellular networks. Moreover, the impact of the maximum receiving rate of smartphones on the link adaptive transmission schemes has been investigated. Numerical analyses imply that the maximum receiving rate of smartphones cannot always catch up with the downlink rates of future 5G cellular networks. Therefore, the link adaptive transmission scheme for future 5G cellular networks has to take the maximum receiving rate of smartphones into account.

Joint Optimization of Computation and Communication Power in Multi-user Massive MIMO Systems

With the growing interest in the deployment of massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems and millimeter wave technology for fifth generation (5G) wireless systems, the computation power to the total power consumption ratio is expected to increase rapidly due to high data traffic processing at the baseband unit. Therefore in this paper, a joint optimization problem of computation and communication power is formulated for multi-user massive MIMO systems with partially-connected structures of radio frequency (RF) transmission systems. When the computation power is considered for massiv MIMO systems, the results of this paper reveal that the energy efficiency of massive MIMO systems decreases with increasing the number of antennas and RF chains, which is contrary with the conventional energy efficiency analysis results of massive MIMO systems, i.e., only communication power is considered. To optimize the energy efficiency of multi-user massive MIMO systems, an upper bound on energy efficiency is derived. Considering the constraints on partially-connected structures, a suboptimal solution consisting of baseband and RF precoding matrices is proposed to approach the upper bound on energy efficiency of multi-user massive MIMO systems. Furthermore, an oPtimized Hybrid precOding with computation and commuNication powEr (PHONE) algorithm is developed to realize the joint optimization of computation and communication power. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm improves energy and cost efficiencies and the maximum power saving is achieved by 76.59\% for multi-user massive MIMO systems with partially-connected structures.

Base Station Switch-off with Mutual Repulsion in 5G Massive MIMO Networks

When small cells are densely deployed in the fifth generation (5G) cellular networks, switching off a part of base stations (BSs) is a practical approach for saving energy consumption considering the variation of traffic load. The small cell network with the massive multi-input multi-output (massive MIMO) system is analyzed in this paper due to the dense deployment and low power consumption. Based on the BS switch-off strategy with distance constraints, the energy and coverage efficiency are investigated to illustrate the performance of the BS switch-off strategy. Simulation results indicate that the energy efficiency and coverage efficiency of the proposed strategy are better than the random strategy. The energy efficiency increases with the BS intensity and the minimal distance, and a maximum coverage efficiency can be achieved with the increase of the BS intensity and the minimum distance. In this case, the optimal BS switch-off strategy can be designed under this work in the actual scene.

Tradeoff between Delay and Physical Layer Security in Wireless Networks

Exchange of crucial and confidential information leads to the unprecedented attention on the security problem in wireless networks. Though the security has been studied in a number of works, the joint optimization of the physical layer security and the end-to-end delay management, which requires a meticulous cross-layer design, has seldom been evaluated. In this work, by combining the tools from stochastic geometry and queueing theory, we analyze the tradeoff between the delay and the security performance in large wireless networks. We further propose a simple transmission mechanism which splits a message into two packets and evaluate its effect on the mean delay and the secrecy outage probability. Our numerical results reveal that the security performance is better for larger path loss exponent when the density of legitimate nodes is large, and it is reverse when the density is small. Moreover, it is observed that by introducing the simple mechanism of message split, the security performance is greatly improved in the backlogged scenario and slightly improved in the dynamic scenario when the density of legitimate transmitters is large. In summary, this work provides an understanding and a rule-of-thumb for the practical design of wireless networks where both the delay and the security are key concerns.

Cache-Aided Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

In this paper, we propose a novel joint caching and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme to facilitate advanced downlink transmission for next generation cellular networks. In addition to reaping the conventional advantages of caching and NOMA transmission, the proposed cache-aided NOMA scheme also exploits cached data for interference cancellation which is not possible with separate caching and NOMA transmission designs. Furthermore, as caching can help to reduce the residual interference power, several decoding orders are feasible at the receivers, and these decoding orders can be flexibly selected for performance optimization. We characterize the achievable rate region of cache-aided NOMA and investigate its benefits for minimizing the time required to complete video file delivery. Our simulation results reveal that, compared to several baseline schemes, the proposed cache-aided NOMA scheme significantly expands the achievable rate region for downlink transmission, which translates into substantially reduced file delivery times.

Dense Small Cell Networks: From Noise-Limited to Dense Interference-Limited

Considering both non-line-of-sight (NLoS) and line-of-sight (LoS) transmissions, the transitional behaviors from noise-limited regime to dense interference-limited regime have been investigated for the fifth generation (5G) small cell networks (SCNs). Besides, we identify four performance regimes based on base station (BS) density, i.e., (i) the noise-limited regime, (ii) the signal-dominated regime, (iii) the interference-dominated regime, and (iv) the interference-limited regime. To characterize the performance regime, we propose a unified framework analyzing the future 5G wireless networks over generalized shadowing/fading channels, in which the user association schemes based on the strongest instantaneous received power (SIRP) and the strongest average received power (SARP) can be studied, while NLoS/LoS transmissions and multi-slop path loss model are considered. Simulation results indicate that different factors, i.e., noise, desired signal, and interference, successively and separately dominate the network performance with the increase of BS density. Hence, our results shed new light on the design and management of SCNs in urban and rural areas with different BS deployment densities.

On the Energy-Efficient Deployment for Ultra-Dense Heterogeneous Networks with NLoS and LoS Transmissions

We investigate network performance of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and study the maximum energy-efficient base station (BS) deployment incorporating probabilistic non-line-of-sight (NLoS) and line-of-sight (LoS) transmissions. First, we develop an analytical framework with the maximum instantaneous received power (MIRP) and the maximum average received power (MARP) association schemes to model the coverage probability and related performance metrics, e.g., the potential throughput (PT) and the energy efficiency (EE). Second, we formulate two optimization problems to achieve the maximum energy-efficient deployment solution with specific service criteria. Simulation results show that there are tradeoffs among the coverage probability, the total power consumption, and the EE. To be specific, the maximum coverage probability with ideal power consumption is superior to that with practical power consumption when the total power constraint is small and inferior to that with practical power consumption when the total power constraint becomes large. Moreover, the maximum EE is a decreasing function with respect to the coverage probability constraint.

Multi-Path Cooperative Communications Networks for Augmented and Virtual Reality Transmission

Augmented and/or virtual reality (AR/VR) are emerging as one of the main applications in future fifth generation (5G) networks. To meet the requirements of lower latency and massive data transmission in AR/VR applications, a solution with software-defined networking (SDN) architecture is proposed for 5G small cell networks. On this basis, a multi-path cooperative route (MCR) scheme is proposed to facilitate the AR/VR wireless transmissions in 5G small cell networks, in which the delay of MCR scheme is analytically studied. Furthermore, a service effective energy optimal (SEEO) algorithm is developed for AR/VR wireless transmission in 5G small cell networks. Simulation results indicate that both the delay and service effective energy (SEE) of the proposed MCR scheme outperform the delay and SEE of the conventional single path route scheme in 5G small cell networks.

Energy Efficiency of Multi-user Multi-antenna Random Cellular Networks with Minimum Distance Constraints

Compared with conventional regular hexagonal cellular models, random cellular network models resemble real cellular networks much more closely. However, most studies of random cellular networks are based on the Poisson point process and do not take into account the fact that adjacent base stations (BSs) should be separated with a minimum distance to avoid strong interference among each other. In this paper, based on the hard core point process (HCPP), we propose a multi-user multi-antenna random cellular network model with the aforementioned minimum distance constraint for adjacent BSs. Taking into account the effects of small scale fading and shadowing, interference and capacity models are derived for the multi-user multi-antenna HCPP random cellular networks. Furthermore, a spectrum efficiency model as well as an energy efficiency model is presented, based on which, the maximum achievable energy efficiency of the considered multi-user multiantenna HCPP random cellular networks is investigated. Simulation results demonstrate that the energy efficiency of conventional Poison point process (PPP) cellular networks is underestimated when the minimum distance between adjacent BSs is ignored.

5G Ultra-dense networks with non-uniform Distributed Users

User distribution in ultra-dense networks (UDNs) plays a crucial role in affecting the performance of UDNs due to the essential coupling between the traffic and the service provided by the networks. Existing studies are mostly based on the assumption that users are uniformly distributed in space. The non-uniform user distribution has not been widely considered despite that it is much closer to the real scenario. In this paper, Radiation and Absorbing model (R&A model) is first adopted to analyze the impact of the non-uniformly distributed users on the performance of 5G UDNs. Based on the R&A model and queueing network theory, the stationary user density in each hot area is investigated. Furthermore, the coverage probability, network throughput and energy efficiency are derived based on the proposed theoretical model. Compared with the uniformly distributed assumption, it is shown that non-uniform user distribution has a significant impact on the performance of UDNs.
