Spatio-temporal Modeling for Massive and Sporadic Access

The vision for smart city imperiously appeals to the implementation of Internet-of-Things (IoT), some features of which, such as massive access and bursty short packet transmissions, require new methods to enable the cellular system to seamlessly support its integration. Rigorous theoretical analysis is indispensable to obtain constructive insight for the networking design of massive access. In this paper, we propose and define the notion of massive and sporadic access (MSA) to quantitatively describe the massive access of IoT devices. We evaluate the temporal correlation of interference and successful transmission events, and verify that such correlation is negligible in the scenario of MSA. In view of this, in order to resolve the difficulty in any precise spatio-temporal analysis where complex interactions persist among the queues, we propose an approximation that all nodes are moving so fast that their locations are independent at different time slots. Furthermore, we compare the original static network and the equivalent network with high mobility to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approximation approach. The proposed approach is promising for providing a convenient and general solution to evaluate and design the IoT network with massive and sporadic access.

Smart Contract-based Secure Spectrum Sharing in Multi-Operators Wireless Communication Networks

Multiple-operators (multi-OPs) spectrum sharing mechanism can effectively improve the spectrum utilization in fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication networks. The secondary users are introduced to opportunistically access the licensed spectrum of idle operators (OPs). However, the identity privacy and data security issues raise great concerns about the secure spectrum sharing among multi-OPs. To address these challenges, a consortium blockchain trust framework is proposed for the spectrum sharing in multi-OPs wireless communication networks in this paper. A real consortium blockchain is constructed among multi-OPs. The Multi-Ops Spectrum Sharing (MOSS) smart contract is designed on the constructed consortium blockchain to implement the spectrum trading among multi-OPs. Without the need of trustless spectrum broker, the MOSS smart contract enforces multi-OPs to share the spectrum truthfully and designs a punishment mechanism to punish malicious OPs. Simulation results tested on the Remix integrated development environment (IDE) indicate the feasibility of the designed MOSS smart contract. The performance analysis of the proposed consortium blockchain trust framework demonstrates that the privacy, openness and fairness of the proposed solution are better than traditional spectrum allocation solutions.

Capacity-Aware Edge Caching in Fog Computing Networks

This paper studies edge caching in fog computing networks, where a capacity-aware edge caching framework is proposed by considering both the limited fog cache capacity and the connectivity capacity of base stations (BSs). By allowing cooperation between fog nodes and cloud data center, the average-download-time (ADT) minimization problem is formulated as a multi-class processor queuing process. We prove the convexity of the formulated problem and propose an Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM)-based algorithm that can achieve the minimum ADT and converge much faster than existing algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate that the allocation of fog cache capacity and connectivity capacity of BSs needs to be balanced according to the network status. While the maximization of the edge-cache-hit-ratio (ECHR) by utilizing all available fog cache capacity is helpful when the BS connectivity capacity is sufficient, it is preferable to keep a lower ECHR and allocate more traffic to the cloud when the BS connectivity capacity is deficient.

Federated Orchestration for Network Slicing of Bandwidth and Computational Resource

Network slicing has been considered as one of the key enablers for 5G to support diversified IoT services and application scenarios. This paper studies the distributed network slicing for a massive scale IoT network supported by 5G with fog computing. Multiple services with various requirements need to be supported by both spectrum resource offered by 5G network and computational resourc of the fog computing network. We propose a novel distributed framework based on a new control plane entity, federated-orchestrator , which can coordinate the spectrum and computational resources without requiring any exchange of the local data and resource information from BSs. We propose a distributed resource allocation algorithm based on Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers with Partial Variable Splitting . We prove DistADMM-PVS minimizes the average service response time of the entire network with guaranteed worst-case performance for all supported types of services when the coordination between the F-orchestrator and BSs is perfectly synchronized. Motivated by the observation that coordination synchronization may result in high coordination delay that can be intolerable when the network is large in scale, we propose a novel asynchronized ADMM algorithm. We prove that AsynADMM can converge to the global optimal solution with improved scalability and negligible coordination delay. We evaluate the performance of our proposed framework using two-month of traffic data collected in a in-campus smart transportation system supported by a 5G network. Extensive simulation has been conducted for both pedestrian and vehicular-related services during peak and non-peak hours. Our results show that the proposed framework offers significant reduction on service response time for both supported services, especially compared to network slicing with only a single resource.

Distributed Resource Allocation for Network Slicing of Bandwidth and Computational Resource

Network slicing has been considered as one of the key enablers for 5G to support diversified services and application scenarios. This paper studies the distributed network slicing utilizing both the spectrum resource offered by communication network and computational resources of a coexisting fog computing network. We propose a novel distributed framework based on a new control plane entity, regional orchestrator (RO), which can be deployed between base stations (BSs) and fog nodes to coordinate and control their bandwidth and computational resources. We propose a distributed resource allocation algorithm based on Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers with Partial Variable Splitting (DistADMM-PVS). We prove that the proposed algorithm can minimize the average latency of the entire network and at the same time guarantee satisfactory latency performance for every supported type of service. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm converges much faster than some other existing algorithms. The joint network slicing with both bandwidth and computational resources can offer around 15% overall latency reduction compared to network slicing with only a single resource.

An Actor-Critic-Based UAV-BSs Deployment Method for Dynamic Environments

In this paper, the real-time deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as flying base stations (BSs) for optimizing the throughput of mobile users is investigated for UAV networks. This problem is formulated as a time-varying mixed-integer non-convex programming (MINP) problem, which is challenging to find an optimal solution in a short time with conventional optimization techniques. Hence, we propose an actor-critic-based (AC-based) deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method to find near-optimal UAV positions at every moment. In the proposed method, the process searching for the solution iteratively at a particular moment is modeled as a Markov decision process (MDP). To handle infinite state and action spaces and improve the robustness of the decision process, two powerful neural networks (NNs) are configured to evaluate the UAV position adjustments and make decisions, respectively. Compared with the heuristic algorithm, sequential least-squares programming and fixed UAVs methods, simulation results have shown that the proposed method outperforms these three benchmarks in terms of the throughput at every moment in UAV networks.

The New Purity and Capacity Models for the OAM-mmWave Communication Systems under Atmospheric Turbulence

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) wireless communication technology is widely studied in recent literatures. But the atmospheric turbulence is rarely considered in analyzing the capacity of OAM-based millimeter wave (OAM-mmWave) communication systems. The OAM-mmWave propagated in the atmosphere environments is usually interfered by the atmospheric turbulence, resulting in the crosstalk among OAM channels, capacity degradation, etc. By taking into account the atmospheric turbulence effect, this paper proposes a new purity model and a new capacity model for the OAM-mmWave communication systems. Simulation results indicate that the OAM-mmWave propagation in the atmosphere environments is evidently interfered by atmospheric turbulence, where the capacity of the OAMmmWave communication systems decreases with the increase of the transmission frequency.

A New Small-World IoT Routing Mechanism based on Cayley Graphs

An increasing number of low-power Internet of Things (IoT) devices will be widely deployed in the near future. Considering the short-range communication of low-power devices, multi-hop transmissions will become an important transmission mechanism in IoT networks. It is crucial for lowpower devices to transmit data over long distances via multihop in a low-delay and reliable way. Small-world characteristics of networks indicate that the network has an advantage of a small Average Shortest-path Length (ASL) and a high Average Clustering Coefficient (ACC). In this paper, a new IoT routing mechanism considering small-world characteristics is proposed to reduce the delay and improve the reliability. The ASL and ACC are derived for performance analysis of small-world characteristics in IoT networks based on Cayley graphs. Besides, the reliability and delay models are proposed for Small-World IoT based on Cayley grapHs (SWITCH). Simulation results demonstrate that SWITCH has lower delay and better reliability than that of conventional Nearest Neighboring Routing (NNR). Moreover, the maximum delay of SWITCH is reduced by 50.6% compared with that by NNR.

Complex-BP-Neural-Network-based Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave Multiuser Massive MIMO Systems

The high energy consumption of massive multi-input multi-out (MIMO) system has become a prominent problem in the millimeter wave(mm-Wave) communication scenario. The hybrid precoding technology greatly reduces the number of radio frequency(RF) chains by handing over part of the coding work to the phase shifting network, which can effectively improve energy efficiency. However, conventional hybrid precoding algorithms based on mathematical means often suffer from performance loss and high computational complexity. In this paper, a novel BP-neural-network-enabled hybrid precoding algorithm is proposed, in which the full-digital zero-forcing(ZF) precoding is set as the training target. Considering that signals at the base station are complex, we choose the complex neural network that has a richer representational capacity. Besides, we present the activation function of the complex neural network and the gradient derivation of the back propagation process. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed hybrid precoding algorithm can optimally approximate the ZF precoding.

Power-Consumption Outage Challenge in Next-Generation Cellular Networks

The conventional outage in wireless communication systems is caused by the deterioration of the wireless communication link, i.e., the received signal power is less than the minimum received signal power. Is there a possibility that the outage occurs in wireless communication systems with a good channel state? Based on both communication and heat transfer theories, a power-consumption outage in the wireless communication between millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) base stations (BSs) and smartphones has been modeled and analyzed. Moreover, the total transmission time model with respect to the number of power-consumption outages is derived for mmWave massive MIMO communication systems. Simulation results indicate that the total transmission time is extended by the power-consumption outage, which deteriorates the average transmission rate of mmWave massive MIMO BSs.

Enabling security and High Energy Efficiency in the Internet of Things with Massive MIMO Hybrid Precoding

Recently, the security of Internet of Things (IoT) has been an issue of great concern. Physical layer security methods can help IoT networks achieve information-theoretical secrecy. Nevertheless, utilizing physical security methods, such as artificial noise (AN) may cost extra power, which leads to low secure energy efficiency. In this paper, the hybrid precoding technique is employed to improve the secure energy efficiency of the IoT network. A secure energy efficiency optimization problem is formulated for the IoT network. Due to the non-convexity of the problem and the feasible domain, the problem is firstly transformed into a tractable suboptimal form. Then a secure hybrid precoding energy efficient (SEEHP) algorithm is proposed to tackle the problem. Numerical results indicate that the proposed SEEHP algorithm achieves higher secure energy efficiency compared with three existing physical layer security algorithms, especially when the number of transmit antennas is large.

Neural Networks in Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO Systems

Neural networks have been applied to the physical layer of wireless communication systems to solve complex problems. In millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, hybrid precoding has been considered as an energy-efficient technology to replace fully-digital precoding. The way of designing hybrid precoding in mmWave massive MIMO systems by multi-layer neural networks has not been investigated. Based on further decomposing the baseband precoding matrix, an idea is proposed in this paper to map hybrid precoding structure to a multi-layer neural network. Considering the deterioration in the throughput and energy efficiency of mmWave massive MIMO systems, the feasibility of the proposed idea is analyzed. Moreover, a singular value decomposition (SVD) based decomposing (SVDDE) algorithm is proposed to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed idea. Simulation results indicate that there is an optimal number of users which can minimize the performance deterioration. Moreover, the simulation results also show that slight deterioration in the throughput and energy efficiency of mmWave massive MIMO systems is caused by further decomposing the baseband precoding matrix. In other words, further decomposing the baseband precoding matrix is a feasible way to map the hybrid precoding structure to a multi-layer neural network.

Performance Analysis of Urban Mmwave Multi-hop V2V Communications with Shifted-Exponential Distribution Headway

With the emergence of autonomous driving and 5G mobile communication systems, how to design vehicular networks to meet the requirements of ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) between autonomous vehicles is widely concerned by the academia and industry. In this paper, message transmission delay and reliability between autonomous vehicles based on millimeter wave (mmwave) multi-hop V2V communications under urban road environment are investigated. Considering the fact that vehicles cannot come arbitrarily close to each other, shifted-exponential distribution is proposed to model the headway distance (the distance between the head of a vehicle and the head of its follower). Simulation results show that message transmission delay and reliability decrease with the increase of the path loss exponent and are also affected by the minimum safe distance between adjacent vehicles.

Cache-Aided Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access: The Two-User Case

In this paper, we propose a cache-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for spectrally efficient downlink transmission. The proposed scheme not only reaps the benefits associated with NOMA and caching, but also exploits the data cached at the users for interference cancellation. As a consequence, caching can help to reduce the residual interference power, making multiple decoding orders at the users feasible. The resulting flexibility in decoding can be exploited for improved NOMA detection. We characterize the achievable rate region of cache-aided NOMA and derive the Pareto optimal rate tuples forming the boundary of the rate region. Moreover, we optimize cache-aided NOMA for minimization of the time required for completing file delivery. The optimal decoding order and the optimal transmit power and rate allocation are derived as functions of the cache status, the file sizes, and the channel conditions. Simulation results confirm that, compared to several baseline schemes, the proposed cache-aided NOMA scheme significantly expands the achievable rate region and increases the sum rate for downlink transmission, which translates into substantially reduced file delivery times.

Energy Efficient Optimization of Wireless-powered 5G Full Duplex Cellular Networks: A Mean Field Game Approach

This paper studies the power allocation of an ultra-dense cellular network consisting of multiple full-duplex (FD) base stations (BSs) serving a large number of half-duplex (HD) user equipments (UEs) located in a wide geographical area. Each BS consists of a baseband unit (BBU) that is responsible for signal processing and base station control, and a radio remote unit (RRU) that corresponds to a radio transceiver remotely built closer to the UEs. We consider a wireless-powered cellular network in which the BBU can periodically charge the RRU. We model the energy efficiency and coverage optimization problem for this network as a mean field game. We consider the weighted energy efficiency of the BS as the main performance metrics and evaluate the optimal strategy that can be adopted by the FD BSs in an ultra-dense network setting. Based on the interference and network energy efficiency models of the mean field game theory, Nash equilibrium of our proposed game is derived. Utilizing solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) and Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equations, a new power transmission strategy is developed for the BSs to optimize the energy efficiency of 5G cellular networks with full duplex transmissions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed strategy not only improves the energy efficiency but also ensures the average network coverage probability converges to a stable level.

Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications in Autonomous Vehicular Networks

Autonomous vehicles are expected to emerge as a main trend in vehicle development over the next decade. To support autonomous vehicles, ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) is required between autonomous vehicles and infrastructure networks, e.g., fifth generation (5G) cellular networks. Hence, reliability and latency must be jointly investigated in 5G autonomous vehicular networks. Utilizing the Euclidean norm theory, we first propose a reliability and latency joint function to evaluate the joint impact of reliability and latency in 5G autonomous vehicular networks. The interactions between reliability and latency are illustrated via Monto-Carlo (MC) simulations of 5G autonomous vehicular networks. To improve both the reliability and latency performance and implement URLLC, a new network slicing solution that extends from resource slicing to service and function slicing is presented for 5G autonomous vehicular networks. The simulation results indicate that the proposed network slicing solution can improve both the reliability and latency performance and ensure URLLC in 5G autonomous vehicular networks.

A Novel JT-CoMP Scheme in 5G Fractal Small Cell Networks

To satisfy the requirement of the fifth generation (5G) mobile communications that offers an ultra high data rate of 100Mbps to 1Gbps anytime and anywhere, the coordinated multipoint (CoMP) technique is proposed to mitigate inter-cell interference to improve the coverage of high data rate services, cell-edge throughput, and system capacity. However, the joint transmission (JT) CoMP technique is difficult to be applied in practice due to the critical time synchronization for multiple coordination links and the bottleneck of backhaul capacity and radio resource at each small cell base stations (SBSs). Moreover, since the coordination SBSs in the conditional scheme are entirely separate from each other, different time of arrivals at the user cause the severe time synchronization problem. The anisotropic propagation environment in the urban scenario makes the implementation condition even worse. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel JT-CoMP scheme with the anisotropic path loss model to minimize the network backhaul traffic subject to the constraints on the radio resource and the differences in time of arrivals. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed distance-resource-limited CoMP scheme can obtain the maximum achievable rate with the minimum network backhaul traffic, compared with existing schemes.

Energy Efficiency of Generalized Spatial Modulation Aided Massive MIMO Systems

One of focuses in green communication studies is the energy efficiency (EE) of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Although the massive MIMO technology can improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of cellular networks by configuring a large number of antennas at base stations (BSs), the energy consumption of radio frequency (RF) chains increases dramatically. The increment of energy consumption is caused by the increase of RF chain number to match the antenna number in massive MIMO communication systems. To overcome this problem, a generalized spatial modulation (GSM) solution is presented to simultaneously reduce the number of RF chains and maintain the SE of massive MIMO communication systems. A EE model is proposed to estimate the transmission and computation power of massive MIMO communication systems with GSM. Simulation results demonstrate that the EE of massive MIMO communication systems with GSM outperforms the massive MIMO communication systems without GSM. Besides, the computation power consumed by massive MIMO communication systems with GSM is effectively reduced.
