Robust Beamforming Design for RIS-aided Cell-free Systems with CSI Uncertainties and Capacity-limited Backhaul

In this paper, we consider the robust beamforming design in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free (CF) system considering the channel state information (CSI) uncertainties of both the direct channels and cascaded channels at the transmitter with capacity-limited backhaul. We jointly optimize the precoding at the access points (APs) and the phase shifts at multiple RISs to maximize the worst-case sum rate of the CF system subject to the constraints of maximum transmit power of APs, unit-modulus phase shifts, limited backhaul capacity, and bounded CSI errors. By applying a series of transformations, the non-smoothness and semi-infinite constraints are tackled in a low-complexity manner that facilitates the design of an alternating optimization (AO)-based iterative algorithm. The proposed algorithm divides the considered problem into two subproblems. For the RIS phase shifts optimization subproblem, we exploit the penalty convex-concave procedure (P-CCP) to obtain a stationary solution and achieve effective initialization. For precoding optimization subproblem, successive convex approximation (SCA) is adopted with a convergence guarantee to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust beamforming design, which achieves superior performance with low complexity. Moreover, the importance of RIS phase shift optimization for robustness and the advantages of distributed RISs in the CF system are further highlighted.

Self-information Domain-based Neural CSI Compression with Feature Coupling

Deep learning (DL)-based channel state information (CSI) feedback methods compressed the CSI matrix by exploiting its delay and angle features straightforwardly, while the measure in terms of information contained in the CSI matrix has rarely been considered. Based on this observation, we introduce self-information as an informative CSI representation from the perspective of information theory, which reflects the amount of information of the original CSI matrix in an explicit way. Then, a novel DL-based network is proposed for temporal CSI compression in the self-information domain, namely SD-CsiNet. The proposed SD-CsiNet projects the raw CSI onto a self-information matrix in the newly-defined self-information domain, extracts both temporal and spatial features of the self-information matrix, and then couples these two features for effective compression. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed SD-CsiNet by exploiting the self-information of CSI. Particularly for compression ratios 1/8 and 1/16, the SD-CsiNet respectively achieves 7.17 dB and 3.68 dB performance gains compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Semi-supervised MIMO Detection Using Cycle-consistent Generative Adversarial Network

In this paper, a new semi-supervised deep multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection approach using a cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (CycleGAN) is proposed for communication systems without any prior knowledge of underlying channel distributions. Specifically, we propose the CycleGAN detector by constructing a bidirectional loop of two modified least squares generative adversarial networks (LS-GAN). The forward LS-GAN learns to model the transmission process, while the backward LS-GAN learns to detect the received signals. By optimizing the cycle-consistency of the transmitted and received signals through this loop, the proposed method is trained online and semi-supervisedly using both the pilots and the received payload data. As such, the demand on labelled training dataset is considerably controlled, and thus the overhead is effectively reduced. Numerical results show that the proposed CycleGAN detector achieves better performance in terms of both bit error-rate (BER) and achievable rate than existing semi-blind deep learning (DL) detection methods as well as conventional linear detectors, especially when considering signal distortion due to the nonlinearity of power amplifiers (PA) at the transmitter.

Full-Duplex Communication for ISAC: Joint Beamforming and Power Optimization

Beamforming design has been widely investigated for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems with full-duplex (FD) sensing and half-duplex (HD) communication. To achieve higher spectral efficiency, in this paper, we extend existing ISAC beamforming design by considering the FD capability for both radar and communication. Specifically, we consider an ISAC system, where the BS performs target detection and communicates with multiple downlink users and uplink users reusing the same time and frequency resources. We jointly optimize the downlink dual-functional transmit signal and the uplink receive beamformers at the BS and the transmit power at the uplink users. The problems are formulated under two criteria: power consumption minimization and sum rate maximization. The downlink and uplink transmissions are tightly coupled due to both the desired target echo and the undesired interference received at the BS, making the problems challenging. To handle these issues in both cases, we first determine the optimal receive beamformers, which are derived in closed forms with respect to the BS transmit beamforming and the user transmit power, for radar target detection and uplink communications, respectively. Subsequently, we invoke these results to obtain equivalent optimization problems and propose efficient iterative algorithms to solve them by using the techniques of rank relaxation and successive convex approximation (SCA), where the adopted relaxation is proven to be tight. In addition, we consider a special case under the power minimization criterion and propose an alternative low complexity design. Numerical results demonstrate that the optimized FD communication-based ISAC brings tremendous improvements in terms of both power efficiency and spectral efficiency compared to the conventional ISAC with HD communication.

Low Altitude 3-D Coverage Performance Analysis in Cell-Free Distributed Collaborative Massive MIMO Systems

To improve the poor performance of distributed operation and non-scalability of centralized operation in traditional cell-free massive MIMO, we propose a cell-free distributed collaborative (CFDC) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system based on a novel two-layer model to take advantages of the distributed cloud-edge-end collaborative architecture in beyond 5G (B5G) internet of things (IoT) environment to provide strong flexibility and scalability. We further ultilize the proposed CFDC massive MIMO system to support the low altitude three-dimensional (3-D) coverage scenario with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), while accounting for 3-D Rician channel estimation, user-centric association and different scalable receiving schemes. Since coexisted UAVs and ground users (GUEs) cause greater interference, we ultilize user-centric association strategy and minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) channel state information (CSI) estimation to obtain the estimated CSI of UAVs and GUEs. Under the CFDC scenarios, scalable receiving schemes as maximum ratio combing (MRC), partial zero-forcing (P-ZF) and partial minimum-mean-square error (P-MMSE) can be performed at edge servers and the closed-form expressions for uplink spectral efficiency (SE) are derived. Based on the derived expressions, we propose an efficient power control algorithm by solving a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) between maximizing the average SE of UAVs and GUEs simultaneously with Deep Q-Network (DQN). Numerical results verify the accuracy of the derived closed-form expressions and the effectiveness of the coexisted UAVs and GUEs transmission scheme in CFDC massive MIMO systems. The SE analysis under various system parameters offers numerous flexibilities for system optimization.

Approaching Shannon's One-Time Pad: Metrics, Architectures, and Enabling Technologies

The rapid development of advanced computing technologies such as quantum computing imposes new challenges to current wireless security mechanism which is based on cryptographic approaches. To deal with various attacks and realize long-lasting security, we are in urgent need of disruptive security solutions. In this article, novel security transmission paradigms are proposed to approach Shannon's one-time pad perfect secrecy. First, two metrics, termed as Degree-of-Approaching (DoA) and Degree-of-Synchronous-Approaching (DoSA), are developed to characterize the closeness between the achieved security strength and perfect secrecy. These two metrics also serve as a guideline for secure transmission protocol design. After that, we present two paths towards Shannon's one-time pad, i.e., an explicit-encryption based approach and an implicit-encryption based approach. For both of them, we discuss the architecture design, enabling technologies, as well as preliminary performance evaluation results. The techniques presented in this article provide promising security-enhancing solutions for future wireless networks.

Integrated sensing and full-duplex communication: Joint transceiver beamforming and power allocation

Specifically, we consider an ISAC system, where the base station (BS) performs target detection and communicates with multiple downlink users and uplink users reusing the same time and frequency resources. We jointly optimize the downlink dual-functional transmit signal and the uplink receive beamformers at the BS and the transmit power at the uplink users. The problem is formulated to minimize the total transmit power of the system while guaranteeing the communication and sensing requirements. The downlink and uplink transmissions are tightly coupled, making the joint optimization challenging. To handle this issue, we first determine the receive beamformers in closed forms with respect to the BS transmit beamforming and the user transmit power and then suggest an iterative solution to the remaining problem. We demonstrate via numerical results that the optimized FD communication-based ISAC leads to power efficiency improvement compared to conventional ISAC with HD communication.

Network-Assisted Full-Duplex Cell-Free mmWave Massive MIMO Systems with DAC Quantization and Fronthaul Compression

In this paper, we investigate network-assisted full-duplex (NAFD) cell-free millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with digital-to-analog converter (DAC) quantization and fronthaul compression. We propose to maximize the weighted uplink and downlink sum rate by jointly optimizing the power allocation of both the transmitting remote antenna units (T-RAUs) and uplink users and the variances of the downlink and uplink fronthaul compression noises. To deal with this challenging problem, we further apply a successive convex approximation (SCA) method to handle the non-convex bidirectional limited-capacity fronthaul constraints. The simulation results verify the convergence of the proposed SCA-based algorithm and analyze the impact of fronthaul capacity and DAC quantization on the spectral efficiency of the NAFD cell-free mmWave massive MIMO systems. Moreover, some insightful conclusions are obtained through the comparisons of spectral efficiency, which shows that NAFD achieves better performance gains than co-time co-frequency full-duplex cloud radio access network (CCFD C-RAN) in the cases of practical limited-resolution DACs. Specifically, their performance gaps with 8-bit DAC quantization are larger than that with 1-bit DAC quantization, which attains a 5.5-fold improvement.

Spectral Efficiency and Scalability Analysis for Multi-Level Cooperative Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

This paper proposes a multi-level cooperative architecture to balance the spectral efficiency and scalability of cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In the proposed architecture, spatial expansion units (SEUs) are introduced to avoid a large amount of computation at the access points (APs) and increase the degree of cooperation among APs. We first derive the closed-form expressions of the uplink user achievable rates under multi-level cooperative architecture with maximal ratio combination (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers. The accuracy of the closed-form expressions is verified. Moreover, numerical results have demonstrated that the proposed multi-level cooperative architecture achieves a better trade-off between spectral efficiency and scalability than other forms of cell-free massive MIMO architectures.

From ORAN to Cell-Free RAN: Architecture, Performance Analysis, Testbeds and Trials

Open radio access network (ORAN) provides an open architecture to implement radio access network (RAN) of the fifth generation (5G) and beyond mobile communications. As a key technology for the evolution to the sixth generation (6G) systems, cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) can effectively improve the spectrum efficiency, peak rate and reliability of wireless communication systems. Starting from scalable implementation of CF-mMIMO, we study a cell-free RAN (CF-RAN) under the ORAN architecture. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, we investigate the uplink and downlink spectral efficiencies of CF-mMIMO with the new architecture. We then discuss the implementation issues of CF-RAN under ORAN architecture, including time-frequency synchronization and over-the-air reciprocity calibration, low layer splitting, deployment of ORAN radio units (O-RU), artificial intelligent based user associations. Finally, we present some representative experimental results for the uplink distributed reception and downlink coherent joint transmission of CF-RAN with commercial off-the-shelf O-RUs.

Link-level simulator for 5G localization

Channel-state-information-based localization in 5G networks has been a promising way to obtain highly accurate positions compared to previous communication networks. However, there is no unified and effective platform to support the research on 5G localization algorithms. This paper releases a link-level simulator for 5G localization, which can depict realistic physical behaviors of the 5G positioning signal transmission. Specifically, we first develop a simulation architecture considering more elaborate parameter configuration and physical-layer processing. The architecture supports the link modeling at sub-6GHz and millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands. Subsequently, the critical physical-layer components that determine the localization performance are designed and integrated. In particular, a lightweight new-radio channel model and hardware impairment functions that significantly limit the parameter estimation accuracy are developed. Finally, we present three application cases to evaluate the simulator, i.e. two-dimensional mobile terminal localization, mmWave beam sweeping, and beamforming-based angle estimation. The numerical results in the application cases present the performance diversity of localization algorithms in various impairment conditions.

Performance Analysis and Optimization of Network-Assisted Full-Duplex Systems under Low-Resolution ADCs

Network-assisted full-duplex (NAFD) distributed massive multiple input multiple output (M-MIMO) enables the in-band full-duplex with existing half-duplex devices at the network level, which exceptionally improves spectral efficiency. This paper analyzes the impact of low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) on NAFD distributed M-MIMO and designs an efficient bit allocation algorithm for low-resolution ADCs. The beamforming training mechanism relieves the heavy pilot overhead for channel estimation, which remarkably enhances system performance by guiding the interference cancellation and coherence detection. Furthermore, closed-form expressions for spectral and energy efficiency with low-resolution ADCs are derived. The multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) for spectral and energy efficiency is solved by the deep Q network and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II. The simulation results corroborate the theoretical derivation and verify the effectiveness of introducing low-resolution ADCs in NAFD distributed M-MIMO systems. Meanwhile, a set of Pareto-optimal solutions for ADC accuracy flexibly provide guidelines for deploying in a practical NAFD distributed M-MIMO system.

A Universal Framework of Superimposed RIS-Phase Modulation for MISO Communication

To fully exploit the additional dimension brought by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), it is recently suggested by information theory that modulating information upon RIS phases is able to send extra information with increased communication rate. In this paper, we propose a novel superimposed RIS-phase modulation (SRPM) scheme to transfer extra messages by superimposing information-bearing phase offsets to conventionally optimized RIS phases. The proposed SRPM is interpreted as a universal framework for RIS phase modulation. Theoretical union bound of the average bit error rate (ABER) of the proposed SRPM is also derived with the maximum likelihood (ML) detection. The diversity order is characterized as 0.5 for all parameter settings, which is useful for determining the optimal choice of the phase modulation parameters. Furthermore, we discover that doubling the number of either RIS reflecting elements or the transmit antennas is equivalent to a 3 dB increment in the transmit power for SRPM. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of SRPM and reveal that it achieves reliable communication of more bits than existing schemes.

Toward 6G TK$μ$ Extreme Connectivity: Architecture, Key Technologies and Experiments

Sixth-generation (6G) networks are evolving towards new features and order-of-magnitude enhancement of systematic performance metrics compared to the current 5G. In particular, the 6G networks are expected to achieve extreme connectivity performance with Tbps-scale data rate, Kbps/Hz-scale spectral efficiency, and $μ$s-scale latency. To this end, an original three-layer 6G network architecture is designed to realise uniform full-spectrum cell-free radio access and provide task-centric agile proximate support for diverse applications. The designed architecture is featured by super edge node (SEN) which integrates connectivity, computing, AI, data, etc. On this basis, a technological framework of pervasive multi-level (PML) AI is established in the centralised unit to enable task-centric near-real-time resource allocation and network automation. We then introduce a radio access network (RAN) architecture of full spectrum uniform cell-free networks, which is among the most attractive RAN candidates for 6G TK$μ$ extreme connectivity. A few most promising key technologies, i.e., cell-free massive MIMO, photonics-assisted Terahertz wireless access and spatiotemporal two-dimensional channel coding are further discussed. A testbed is implemented and extensive trials are conducted to evaluate innovative technologies and methodologies. The proposed 6G network architecture and technological framework demonstrate exciting potentials for full-service and full-scenario applications.

Experimental Performance Evaluation of Cell-free Massive MIMO Systems Using COTS RRU with OTA Reciprocity Calibration and Phase Synchronization

Downlink coherent multiuser transmission is an essential technique for cell-free massive multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems, and the availability of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is a basic requirement. To avoid CSI feedback in a time-division duplex system, the uplink channel parameters should be calibrated to obtain the downlink CSI due to the radio frequency circuit mismatch of the transceiver. In this paper, a design of a reference signal for over-the-air reciprocity calibration is proposed. The frequency domain generated reference signals can make full use of the flexible frame structure of the fifth generation (5G) new radio, which can be completely transparent to commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) remote radio units (RRUs) and commercial user equipments. To further obtain the calibration of multiple RRUs, an interleaved RRU grouping with a genetic algorithm is proposed, and an averaged Argos calibration algorithm is also presented. We develop a cell-free massive MIMO prototype system with COTS RRUs, demonstrate the statistical characteristics of the calibration error and the effectiveness of the calibration algorithm, and evaluate the impact of the calibration delay on the different cooperative transmission schemes.

Automatic Hybrid-Precision Quantization for MIMO Detectors

In the design of wireless systems, quantization plays a critical role in hardware, which directly affects both area efficiency and energy efficiency. Being an enabling technique, the wide applications of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) heavily relies on efficient implementations balancing both performance and complexity. However, most of the existing detectors uniformly quantize all variables, resulting in high redundancy and low flexibility. Requiring both expertise and efforts, an in-depth tailored quantization usually asks for prohibitive costs and is not considered by conventional MIMO detectors. In this paper, a general framework named the automatic hybrid-precision quantization (AHPQ) is proposed with two parts: integral quantization determined by probability density function (PDF), and fractional quantization by deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Being automatic, AHPQ demonstrates high efficiency in figuring out good quantizations for a set of algorithmic parameters. For the approximate message passing (AMP) detector, AHPQ achieves up to $58.7\%$ lower average bitwidth than the unified quantization (UQ) one with almost no performance sacrifice. The feasibility of AHPQ has been verified by implementation with $65$ nm CMOS technology. Compared with its UQ counterpart, AHPQ exhibits $2.97\times$ higher throughput-to-area ratio (TAR) with $19.3\%$ lower energy dissipation. Moreover, by node compression and strength reduction, the AHPQ detector outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOA) in both throughput ($17.92$ Gb/s) and energy efficiency ($7.93$ pJ/b). The proposed AHPQ framework is also applicable for other digital signal processing algorithms.

Social-aware Cooperative Caching in Fog Radio Access Networks

In this paper, the cooperative caching problem in fog radio access networks (F-RANs) is investigated to jointly optimize the transmission delay and energy consumption. Exploiting the potential social relationships among fog access points (F-APs), we firstly propose a clustering scheme based on hedonic coalition game (HCG) to improve the potential cooperation gain. Then, considering that the optimization problem is non-deterministic polynomial hard (NP-hard), we further propose an improved firefly algorithm (FA) based cooperative caching scheme, which utilizes a mutation strategy based on local content popularity to avoid pre-mature convergence. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can effectively reduce the content transmission delay and energy consumption in comparison with the baselines.
