Low-Complexity Channel Estimation for Extremely Large-Scale MIMO in Near Field

The extremely large-scale massive multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) has the potential to achieve boosted spectral efficiency and refined spatial resolution for future wireless networks. However, channel estimation for XL-MIMO is challenging since the large number of antennas results in high computational complexity with the near-field effect. In this letter, we propose a low-complexity sequential angle-distance channel estimation (SADCE) method for near-field XL-MIMO systems equipped with uniformly planar arrays (UPA). Specifically, we first successfully decouple the angle and distance parameters, which allows us to devise a two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2D-DFT) method for angle parameters estimation. Then, a low-complexity distance estimation method is proposed with a closed-form solution. Compared with existing methods, the proposed method achieves significant performance gain with noticeably reduced computational complexity.Numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed near-field channel estimation algorithm.

Digital Twin-Enhanced Deep Reinforcement Learning for Resource Management in Networks Slicing

Network slicing-based communication systems can dynamically and efficiently allocate resources for diversified services. However, due to the limitation of the network interface on channel access and the complexity of the resource allocation, it is challenging to achieve an acceptable solution in the practical system without precise prior knowledge of the dynamics probability model of the service requests. Existing work attempts to solve this problem using deep reinforcement learning (DRL), however, such methods usually require a lot of interaction with the real environment in order to achieve good results. In this paper, a framework consisting of a digital twin and reinforcement learning agents is present to handle the issue. Specifically, we propose to use the historical data and the neural networks to build a digital twin model to simulate the state variation law of the real environment. Then, we use the data generated by the network slicing environment to calibrate the digital twin so that it is in sync with the real environment. Finally, DRL for slice optimization optimizes its own performance in this virtual pre-verification environment. We conducted an exhaustive verification of the proposed digital twin framework to confirm its scalability. Specifically, we propose to use loss landscapes to visualize the generalization of DRL solutions. We explore a distillation-based optimization scheme for lightweight slicing strategies. In addition, we also extend the framework to offline reinforcement learning, where solutions can be used to obtain intelligent decisions based solely on historical data. Numerical simulation experiments show that the proposed digital twin can significantly improve the performance of the slice optimization strategy.

Digital Twin Assisted Deep Reinforcement Learning for Online Admission Control in Sliced Network

The proliferation of diverse wireless services in 5G and beyond has led to the emergence of network slicing technologies. Among these, admission control plays a crucial role in achieving service-oriented optimization goals through the selective acceptance of service requests. Although deep reinforcement learning (DRL) forms the foundation in many admission control approaches thanks to its effectiveness and flexibility, initial instability with excessive convergence delay of DRL models hinders their deployment in real-world networks. We propose a digital twin (DT) accelerated DRL solution to address this issue. Specifically, we first formulate the admission decision-making process as a semi-Markov decision process, which is subsequently simplified into an equivalent discrete-time Markov decision process to facilitate the implementation of DRL methods. A neural network-based DT is established with a customized output layer for queuing systems, trained through supervised learning, and then employed to assist the training phase of the DRL model. Extensive simulations show that the DT-accelerated DRL improves resource utilization by over 40% compared to the directly trained state-of-the-art dueling deep Q-learning model. This improvement is achieved while preserving the model's capability to optimize the long-term rewards of the admission process.

Integrated Sensing and Communication for Network-Assisted Full-Duplex Cell-Free Distributed Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we combine the network-assisted full-duplex (NAFD) technology and distributed radar sensing to implement integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). The ISAC system features both uplink and downlink remote radio units (RRUs) equipped with communication and sensing capabilities. We evaluate the communication and sensing performance of the system using the sum communication rates and the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB), respectively. We compare the performance of the proposed scheme with other ISAC schemes, the result shows that the proposed scheme can provide more stable sensing and better communication performance. Furthermore, we propose two power allocation algorithms to optimize the communication and sensing performance jointly. One algorithm is based on the deep Q-network (DQN) and the other one is based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). The proposed algorithms provide more feasible solutions and achieve better system performance than the equal power allocation algorithm.

Deep Learning-Based Modeling of 5G Core Control Plane for 5G Network Digital Twin

Digital twin serves as a crucial facilitator in the advancement and implementation of emerging technologies within 5G and beyond networks. However, the intricate structure and diverse functionalities of the existing 5G core network, especially the control plane, present challenges in constructing core network digital twins. In this paper, we propose two novel data-driven architectures for modeling the 5G control plane and implement corresponding deep learning models, namely 5GC-Seq2Seq and 5GC-former, based on the Vanilla Seq2Seq model and Transformer decoder respectively. We also present a solution enabling the interconversion of signaling messages and length-limited vectors to construct a dataset. The experiments are based on 5G core network signaling messages collected by the Spirent C50 network tester, encompassing various procedures such as registration, handover, and PDU sessions. The results show that 5GC-Seq2Seq achieves a 99.997\% F1-score (a metric measuring the accuracy of positive samples) in single UE scenarios with a simple structure, but exhibits significantly reduced performance in handling concurrency. In contrast, 5GC-former surpasses 99.999\% F1-score while maintaining robust performance under concurrent UE scenarios by constructing a more complex and highly parallel model. These findings validate that our method accurately replicates the principal functionalities of the 5G core network control plane.

Performance Analysis and Low-Complexity Design for XL-MIMO with Near-Field Spatial Non-Stationarities

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is capable of supporting extremely high system capacities with large numbers of users. In this work, we build a framework for the analysis and low-complexity design of XL-MIMO in the near field with spatial non-stationarities. Specifically, we first analyze the theoretical performance of discrete-aperture XL-MIMO using an electromagnetic (EM) channel model based on the near-field spherical wavefront. We analytically reveal the impact of the discrete aperture and polarization mismatch on the received power. We also complement the classical Fraunhofer distance based on the considered EM channel model. Our analytical results indicate that a limited part of the XL-array receives the majority of the signal power in the near field, which leads to a notion of visibility region (VR) of a user. Thus, we propose a VR detection algorithm and leverage the acquired VR information to devise a low-complexity symbol detection scheme. Furthermore, we propose a graph theory-based user partition algorithm, relying on the VR overlap ratio between different users. Partial zero-forcing (PZF) is utilized to eliminate only the interference from users allocated to the same group, which further reduces computational complexity in matrix inversion. Numerical results confirm the correctness of the analytical results and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. It reveals that our algorithms approach the performance of conventional whole array (WA)-based designs but with much lower complexity.

Statistical CSI Based Beamforming for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided MISO Systems with Channel Correlation

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising candidate technology of the upcoming Sixth Generation (6G) communication system for its ability to provide unprecedented spectral and energy efficiency increment through passive beamforming. However, it is challenging to obtain instantaneous channel state information (I-CSI) for RIS, which obliges us to use statistical channel state information (S-CSI) to achieve passive beamforming. In this paper, RIS-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) multi-user downlink communication system with correlated channels is investigated. Then, we formulate the problem of joint beamforming design at the AP and RIS to maximize the sum ergodic spectral efficiency (ESE) of all users to improve the network capacity. Since it is too hard to compute sum ESE, an ESE approximation is adopted to reformulate the problem into a more tractable form. Then, we present two joint beamforming algorithms, namely the singular value decomposition-gradient descent (SVD-GD) algorithm and the fractional programming-gradient descent (FP-GD) algorithm. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms and validate that 2-bits quantizer is enough for RIS phase shifts implementation.

Channel Estimation for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Multiuser Communication Systems Exploiting Statistical CSI of Correlated RIS-User Channels

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising candidate technology for the upcoming Sixth Generation (6G) communication system for its ability to manipulate the wireless communication environment by controlling the coefficients of reflection elements (REs). However, since the RIS usually consists of a large number of passive REs, the pilot overhead for channel estimation in the RIS-aided system is prohibitively high. In this paper, the channel estimation problem for a RIS-aided multi-user multiple-input-single-output (MISO) communication system with clustered users is investigated. First, to describe the correlated feature for RIS-user channels, a beam domain channel model is developed for RIS-user channels. Then, a pilot reuse strategy is put forward to reduce the pilot overhead and decompose the channel estimation problem into several subproblems. Finally, by leveraging the correlated nature of RIS-user channels, an eigenspace projection (EP) algorithm is proposed to solve each subproblem respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed EP channel estimation scheme can achieve accurate channel estimation with lower pilot overhead than existing schemes.

Differential Modulation for Short Packet Transmission in URLLC

One key feature of ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) in 5G is to support short packet transmission (SPT). However, the pilot overhead in SPT for channel estimation is relatively high, especially in high Doppler environments. In this paper, we advocate the adoption of differential modulation to support ultra-low latency services, which can ease the channel estimation burden and reduce the power and bandwidth overhead incurred in traditional coherent modulation schemes. Specifically, we consider a multi-connectivity (MC) scheme employing differential modulation to enable URLLC services. The popular selection combining and maximal ratio combining schemes are respectively applied to explore the diversity gain in the MC scheme. A first-order autoregressive model is further utilized to characterize the time-varying nature of the channel. Theoretically, the maximum achievable rate and minimum achievable block error rate under ergodic fading channels with PSK inputs and perfect CSI are first derived by using the non-asymptotic information-theoretic bounds. The performance of SPT with differential modulation and MC schemes is then analysed by characterizing the effect of differential modulation and time-varying channels as a reduction in the effective SNR. Simulation results show that differential modulation does offer a significant advantage over the pilot-assisted coherent scheme for SPT, especially in high Doppler environments.

Superimposed RIS-phase Modulation for MIMO Communications: A Novel Paradigm of Information Transfer

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is regarded as an important enabling technology for the sixth-generation (6G) network. Recently, modulating information in reflection patterns of RIS, referred to as reflection modulation (RM), has been proven in theory to have the potential of achieving higher transmission rate than existing passive beamforming (PBF) schemes of RIS. To fully unlock this potential of RM, we propose a novel superimposed RIS-phase modulation (SRPM) scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where tunable phase offsets are superimposed onto predetermined RIS phases to bear extra information messages. The proposed SRPM establishes a universal framework for RM, which retrieves various existing RM-based schemes as special cases. Moreover, the advantages and applicability of the SRPM in practice is also validated in theory by analytical characterization of its performance in terms of average bit error rate (ABER) and ergodic capacity. To maximize the performance gain, we formulate a general precoding optimization at the base station (BS) for a single-stream case with uncorrelated channels and obtain the optimal SRPM design via the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. Furthermore, to avoid extremely high complexity in maximum likelihood (ML) detection for the SRPM, we propose a sphere decoding (SD)-based layered detection method with near-ML performance and much lower complexity. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of SRPM, precoding optimization, and detection design. It is verified that the proposed SRPM achieves a higher diversity order than that of existing RM-based schemes and outperforms PBF significantly especially when the transmitter is equipped with limited radio-frequency (RF) chains.

Machine-learning-aided Massive Hybrid Analog and Digital MIMO DOA Estimation for Future Wireless Networks

Due to a high spatial angle resolution and low circuit cost of massive hybrid analog and digital (HAD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), it is viewed as a valuable green communication technology for future wireless networks. Combining a massive HAD-MIMO with direction of arrival (DOA) will provide a high-precision even ultra-high-precision DOA measurement performance approaching the fully-digital (FD) MIMO. However, phase ambiguity is a challenge issue for a massive HAD-MIMO DOA estimation. In this paper, we review three aspects: detection, estimation, and Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) with low-resolution ADCs at receiver. First, a multi-layer-neural-network (MLNN) detector is proposed to infer the existence of passive emitters. Then, a two-layer HAD (TLHAD) MIMO structure is proposed to eliminate phase ambiguity using only one-snapshot. Simulation results show that the proposed MLNN detector is much better than both the existing generalized likelihood ratio test (GRLT) and the ratio of maximum eigen-value (Max-EV) to minimum eigen-value (R-MaxEV-MinEV) in terms of detection probability. Additionally, the proposed TLHAD structure can achieve the corresponding CRLB using single snapshot.

Two-Timescale Transmission Design for RIS-Aided Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

This paper investigates the performance of a two-timescale transmission design for uplink reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) systems. We consider the Rician channel model and design the passive beamforming of RISs based on the long-time statistical channel state information (CSI), while the central processing unit (CPU) utilizes the maximum ratio combining (MRC) technology to perform fully centralized processing based on the instantaneous overall channel, which are the superposition of the direct and RIS-reflected channels. Firstly, we derive the closed-form approximate expression of the uplink achievable rate for arbitrary numbers of access point (AP) antennas and RIS reflecting elements. Relying on the derived expressions, we theoretically analyze the benefits of deploying RIS into cell-free mMIMO systems and draw explicit insights. Then, based on the closed-form approximate rate expression under statistical CSI, we optimize the phase shifts of RISs based on the genetic algorithm (GA) to maximize the sum rate and minimum rate of users, respectively. Finally, the numerical results demonstrate the correctness of our derived expressions and the benefits of deploying large-size RISs into cell-free mMIMO systems. Also, we investigate the optimality and convergence behaviors of the GA to verify its effectiveness. To give more beneficial analysis, we give the closed-form expression of the energy efficiency and present numerical results to show the high energy efficiency of the system with the help of RISs. Besides, our results have revealed the benefits of distributed deployment of APs and RISs in the RIS-aided mMIMO system with cell-free networks.

Imperfect CSI: A Key Factor of Uncertainty to Over-the-Air Federated Learning

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) has recently been identified as a prominent technique to enhance communication efficiency of wireless federated learning (FL). This letter investigates the impact of channel state information (CSI) uncertainty at the transmitter on an AirComp enabled FL (AirFL) system with the truncated channel inversion strategy. To characterize the performance of the AirFL system, the weight divergence with respect to the ideal aggregation is analytically derived to evaluate learning performance loss. We explicitly reveal that the weight divergence deteriorates as $\mathcal{O}(1/ρ^2)$ as the level of channel estimation accuracy $ρ$ vanishes, and also has a decay rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/K^2)$ with the increasing number of participating devices, $K$. Building upon our analytical results, we formulate the channel truncation threshold optimization problem to adapt to different $ρ$, which can be solved optimally. Numerical results verify the analytical results and show that a lower truncation threshold is preferred with more accurate CSI.

Closed-form Approximation for Performance Bound of Finite Blocklength Massive MIMO Transmission

Ultra-reliable low latency communications (uRLLC) is adopted in the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks to better support mission-critical applications that demand high level of reliability and low latency. With the aid of well-established multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) information theory, uRLLC in the future 6G is expected to provide enhanced capability towards extreme connectivity. Since the latency constraint can be represented equivalently by blocklength, channel coding theory at finite block-length plays an important role in the theoretic analysis of uRLLC. On the basis of Polyanskiy's and Yang's asymptotic results, we first derive the exact close-form expressions for the expectation and variance of channel dispersion. Then, the bound of average maximal achievable rate is given for massive MIMO systems in ideal independent and identically distributed fading channels. This is the study to reveal the underlying connections among the fundamental parameters in MIMO transmissions in a concise and complete close-form formula. Most importantly, the inversely proportional law observed therein implies that the latency can be further reduced at expense of spatial degrees of freedom.

Dual-Propagation-Feature Fusion Enhanced Neural CSI Compression for Massive MIMO

Due to the ability of feature extraction, deep learning (DL)-based methods have been recently applied to channel state information (CSI) compression feedback in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Existing DL-based CSI compression methods are usually effective in extracting a certain type of features in the CSI. However, the CSI usually contains two types of propagation features, i.g., non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation-path feature and dominant propagation-path feature, especially in channel environments with rich scatterers. To fully extract the both propagation features and learn a dual-feature representation for CSI, this paper proposes a dual-feature-fusion neural network (NN), referred to as DuffinNet. The proposed DuffinNet adopts a parallel structure with a convolutional neural network (CNN) and an attention-empowered neural network (ANN) to respectively extract different features in the CSI, and then explores their interplay by a fusion NN. Built upon this proposed DuffinNet, a new encoder-decoder framework is developed, referred to as Duffin-CsiNet, for improving the end-to-end performance of CSI compression and reconstruction. To facilitate the application of Duffin-CsiNet in practice, this paper also presents a two-stage approach for codeword quantization of the CSI feedback. Besides, a transfer learning-based strategy is introduced to improve the generalization of Duffin-CsiNet, which enables the network to be applied to new propagation environments. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed Duffin-CsiNet noticeably outperforms the existing DL-based methods in terms of reconstruction performance, encoder complexity, and network convergence, validating the effectiveness of the proposed dual-feature fusion design.

Joint Precoding Design and Resource Allocation for C-RAN Wireless Fronthaul Systems

This paper investigates the resource allocation problem combined with fronthaul precoding and access link sparse precoding design in cloud radio access network (C-RAN) wireless fronthaul systems.Multiple remote antenna units (RAUs) in C-RAN systems can collaborate in a cluster through centralized signal processing to realize distributed massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems and obtain performance gains such as spectrum efficiency and coverage.Wireless fronthaul is a flexible, low-cost way to implement C-RAN systems, however, compared with the fiber fronthaul network, the capacity of wireless fronthaul is extremely limited.Based on this problem, this paper first design the fronthaul and access link precoding to make the fronthaul capacity of RAUs match the access link demand. Then, combined with the precoding design problem, the allocation optimization of orthogonal resources is studied to further optimize the resource allocation between fronthaul link and access link to improve the performance of the system.Numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed precoding design and resource allocation optimization algorithm.

Resource Allocation in Cell-Free MU-MIMO Multicarrier System with Finite and Infinite Blocklength

The explosive growth of data results in more scarce spectrum resources. It is important to optimize the system performance under limited resources. In this paper, we investigate how to achieve weighted throughput (WTP) maximization for cell-free (CF) multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) multicarrier (MC) systems through resource allocation (RA), in the cases of finite blocklength (FBL) and infinite blocklength (INFBL) regimes. To ensure the quality of service (QoS) of each user, particularly for the block error rate (BLER) and latency in the FBL regime, the WTP gets maximized under the constraints of total power consumption and required QoS metrics. Since the channels vary in different subcarriers (SCs) and inter-user interference strengths, the WTP can be maximized by scheduling the best users in each time-frequency (TF) resource and advanced beamforming design, while the resources can be fully utilized. With this motivation, we propose a joint user scheduling (US) and beamforming design algorithm based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) and gene-aided (GA) algorithms, to address a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed RA outperforms the comparison schemes. And the CF system in our scenario is capable of achieving higher spectral efficiency than the centralized antenna systems (CAS).

Joint Uplink and Downlink Resource Allocation Towards Energy-efficient Transmission for URLLC

Ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) is firstly proposed in 5G networks, and expected to support applications with the most stringent quality-of-service (QoS). However, since the wireless channels vary dynamically, the transmit power for ensuring the QoS requirements of URLLC may be very high, which conflicts with the power limitation of a real system. To fulfill the successful URLLC transmission with finite transmit power, we propose an energy-efficient packet delivery mechanism incorparated with frequency-hopping and proactive dropping in this paper. To reduce uplink outage probability, frequency-hopping provides more chances for transmission so that the failure hardly occurs. To avoid downlink outage from queue clearing, proactive dropping controls overall reliability by introducing an extra error component. With the proposed packet delivery mechanism, we jointly optimize bandwidth allocation and power control of uplink and downlink, antenna configuration, and subchannel assignment to minimize the average total power under the constraint of URLLC transmission requirements. Via theoretical analysis (e.g., the convexity with respect to bandwidth, the independence of bandwidth allocation, the convexity of antenna configuration with inactive constraints), the simplication of finding the global optimal solution for resource allocation is addressed. A three-step method is then proposed to find the optimal solution for resource allocation. Simulation results validate the analysis and show the performance gain by optimizing resource allocation with the proposed packet delivery mechanism.
