Fast computation of Tukey trimmed regions and median in dimension $p>2$

Given data in $\mathbb{R}^{p}$, a Tukey $κ$-trimmed region is the set of all points that have at least Tukey depth $κ$ w.r.t. the data. As they are visual, affine equivariant and robust, Tukey regions are useful tools in nonparametric multivariate analysis. While these regions are easily defined and interpreted, their practical use in applications has been impeded so far by the lack of efficient computational procedures in dimension $p > 2$. We construct two novel algorithms to compute a Tukey $κ$-trimmed region, a naïve one and a more sophisticated one that is much faster than known algorithms. Further, a strict bound on the number of facets of a Tukey region is derived. In a large simulation study the novel fast algorithm is compared with the naïve one, which is slower and by construction exact, yielding in every case the same correct results. Finally, the approach is extended to an algorithm that calculates the innermost Tukey region and its barycenter, the Tukey median.

The groomed and ungroomed jet mass distribution for inclusive jet production at the LHC

We study jet mass distributions measured in the single inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions $pp\to \text{jet}+X$ at the LHC. We consider both standard ungroomed jets as well as soft drop groomed jets. Within the Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), we establish QCD factorization theorems for both cases and we study their relation. The developed framework allows for the joint resummation of several classes of logarithmic corrections to all orders in the strong coupling constant. For the ungroomed case, we resum logarithms in the jet radius parameter and in the small jet mass. For the groomed case, we resum in addition the logarithms in the soft threshold parameter $z_{\text{cut}}$ which is introduced by the soft drop grooming algorithm. In this way, we are able to reliably determine the absolute normalization of the groomed jet mass distribution in proton-proton collisions. All logarithmic corrections are resummed to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present numerical results and compare with the available data from the LHC. For both the groomed and ungroomed jet mass distributions we find very good agreement after including non-perturbative corrections.

Threshold and jet radius joint resummation for single-inclusive jet production

The QCD predictions for single-inclusive jet production are computed with joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. The results are compared to those based on fixed order perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order and to data by the CMS collaboration measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{S}=8$ TeV. The joint resummation results are in remarkable agreement with the data.

Inclusive $h_c$ production and energy spectrum from $e^+ e^-$ annihilation at Super $B$ factory

We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) radiative correction to the color-octet $h_c$ inclusive production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at Super $B$ factory, within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization framework. The analytic expression for the NLO short-distance coefficient (SDC) accompanying the color-octet production operator $\mathcal{O}_8^{h_c}(^1S_0)$ is obtained after summing both virtual and real corrections. The size of NLO correction for the color-octet production channel is found to be positive and substantial. The NLO prediction to the $h_c$ energy spectrum is plagued with unphysical endpoint singularity. With the aid of the soft-collinear effective theory, those large endpoint logarithms are resummed to the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. Consequently, further supplemented with the non-perturbative shape function, we obtain the well-behaved predictions for the $h_c$ energy spectrum in the entire kinematic range, which awaits the examination by the forthcoming Belle II experiment.

Limit theory for an AR(1) model with intercept and a possible infinite variance

In this paper, we derive the limit distribution of the least squares estimator for an AR(1) model with a non-zero intercept and a possible infinite variance. It turns out that the estimator has a quite different limit for the cases of $|ρ| < 1$, $|ρ| > 1$, and $ρ= 1 + \frac{c}{n^α}$ for some constant $c \in R$ and $α\in (0, 1]$, and whether or not the variance of the model errors is infinite also has a great impact on both the convergence rate and the limit distribution of the estimator.

Bahadur representations for the bootstrap median absolute deviation and the application to projection depth weighted mean

Median absolute deviation (hereafter MAD) is known as a robust alternative to the ordinary variance. It has been widely utilized to induce robust statistical inferential procedures. In this paper, we investigate the strong and weak Bahadur representations of its bootstrap counterpart. As a useful application, we utilize the results to derive the weak Bahadur representation of the bootstrap sample projection depth weighted mean---a quite important location estimator depending on MAD.

Phenomenology of single-inclusive jet production with jet radius and threshold resummation

We perform a detailed study of inclusive jet production cross sections at the LHC and compare the QCD theory predictions based on the recently developed formalism for threshold and jet radius joint resummation at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy to inclusive jet data collected by the CMS collaboration at $\sqrt{S} = 7$ and $13$TeV. We compute the cross sections at next-to-leading order in QCD with and without the joint resummation for different choices of jet radii $R$ and observe that the joint resummation leads to crucial improvements in the description of the data. Comprehensive studies with different parton distribution functions demonstrate the necessity of considering the joint resummation in fits of those functions based on the LHC jet data.

Threshold and jet radius joint resummation for single-inclusive jet production

We present the first threshold and jet radius jointly resummed cross section for single-inclusive hadronic jet production. We work at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and our framework allows for a systematic extension beyond the currently achieved precision. Longstanding numerical issues are overcome by performing the resummation directly in momentum space within Soft Collinear Effective Theory. We present the first numerical results for the LHC and observe an improved description of the available data. Our results are of immediate relevance for LHC precision phenomenology including the extraction of parton distribution functions and the QCD strong coupling constant.

The transverse momentum distribution of hadrons within jets

We study the transverse momentum distribution of hadrons within jets, where the transverse momentum is defined with respect to the standard jet axis. We consider the case where the jet substructure measurement is performed for an inclusive jet sample $pp\to\text{jet}+X$. We demonstrate that this observable provides new opportunities to study transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) which are currently poorly constrained from data, especially for gluons. The factorization of the cross section is obtained within Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), and we show that the relevant TMDFFs are the same as for the more traditional processes semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and electron-positron annihilation. Different than in SIDIS, the observable for the in-jet fragmentation does not depend on TMD parton distribution functions which allows for a cleaner and more direct probe of TMDFFs. We present numerical results and compare to available data from the LHC.

A new class of $L_q$-norm zonoid depths

Zonoid depth, as a well-known ordering tool, has been widely used in multivariate analysis. However, since its depth value vanishes outside the convex hull of the data cloud, it suffers from the so-called `outside problem', which consequently hinders its many practical applications, e.g., classification. In this note, we propose a new class of \emph{$L_q$-norm zonoid depths}, which has no such problem. Examples are also provided to illustrate their contours.

On similarity of the sample depth contours

In this paper, we investigate the similarity property of the sample projection depth contours. It turns out that some of these contours are of \emph{the same shape} with different sizes, following a similar fashion to the Mahalanobis depth contours. One advantage of this investigation is the potential of bringing convenience to the computation of the projection depth contours; the other one is that we may utilize this idea to extend both the halfspace depth and zonoid depth to versions that do not vanish outside the convex hull of the data cloud, aiming at overcoming the so-called `outside problem'. Examples are also provided to illustrate the main results.

General notions of regression depth function

As a measure for the centrality of a point in a set of multivariate data, statistical depth functions play important roles in multivariate analysis, because one may conveniently construct descriptive as well as inferential procedures relying on them. Many depth notions have been proposed in the literature to fit to different applications. However, most of them are mainly developed for the location setting. In this paper, we discuss the possibility of extending some of them into the regression setting. A general concept of regression depth function is also provided.

Polarization-controlled modulation doping of a ferroelectric from first principles

In a ferroelectric field effect transistor (FeFET), it is generally assumed that the ferroelectric gate plays a purely electrostatic role. Recently it has been shown that in some cases, which could be called 'active FeFETs', electronic states in the ferroelectric contribute to the device conductance as the result of a modulation doping effect in which carriers are transferred from the channel into the ferroelectric layers near the interface. Here we report first-principles calculations and model analysis to elucidate the various aspects of this mechanism and to provide guidance in materials choices and interface termination for optimizing the on-off ratio, using BaTiO3/n-SrTiO3 and PbTiO3/n-SrTiO3 as prototypical systems. It is shown that the modulation doping is substantial in both cases, and that extension of an electrostatic model developed in previous work provides a good description of the transferred charge distribution. This model can be used to suggest additional materials heterostructures for the design of active FeFETs.

First-principles molecular dynamics study of deuterium diffusion in liquid tin

Understanding the retention of hydrogen isotopes in liquid metals, such as lithium and tin, is of great importance in designing a liquid plasma-facing component in fusion reactors. However, experimental diffusivity data of hydrogen isotopes in liquid metals are still limited or controversial. We employ first-principles molecular dynamics simulations to predict diffusion coefficients of deuterium in liquid tin at temperatures ranging from 573 to 1673 K. Our simulations indicate faster diffusion of deuterium in liquid tin than the self-diffusivity of tin. In addition, we find that the structural and dynamic properties of tin are insensitive to the inserted deuterium at temperatures and concentrations considered. We also observe that tin and deuterium do not form stable solid compounds. These predicted results from simulations enable us to have a better understanding of the retention of hydrogen isotopes in liquid tin.

Power Corrections in the N-jettiness Subtraction Scheme

We discuss the leading-logarithmic power corrections in the $N$-jettiness subtraction scheme for higher-order perturbative QCD calculations. We compute the next-to-leading order power corrections for an arbitrary $N$-jet process, and we explicitly calculate the power correction through next-to-next-to-leading order for color-singlet production for both $q\bar{q}$ and $gg$ initiated processes. Our results are compact and simple to implement numerically. Including the leading power correction in the $N$-jettiness subtraction scheme substantially improves its numerical efficiency. We discuss what features of our techniques extend to processes containing final-state jets.

W-boson plus jet differential distributions at NNLO in QCD

We present a detailed phenomenological study of W-boson production in association with a jet through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. Fiducial cross sections and differential distributions for both 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC collisions are presented, as are results for both the inclusive one-jet bin and the exclusive one-jet bin. Two different event selection criteria are considered: a general selection with standard cuts used in experimental analyses, and a boosted selection that focuses on high transverse momentum jets. We discuss the higher-order corrections in detail and identify for which observables and phase space regions the QCD perturbative expansion is under good theoretical control, and where additional work is needed. For most distributions and phase space regions the QCD perturbative expansion exhibits good convergence after the inclusion of the NNLO corrections.

Single-inclusive jet production in electron-nucleon collisions through next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD

We compute the ${\cal O}(α^2α_s^2)$ perturbative corrections to inclusive jet production in electron-nucleon collisions. This process is of particular interest to the physics program of a future Electron Ion Collider (EIC). We include all relevant partonic processes, including deep-inelastic scattering contributions, photon-initiated corrections, and parton-parton scattering terms that first appear at this order. Upon integration over the final-state hadronic phase space we validate our results for the deep-inelastic corrections against the known next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) structure functions. Our calculation uses the $N$-jettiness subtraction scheme for performing higher-order computations, and allows for a completely differential description of the deep-inelastic scattering process. We describe the application of this method to inclusive jet production in detail, and present phenomenological results for the proposed EIC. The NNLO corrections have a non-trivial dependence on the jet kinematics and arise from an intricate interplay between all contributing partonic channels.

Phenomenology of the Z-boson plus jet process at NNLO

We present a detailed phenomenological study of Z-boson production in association with a jet through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. Fiducial cross sections and differential distributions for both 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC collisions are presented. We study the impact of different parton distribution functions (PDFs) on predictions for the Z+jet process. Upon inclusion of the NNLO corrections, the residual scale uncertainty is reduced such that both the total rate and the transverse momentum distributions can be used to discriminate between various PDF sets.
