Liquid Handling of the JUNO Experiment

The Filling, Overflow, and Circulation (FOC) system is a critical subsystem of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), responsible for the safe handling of the Liquid Scintillator (LS) and water throughout the detector's commissioning and operational lifetime. This paper details the design and operation of the FOC system, which accomplished the filling of the world's largest LS detector--taking 45 days for water (6.4*10^4 m^3) and 200 days for LS (2.3*10^4 m^3). Throughout water filling, the liquid level difference between the Central Detector and Water Pool was rigorously maintained within safety limits. During LS filling, level control achieved +/-2 cm precision with flow regulation within +/-0.5% of setpoints. An automated control system based on Programmable Logic Controllers and the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System framework ensured reliable operation. The system preserved LS radiopurity, maintaining 222Rn below 1 mBq/m^3 during filling and achieving 238U/232Th concentrations below 10^-16 g/g. The successful commissioning and operation of the FOC system have established it as an indispensable foundation for the stable long-term operation of the JUNO detector.

Study on U/Th residual radioactivity in acrylic from surface treatment

Acrylic is widely used as material for the target container in low background experiments due to its high light transparency and low intrinsic radioactivity. However, its surface can be easily contaminated during production, so careful treatment of the surface is essential to avoid direct contamination of the target. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory will use about 600~t of acrylic to build the spherical vessel of 35.4~m in diameter for a 20~kt liquid scintillator (LS). Since acrylic will contact the LS directly, the cleanliness of the its surface is quite important for the radiopurity of the LS. A new method for measuring the radioactivity of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in acrylic to sub-ppt ($<10^{-12}$~g/g) was developed, and it is crucial for the acrylic radioactivity screening in this study. We performed many background tests on different surface treatments, and the recommended procedure for the treatment of acrylic to achieve low radioactivity and high light transparency could be applicable to other low background experiments.

A practical approach of high precision U and Th concentration measurement in acrylic

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory will build the world's largest liquid scintillator detector to study neutrinos from various sources. The 20 kt liquid scintillator will be stored in a $\sim$600 t acrylic sphere with 35.4 m diameter due to the good light transparency, chemical compatibility and low radioactivity of acrylic. The concentration of U/Th in acrylic is required to be less than 1 ppt (10$^{-12}$ g/g) to achieve a low radioactive background in the fiducial volume of the JUNO detector. The mass production of acrylic has started, and the quality control requires a fast and reliable radioassay on U/Th in acrylic. We have developed a practical method of measuring U/Th in acrylic to sub-ppt level using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). The U/Th in acrylic can be concentrated by vaporizing acrylic in a class 100 environment, and the residue will be collected and sent to ICP-MS for measuring U/Th. All the other chemical operation is done in a class 100 clean room, and the ICP-MS measurement is done in a class 1000 clean room. The recovery efficiency is studied by adding the natural nonexistent nuclei $^{229}$Th and $^{233}$U as the tracers. The resulting method detection limit (MDL) with 99% confidence can reach 0.02/0.06 pg $^{238}$U/$^{232}$Th /g acrylic with $\sim$75% recovery efficiency. This equipment and method can not only be used for the quality control of JUNO acrylic, but also be further optimized for the radioassay on other materials with extremely low radioactivity, such as ultra-pure water and liquid scintillator.

First results of the new endcap TOF commissioning at BESIII

The upgrade of the current BESIII Endcap TOF (ETOF) is carried out with the Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) technology. The installation of the new ETOF has been finished in October 2015. The first results of the MRPCs commissioning at BESIII are reported in this paper.

The upgrade system of BESIII ETOF with MRPC technology

The Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) endcap Time-Of-Filght (ETOF) was proposed to upgrade with Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) technology to substitute the current ETOF of scintillator+PMT for extending time resolutin better than 80 ps and enhance the particle identification capability to satisfy the higher precision requirement of physics. The ETOF system including MRPC modules, front end electronics (FEE), CLOCK module, fast control boards and time to digital modules (TDIG), has been designed, constructed and done some experimental tests seperately. Aiming at examining the quality of entire ETOF system and training the operation of all participated parts, a cosmic ray test system was built at the laboratory and underwent about three months to guarantee performance. In this paper the results will be presented indicating that the entire ETOF system works well and satisfies the requirements of the upgrade.

The cosmic ray test of MRPCs for the BESIII ETOF upgrade

In order to improve the particle identification capability of the Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII),t is proposed to upgrade the current endcap time-of-flight (ETOF) detector with multi-gap resistive plate chamber (MRPC) technology. Aiming at extending ETOF overall time resolution better than 100ps, the whole system including MRPC detectors, new-designed Front End Electronics (FEE), CLOCK module, fast control boards and time to digital modules (TDIG), was built up and operated online 3 months under the cosmic ray. The main purposes of cosmic ray test are checking the detectors' construction quality, testing the joint operation of all instruments and guaranteeing the performance of the system. The results imply MRPC time resolution better than 100$ps$, efficiency is about 98$\%$ and the noise rate of strip is lower than 1$Hz/$($scm^{2}$) at normal threshold range, the details are discussed and analyzed specifically in this paper. The test indicates that the whole ETOF system would work well and satisfy the requirements of upgrade.

Leakage Tests of the Stainless Steel Vessels of the Antineutrino Detectors in the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

The antineutrino detectors in the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment are liquid scintillator detectors designed to detect low energy particles from antineutrino interactions with high efficiency and low backgrounds. Since the antineutrino detector will be installed in a water Cherenkov cosmic ray veto detector and will run for 3 to 5 years, ensuring water tightness is critical to the successful operation of the antineutrino detectors. We choose a special method to seal the detector. Three leak checking methods have been employed to ensure the seal quality. This paper will describe the sealing method and leak testing results.
