Improving Conversational Recommendation Systems via Counterfactual Data Simulation

Conversational recommender systems (CRSs) aim to provide recommendation services via natural language conversations. Although a number of approaches have been proposed for developing capable CRSs, they typically rely on sufficient training data for training. Since it is difficult to annotate recommendation-oriented dialogue datasets, existing CRS approaches often suffer from the issue of insufficient training due to the scarcity of training data. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a CounterFactual data simulation approach for CRS, named CFCRS, to alleviate the issue of data scarcity in CRSs. Our approach is developed based on the framework of counterfactual data augmentation, which gradually incorporates the rewriting to the user preference from a real dialogue without interfering with the entire conversation flow. To develop our approach, we characterize user preference and organize the conversation flow by the entities involved in the dialogue, and design a multi-stage recommendation dialogue simulator based on a conversation flow language model. Under the guidance of the learned user preference and dialogue schema, the flow language model can produce reasonable, coherent conversation flows, which can be further realized into complete dialogues. Based on the simulator, we perform the intervention at the representations of the interacted entities of target users, and design an adversarial training method with a curriculum schedule that can gradually optimize the data augmentation strategy. Extensive experiments show that our approach can consistently boost the performance of several competitive CRSs, and outperform other data augmentation methods, especially when the training data is limited. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/RUCAIBox/CFCRS.

First-principles study of oxygen vacancy defects in orthorhombic Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si gate stack

The gate defect of the ferroelectric HfO$_2$-based Si field-effect transistor (Si FeFET) plays a dominant role in its reliability issue. The first-principles calculations are an effective method for the atomic-scale understanding of gate defects. However, the first-principles study on the defects of FeFET gate stacks, i.e., metal/orthorhombic-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si structure, has not been reported so far. The key challenge is the construction of metal/orthorhombic-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si gate stack models. Here, we use the Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$(130) high-index crystal face as the orthorhombic ferroelectric layer and construct a robust atomic structure of the orthorhombic-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si gate stack without any gap states. Its high structural stability is ascribed to the insulated interface. The calculated band offsets show that this gate structure is of the type-I band alignment. Furthermore, the formation energies and charge transition levels (CTLs) of defects reveal that the oxygen vacancy defects are more favorable to form compared with other defects such as oxygen interstitial and Hf/Zr vacancy, and their CTLs are mainly localized near the Si conduction band minimum and valence band maximum, in agreement with the reported experimental results. The oxygen vacancy defects are responsible for charge trapping/de-trapping behavior in Si FeFET. This work provides an insight into gate defects and paves the way to carry out the first-principles study of ferroelectric HfO$_2$-based Si FeFET.

Towards Unified Conversational Recommender Systems via Knowledge-Enhanced Prompt Learning

Conversational recommender systems (CRS) aim to proactively elicit user preference and recommend high-quality items through natural language conversations. Typically, a CRS consists of a recommendation module to predict preferred items for users and a conversation module to generate appropriate responses. To develop an effective CRS, it is essential to seamlessly integrate the two modules. Existing works either design semantic alignment strategies, or share knowledge resources and representations between the two modules. However, these approaches still rely on different architectures or techniques to develop the two modules, making it difficult for effective module integration. To address this problem, we propose a unified CRS model named UniCRS based on knowledge-enhanced prompt learning. Our approach unifies the recommendation and conversation subtasks into the prompt learning paradigm, and utilizes knowledge-enhanced prompts based on a fixed pre-trained language model (PLM) to fulfill both subtasks in a unified approach. In the prompt design, we include fused knowledge representations, task-specific soft tokens, and the dialogue context, which can provide sufficient contextual information to adapt the PLM for the CRS task. Besides, for the recommendation subtask, we also incorporate the generated response template as an important part of the prompt, to enhance the information interaction between the two subtasks. Extensive experiments on two public CRS datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach.

On unified framework for nonlinear grey system models: an integro-differential equation perspective

Nonlinear grey system models, serving to time series forecasting, are extensively used in diverse areas of science and engineering. However, most research concerns improving classical models and developing novel models, relatively limited attention has been paid to the relationship among diverse models and the modelling mechanism. The current paper proposes a unified framework and reconstructs the unified model from an integro-differential equation perspective. First, we propose a methodological framework that subsumes various nonlinear grey system models as special cases, providing a cumulative sum series-orientated modelling paradigm. Then, by introducing an integral operator, the unified model is reduced to an equivalent integro-differential equation; on this basis, the structural parameters and initial value are estimated simultaneously via the integral matching approach. The modelling procedure comparison further indicates that the integral matching-based integro-differential equation provides a direct modelling paradigm. Next, large-scale Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to compare the finite sample performance, and the results show that the reduced model has higher accuracy and robustness to noise. Applications of forecasting the municipal sewage discharge and water consumption in the Yangtze River Delta of China further illustrate the effectiveness of the reconstructed nonlinear grey models.

Image-based Insider Threat Detection via Geometric Transformation

Insider threat detection has been a challenging task over decades, existing approaches generally employ the traditional generative unsupervised learning methods to produce normal user behavior model and detect significant deviations as anomalies. However, such approaches are insufficient in precision and computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel insider threat detection method, Image-based Insider Threat Detector via Geometric Transformation (IGT), which converts the unsupervised anomaly detection into supervised image classification task, and therefore the performance can be boosted via computer vision techniques. To illustrate, our IGT uses a novel image-based feature representation of user behavior by transforming audit logs into grayscale images. By applying multiple geometric transformations on these behavior grayscale images, IGT constructs a self-labelled dataset and then train a behavior classifier to detect anomaly in self-supervised manner. The motivation behind our proposed method is that images converted from normal behavior data may contain unique latent features which keep unchanged after geometric transformation, while malicious ones cannot. Experimental results on CERT dataset show IGT outperforms the classical autoencoder-based unsupervised insider threat detection approaches, and improves the instance and user based Area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUROC) by 4% and 2%, respectively.

Impact of Interlayer and Ferroelectric Materials on Charge Trapping during Endurance Fatigue of FeFET with TiN/HfxZr1-xO2/interlayer/Si (MFIS) Gate Structure

We study the impact of different interlayers and ferroelectric materials on charge trapping during the endurance fatigue of Si FeFET with TiN/HfxZr1-xO2/interlayer/Si (MFIS) gate stack. We have fabricated FeFET devices with different interlayers (SiO2 or SiON) and HfxZr1-xO2 materials (x=0.75, 0.6, 0.5), and directly extracted the charge trapping during endurance fatigue. We find that: 1) The introduction of the N element in the interlayer suppresses charge trapping and defect generation, and improves the endurance characteristics. 2) As the spontaneous polarization (Ps) of the HfxZr1-xO2 decreases from 25.9 μC/cm2 (Hf0.5Zr0.5O2) to 20.3 μC/cm2 (Hf0.6Zr0.4O2), the charge trapping behavior decreases, resulting in the slow degradation rate of memory window (MW) during program/erase cycling; in addition, when the Ps further decreases to 8.1 μC/cm2 (Hf0.75Zr0.25O2), the initial MW nearly disappears (only ~0.02 V). Thus, the reduction of Ps could improve endurance characteristics. On the contract, it can also reduce the MW. Our work helps design the MFIS gate stack to improve endurance characteristics.

Experimental Extraction and Simulation of Charge Trapping during Endurance of FeFET with TiN/HfZrO/SiO2/Si (MFIS) Gate Structure

We investigate the charge trapping during endurance fatigue of FeFET with TiN/Hf0.5Zr0.5O2/SiO2/Si (MFIS) gate structure. We propose a method of experimentally extracting the number of trapped charges during the memory operation, by measuring the charges in the metal gate and Si substrate. We verify that the amount of trapped charges increases during the endurance fatigue process. This is the first time that the trapped charges are directly experimentally extracted and verified to increase during endurance fatigue. Moreover, we model the interplay between the trapped charges and ferroelectric polarization switching during endurance fatigue. Through the consistency of experimental results and simulated data, we demonstrate that as the memory window decreases: 1) The ferroelectric characteristic of Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 is not degraded. 2) The trap density in the upper bandgap of the gate stacks increases. 3) The reason for memory window decrease is increased trapped electrons after program operation but not related to hole trapping/de-trapping. Our work is helpful to study the charge trapping behavior of FeFET and the related endurance fatigue process.

CRSLab: An Open-Source Toolkit for Building Conversational Recommender System

In recent years, conversational recommender system (CRS) has received much attention in the research community. However, existing studies on CRS vary in scenarios, goals and techniques, lacking unified, standardized implementation or comparison. To tackle this challenge, we propose an open-source CRS toolkit CRSLab, which provides a unified and extensible framework with highly-decoupled modules to develop CRSs. Based on this framework, we collect 6 commonly-used human-annotated CRS datasets and implement 18 models that include recent techniques such as graph neural network and pre-training models. Besides, our toolkit provides a series of automatic evaluation protocols and a human-machine interaction interface to test and compare different CRS methods. The project and documents are released at https://github.com/RUCAIBox/CRSLab.

Thermodynamic driving force of transient negative capacitance of ferroelectric capacitors

This paper investigates the thermodynamic driving force of transient negative capacitance (NC) in the series circuit of the resistor and ferroelectric capacitor (R-FEC). We find that the widely used Landau-Khalatnikov (L-K) theory, that is, the minimum of the Gibbs free energy, is inapplicable to explain the transient NC. The thermodynamic driving force of the transient NC phenomenon is the minimum of the difference between the elastic Gibbs free energy and the electric polarization work. The appearance of the transient NC phenomenon is not due to the widely accepted view that the ferroelectric polarization goes through the negative curvature region of elastic Gibbs free energy landscape (Ga). Instead, the transient NC phenomenon appears when the energy barrier of Ga disappears. The transient NC is dependent on both the intrinsic ferroelectric material parameters and extrinsic factors in the R-FEC circuit.

Arbitrary Polarization Conversion Dichroism Metasurfaces for All-in-One Full Poincaré Sphere Polarizers

The control of polarization, an essential property of light, is of wide scientific and technological interest. Polarizer is an indispensable optical element for direct polarization generations. Except common linear and circular polarizations, however, arbitrary polarization generation heavily resorts to bulky optical components by cascading linear polarizers and waveplates. Here, we present a general strategy for designing all-in-one full Poincaré sphere polarizers based on perfect arbitrary polarization conversion dichroism, and realize it in a monolayer all-dielectric metasurface. It allows preferential transmission and conversion of one polarization state locating at an arbitrary position of the Poincaré sphere to its handedness-flipped state, while completely blocking its orthogonal state. In contrast to previous work with limited flexibility to only linear or circular polarizations, our method manifests perfect dichroism close to 100% in theory and exceeding 90% in experiments for arbitrary polarization states. Leveraging this tantalizing dichroism, our demonstration of monolithic full Poincaré sphere polarization generators directly from unpolarized light can enormously extend the scope of meta-optics and dramatically push the state-of-the-art nanophotonic devices.

Molecular Patterning and Directed Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles on GaAs

The ability to create micro/nano patterns of organic self-assembled monolayers on semiconductor surfaces is crucial for fundamental studies and applications in a number of emerging fields in nanoscience. Here, we demonstrate the patterning of thiol molecular SAMs on oxide-free GaAs surface by dip-pen nanolithography and micro-contact printing, facilitated by a process of surface etching and passivation of the GaAs. A quantitative analysis on the molecular diffusion on GaAs was conducted by examining the writing of nanoscale dot and line patterns by DPN, which agrees well with surface diffusion models. The functionality of the patterned thiol molecules was demonstrated by directed self-assembly of gold nanoparticles onto a template of 4-Aminothiophenol SAM on GaAs. The highly selective assembly of the Au NPs was evidenced with atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The ability to precisely control the assembly of Au NPs on oxide-free semiconductor surfaces using molecular templates may lead to an efficient bottom-up method for the fabrication of nano-plasmonic structures.

Spin selectivity through chiral polyalanine monolayers on semiconductors

Electrical generation of polarized spins in nonmagnetic materials is of great interest for the underlying physics and device potential. One such mechanism is chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS), with which structural chirality leads to different electric conductivities for electrons of opposite spins. The resulting effect of spin filtering has been reported for a number of chiral molecules. However, the microscopic mechanism and manifestation of CISS in practical device structures remain controversial; in particular, the Onsager relation is understood to preclude linear-response detection of CISS by a ferromagnet. Here, we report direct evidence of CISS in two-terminal devices of chiral molecules on the magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As: In vertical heterojunctions of (Ga,Mn)As/AHPA-L molecules/Au, we observed characteristic linear- and nonlinear-response magnetoconductance, which directly verifies spin filtering by the AHPA-L molecules and spin detection by the (Ga,Mn)As. The results constitute definitive signature of CISS-induced spin valve effect, a core spintronic functionality, in apparent violation of the Onsager reciprocity. The results present a promising route to semiconductor spintronics free of any magnetic material.

Static and Dynamic Signatures of Anisotropic Electronic Phase Separation in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 Thin Films under Anisotropic Strain

The electronic phase separation (EPS) of optimally doped La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) thin films under various degrees of anisotropic strain is investigated by static magnetotransport and dynamic relaxation measurements. Three LCMO films were grown simultaneously on (001) NdGaO3 (NGO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition, and then post-growth annealed at 780 oC in O2 for different durations of time. With increasing annealing time, the films developed significant strains of opposite signs along the two orthogonal in-plane directions. The static temperature-dependent resistivity, R(T), was measured simultaneously along the two orthogonal directions. With increasing annealing time, both zero-field-cooled and field-cooled R(T) show significant increases, suggesting strain-triggered EPS and appearance of antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) phases in a ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) ground state. Meanwhile, R(T) along the tensile-strained [010] direction becomes progressively larger than that along the compressive-strained [100]. The enhanced resistivity anisotropy indicates that the EPS is characterized by phase-separated FMM entities with a preferred orientation along [100], possibly due to the cooperative deformation and rotation/tilting of the MnO6 octahedra under the enhanced anisotropic strain. The anisotropic EPS can also be tuned by an external magnetic field. During a field-cycle at several fixed temperatures, the AFI phases are melted at high fields and recovered at low fields, resulting in sharp resistance changes of the ratio as high as 104. Furthermore, the resistivity was found to exhibit glass-like behavior, relaxing logarithmically in the phase-separated states. Fitting the data to a phenomenological model, the resulting resistive viscosity and characteristic relaxation time are found to evolve with temperature, showing a close correlation with the static measurements in the EPS states.

Computational multifocal microscopy

Despite recent advances, high performance single-shot 3D microscopy remains an elusive task. By introducing designed diffractive optical elements (DOEs), one is capable of converting a microscope into a 3D "kaleidoscope", in which case the snapshot image consists of an array of tiles and each tile focuses on different depths. However, the acquired multifocal microscopic (MFM) image suffers from multiple sources of degradation, which prevents MFM from further applications. We propose a unifying computational framework which simplifies the imaging system and achieves 3D reconstruction via computation. Our optical configuration omits chromatic correction grating and redesigns the multifocal grating to enlarge the tracking area. Our proposed setup features only one single grating in addition to a regular microscope. The aberration correction, along with Poisson and background denoising, are incorporated in our deconvolution-based fully-automated algorithm, which requires no empirical parameter-tuning. In experiments, we achieve the spatial resolutions of $0.35$um (lateral) and $0.5$um (axial), which are comparable to the resolution that can be achieved with confocal deconvolution microscopy. We demonstrate a 3D video of moving bacteria recorded at $25$ frames per second using our proposed computational multifocal microscopy technique.

3D Snapshot Microscopy of Extended Objects

Volumetric biological imaging often involves compromising high temporal resolution at the expense of high spatial resolution when popular scanning methods are used to capture 3D information. We introduce an integrated experimental and image reconstruction method for capturing dynamic 3D fluorescent extended objects as a series of synchronously measured 3D snapshots taken at the frame rate of the imaging camera. We employ multifocal microscopy (MFM) to simultaneously image at 25 focal planes and process this depth-encoded image to recover the 3D structure of extended objects, such as bacteria, using a sparsity-based reconstruction approach. The combined experimental and computational method produces image quality similar to confocal microscopy in a fraction of the acquisition time. In addition, our computational image reconstruction approach allows a simplified MFM optical design by correcting aberrations using the measured response to point sources. This "compressive" MFM acquisition and reconstruction method, where an image volume with roughly 8 million voxels is recovered from a single 1-megapixel captured image, enables straightforward study of dynamic processes in 3D, and as a simultaneous snapshot advances the state of the art in dynamic 3D microscopy.

The tracking utilizes the information stored in the interference pattern of both the illuminating incoherent light and the emitted light. By periodically shifting the interferometer phase and a phase retrieval algorithm we obtain information that allow localization with sub-2 nm axial resolution at 5 Hz.

Snapshot 3D tracking of insulin granules in live cells

Rapid and accurate volumetric imaging remains a challenge, yet has the potential to enhance understanding of cell function. We developed and used a multifocal microscope (MFM) for 3D snapshot imaging to allow 3D tracking of insulin granules labeled with mCherry in MIN6 cells. MFM employs a special diffractive optical element (DOE) to simultaneously image multiple focal planes. This simultaneous acquisition of information determines the 3D location of single objects at a speed only limited by the frame rate of array detector . We validated the accuracy of MFM imaging and tracking with fluorescence beads; the 3D positions and trajectories of single fluorescence beads can be determined accurately over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The 3D positions and trajectories of single insulin granules in a 3.2 micro meter deep volume were determined with imaging processing that combines 3D decovolution, shift correction, and finally tracking using the Imaris software package. We find that the motion of the granules is super-diffusive, but less so in 3D than 2D for cells grown on coverslip surfaces, suggesting an anisotropy in the cytoskeleton (e.g. microtubules and action).

Intrinsic Paramagnetic Meissner Effect due to s-wave Odd-Frequency Superconductivity

In 1933, Meissner and Ochsenfeld reported the expulsion of magnetic flux, the diamagnetic Meissner effect, from the interior of superconducting lead. This discovery was crucial in formulating the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity. In exotic superconducting systems BCS theory does not strictly apply. A classical example is a superconductor-magnet hybrid system where magnetic ordering breaks time-reversal symmetry of the superconducting condensate and results in the stabilisation of an odd-frequency superconducting state. It has been predicted that under appropriate conditions, odd-frequency superconductivity should manifest in the Meissner state as fluctuations in the sign of the magnetic susceptibility meaning that the superconductivity can either repel (diamagnetic) or attract (paramagnetic) external magnetic flux. Here we report local probe measurements of faint magnetic fields in a Au/Ho/Nb trilayer system using low energy muons, where antiferromagnetic Ho (4.5 nm) breaks time-reversal symmetry of the proximity induced pair correlations in Au. From depth-resolved measurements below the superconducting transition of Nb we observe a local enhancement of the magnetic field in Au that exceeds the externally applied field, thus proving the existence of an intrinsic paramagnetic Meissner effect arising from an odd-frequency superconducting state.
