Homological stability for the ribbon Higman--Thompson groups

We generalize the notion of asymptotic mapping class groups and allow them to surject to the Higman--Thompson groups, answering a question of Aramayona and Vlamis in the case of the Higman--Thompson groups. When the underlying surface is a disk, these new asymptotic mapping class groups can be identified with the ribbon and oriented ribbon Higman--Thompson groups. We use this model to prove that the ribbon Higman--Thompson groups satisfy homological stability, providing the first homological stability result for dense subgroups of big mapping class groups. Our result can also be treated as an extension of Szymik--Wahl's work on homological stability for the Higman--Thompson groups to the surface setting.

Big mapping class groups with uncountable integral homology

We prove that, for any infinite-type surface $S$, the integral homology of the closure of the compactly-supported mapping class group $\overline{\mathrm{PMap}_c(S)}$ and of the Torelli group $\mathcal{T}(S)$ is uncountable in every positive degree. By our results in arXiv:2211.07470 and other known computations, such a statement cannot be true for the full mapping class group $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ for all infinite-type surfaces $S$. However, we are still able to prove that the integral homology of $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is uncountable in all positive degrees for a large class of infinite-type surfaces $S$. The key property of this class of surfaces is, roughly, that the space of ends of the surface $S$ contains a limit point of topologically distinguished points. Our result includes in particular all finite-genus surfaces having countable end spaces with a unique point of maximal Cantor-Bendixson rank $α$, where $α$ is a successor ordinal. We also observe an order-$10$ element in the first homology of the pure mapping class group of any surface of genus $2$, answering a recent question of G. Domat.

Finiteness properties for relatives of braided Higman--Thompson groups

We study the finiteness properties of the braided Higman--Thompson group $bV_{d,r}(H)$ with labels in $H\leq B_d$, and $bF_{d,r}(H)$ and $bT_{d,r}(H)$ with labels in $H\leq PB_d$ where $B_d$ is the braid group with $d$ strings and $PB_d$ is its pure braid subgroup. We show that for all $d\geq 2$ and $r\geq 1$, the group $bV_{d,r}(H)$ (resp. $bT_{d,r}(H)$ or $bF_{d,r}(H)$) is of type $F_n$ if and only if $H$ is. Our result in particular confirms a recent conjecture of Aroca and Cumplido.

Block mapping class groups and their finiteness properties

A Cantor surface $\mathcal C_d$ is a non-compact surface obtained by gluing copies of a fixed compact surface $Y^d$ (a block), with $d+1$ boundary components, in a tree-like fashion. For a fixed subgroup $H<Map(Y^d)$ , we consider the subgroup $\mathfrak B_d(H)<Map(\mathcal C_d)$ whose elements eventually send blocks to blocks and act like an element of $H$; we refer to $\mathfrak B_d(H)$ as the block mapping class group with local action prescribed by $H$. The family of groups so obtained contains the asymptotic mapping class groups of \cite{SW21a,ABF+21, FK04}. Moreover, there is a natural surjection onto the family symmetric Thompson groups of Farley--Hughes \cite{FH15}; in particular, they provide a positive answer to \cite[Question 5.37]{AV20}. We prove that, when the block is a (holed) sphere or a (holed) torus, $\mathfrak B_d(H)$ is of type $F_n$ if and only if $H$ is of type $F_n$. As a consequence, for every $n$, $Map(C_d)$ has a subgroup of type $F_n$ but not $F_{n+1}$ which contains the mapping class group of every compact subsurface of $\mathcal C_d$.

Poly-freeness of Artin groups and the Farrell-Jones Conjecture

We provide two simple proofs of the fact that even Artin groups of FC-type are poly-free which was recently established by R. Blasco-Garcia, C. Martínez-Pérez and L. Paris. More generally, let $Γ$ be a finite simplicial graph with all edges labelled by positive even integers and $A_Γ$ be its associated Artin group; our new proof implies that if $A_T$ is poly-free (resp. normally poly-free) for every clique $T$ in $Γ$, then $A_Γ$ is poly-free (resp. normally poly-free). We prove similar results regarding the Farrell--Jones Conjecture for even Artin groups. In particular, we show that if $A_Γ$ is an even Artin group such that each clique in $Γ$ either has at most 3 vertices, has all of its labels at least $6$, or is the join of these two types of cliques (the edges connecting the cliques are all labelled by $2$), then $A_Γ$ satisfies the Farrell--Jones Conjecture. In addition, our methods enables us to obtain results for general Artin groups.

The Farrell-Jones Conjecture for normally poly-free groups

We prove the $K$- and $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones Conjecture with coefficients in an additive category for every normally poly-free group, in particular for even Artin groups of FC-type, and for all groups of the form $A\rtimes \mathbb{Z}$ where $A$ is a right-angled Artin group. Our proof relies on the work of Bestvina-Fujiwara-Wigglesworth on the Farrell--Jones Conjecture for free-by-cyclic groups.

On the homotopy of closed manifolds and finite CW-complexes

We study the finite generation of homotopy groups of closed manifolds and finite CW-complexes by relating it to the cohomology of their fundamental groups. Our main theorems are as follows: when $X$ is a finite CW-complex of dimension $n$ and $π_1(X)$ is virtually a Poincaré duality group of dimension $\geq n-1$, then $π_i(X)$ is not finitely generated for some $i$ unless $X$ is homotopy equivalent to the Eilenberg--MacLane space $K(π_1(X),1)$; when $M$ is an $n$-dimensional closed manifold and $π_1(M)$ is virtually a Poincaré duality group of dimension $\ge n-1$, then for some $i\leq [n/2]$, $π_i(M)$ is not finitely generated, unless $M$ itself is an aspherical manifold. These generalize theorems of M. Damian from polycyclic groups to any virtually Poincaré duality groups. When $π_1(X)$ is not a virtually Poincaré duality group, we also obtained similar results. As a by-product we showed that if a group $G$ is of type F and $H^i(G,\mathbb{Z} G)$ is finitely generated for any $i$, then $G$ is a Poincaré duality group. This recovers partially a theorem of Farrell.

Riemannian foliation with exotic tori as leaves

We construct smooth fiber bundles such that the fibers are exotic tori and the total space has finite abelian fundamental group. This gives examples of a Riemannian foliation on a closed manifold whose leaves are exotic tori and whose total space has finite abelian fundamental group.

On the finiteness of the classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups

Given a group G, we consider its classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups. We show for many groups, including for example, one-relator groups, acylindrically hyperbolic groups, 3-manifold groups and CAT(0) cube groups, that they do not admit a finite model for this classifying space unless they are virtually cyclic. This settles a conjecture due to Juan-Pineda and Leary for these classes of groups.

Some results related to finiteness properties of groups for families of subgroups

For a group $G$ we consider the classifying space $E_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G)$ for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups. We show that an Artin group admits a finite model for $E_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G)$ if and only if it is virtually cyclic. This solves a conjecture of Juan-Pineda and Leary and a question of Lück-Reich-Rognes-Varisco for Artin groups. We then study the conjugacy growth of CAT(0) groups and show that if a CAT(0) group contains a free abelian group of rank two, its conjugacy growth is strictly faster than linear. This also yields an alternative proof for the fact that a CAT(0) cube group admits a finite model for $E_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G)$ if and only if it is virtually cyclic. Our last result deals with the homotopy type of the quotient space $B_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G) = E_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G)/G$. We show for a poly-$\mathbb Z$-group $G$, that $B_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G)$ is homotopy equivalent to a finite CW-complex if and only if $G$ is cyclic.

Linear Groups, Conjugacy Growth, and Classifying Spaces for Families of Subgroups

Given a group $G$ and a family of subgroups $\mathcal{F}$, we consider its classifying space $E_{\mathcal F}G$ with respect to $\mathcal{F}$. When $\mathcal F = \mathcal{VC}yc$ is the family of virtually cyclic subgroups, Juan-Pineda and Leary conjectured that a group admits a finite model for this classifying space if and only if it is virtually cyclic. By establishing a connection to conjugacy growth we can show that this conjecture holds for linear groups. We investigate a similar question that was asked by Lück--Reich--Rognes--Varisco for the family of cyclic subgroups. Finally, we construct finitely generated groups that exhibit wild inner automorphims but which admit a model for $E_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G)$ whose 0-skeleton is finite.

Stability results for Houghton groups

We prove homological stability for a twisted version of the Houghton groups and their multidimensional analogues. Based on this, we can describe the homology of the Houghton groups and that of their multidimensional analogues over constant noetherian coefficients as an essentially finitely generated $FI$-module.

In this paper, we prove the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups with coefficients in an additive category. We also extend our results to groups of the form, Z[1/p] semidirect product with any virtually cyclic group, where p is a prime number.
