Twitter, human mobility, and COVID-19

The outbreak of COVID-19 highlights the need for a more harmonized, less privacy-concerning, easily accessible approach to monitoring the human mobility that has been proved to be associated with the viral transmission. In this study, we analyzed 587 million tweets worldwide to see how global collaborative efforts in reducing human mobility are reflected from the user-generated information at the global, country, and the U.S. state scale. Considering the multifaceted nature of mobility, we propose two types of distance: the single-day distance and the cross-day distance. To quantify the responsiveness in certain geographical regions, we further propose a mobility-based responsive index (MRI) that captures the overall degree of mobility changes within a time window. The results suggest that mobility patterns obtained from Twitter data are amendable to quantitatively reflect the mobility dynamics. Globally, the proposed two distances had greatly deviated from their baselines after March 11, 2020, when WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic. The considerably less periodicity after the declaration suggests that the protection measures have obviously affected people's travel routines. The country scale comparisons reveal the discrepancies in responsiveness, evidenced by the contrasting mobility patterns in different epidemic phases. We find that the triggers of mobility changes correspond well with the national announcements of mitigation measures. In the U.S., the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on mobility is distinct. However, the impacts varied substantially among states. The strong mobility recovering momentum is further fueled by the Black Lives Matter protests, potentially fostering the second wave of infections in the U.S.

DDKSP: A Data-Driven Stochastic Programming Framework for Car-Sharing Relocation Problem

Car-sharing issue is a popular research field in sharing economy. In this paper, we investigate the car-sharing relocation problem (CSRP) under uncertain demands. Normally, the real customer demands follow complicating probability distribution which cannot be described by parametric approaches. In order to overcome the problem, an innovative framework called Data-Driven Kernel Stochastic Programming (DDKSP) that integrates a non-parametric approach - kernel density estimation (KDE) and a two-stage stochastic programming (SP) model is proposed. Specifically, the probability distributions are derived from historical data by KDE, which are used as the input uncertain parameters for SP. Additionally, the CSRP is formulated as a two-stage SP model. Meanwhile, a Monte Carlo method called sample average approximation (SAA) and Benders decomposition algorithm are introduced to solve the large-scale optimization model. Finally, the numerical experimental validations which are based on New York taxi trip data sets show that the proposed framework outperforms the pure parametric approaches including Gaussian, Laplace and Poisson distributions with 3.72% , 4.58% and 11% respectively in terms of overall profits.

On Clearing Prices in Matching Markets: A Simple Characterization without Duality

Duality of linear programming is a standard approach to the classical weighted maximum matching problem. From an economic perspective, the dual variables can be regarded as prices of products and payoffs of buyers in a two-sided matching market. Traditional duality-based algorithms, e.g., Hungarian, essentially aims at finding a set of prices that clears the market. Under such market-clearing prices, a maximum matching is formed when buyers buy their most preferred products respectively. We study the property of market-clearing prices without the use of duality, showing that: (1) the space of market-clearing prices is convex and closed under element-wise maximum and minimum operations; (2) any market-clearing prices induce all maximum matchings.

Heterogeneous Coexistence of Cognitive Radio Networks in TV White Space

Wireless standards (e.g., IEEE 802.11af and 802.22) have been developed for enabling opportunistic access in TV white space (TVWS) using cognitive radio (CR) technology. When heterogeneous CR networks that are based on different wireless standards operate in the same TVWS, coexistence issues can potentially cause major problems. Enabling collaborative coexistence via direct coordination between heterogeneous CR networks is very challenging, due to incompatible MAC/PHY designs of coexisting networks, requirement of an over-the-air common control channel for inter-network communications, and time synchronization across devices from different networks. Moreover, such a coexistence scheme would require competing networks or service providers to exchange sensitive control information that may raise conflict of interest issues and customer privacy concerns. In this paper, we present an architecture for enabling collaborative coexistence of heterogeneous CR networks over TVWS, called Symbiotic Heterogeneous coexistence ARchitecturE (SHARE). Define "indirect coordination" first before using it. Because coexistence cannot avoid coordination By mimicking the symbiotic relationships between heterogeneous organisms in a stable ecosystem, SHARE establishes an indirect coordination mechanism between heterogeneous CR networks via a mediator system, which avoids the drawbacks of direct coordination. SHARE includes two spectrum sharing algorithms whose designs were inspired by well-known models and theories from theoretical ecology, viz, the interspecific competition model and the ideal free distribution model.

Learning Symmetry Consistent Deep CNNs for Face Completion

Deep convolutional networks (CNNs) have achieved great success in face completion to generate plausible facial structures. These methods, however, are limited in maintaining global consistency among face components and recovering fine facial details. On the other hand, reflectional symmetry is a prominent property of face image and benefits face recognition and consistency modeling, yet remaining uninvestigated in deep face completion. In this work, we leverage two kinds of symmetry-enforcing subnets to form a symmetry-consistent CNN model (i.e., SymmFCNet) for effective face completion. For missing pixels on only one of the half-faces, an illumination-reweighted warping subnet is developed to guide the warping and illumination reweighting of the other half-face. As for missing pixels on both of half-faces, we present a generative reconstruction subnet together with a perceptual symmetry loss to enforce symmetry consistency of recovered structures. The SymmFCNet is constructed by stacking generative reconstruction subnet upon illumination-reweighted warping subnet, and can be end-to-end learned from training set of unaligned face images. Experiments show that SymmFCNet can generate high quality results on images with synthetic and real occlusion, and performs favorably against state-of-the-arts.

Cascade-Net: a New Deep Learning Architecture for OFDM Detection

In this paper, we consider using deep neural network for OFDM symbol detection and demonstrate its performance advantages in combating large Doppler Shift. In particular, a new architecture named Cascade-Net is proposed for detection, where deep neural network is cascading with a zero-forcing preprocessor to prevent the network stucking in a saddle point or a local minimum point. In addition, we propose a sliding detection approach in order to detect OFDM symbols with large number of subcarriers. We evaluate this new architecture, as well as the sliding algorithm, using the Rayleigh channel with large Doppler spread, which could degrade detection performance in an OFDM system and is especially severe for high frequency band and mmWave communications. The numerical results of OFDM detection in SISO scenario show that cascade-net can achieve better performance than zero-forcing method while providing robustness against ill conditioned channels. We also show the better performance of the sliding cascade network (SCN) compared to sliding zero-forcing detector through numerical simulation.

Diffusion-controlled Alloying of Single-phase Multi-principal Covalent Transition Metal Carbides with Enhanced Damage tolerance and Exceptional Thermal Properties

Multicomponent alloying has displayed extraordinary potential for producing exceptional structural and functional materials. However, the synthesis of single-phase, multi-principal covalent compounds remains a challenge. Here we present a diffusion-controlled alloying strategy for the successful realization of covalent multi-principal transition metal carbides (MPTMCs) with a single face-centered cubic (FCC) phase. The increased interfacial diffusion promoted by the addition of a nonstoichiometric compound leads to rapid formation of the new single phase at much lower sintering temperature. Direct atomic-level observations via scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that MPTMCs are composed of a single phase with a random distribution of all cations, which holds the key to the unique combinations of improved fracture toughness, superior Vickers hardness, and extremely lower thermal diffusivity achieved in MPTMCs. The present discovery provides a promising approach toward the design and synthesis of next-generation high-performance materials.

Identity Preserving Face Completion for Large Ocular Region Occlusion

We present a novel deep learning approach to synthesize complete face images in the presence of large ocular region occlusions. This is motivated by recent surge of VR/AR displays that hinder face-to-face communications. Different from the state-of-the-art face inpainting methods that have no control over the synthesized content and can only handle frontal face pose, our approach can faithfully recover the missing content under various head poses while preserving the identity. At the core of our method is a novel generative network with dedicated constraints to regularize the synthesis process. To preserve the identity, our network takes an arbitrary occlusion-free image of the target identity to infer the missing content, and its high-level CNN features as an identity prior to regularize the searching space of generator. Since the input reference image may have a different pose, a pose map and a novel pose discriminator are further adopted to supervise the learning of implicit pose transformations. Our method is capable of generating coherent facial inpainting with consistent identity over videos with large variations of head motions. Experiments on both synthesized and real data demonstrate that our method greatly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both synthesis quality and robustness.

Free-space creation of ultralong anti-diffracting light beam with multiple energy oscillations adjusted using optical pen

A light beam propagating with an infinite anti-diffracting distance requires infinite power to preserve its shape. However, the fundamental barrier of finite power in free space has made the problem of diffraction insurmountable over the past few decades. Here, to overcome this limitation, we report an approach that employs the multiple energy oscillation mechanism, thereby permitting the creation of a light beam with an ultralong anti-diffracting distance in free space. The anti-diffracting distance is no longer restricted by finite power in free space but instead depends on the number of energy oscillations. This unprecedented propagation behavior is attributed to a new understanding of non-diffractive light beam: when an anti-diffracting light beam completely discharges its energy, it cannot recharge again. A versatile optical pen is therefore developed to manipulate the number, amplitude, position and phase of energy oscillations for an arbitrary numerical aperture of a focusing lens so that energy recharge can occur in free space and multiple energy oscillations can be realized. A light beam with a tunable number of energy oscillations is eventually generated in free space and propagates along a wavy trajectory. This work will enable extending non-diffractive light beams to an expanded realm and facilitate extensive developments in optics and other research fields, such as electronics and acoustics.

Collisionless periodic orbits in the free-fall three-body problem

Although the free-fall three-body problem have been investigated for more than one century, however, only four collisionless periodic orbits have been found. In this paper, we report 234 collisionless periodic orbits of the free-fall three-body system with some mass ratios, including three known collisionless periodic orbits. Thus, 231 collisionless free-fall periodic orbits among them are entirely new. In theory, we can gain periodic orbits of the free-fall three-body system in arbitrary ratio of mass. Besides, it is found that, for a given ratio of masses of two bodies, there exists a generalized Kepler's third law for the periodic three-body system. All of these would enrich our knowledge and deepen our understanding about the famous three-body problem as a whole.

Clean Numerical Simulation: A New Strategy to Obtain Reliable Solutions of Chaotic Dynamic Systems

It is well known that chaotic dynamic systems (such as three-body system, turbulent flow and so on) have the sensitive dependence on initial conditions (SDIC). Unfortunately, numerical noises (such as truncation error and round-off error) always exist in practice. Thus, due to the SDIC, long-term accurate prediction of chaotic dynamic systems is practically impossible. In this paper, a new strategy for chaotic dynamic systems, i.e. the Clean Numerical Simulation (CNS), is briefly described, together with its applications to a few Hamiltonian chaotic systems. With negligible numerical noises, the CNS can provide convergent (reliable) chaotic trajectories in a long enough interval of time. This is very important for Hamiltonian systems such as three-body problem, and thus should have many applications in various fields. We find that the traditional numerical methods in double precision cannot give not only reliable trajectories but also reliable Fourier power spectra and autocorrelation functions. In addition, it is found that even statistic properties of chaotic systems can not be correctly obtained by means of traditional numerical algorithms in double precision, as long as these statistics are time-dependent. Thus, our CNS results strongly suggest that one had better to be very careful on DNS results of statistically unsteady turbulent flows, although DNS results often agree well with experimental data when turbulent flows are in a statistical stationary state.

Learning Warped Guidance for Blind Face Restoration

This paper studies the problem of blind face restoration from an unconstrained blurry, noisy, low-resolution, or compressed image (i.e., degraded observation). For better recovery of fine facial details, we modify the problem setting by taking both the degraded observation and a high-quality guided image of the same identity as input to our guided face restoration network (GFRNet). However, the degraded observation and guided image generally are different in pose, illumination and expression, thereby making plain CNNs (e.g., U-Net) fail to recover fine and identity-aware facial details. To tackle this issue, our GFRNet model includes both a warping subnetwork (WarpNet) and a reconstruction subnetwork (RecNet). The WarpNet is introduced to predict flow field for warping the guided image to correct pose and expression (i.e., warped guidance), while the RecNet takes the degraded observation and warped guidance as input to produce the restoration result. Due to that the ground-truth flow field is unavailable, landmark loss together with total variation regularization are incorporated to guide the learning of WarpNet. Furthermore, to make the model applicable to blind restoration, our GFRNet is trained on the synthetic data with versatile settings on blur kernel, noise level, downsampling scale factor, and JPEG quality factor. Experiments show that our GFRNet not only performs favorably against the state-of-the-art image and face restoration methods, but also generates visually photo-realistic results on real degraded facial images.

Shift-Net: Image Inpainting via Deep Feature Rearrangement

Deep convolutional networks (CNNs) have exhibited their potential in image inpainting for producing plausible results. However, in most existing methods, e.g., context encoder, the missing parts are predicted by propagating the surrounding convolutional features through a fully connected layer, which intends to produce semantically plausible but blurry result. In this paper, we introduce a special shift-connection layer to the U-Net architecture, namely Shift-Net, for filling in missing regions of any shape with sharp structures and fine-detailed textures. To this end, the encoder feature of the known region is shifted to serve as an estimation of the missing parts. A guidance loss is introduced on decoder feature to minimize the distance between the decoder feature after fully connected layer and the ground-truth encoder feature of the missing parts. With such constraint, the decoder feature in missing region can be used to guide the shift of encoder feature in known region. An end-to-end learning algorithm is further developed to train the Shift-Net. Experiments on the Paris StreetView and Places datasets demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our Shift-Net in producing sharper, fine-detailed, and visually plausible results. The codes and pre-trained models are available at https://github.com/Zhaoyi-Yan/Shift-Net.

Mobile Social Big Data: WeChat Moments Dataset, Network Applications, and Opportunities

In parallel to the increase of various mobile technologies, the mobile social network (MSN) service has brought us into an era of mobile social big data, where people are creating new social data every second and everywhere. It is of vital importance for businesses, government, and institutes to understand how peoples' behaviors in the online cyberspace can affect the underlying computer network, or their offline behaviors at large. To study this problem, we collect a dataset from WeChat Moments, called WeChatNet, which involves 25,133,330 WeChat users with 246,369,415 records of link reposting on their pages. We revisit three network applications based on the data analytics over WeChatNet, i.e., the information dissemination in mobile cellular networks, the network traffic prediction in backbone networks, and the mobile population distribution projection. Meanwhile, we discuss the potential research opportunities for developing new applications using the released dataset.

UAV Offloading: Spectrum Trading Contract Design for UAV Assisted 5G Networks

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has been recognized as a promising way to assist future wireless communications due to its high flexibility of deployment and scheduling. In this paper, we focus on temporarily deployed UAVs that provide downlink data offloading in some regions under a macro base station (MBS). Since the manager of the MBS and the operators of the UAVs could be of different interest groups, we formulate the corresponding spectrum trading problem by means of contract theory, where the manager of the MBS has to design an optimal contract to maximize its own revenue. Such contract comprises a set of bandwidth options and corresponding prices, and each UAV operator only chooses the most profitable one from all the options in the whole contract. We analytically derive the optimal pricing strategy based on fixed bandwidth assignment, and then propose a dynamic programming algorithm to calculate the optimal bandwidth assignment in polynomial time. By simulations, we compare the outcome of the MBS optimal contract with that of a social optimal one, and find that a selfish MBS manager sells less bandwidth to the UAV operators.

The 1223 new periodic orbits of planar three-body problem with unequal mass and zero angular momentum

We present 1349 families of Newtonian periodic planar three-body orbits with unequal mass and zero angular momentum and the initial conditions in case of isosceles collinear configurations. These 1349 families of the periodic collisionless orbits can be divided into seven classes according to their geometric and algebraic symmetries. Among these 1349 families, 1223 families are entirely new, to the best of our knowledge. Furthermore, some periodic orbits have the same free group element for different mass. We find that the scale-invariant average period linearly increases with the mass of one body when the masses of the other two are constant. It is suggested that the masses of bodies may play an important role in periodic three-body systems. The movies of these periodic orbits are given on the website \url{http://numericaltank.sjtu.edu.cn/three-body/three-body-unequal-mass.htm} .

More than six hundreds new families of Newtonian periodic planar collisionless three-body orbits

The famous three-body problem can be traced back to Isaac Newton in 1680s. In the 300 years since this "three-body problem" was first recognized, only three families of periodic solutions had been found, until 2013 when Šuvakov and Dmitrašinović [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 114301 (2013)] made a breakthrough to numerically find 13 new distinct periodic orbits, which belong to 11 new families of Newtonian planar three-body problem with equal mass and zero angular momentum. In this paper, we numerically obtain 695 families of Newtonian periodic planar collisionless orbits of three-body system with equal mass and zero angular momentum in case of initial conditions with isosceles collinear configuration, including the well-known Figure-eight family found by Moore in 1993, the 11 families found by Šuvakov and Dmitrašinović in 2013, and more than 600 new families that have been never reported, to the best of our knowledge. With the definition of the average period $\bar{T} = T/L_f$, where $L_f$ is the length of the so-called "free group element", these 695 families suggest that there should exist the quasi Kepler's third law $ \bar{T}^* \approx 2.433 \pm 0.075$ for the considered case, where $\bar{T}^*= \bar{T} |E|^{3/2}$ is the scale-invariant average period and $E$ is its total kinetic and potential energy, respectively. The movies of these 695 periodic orbits in the real space and the corresponding close curves on the "shape sphere" can be found via the website: http://numericaltank.sjtu.edu.cn/three-body/three-body.htm
