FISF: Better User Experience using Smaller Bandwidth for Panoramic Virtual Reality Video

The panoramic video is widely used to build virtual reality (VR) and is expected to be one of the next generation Killer-Apps. Transmitting panoramic VR videos is a challenging task because of two problems: 1) panoramic VR videos are typically much larger than normal videos but they need to be transmitted with limited bandwidth in mobile networks. 2) high-resolution and fluent views should be provided to guarantee a superior user experience and avoid side-effects such as dizziness and nausea. To address these two problems, we propose a novel interactive streaming technology, namely Focus-based Interactive Streaming Framework (FISF). FISF consists of three parts: 1) we use the classic clustering algorithm DBSCAN to analyze real user data for Video Focus Detection (VFD); 2) we propose a Focus-based Interactive Streaming Technology (FIST), including a static version and a dynamic version; 3) we propose two optimization methods: focus merging and prefetch strategy. Experimental results show that FISF significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art. The paper is submitted to Sigcomm 2017, VR/AR Network on 31 Mar 2017 at 10:44:04am EDT.

SF-sketch: A Two-stage Sketch for Data Streams

A sketch is a probabilistic data structure used to record frequencies of items in a multi-set. Sketches are widely used in various fields, especially those that involve processing and storing data streams. In streaming applications with high data rates, a sketch "fills up" very quickly. Thus, its contents are periodically transferred to the remote collector, which is responsible for answering queries. In this paper, we propose a new sketch, called Slim-Fat (SF) sketch, which has a significantly higher accuracy compared to prior art, a much smaller memory footprint, and at the same time achieves the same speed as the best prior sketch. The key idea behind our proposed SF-sketch is to maintain two separate sketches: a small sketch called Slim-subsketch and a large sketch called Fat-subsketch. The Slim-subsketch is periodically transferred to the remote collector for answering queries quickly and accurately. The Fat-subsketch, however, is not transferred to the remote collector because it is used only to assist the Slim-subsketch during the insertions and deletions and is not used to answer queries. We implemented and extensively evaluated SF-sketch along with several prior sketches and compared them side by side. Our experimental results show that SF-sketch outperforms the most widely used CM-sketch by up to 33.1 times in terms of accuracy. We have released the source codes of our proposed sketch as well as existing sketches at Github. The short version of this paper will appear in ICDE 2017.

The influence of numerical noises on statistics computation of chaotic dynamic systems

It is well known that chaotic dynamic systems (such as three-body system, turbulent flow and so on) have the sensitive dependance on initial conditions (SDIC). Unfortunately, numerical noises (such as truncation error and round-off error) always exist in practice. Thus, due to the SDIC, long-term accurate prediction of chaotic dynamic systems is practically impossible, and therefore numerical simulations of chaos are only mixtures of "true" solution with physical meanings and numerical noises without physical meanings. However, it is traditionally believed that statistic computations based on such kind of "mixtures" of numerical simulations of chaotic dynamic systems are acceptable. In this paper, using the so-called "clean numerical simulation" (CNS) whose numerical noises might be much smaller even than micro-level physical uncertainty and thus are negligible, we gain accurate prediction of a chaotic dynamic system in a long enough interval of time. Then, based on these reliable simulations, the influence of numerical noises on statistic computations is investigated. It is found that the influence of numerical noises is negligible when statistic results are time-independent. Unfortunately, when a chaotic dynamic system is far from equilibrium state so that its statistics are time-dependent, numerical noises have a great influence even on statistic computations. It suggests that even the direct numerical simulations (DNS) might not give reliable statistic computations for non-equilibrium dynamic systems with the SDIC.

Observation of two coupled Faraday waves in a vertically vibrating Hele-Shaw cell with one of them oscillating horizontally

A system of two-dimensional, two coupled Faraday interfacial waves is experimentally observed at the two interfaces of the three layers of fluids (air, pure ethanol and silicon oil) in a sealed Hele-Shaw cell with periodic vertical vibration. The upper and lower Faraday waves coexist: the upper vibrates vertically, but the crests of the lower one oscillate horizontally with unchanged wave height and a frequency equal to the half of the forcing one of the vertically vibrating basin, while the troughs of the lower one always stay in the same place (relative to the basin). Besides, they are strongly coupled: the wave height of the lower Faraday wave is either a linear function (in the case of a fixed forcing frequency) or a parabolic function (in the case of a fixed acceleration amplitude) of that of the upper, with the same wave length. In addition, the upper Faraday wave temporarily loses its smoothness at around $t=T/4$ and $t=3T/4$, where $T$ denotes the wave period, and thus has fundamental difference from the traditional one. To the best of our knowledge, this system of the two coupled Faraday waves has never been reported.

Caching as a Service: Small-cell Caching Mechanism Design for Service Providers

Wireless network virtualization has been well recognized as a way to improve the flexibility of wireless networks by decoupling the functionality of the system and implementing infrastructure and spectrum as services. Recent studies have shown that caching provides a better performance to serve the content requests from mobile users. In this paper, we propose that \emph{caching can be applied as a service} in mobile networks, i.e., different service providers (SPs) cache their contents in the storages of wireless facilities that owned by mobile network operators (MNOs). Specifically, we focus on the scenario of \emph{small-cell networks}, where cache-enabled small-cell base stations (SBSs) are the facilities to cache contents. To deal with the competition for storages among multiple SPs, we design a mechanism based on multi-object auctions, where the time-dependent feature of system parameters and the frequency of content replacement are both taken into account. Simulation results show that our solution leads to a satisfactory outcome.

Neural Generative Question Answering

This paper presents an end-to-end neural network model, named Neural Generative Question Answering (GENQA), that can generate answers to simple factoid questions, based on the facts in a knowledge-base. More specifically, the model is built on the encoder-decoder framework for sequence-to-sequence learning, while equipped with the ability to enquire the knowledge-base, and is trained on a corpus of question-answer pairs, with their associated triples in the knowledge-base. Empirical study shows the proposed model can effectively deal with the variations of questions and answers, and generate right and natural answers by referring to the facts in the knowledge-base. The experiment on question answering demonstrates that the proposed model can outperform an embedding-based QA model as well as a neural dialogue model trained on the same data.

A Shifting Bloom Filter Framework for Set Queries

Set queries are fundamental operations in computer systems and applications. This paper addresses the fundamental problem of designing a probabilistic data structure that can quickly process set queries using a small amount of memory. We propose a Shifting Bloom Filter (ShBF) framework for representing and querying sets. We demonstrate the effectiveness of ShBF using three types of popular set queries: membership, association, and multiplicity queries. The key novelty of ShBF is on encoding the auxiliary information of a set element in a location offset. In contrast, prior BF based set data structures allocate additional memory to store auxiliary information. To evaluate ShBF in comparison with prior art, we conducted experiments using real-world network traces. Results show that ShBF significantly advances the state-of-the-art on all three types of set queries.

On the inherent self-excited macroscopic randomness of chaotic three-body system

What is the origin of macroscopic randomness (uncertainty)? This is one of the most fundamental open questions for human being. In this paper, 10000 samples of reliable (convergent), multiple-scale (from 1.0E-60 to 100) numerical simulations of a chaotic three-body system indicate that, without any external disturbance, the microscopic inherent uncertainty (in the level of 1.0E-60) due to physical fluctuation of initial positions of the three-body system enlarges exponentially into macroscopic randomness (at the level O(1)) until t=T*, the so-called physical limit time of prediction, but propagates algebraically thereafter when accurate prediction of orbit is impossible. Note that these 10000 samples use micro-level, inherent physical fluctuations of initial position, which have nothing to do with human being. Especially, the differences of these 10000 fluctuations are mathematically so small (in the level of 1.0E-60) that they are physically the SAME since a distance shorter than a Planck length does not make physical senses according to the spring theory. It indicates that the macroscopic randomness of the chaotic three-body system is self-excited, say, without any external force or disturbances, from the inherent micro-level uncertainty. This provides us the new concept "self-excited macroscopic randomness (uncertainty)". In addition, it is found that, without any external disturbance, the chaotic three-body system might randomly disrupt with the symmetry-breaking at t=1000 in about 25% probability, which provides us the new concepts "self-excited random disruption", "self-excited random escape" and "self-excited symmetry breaking" of the chaotic three-body system. It suggests that a chaotic three-body system might randomly evolve by itself, without any external forces or disturbance.

On Heterogeneous Neighbor Discovery in Wireless Sensor Networks

Neighbor discovery plays a crucial role in the formation of wireless sensor networks and mobile networks where the power of sensors (or mobile devices) is constrained. Due to the difficulty of clock synchronization, many asynchronous protocols based on wake-up scheduling have been developed over the years in order to enable timely neighbor discovery between neighboring sensors while saving energy. However, existing protocols are not fine-grained enough to support all heterogeneous battery duty cycles, which can lead to a more rapid deterioration of long-term battery health for those without support. Existing research can be broadly divided into two categories according to their neighbor-discovery techniques---the quorum based protocols and the co-primality based protocols. In this paper, we propose two neighbor discovery protocols, called Hedis and Todis, that optimize the duty cycle granularity of quorum and co-primality based protocols respectively, by enabling the finest-grained control of heterogeneous duty cycles. We compare the two optimal protocols via analytical and simulation results, which show that although the optimal co-primality based protocol (Todis) is simpler in its design, the optimal quorum based protocol (Hedis) has a better performance since it has a lower relative error rate and smaller discovery delay, while still allowing the sensor nodes to wake up at a more infrequent rate.
