Phagraphene: A Low-energy Graphene Allotrope composed of 5-6-7 Carbon Rings with Distorted Dirac Cones

Using systematic evolutionary structure searching we propose a new carbon allotrope, phagraphene, standing for penta-hexa-hepta-graphene, because the structure is composed of 5-6-7 carbon rings. This two-dimensional (2D) carbon structure is lower in energy than most of the predicted 2D carbon allotropes due to its sp2-hybridization and density of atomic packing comparable to graphene. More interestingly, the electronic structure of phagraphene has distorted Dirac cones. The direction-dependent cones are further proved to be robust against external strain with tunable Fermi velocities.

Location Prediction of Social Images via Generative Model

The vast amount of geo-tagged social images has attracted great attention in research of predicting location using the plentiful content of images, such as visual content and textual description. Most of the existing researches use the text-based or vision-based method to predict location. There still exists a problem: how to effectively exploit the correlation between different types of content as well as their geographical distributions for location prediction. In this paper, we propose to predict image location by learning the latent relation between geographical location and multiple types of image content. In particularly, we propose a geographical topic model GTMI (geographical topic model of social image) to integrate multiple types of image content as well as the geographical distributions, In GTMI, image topic is modeled on both text vocabulary and visual feature. Each region has its own distribution over topics and hence has its own language model and vision pattern. The location of a new image is estimated based on the joint probability of image content and similarity measure on topic distribution between images. Experiment results demonstrate the performance of location prediction based on GTMI.

Collective dark states controlled transmission in plasmonic slot waveguide with a stub coupled to a cavity dimer

We report collective dark states controlled transmission in metal-dielectric-metal waveguides with a stub coupled to two twin cavities, namely, plasmonic waveguide-stub-dimer systems. In absence of one individual cavity in the dimer, plasmon induced transparency (PIT) is possible when the cavity and the stub have the same resonance frequency. However, it is shown that the hybridized modes in the dimer collectively generate two dark states which make the stub-dimer "invisible" to the straight waveguide, splitting the original PIT peak into two in the transmission spectrum. Simultaneously, the original PIT peak becomes a dip due to dark state interaction, yielding anti-PIT-like modulation of the transmission. With full-wave electromagnetic simulation, we demonstrate that this transition is controlled by the dimer-stub separation and the dimer-stub relative position. All results are analytically described by the temporal coupled mode theory. Our results may be useful in designing densely integrated optical circuits, and in optical sensing and switching applications.

Transition from semiconducting to metallic-like conducting and weak antilocalization effect in single crystals of LuPtSb

High quality half-Heusler single crystals of LuPtSb have been synthesized by a Pb flux method. The temperature dependent resistivity and Hall effects indicate that the LuPtSb crystal is a p-type gapless semiconductor showing a transition from semiconducting to metallic conducting at 150 K. Moreover, a weakly temperature-dependent positive magnetoresistance (MR) as large as 109 % and high carrier mobility up to 2950 cm2/Vs are experimentally observed at temperatures below 150 K. The low-field MR data shows evidence for weak antilocalization (WAL) effect at temperatures even up to 150 K. Analysis of the temperature and angle dependent magnetoconductance manifests that the WAL effect originates from the bulk contribution owing to the strong spin-orbital coupling.

NMR evidence for enhanced orbital diamagnetism in topologically nontrivial half-Heusler semimetals

209Bi nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was employed to probe potential spin-orbit effects on orbital diamagnetism in YPtBi and YPdBi crystals. The observed opposite sign and temperature dependent magnitude of 209Bi NMR shifts of both crystals reveal experimental signatures of enhanced orbital diamagnetism induced by spin-orbit interactions. This investigation indicates that NMR isotropic shifts might be beneficial in search of interesting spin-electronic phases among a vast number of topological nontrivial half-Heusler semimetals.

${\rm K}_{\rm S}^{0}$ and $Λ$ Production in Charged Particle Jets in p--Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV with ALICE

We study the production of ${\rm K}_{\rm S}^{0}$ mesons and $Λ$ baryons in jets in p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The $p_{\rm T}$-differential density of the particles produced in jets is compared to the inclusive distributions and the $Λ/{\rm K}_{\rm S}^{0}$ ratio is reported in bins of multiplicity of the collisions. The hard scatterings are selected on an event-by-event basis using the anti-$k_{\rm T}$ clustering algorithm with resolution parameter $R=0.2,~0.3$ and $0.4$, reconstructed from charged particles with a minimum $p_{\rm T,jet}$ of $10$ (or $20$) GeV/$c$.

Weak Antilocalization Effect and Noncentrosymmetric Superconductivity in a Topologically Nontrivial Semimetal LuPdBi

A large number of half-Heusler compounds have been recently proposed as three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) with tunable physical properties. However, no transport measurements associated with the topological surface states have been observed in these half-Heusler candidates due to the dominating contribution from bulk electrical conductance. Here we show that, by reducing the mobility of bulk carriers, a two-dimensional (2D) weak antilocalization (WAL) effect, one of the hallmarks of topological surface states, was experimentally revealed from the tilted magnetic field dependence of magnetoconductance in a topologically nontrivial semimetal LuPdBi. Besides the observation of a 2D WAL effect, a superconducting transition was revealed at Tc~1.7 K in the same bulk LuPdBi. Quantitative analysis within the framework of a generalized BCS theory leads to the conclusion that the noncentrosymmetric superconductivity of LuPdBi is fully gapped with a possibly unconventional pairing character. The co-existence of superconductivity and the transport signature of topological surface states in the same bulk alloy suggests that LuPdBi represents a very promising candidate as a topological superconductor.

Future Influence Ranking of Scientific Literature

Researchers or students entering a emerging research area are particularly interested in what newly published papers will be most cited and which young researchers will become influential in the future, so that they can catch the most recent advances and find valuable research directions. However, predicting the future importance of scientific articles and authors is challenging due to the dynamic nature of literature networks and evolving research topics. Different from most previous studies aiming to rank the current importance of literatures and authors, we focus on \emph{ranking the future popularity of new publications and young researchers} by proposing a unified ranking model to combine various available information. Specifically, we first propose to extract two kinds of text features, words and words co-occurrence to characterize innovative papers and authors. Then, instead of using static and un-weighted graphs, we construct time-aware weighted graphs to distinguish the various importance of links established at different time. Finally, by leveraging both the constructed text features and graphs, we propose a mutual reinforcement ranking framework called \emph{MRFRank} to rank the future importance of papers and authors simultaneously. Experimental results on the ArnetMiner dataset show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the baselines on the metric \emph{recommendation intensity}.

Frustrating antiferromagnetic exchange interactions enhance specific valence-bond-pair motifs

We present variational results for the ground state of the antiferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg model with frustrating next-nearest-neighbour interactions. The trial wave functions employed are of resonating-valence-bond type, elaborated to account for various geometric motifs of adjacent bond pairs. The calculation is specialized to a square-lattice cluster consisting of just sixteen sites, large enough that the system can accommodate nontrivial singlet dimer correlations but small enough that exhaustive enumeration of states in the total spin zero sector is still feasible. A symbolic computation approach allows us to generate an algebraic expression for the expectation value of any observable and hence to carry out the energy optimization exactly. While we have no measurements that could unambiguously identify a spin liquid state in the controversial region at intermediate frustration, we can say that the bond-bond correlation factors that emerge do not appear to be consistent with the existence of a columnar valence bond crystal. Furthermore, our results suggest that the magnetically disordered region may accommodate two distinct phases.

Large Linear Magnetoresistance and Shubnikov-de Hass Oscillations in Single Crystals of YPdBi Heusler Topological Insulators

We report the observation of a large linear magnetoresistance (MR) and Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) quantum oscillations in single crystals of YPdBi Heusler topological insulators. Owning to the successfully obtained the high-quality YPdBi single crystals, large non-saturating linear MR of as high as 350% at 5K and over 120% at 300 K under a moderate magnetic field of 7 T is observed. In addition to the large, field-linear MR, the samples exhibit pronounced SdH quantum oscillations at low temperature. Analysis of the SdH data manifests that the high-mobility bulk electron carriers dominate the magnetotransport and are responsible for the observed large linear MR in YPdBi crystals. These findings imply that the Heusler-based topological insulators have superiorities for investigating the novel quantum transport properties and developing the potential applications.

Resonating valence bond trial wave functions with both static and dynamically determined Marshall sign structure

We construct energy-optimized resonating valence bond wavefunctions as a means to sketch out the zero-temperature phase diagram of the square-lattice quantum Heisenberg model with competing nearest- (J1) and next-nearest-neighbour (J2) interactions. Our emphasis is not on achieving an accurate representation of the magnetically disordered intermediate phase (centred on a relative coupling g = J2/J1 ~ 1/2 and whose exact nature is still controversial) but on exploring whether and how the Marshall sign structure breaks down in the vicinity of the phase boundaries. Numerical evaluation of two- and four-spin correlation functions is carried out stochastically using a worm algorithm that has been modified to operate in either of two modes: one in which the sublattice labelling is fixed beforehand and another in which the worm manipulates the current labelling so as to sample various sign conventions. Our results suggest that the disordered phase evolves continuously out of the (pi,pi) Neel phase and largely inherits its Marshall sign structure; on the other hand, the transition from the magnetically ordered (pi,0) phase is strongly first order and involves an abrupt change in the sign structure and spatial symmetry as the results of a level crossing.

Influence of tetragonal distortion on the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound LaPtBi from first principles

The electronic structures of tetragonally distorted half-Heuselr compound LaPtBi in the C1b structure are investigated in the framework of density functional theory using the full potential linearized augmented plane with local spin density approximation method. The calculation results show that both the band structures and the Fermi level can be tuned by using either compressive or tensile in-plane strain. A large bulk band gap of 0.3 eV can be induced through the application of a compressive in-pane strain in LaPtBi with the assumption of a relaxed volume of the unit cell. Our results could serve as a guidance to realize topological insulators in half-Heusler compounds by strain engineering.
