Theoretical analysis for dynamic contact angle hysteresis on chemically patterned surfaces

A dynamic wetting problem is studied for a moving thin fiber inserted in fluid and with a chemically inhomogeneous surface. A reduced model is derived for contact angle hysteresis by using the Onsager principle as an approximation tool. The model is simple and captures the essential dynamics of the contact angle. From this model we derive an upper bound of the advancing contact angle and a lower bound of the receding angle, which are verified by numerical simulations. The results are consistent with the quasi-static results. The model can also be used to understand the asymmetric dependence of the advancing and receding contact angles on the fiber velocity, which is observed recently in physical experiments reported in Guan et al Phys. Rev. Lett. 2016.

Quantum liquid from strange frustration in the trimer magnet Ba4Ir3O10

Quantum spin systems such as magnetic insulators usually show classical magnetic order, but such classical states can give way to quantum liquids with exotic entanglement through two known mechanisms of frustration: geometric frustration in lattices with triangle motifs, and spin-orbit-coupling frustration in the exactly solvable quantum liquid of Kitaev's honeycomb lattice. Here we present the experimental observation of a new kind of frustrated quantum liquid arising in an unlikely place: the magnetic insulator Ba4Ir3O10 where Ir3O12 trimers form an unfrustrated square lattice. Experimentally we find a quantum liquid state persisting down to 0.2 K that is stabilized by strong antiferromagnetic interaction with Curie-Weiss temperature - 766 K. The astonishing frustration parameter of 3800 is beyond any known iridate thus far. Heat capacity and thermal conductivity are both linear at low temperatures, a familiar feature in metals but here in an insulator pointing to an exotic quantum liquid state. A mere 2% Sr substitution for Ba produces long-range order at 130 K and destroys the linear-T features. Although the Ir4+(5d5) ions in Ba4Ir3O10 appear to form Ir3O12 trimers of face-sharing IrO6 octahedra, we propose that intra-trimer exchange is reduced and the lattice recombines into an array of coupled 1D chains with additional spins. An extreme limit of decoupled 1D chains can explain most but not all of the striking experimental observations, indicating that the inter-chain coupling plays an important role in the novel frustration mechanism leading to this quantum liquid.

Lightweight Container-based User Environment

Modern operating systems all support multi-users that users could share a computer simultaneously and not affect each other. However, there are some limitations. For example, privacy problem exists that users are visible to each other in terms of running processes and files. Moreover, users have little freedom to customize the system environment. Last, it is a burden for system administrator to safely manage and update system environment while satisfying multiple users. Facing the above problems, this paper proposes CUE, a Lightweight Container-based User Environment. CUE proposes a new notion that stands in between application container and operating system container:user container. CUE is able to give users more flexibility to customize their environment, achieve privacy isolation, and make system update easier and safer. Its goal is to optimize and enhance the multi-user notion of current operating system and being lightweight. Moreover, it is able to facilitate application deployment in high performance clusters. It is currently deployed in NUDT's Tianhe E prototype supercomputer. Experiment results show that it introduces negligible overhead.

Magnetically-Sensitive Valley Polarization Reversal and Revival of Defect-Localized Excitons in WSe2-WS2

Manipulating and reserving the valley pseudospin of excitons is one core aim in the two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). However, due to the strong electron-hole exchange and spin-orbit coupling interactions, the exciton recombination lifetime is subject to picosecond timescale intrinsically, and the valley polarization is hardly modulated by a moderate magnetic field. It is fortunate that interlayer and defect-localized excitons promise to overcome these difficulties by suppressing the above interactions. Here we clearly reveal that the valley polarization can be reversed and revived in the defect-localized excitons with a microsecond lifetime in AB-stacked WSe2-WS2 heterobilayer. Specifically, for the interlayer defect-localized exciton, the valley polarization is reversed and can be efficiently enhanced by a weak out-of-plane magnetic field (<0.4 T). In sharp contrast, the valley polarization of the intralayer defect-localized exciton can revive after a fast decay process and follows the direction of the moderate out-of-plane magnetic field (<3 T). We explain the reversed valley polarization with highly magnetic sensitivity by the delocalization of defect-localized holes under a weak magnetic field and the revival of valley polarization by the valley Zeeman effect under a moderate magnetic field. Our results demonstrate that the valley pseudospin of defect-localized excitons can be efficiently modulated by the external magnetic field and enrich both the understanding and the technical approaches on manipulating the valley dynamics in TMDs and their heterostructure.

STA: Adversarial Attacks on Siamese Trackers

Recently, the majority of visual trackers adopt Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) as their backbone to achieve high tracking accuracy. However, less attention has been paid to the potential adversarial threats brought by CNN, including Siamese network. In this paper, we first analyze the existing vulnerabilities in Siamese trackers and propose the requirements for a successful adversarial attack. On this basis, we formulate the adversarial generation problem and propose an end-to-end pipeline to generate a perturbed texture map for the 3D object that causes the trackers to fail. Finally, we conduct thorough experiments to verify the effectiveness of our algorithm. Experiment results show that adversarial examples generated by our algorithm can successfully lower the tracking accuracy of victim trackers and even make them drift off. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to generate 3D adversarial examples on visual trackers.

Emergence of topologically protected states in MoTe$_{2}$ Weyl semimetal with layer stacking order

Electronic tunability in crystals with weakly-bound layers can be achieved through layer stacking order. One such example is MoTe$_2$, where the low-temperature orthorhombic T$_d$ phase is topological and host to Weyl quasiparticles. The transition mechanism to the non-trivial topology is elucidated by single crystal neutron diffraction. Upon cooling from the monoclinic 1T$\prime$ to the T$_d$ phase, diffuse scattering accompanies the transition, arising from random, in-plane layer displacements, and dissipates upon entering the T$_d$ phase. Diffuse scattering is observed only in the H0L plane due to irreversible layer shifts along the c-axis that break the centrosymmetry of the monoclinic lattice.

Global Solution for Gas-Liquid Flow of 1-D van der Waals Equation of State with Large Initial Data

This paper is concerned with a diffuse interface model for the gas-liquid phase transition. The model consists the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with van der Waals equation of state and a modified Allen-Cahn equation. The global existence and uniqueness of strong solution with the periodic boundary condition (or the mixed boundary condition) in one dimensional space is proved for large initial data. Furthermore, the phase variable and the density of the gas-liquid mixture are proved to stay in the physical reasonable interval. The proofs are based on the elementary energy method and the maximum principle, but with new development, where some techniques are introduced to establish the uniform bounds of the density and to treat the non-convexity of the pressure function.

Weighted Nonlocal Total Variation in Image Processing

In this paper, a novel weighted nonlocal total variation (WNTV) method is proposed. Compared to the classical nonlocal total variation methods, our method modifies the energy functional to introduce a weight to balance between the labeled sets and unlabeled sets. With extensive numerical examples in semi-supervised clustering, image inpainting and image colorization, we demonstrate that WNTV provides an effective and efficient method in many image processing and machine learning problems.

Entanglement-enhanced quantum metrology in a noisy environment

Quantum metrology overcomes standard precision limits and plays a central role in science and technology. Practically it is vulnerable to imperfections such as decoherence. Here, we demonstrate quantum metrology for noisy channels such that entanglement with ancillary qubits enhances the quantum Fisher information for phase estimation but not otherwise. Our photonic experiment covers a range of noise for various types of channels, including for two randomly alternating channels such that assisted entanglement fails for each noisy channel individually. We have simulated noisy channels by implementing space-multiplexed dual interferometers with quantum photonic inputs. We have demonstrated the advantage of entanglement-assisted protocols in phase estimation experiment run with either single-probe or multi-probe approach. These results establish that entanglement with ancillae is a valuable approach for delivering quantum-enhanced metrology. Our new approach to entanglement-assisted quantum metrology via a simple linear-optical interferometric network with easy-to-prepare photonic inputs provides a path towards practical quantum metrology.

Edge optical scattering of two-dimensional materials

Rayleigh scattering has shown powerful abilities to study electron resonances of nanomaterials regardless of the specific shapes. In analogy to Rayleigh scattering, here we demonstrate that edge optical scattering from two-dimensional (2D) materials also has the similar advantage. Our result shows that, in visible spectral range, as long as the lateral size of a 2D sample is larger than 2 μm, its edge scattering is essentially a knife-edge diffraction, and the intensity distribution of the high-angle scattering in $\mathbf{k}$ space is nearly independent of the lateral size and the shape of the 2D samples. The high-angle edge scattering spectra are purely determined by the intrinsic dielectric properties of the 2D materials. As an example, we experimentally verify this feature in single-layer $MoS_{2}$, in which A and B excitons are clearly detected in the edge scattering spectra, and the scattering images in $\mathbf{k}$ space and real space are consistent with our theoretical model. This study shows that the edge scattering is a highly practical and efficient method for optical studies of various 2D materials as well as thin films with clear edges.

Doping driven structural distortion in the bilayer iridate (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$

Neutron single crystal diffraction and rotational anisotropy optical second harmonic generation data are presented resolving the nature of the structural distortion realized in electron-doped (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ with $x=0.035$ and $x=0.071$. Once electrons are introduced into the bilayer spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, previous studies have identified the appearance of a low temperature structural distortion and have suggested the presence of a competing electronic instability in the phase diagram of this material. Our measurements resolve a lowering of the structural symmetry from monoclinic $C2/c$ to monoclinic $P2_1/c$ and the creation of two unique Ir sites within the chemical unit cell as the lattice distorts below a critical temperature $T_S$. Details regarding the modifications to oxygen octahedral rotations and tilting through the transition are discussed as well as the evolution of the low temperature distorted lattice as a function of carrier substitution.

An efficient threshold dynamics method for wetting on rough surfaces

The threshold dynamics method developed by Merriman, Bence and Osher (MBO) is an efficient method for simulating the motion by mean curvature flow when the interface is away from the solid boundary. Direct generalization of MBO-type methods to the wetting problem with interfaces intersecting the solid boundary is not easy because solving the heat equation in a general domain with a wetting boundary condition is not as efficient as it is with the original MBO method. The dynamics of the contact point also follows a different law compared with the dynamics of the interface away from the boundary. In this paper, we develop an efficient volume preserving threshold dynamics method for simulating wetting on rough surfaces. This method is based on minimization of the weighted surface area functional over an extended domain that includes the solid phase. The method is simple, stable with $O(N \log N)$ complexity per time step and is not sensitive to the inhomogeneity or roughness of the solid boundary.

Lattice dynamics and the nature of structural transitions in organolead halide perovskites

Organolead halide perovskites are a family of hybrid organic-inorganic compounds whose remarkable optoelectronic properties have been under intensive scrutiny in recent years. Here we use inelastic X-ray scattering to study low-energy lattice excitations in single crystals of methylammonium lead iodide and bromide perovskites. Our findings confirm the displacive nature of the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition, which is further shown, using neutron and x-ray diffraction, to be close to a tricritical point. Lastly, we detect quasistatic symmetry-breaking nanodomains persisting well into the high-temperature cubic phase, possibly stabilized by local defects. These findings reveal key structural properties of these materials, and also bear important implications for carrier dynamics across an extended temperature range relevant for photovoltaic applications.

An efficient iterative thresholding method for image segmentation

We proposed an efficient iterative thresholding method for multi-phase image segmentation. The algorithm is based on minimizing piecewise constant Mumford-Shah functional in which the contour length (or perimeter) is approximated by a non-local multi-phase energy. The minimization problem is solved by an iterative method. Each iteration consists of computing simple convolutions followed by a thresholding step. The algorithm is easy to implement and has the optimal complexity $O(N \log N)$ per iteration. We also show that the iterative algorithm has the total energy decaying property. We present some numerical results to show the efficiency of our method.

Simultaneous Metal-Insulator and Antiferromagnetic Transitions in Orthorhombic Perovskite Iridate Sr0.94Ir0.78O2.68 Single Crystals

The orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3 is a semimetal, an intriguing exception in iridates where the strong spin-orbit interaction coupled with electron correlations tends to impose a novel insulating state. We report results of our investigation of bulk single-crystal Sr0.94Ir0.78O2.68 or Ir-deficient, orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3. It retains the same crystal structure as stoichiometric SrIrO3 but exhibits a sharp, simultaneous antiferromagnetic (AFM) and metal-insulator (MI) transition at 185 K. Above it, the basal-plane resistivity features an extended regime of almost linear-temperature dependence up to 800 K but the strong electronic anisotropy renders an insulating behavior in the out-of-plane resistivity. The Hall resistivity undergoes an abrupt sign change and grows below 40 K, which along with the Sommerfeld constant of 20 mJ/mole K2 suggests a multiband effect. All results including our first-principles calculations underscore a delicacy of the metallic state in SrIrO3 that is in close proximity to an AFM insulating state. The contrasting ground states in isostructural Sr0.94Ir0.78O2.68 and SrIrO3 illustrate a critical role of even slight lattice distortions in rebalancing the ground state in the iridates. Finally, the observed simultaneous AFM and MI transitions reveal a direct correlation between the magnetic transition and formation of a charge gap in the iridate, which is conspicuously absent in Sr2IrO4.

Structural investigation of the bilayer iridate Sr3Ir2O7

A complete structural solution of the bilayer iridate compound Sr3Ir2O7 presently remains outstanding. Previously reported structures for this compound vary and all fail to explain weak structural violations observed in neutron scattering measurements as well as the presence of a net ferromagnetic moment in the basal plane. In this paper, we present single crystal neutron diffraction and rotational anisotropy second harmonic generation measurements unveiling a lower, monoclinic symmetry inherent to Sr3Ir2O7 . Combined with density functional theory, our measurements identify the correct structural space group as No. 15 (C2/c) and provide clarity regarding the local symmetry of Ir 4+ cations within this spin-orbit Mott material.

Structure symmetry determination and magnetic evolution in $\rm Sr_2Ir_{1-x}Rh_{x}O_4$

We use single-crystal neutron diffraction to determine the crystal structure symmetry and the magnetic evolution in the rhodium doped iridates $\rm Sr_2Ir_{1-x}Rh_{x}O_4$ ($0\leq x \leq 0.16$). Throughout this doping range, the crystal structure retains a tetragonal symmetry (space group $I4_1/a$) with two distinct magnetic Ir sites in the unit cell forming staggered $\rm IrO_6$ rotation. Upon Rh doping, the magnetic order is suppressed and the magnetic moment of Ir$^{4+}$ is reduced from 0.21 $\rm μ_B$/Ir for $x=0$ to 0.18 $\rm μ_B$/Ir for $x=0.12$. The magnetic structure at $x=0.12$ is different from that of the parent compound while the moments remain in the basal plane.

Average Density of States in Disordered Graphene systems

In this paper, the average density of states (ADOS) with a binary alloy disorder in disordered graphene systems are calculated based on the recursion method. We observe an obvious resonant peak caused by interactions with surrounding impurities and an anti-resonance dip in ADOS curves near the Dirac point. We also find that the resonance energy (Er) and the dip position are sensitive to the concentration of disorders (x) and their on-site potentials (v). An linear relation, not only holds when the impurity concentration is low but this relation can be further extended to high impurity concentration regime with certain constraints. We also calculate the ADOS with a finite density of vacancies and compare our results with the previous theoretical results.
