The Nuclear Region of NGC1365: Star Formation, Negative Feedback, and Outflow Structure

High-resolution observations of ionized and molecular gas in the nuclear regions of galaxies are indispensable for delineating the interplay of star formation, gaseous inflows, stellar radiation, and feedback processes. Combining our new ALMA band 3 mapping and archival VLT/MUSE data, we present a spatially resolved analysis of molecular and ionized gas in the central 5.4 Kpc region of NGC 1365. We find the star formation rate/efficiency (SFR/SFE) in the inner circumnuclear ring is about 0.4/1.1 dex higher than in the outer regions. At a linear resolution of 180 pc, we obtain a super-linear Kennicutt-Schmidt law, demonstrating a steeper slope (1.96$\pm$0.14) than previous results presumably based on lower-resolution observations. Compared to the northeastern counterpart, the southwestern dust lane shows lower SFE, but denser molecular gas, and larger virial parameters. This is consistent with an interpretation of negative feedback from AGN and/or starburst, in the sense that the radiation/winds can heat and interact with the molecular gas even in relatively dense regions. After subtracting the circular motion component of the molecular gas and the stellar rotation, we detect two prominent non-circular motion components of molecular and ionized hydrogen gas, reaching a line-of-sight velocity of up to 100 km/s. We conclude that the winds or shocked gas from the central AGN may expel the low-density molecular gas and diffuse ionized gas on the surface of the rotating disk.

Riemannian manifolds with entire Grauert tube are rationally elliptic

It was conjectured by Bott-Grove-Halperin that a compact simply connected Riemannian manifold $M$ with nonnegative sectional curvature is rationally elliptic. We confirm this conjecture under the stronger assumption that $M$ has entire Grauert tube,i.e.,$M$ is a real analytic Riemannian manifold that has a unique adapted complex structure defined on the whole tangent bundle $TM$.

NuSTAR Non-detection of a Faint Active Galactic Nucleus in an Ultraluminous IR Galaxy with Kpc-scale Fast Wind

Large-scale outflows are generally considered as a possible evidence that active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can severely affect their host galaxies. Recently an ultraluminous IR galaxy (ULIRG) at $z=0.49$, AKARI J0916248+073034, was found to have a galaxy-scale [OIII] $λ$5007 outflow with one of the highest energy-ejection rates at $z<1.6$. However, the central AGN activity estimated from its torus mid-IR (MIR) radiation is weak relative to the luminous [OIII] emission. In this work we report the first NuSTAR hard X-ray follow-up of this ULIRG to constrain its current AGN luminosity. The intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity shows a 90% upper-limit of $3.0\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ assuming Compton-thick obscuration ($N_{\rm H}=1.5\times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$), which is only 3.6% of the luminosity expected from the extinction corrected [OIII] luminosity. With the NuSTAR observation, we succeed to identify that this ULIRG has a most extreme case of X-ray deficit among local ULIRGs. A possible scenario to explain the drastic declining in both of the corona (X-ray) and torus (MIR) is that the primary radiation from the AGN accretion disk is currently in a fading status, as a consequence of a powerful nuclear wind suggested by its powerful ionized outflow in the galaxy scale.

A conformal characterization of manifolds of constant sectional curvature

A special case of the main result states that a complete $1$-connected Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$ is isometric to one of the models $\mathbb R^n$, $S^n(c)$, $\mathbb H^n(-c)$ of constant curvature if and only if every $p\in M^n$ is a non-degenerate maximum of a germ of smooth functions whose Riemannian gradient is a conformal vector field.

Morse-Novikov cohomology of almost nonnegatively curved manifolds

Let $M^n$ be a closed manifold of almost nonnegative sectional curvature and nonzero first de Rham cohomology group. For any $[θ] \in H^1_{dR}(M^n), [θ] \neq 0$, we show that the Morse- Novikov cohomology group $H^p(M^n, θ)$ vanishes for any $p$. A similar result holds for a closed manifold of almost nonnegative Ricci curvature under the additional assumption that its curvature operator is uniformly bounded from below.

Discovery of a strong ionized-gas outflow in an AKARI-selected Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxy at z = 0.5

In order to construct a sample of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, with infrared luminosity, $L_{\rm IR} > 10^{12}$ L$_{\odot}$) at 0.5 < z < 1, we are conducting an optical follow-up program for bright 90-$μ$m FIR sources with a faint optical (i < 20) counterpart selected in the AKARI Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) Bright Source catalog (Ver.2). AKARI-FIS-V2 J0916248+073034, identified as a ULIRG at z = 0.49 in the spectroscopic follow-up observation, indicates signatures of an extremely strong outflow in its emission line profiles. Its [OIII] 5007Å emission line shows FWHM of 1830 km s$^{-1}$ and velocity shift of -770 km s$^{-1}$ in relative to the stellar absorption lines. Furthermore, low-ionization [OII] 3726Å 3729Å doublet also shows large FWHM of 910 km s$^{-1}$ and velocity shift of -380 km s$^{-1}$. After the removal of an unresolved nuclear component, the long-slit spectroscopy 2D image possibly shows that the outflow extends to radius of 4 kpc. The mass outflow and energy ejection rates are estimated to be 500 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and $4\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, respectively, which imply that the outflow is among the most powerful ones observed in ULIRGs and QSOs at 0.3 < z < 1.6. The co-existence of the strong outflow and intense star formation (star formation rate of 990 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) indicates that the feedback of the strong outflow has not severely affect the star-forming region of the galaxy.

Fast Computation of Graph Edit Distance

The graph edit distance (GED) is a well-established distance measure widely used in many applications. However, existing methods for the GED computation suffer from several drawbacks including oversized search space, huge memory consumption, and lots of expensive backtracking. In this paper, we present BSS_GED, a novel vertex-based mapping method for the GED computation. First, we create a small search space by reducing the number of invalid and redundant mappings involved in the GED computation. Then, we utilize beam-stack search combined with two heuristics to efficiently compute GED, achieving a flexible trade-off between available memory and expensive backtracking. Extensive experiments demonstrate that BSS GED is highly efficient for the GED computation on sparse as well as dense graphs and outperforms the state-of-the-art GED methods. In addition, we also apply BSS_GED to the graph similarity search problem and the practical results confirm its efficiency.

Symplectic aspects of polar actions

An isometric compact group action $G \times (M,g) \rightarrow (M,g)$ is called polar if there exists a closed embedded submanifold $Σ\subseteq M$ which meets all orbits orthogonally. Let $Π$ be the associated generalized Weyl group. We study the properties of the lifting action $G$ on the cotangent bundle $T^*M$. In particular, we show that the restriction map $(C^{\infty}(T^*M))^G \rightarrow (C^{\infty}(T^* Σ))^Π$ is a surjective homomorphism of Poisson algebras. As a corollary, the singular symplectic reductions $T^*M // G $ and $T^* Σ// Π$ are isomorphic as stratified symplectic spaces, which gives a partial answer to a conjecture of Lerman, Montgomery and Sjamaar.

MSQ-Index: A Succinct Index for Fast Graph Similarity Search

Graph similarity search has received considerable attention in many applications, such as bioinformatics, data mining, pattern recognition, and social networks. Existing methods for this problem have limited scalability because of the huge amount of memory they consume when handling very large graph databases with millions or billions of graphs. In this paper, we study the problem of graph similarity search under the graph edit distance constraint. We present a space-efficient index structure based upon the q-gram tree that incorporates succinct data structures and hybrid encoding to achieve improved query time performance with minimal space usage. Specifically, the space usage of our index requires only 5%-15% of the previous state-of-the-art indexing size on the tested data while at the same time achieving 2-3 times acceleration in query time with small data sets. We also boost the query performance by augmenting the global filter with range search, which allows us to perform a query in a reduced region. In addition, we propose two effective filters that combine degree structures and label structures. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed approach is superior in space and competitive in filtering to the state-of-the-art approaches. To the best of our knowledge, our index is the first in-memory index for this problem that successfully scales to cope with the large dataset of 25 million chemical structure graphs from the PubChem dataset.

Real affine varieties of nonnegative curvature

Let $X_{\mathbb{C}}$ be a smooth real affine variety with compact real points $X_{\mathbb{R}}$. We show that $X_{\mathbb{C}}$ is diffeomorphic to the normal bundle of $X_{\mathbb{R}}$ provided that $X_{\mathbb{C}}$ admits a complete Riemannian metric of nonnegative sectional curvature which is also invariant under the conjugation.

Finiteness of prescribed fibers of local biholomorphisms: a geometric approach

Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of complex dimension at least two, $F : X \rightarrow \mathbb{C}^n$ a local biholomorphism, and $q \in F(X)$. In this paper we formulate sufficient conditions involving only objects naturally associated to $q$, in order for the fiber over $q$ to be finite. Assume that $F^{-1}(l)$ is 1-connected for the generic complex line $l$ containing $q$, and $F^{-1}(l)$ has finitely many components whenever $l$ is an exceptional line through $q$. Using arguments from topology and differential geometry, we establish a sharp estimate on the size of $F^{-1}(q)$. It follows that for $n \geq 2$, a local biholomorphism of $X$ onto $\mathbb{C}^n$ is invertible if and only if the pull-back of every complex line is 1-connected.

Riemannian submersions from compact four manifolds

We show that under certain conditions, a nontrivial Riemannian submersion from positively curved four manifolds does not exist. This gives a partial answer to a conjecture due to Fred Wilhelm. We also prove a rigidity theorem for Riemannian submersions with totally geodesic fibers from compact four-dimensional Einstein manifolds.

Rigidity theorems for submetries in positive curvature

We derive general structure and rigidity theorems for submetries $f: M \to X$, where $M$ is a Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature $\sec M \ge 1$. When applied to a non-trivial Riemannian submersion, it follows that $diam X \leq π/2 $. In case of equality, there is a Riemannian submersion $\mathbb{S} \to M$ from a unit sphere, and as a consequence, $f$ is known up to metric congruence. A similar rigidity theorem also holds in the general context of Riemannian foliations.

On the fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds

We study the fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds, which we call Sasaki groups. It is shown that all known K$\ddot{a}$hler groups are Sasaki, in particular, all finite groups are Sasaki. On the other hand, we show there exists many restrictions on the fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds. We also study the Abel-Jacobi map of a compact Sasakian manifold and its applications to Sasaki groups.

Minimal volume and simplicial norm of visibility n-manifolds and compact 3-manifolds

Theorem A. Let $M^n$ denote a closed Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature and let $\tilde M^n$ be the universal cover of $M^n$ with the lifted metric. Suppose that the universal cover $\tilde M^n$ contains no totally geodesic embedded Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ (i.e., $M^n$ is a visibility manifold). Then Gromov's simplicial volume $\| M^n \|$ is non-zero. Consequently, $M^n$ is non-collapsible while keeping Ricci curvature bounded from below. More precisely, if $Ric_g \ge -(n-1)$, then $vol(M^n, g) \ge \frac{1}{(n-1)^n n!} \| M^n \| > 0. Theorem B. (Perelman) Let $M^3$ be a closed a-spherical 3-manifold ($K(π, 1)$-space) with the fundamental group $Γ$. Suppose that $Γ$ contains no subgroups isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z}$. Then $M^3$ is diffeomorphic to a compact quotient of real hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$, i.e., $M^3 \equiv \mathbb{H}^3/Γ$. Consequently, $MinVol(M^3) \ge {1/24}\| M^3 \| > 0$. Minimal volume and simplicial norm of all other compact 3-manifolds without boundary and {\it singular} spaces will also be discussed.

Enhanced thermopower in an intergrowth cobalt oxide Li$_{0.48}$Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$

We report the measurements of thermopower, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity in a complex cobalt oxide Li$_{0.48}$Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$, whose crystal structure can be viewed as an intergrowth of the O3 phase of Li$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ and the P2 phase of Na$_{y}$CoO$_{2}$ along the c axis. The compound shows large room-temperature thermopower of $\sim$180 $μ$V/K, which is substantially higher than those of Li$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ and Na$_{y}$CoO$_{2}$. The figure of merit for the polycrystalline sample increases rapidly with increasing temperature, and it achieves nearly 10$^{-4}$ K$^{-1}$ at 300 K, suggesting that Li$_{x}$Na$_{y}$CoO$_{2}$ system is a promising candidate for thermoelectric applications.
