Network Combination to Persistence of High-dimensional Delayed Complex Balanced Mass-action Systems

Complex balanced mass-action systems (CBMASs) are of great importance in the filed of biochemical reaction networks. However analyzing the persistence of these networks with high dimensions and time delays poses significant challenges. To tackle this, we propose a novel approach that combines 1-dimensional (1d) or 2d delayed CBMASs (DeCBMASs) and introduces inheritable combination methods based on the relationship between semilocking sets and intersecting species. These methods account for various scenarios, including cases where the set of intersecting species is empty, or there are no common species in non-trivial semilocking sets and the intersecting species set, or when special forms are present. By utilizing these combination methods, we derive sufficient conditions for the persistence of high-dimensional DeCBMASs. This significantly expands the known class of delayed chemical reaction network systems that exhibit persistence. The effectiveness of our proposed approach is also demonstrated through several examples, highlighting its practical applicability in real-world scenarios. This research contributes to advancing the understanding of high-dimensional DeCBMASs and offers insights into their persistent behavior.

A Peer-to-peer Federated Continual Learning Network for Improving CT Imaging from Multiple Institutions

Deep learning techniques have been widely used in computed tomography (CT) but require large data sets to train networks. Moreover, data sharing among multiple institutions is limited due to data privacy constraints, which hinders the development of high-performance DL-based CT imaging models from multi-institutional collaborations. Federated learning (FL) strategy is an alternative way to train the models without centralizing data from multi-institutions. In this work, we propose a novel peer-to-peer federated continual learning strategy to improve low-dose CT imaging performance from multiple institutions. The newly proposed method is called peer-to-peer continual FL with intermediate controllers, i.e., icP2P-FL. Specifically, different from the conventional FL model, the proposed icP2P-FL does not require a central server that coordinates training information for a global model. In the proposed icP2P-FL method, the peer-to-peer federated continual learning is introduced wherein the DL-based model is continually trained one client after another via model transferring and inter institutional parameter sharing due to the common characteristics of CT data among the clients. Furthermore, an intermediate controller is developed to make the overall training more flexible. Numerous experiments were conducted on the AAPM low-dose CT Grand Challenge dataset and local datasets, and the experimental results showed that the proposed icP2P-FL method outperforms the other comparative methods both qualitatively and quantitatively, and reaches an accuracy similar to a model trained with pooling data from all the institutions.

Gd-Based Solvated Shells for Defect Passivation of CsPbBr$_3$ Nanoplatelets Enabling Efficient Color-Saturated Blue Electroluminescence

Reduced-dimensional CsPbBr$_3$ nanoplatelets (NPLs) are promising candidates for color-saturated blue emitters, yet their electroluminescence performance is hampered by non-radiative recombination, which is associated with bromine vacancies. Here, we show that a post-synthetic treatment of CsPbBr$_3$ NPLs with GdBr$_3$-dimethylformamide (DMF) can effectively eliminate defects while preserving the color. According to a combined experimental and theoretical study, Gd$^{3+}$ ions are less reactive with NPLs as a result of compact interaction between them and DMF, and this stable Gd$^{3+}$-DMF solvation structure makes Brions more available and allows them to move more freely. Consequently, defects are rapidly passivated and photoluminescence quantum yield increases dramatically (from 35 to ~100%), while the surface ligand density and emission color remain unchanged. The result is a remarkable electroluminescence efficiency of 2.4% (at 464 nm), one of the highest in pure blue perovskite NPL light-emitting diodes. It is noteworthy that the conductive NPL film shows a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 80%, demonstrating NPLs' significant electroluminescence potential with further device structure design.

SIFTER: A Task-specific Alignment Strategy for Enhancing Sentence Embeddings

The paradigm of pre-training followed by fine-tuning on downstream tasks has become the mainstream method in natural language processing tasks. Although pre-trained models have the advantage of generalization, their performance may still vary significantly across different domain tasks. This is because the data distribution in different domains varies. For example, the different parts of the sentence 'He married Smt. Dipali Ghosh in 1947 and led a very happy married life' may have different impact for downstream tasks. For similarity calculations, words such as 'led' and 'life' are more important. On the other hand, for sentiment analysis, the word 'happy' is crucial. This indicates that different downstream tasks have different levels of sensitivity to sentence components. Our starting point is to scale information of the model and data according to the specifics of downstream tasks, enhancing domain information of relevant parts for these tasks and reducing irrelevant elements for different domain tasks, called SIFTER. In the experimental part, we use the SIFTER to improve SimCSE by constructing positive sample pairs based on enhancing the sentence stem and reducing the unimportant components in the sentence, and maximize the similarity between three sentences. Similarly, SIFTER can improve the gate mechanism of the LSTM model by short-circuiting the input gate of important words so that the LSTM model remembers the important parts of the sentence. Our experiments demonstrate that SIFTER outperforms the SimCSE and LSTM baselines.

Ultra-low-loss optical interconnect enabled by topological unidirectional guided resonance

Grating couplers that interconnect photonic chips to off-chip components are of essential importance for various optoelectronics applications. Despite numerous efforts in past decades, existing grating couplers still suffer from poor energy efficiency and thus hinder photonic integration toward a larger scale. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to achieve ultra-low-loss grating coupler by employing topological unidirectional guided resonances (UGRs). Leveraging the unidirectional emitting nature of UGRs, the useless downward radiation is greatly suppressed with no mirror placed on the bottom. By engineering the dispersion and apodizing the geometry of grating, we realize a grating coupler on 340 nm silicon-on-insulator platform with a record-low-loss of 0.34 dB and bandwidth exceeding 30 nm at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm. We further show a pair of grating couplers works as optic via that interconnects two stacked photonic chips with a loss of only 0.94 dB. Our work sheds light on the feasibility of energy-efficient optical interconnect for silicon photonics, and paving the way to large-scale photonic integration for applications from optical communication to photonic computing.

High-Dimensional Vector Autoregression with Common Response and Predictor Factors

The reduced-rank vector autoregressive (VAR) model can be interpreted as a supervised factor model, where two factor modelings are simultaneously applied to response and predictor spaces. This article introduces a new model, called vector autoregression with common response and predictor factors, to explore further the common structure between the response and predictors in the VAR framework. The new model can provide better physical interpretations and improve estimation efficiency. In conjunction with the tensor operation, the model can easily be extended to any finite-order VAR model. A regularization-based method is considered for the high-dimensional estimation with the gradient descent algorithm, and its computational and statistical convergence guarantees are established. For data with pervasive cross-sectional dependence, a transformation for responses is developed to alleviate the diverging eigenvalue effect. Moreover, we consider additional sparsity structure in factor loading for the case of ultra-high dimension. Simulation experiments confirm our theoretical findings and a macroeconomic application showcases the appealing properties of the proposed model in structural analysis and forecasting.

SimHaze: game engine simulated data for real-world dehazing

Deep models have demonstrated recent success in single-image dehazing. Most prior methods consider fully supervised training and learn from paired clean and hazy images, where a hazy image is synthesized based on a clean image and its estimated depth map. This paradigm, however, can produce low-quality hazy images due to inaccurate depth estimation, resulting in poor generalization of the trained models. In this paper, we explore an alternative approach for generating paired clean-hazy images by leveraging computer graphics. Using a modern game engine, our approach renders crisp clean images and their precise depth maps, based on which high-quality hazy images can be synthesized for training dehazing models. To this end, we present SimHaze: a new synthetic haze dataset. More importantly, we show that training with SimHaze alone allows the latest dehazing models to achieve significantly better performance in comparison to previous dehazing datasets. Our dataset and code will be made publicly available.

Topological Kinetic Crossover in a Nanomagnet Array

Ergodic kinetics, which are critical to equilibrium thermodynamics, can be constrained by a system's topology. We study a model nanomagnetic array in which such constraints visibly affect the behavior. In this system, magnetic excitations connect into thermally active one-dimensional strings whose motion can be imaged in real time. At high temperatures, we observe the merging, breaking, and reconnecting of strings, resulting in the system transitioning between topologically distinct configurations. Below a crossover temperature, the string motion is dominated by simple changes in length and shape. In this low temperature regime, the system is energetically stable because of its inability to explore all possible topological configurations. This kinetic crossover suggests a generalizable conception of topologically broken ergodicity and limited equilibration.

LabelVizier: Interactive Validation and Relabeling for Technical Text Annotations

With the rapid accumulation of text data produced by data-driven techniques, the task of extracting "data annotations"--concise, high-quality data summaries from unstructured raw text--has become increasingly important. The recent advances in weak supervision and crowd-sourcing techniques provide promising solutions to efficiently create annotations (labels) for large-scale technical text data. However, such annotations may fail in practice because of the change in annotation requirements, application scenarios, and modeling goals, where label validation and relabeling by domain experts are required. To approach this issue, we present LabelVizier, a human-in-the-loop workflow that incorporates domain knowledge and user-specific requirements to reveal actionable insights into annotation flaws, then produce better-quality labels for large-scale multi-label datasets. We implement our workflow as an interactive notebook to facilitate flexible error profiling, in-depth annotation validation for three error types, and efficient annotation relabeling on different data scales. We evaluated the efficiency and generalizability of our workflow with two use cases and four expert reviews. The results indicate that LabelVizier is applicable in various application scenarios and assist domain experts with different knowledge backgrounds to efficiently improve technical text annotation quality.

ConceptEVA: Concept-Based Interactive Exploration and Customization of Document Summaries

With the most advanced natural language processing and artificial intelligence approaches, effective summarization of long and multi-topic documents -- such as academic papers -- for readers from different domains still remains a challenge. To address this, we introduce ConceptEVA, a mixed-initiative approach to generate, evaluate, and customize summaries for long and multi-topic documents. ConceptEVA incorporates a custom multi-task longformer encoder decoder to summarize longer documents. Interactive visualizations of document concepts as a network reflecting both semantic relatedness and co-occurrence help users focus on concepts of interest. The user can select these concepts and automatically update the summary to emphasize them. We present two iterations of ConceptEVA evaluated through an expert review and a within-subjects study. We find that participants' satisfaction with customized summaries through ConceptEVA is higher than their own manually-generated summary, while incorporating critique into the summaries proved challenging. Based on our findings, we make recommendations for designing summarization systems incorporating mixed-initiative interactions.

Capturing persistence of delayed complex balanced chemical reaction systems via decomposition of semilocking sets

With the increasing complexity of time-delayed systems, the diversification of boundary types of chemical reaction systems poses a challenge for persistence analysis. This paper focuses on delayed complex balanced mass action systems (DeCBMAS) and derives that some boundaries of a DeCBMAS can not contain an $ω$-limit point of some trajectory with positive initial point by using the method of semilocking set decomposition and the property of the facet, further expanding the range of persistence of delayed complex balanced systems. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of semilocking set decomposition to address the complex boundaries and offer insights into the persistence analysis of delayed chemical reaction network systems.

Efficient Map Sparsification Based on 2D and 3D Discretized Grids

Localization in a pre-built map is a basic technique for robot autonomous navigation. Existing mapping and localization methods commonly work well in small-scale environments. As a map grows larger, however, more memory is required and localization becomes inefficient. To solve these problems, map sparsification becomes a practical necessity to acquire a subset of the original map for localization. Previous map sparsification methods add a quadratic term in mixed-integer programming to enforce a uniform distribution of selected landmarks, which requires high memory capacity and heavy computation. In this paper, we formulate map sparsification in an efficient linear form and select uniformly distributed landmarks based on 2D discretized grids. Furthermore, to reduce the influence of different spatial distributions between the mapping and query sequences, which is not considered in previous methods, we also introduce a space constraint term based on 3D discretized grids. The exhaustive experiments in different datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods in both efficiency and localization performance. The relevant codes will be released at https://github.com/fishmarch/SLAM_Map_Compression.

Variational Reasoning over Incomplete Knowledge Graphs for Conversational Recommendation

Conversational recommender systems (CRSs) often utilize external knowledge graphs (KGs) to introduce rich semantic information and recommend relevant items through natural language dialogues. However, original KGs employed in existing CRSs are often incomplete and sparse, which limits the reasoning capability in recommendation. Moreover, only few of existing studies exploit the dialogue context to dynamically refine knowledge from KGs for better recommendation. To address the above issues, we propose the Variational Reasoning over Incomplete KGs Conversational Recommender (VRICR). Our key idea is to incorporate the large dialogue corpus naturally accompanied with CRSs to enhance the incomplete KGs; and perform dynamic knowledge reasoning conditioned on the dialogue context. Specifically, we denote the dialogue-specific subgraphs of KGs as latent variables with categorical priors for adaptive knowledge graphs refactor. We propose a variational Bayesian method to approximate posterior distributions over dialogue-specific subgraphs, which not only leverages the dialogue corpus for restructuring missing entity relations but also dynamically selects knowledge based on the dialogue context. Finally, we infuse the dialogue-specific subgraphs to decode the recommendation and responses. We conduct experiments on two benchmark CRSs datasets. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Nonparametric Quantile Regression for Homogeneity Pursuit in Panel Data Models

Many panel data have the latent subgroup effect on individuals, and it is important to correctly identify these groups since the efficiency of resulting estimators can be improved significantly by pooling the information of individuals within each group. However, the currently assumed parametric and semiparametric relationship between the response and predictors may be misspecified, which leads to a wrong grouping result, and the nonparametric approach hence can be considered to avoid such mistakes. Moreover, the response may depend on predictors in different ways at various quantile levels, and the corresponding grouping structure may also vary. To tackle these problems, this article proposes a nonparametric quantile regression method for homogeneity pursuit in panel data models with individual effects, and a pairwise fused penalty is used to automatically select the number of groups. The asymptotic properties are established, and an ADMM algorithm is also developed. The finite sample performance is evaluated by simulation experiments, and the usefulness of the proposed methodology is further illustrated by an empirical example.

MobilePhys: Personalized Mobile Camera-Based Contactless Physiological Sensing

Camera-based contactless photoplethysmography refers to a set of popular techniques for contactless physiological measurement. The current state-of-the-art neural models are typically trained in a supervised manner using videos accompanied by gold standard physiological measurements. However, they often generalize poorly out-of-domain examples (i.e., videos that are unlike those in the training set). Personalizing models can help improve model generalizability, but many personalization techniques still require some gold standard data. To help alleviate this dependency, in this paper, we present a novel mobile sensing system called MobilePhys, the first mobile personalized remote physiological sensing system, that leverages both front and rear cameras on a smartphone to generate high-quality self-supervised labels for training personalized contactless camera-based PPG models. To evaluate the robustness of MobilePhys, we conducted a user study with 39 participants who completed a set of tasks under different mobile devices, lighting conditions/intensities, motion tasks, and skin types. Our results show that MobilePhys significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art on-device supervised training and few-shot adaptation methods. Through extensive user studies, we further examine how does MobilePhys perform in complex real-world settings. We envision that calibrated or personalized camera-based contactless PPG models generated from our proposed dual-camera mobile sensing system will open the door for numerous future applications such as smart mirrors, fitness and mobile health applications.
