Automated Loss function Search for Class-imbalanced Node Classification

Class-imbalanced node classification tasks are prevalent in real-world scenarios. Due to the uneven distribution of nodes across different classes, learning high-quality node representations remains a challenging endeavor. The engineering of loss functions has shown promising potential in addressing this issue. It involves the meticulous design of loss functions, utilizing information about the quantities of nodes in different categories and the network's topology to learn unbiased node representations. However, the design of these loss functions heavily relies on human expert knowledge and exhibits limited adaptability to specific target tasks. In this paper, we introduce a high-performance, flexible, and generalizable automated loss function search framework to tackle this challenge. Across 15 combinations of graph neural networks and datasets, our framework achieves a significant improvement in performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, we observe that homophily in graph-structured data significantly contributes to the transferability of the proposed framework.

Modeling Supply Chain Interaction and Disruption: Insights from Real-world Data and Complex Adaptive System

In the rapidly evolving automotive industry, Systems-on-Chips (SoCs) are playing an increasingly crucial role in enhancing vehicle intelligence, connectivity, and safety features. For enterprises whose business encompasses automotive SoCs, the sustained and stable provision and receipt of SoC relevant goods or services are essential. Considering the imperative for a resilient and adaptable supply network, enterprises are concentrating their efforts on formulating strategies to address risks stemming from supply chain disruptions caused by technological obsolescence, natural disasters, and geopolitical tensions. This study presents an open supply knowledge extraction and complement approach and build a supply chain network of automotive SoC enterprises in China, which incorporates cross-domain named entity recognition under limited information, fuzzy matching of firm entities, and supply relation inferring based on knowledge graph. Subsequently, we exhibit the degree and registered capital distribution across firms, and analyze the correlations between centrality metrics in the supply chain network. Finally, based on recovery capacity and risk transfer, two interaction disruption models (IDMs) are developed to elucidate the adaptive behaviors and effect of network disruptions under various business and attack strategies. This research not only aids in exploring the complexities of Chinese automotive SoC supply chain but also enriches our understanding of the dynamics of firm behavior in this crucial industry sector.

Honda-Tate theory for log abelian varieties over finite fields

In this article we study the Honda-Tate theory for log abelian varieties over an fs log point $S=(\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbf{k}),M_S)$ for $\mathbf{k}=\mathbb{F}_q$ a finite field, generalizing the classical Honda-Tate theory for abelian varieties over $\mathbf{k}$. For the standard log point $S$, we give a complete description of the isogeny classes of such log abelian varieties using Weil $q$-numbers of weight 0,1, and 2. In the general case where $M_S$ admits a global chart $P\to\mathbf{k}$ with $P=\mathbb{N}^k$, we also give a complete description of simple isogeny classes of log abelian varieties over $S$ in terms of rational points in generalized simplices.

In silico bioactivity prediction of proteins interacting with graphene-based nanomaterials guides rational design of biosensor

Graphene based nanomaterials have attracted significant attention for their potentials in biomedical and biotechnology applications in recent years, owing to the outstanding physical and chemical properties. However, the interaction mechanism and impact on biological activity of macro and micro biomolecules still require more concerns and further research in order to enhance their applicability in biosensors, etc. Herein, an integrated method has been developed to predict the protein bioactivity performance when interacting with nanomaterials for protein based biosensor. Molecular dynamics simulation and molecular docking technique were consolidated to investigate several nanomaterials C60 fullerene, single walled carbon nanotube, pristine graphene and graphene oxide, and their effect when interacting with protein. The adsorption behavior, secondary structure changes and protein bioactivity changes were simulated, and the results of protein activity simulation were verified in combination with atomic force spectrum, circular dichroism spectrum fluorescence and electrochemical experiments. The best quantification alignment between bioactivity obtained by simulation and experiment measurements was further explored. The two proteins, RNase A and Exonuclease III, were regarded as analysis model for the proof of concept, and the prediction accuracy of protein bioactivty could reach up to 0.98.

Some dynamical properties of delayed weakly reversible mass-action systems

This paper focuses on the dynamical properties of delayed complex balanced systems. We first study the relationship between the stoichiometric compatibility classes of delayed and non-delayed systems. Using this relation we give another way to derive the existence of positive equilibrium in each stoichiometric compatibility class for delayed complex balanced systems. And if time delays are constant, the result can be generalized to weakly reversible networks. Also, by utilizing the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, we can obtain a long-time dynamical property about $ω$-limit set of the complex balanced system with constant time delays. An example is also provided to support our results.

Observation of Berry curvature in non-Hermitian system from far-field radiation

Berry curvature that describes local geometrical properties of energy bands can elucidate many fascinating phenomena in solid-state, photonic, and phononic systems, given its connection to global topological invariants such as the Chern number. Despite its significance, the observation of Berry curvature poses a substantial challenging since wavefunctions are deeply embedded within the system. Here, we theoretically propose a correspondence between the geometry of far-field radiation and the underneath band topology of non-Hermitian systems, thus providing a general method to fully capture the Berry curvature without strongly disturbing the eigenstates. We further experimentally observe the Berry curvature in a honeycomb photonic crystal slab from polarimetry measurements and quantitatively obtain the non-trivial valley Chern number. Our work reveals the feasibility of retrieving the bulk band topology from escaping photons and paves the way to exploring intriguing topological landscapes in non-Hermitian systems.

Your Large Language Model is Secretly a Fairness Proponent and You Should Prompt it Like One

The widespread adoption of large language models (LLMs) underscores the urgent need to ensure their fairness. However, LLMs frequently present dominant viewpoints while ignoring alternative perspectives from minority parties, resulting in potential biases. We hypothesize that these fairness-violating behaviors occur because LLMs express their viewpoints using a human personality that represents the majority of training data. In response to this, we validate that prompting LLMs with specific roles can allow LLMs to express diverse viewpoints. Building on this insight and observation, we develop FairThinking, a pipeline designed to automatically generate roles that enable LLMs to articulate diverse perspectives for fair expressions. To evaluate FairThinking, we create a dataset with a thousand items covering three fairness-related topics and conduct experiments on GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Llama2, and Mistral to demonstrate its superior performance.

Real-time generative design of diverse, "truly" optimized structures with controllable structural complexities

Compared with traditional design methods, generative design significantly attracts engineers in various disciplines. In thiswork, howto achieve the real-time generative design of optimized structures with various diversities and controllable structural complexities is investigated. To this end, a modified Moving Morphable Component (MMC) method together with novel strategies are adopted to generate high-quality dataset. The complexity level of optimized structures is categorized by the topological invariant. By improving the cost function, the WGAN is trained to produce optimized designs with the input of loading position and complexity level in real time. It is found that, diverse designs with a clear load transmission path and crisp boundary, even not requiring further optimization and different from any reference in the dataset, can be generated by the proposed model. This method holds great potential for future applications of machine learning enhanced intelligent design.

Multi-target Detection for Reconfigurable Holographic Surfaces Enabled Radar

Multi-target detection is one of the primary tasks in radar-based localization and sensing, typically built on phased array antennas. However, the bulky hardware in the phased array restricts its potential for enhancing detection accuracy, since the cost and power of the phased array can become unaffordable as its physical aperture scales up to pursue higher beam shaping capabilities. To resolve this issue, we propose a radar system enabled by reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHSs), a novel meta-surface antenna composed of meta-material elements with cost-effective and power-efficient hardware, which performs multi-target detection in an adaptive manner. Different from the phase-control structure in the phased array, the RHS is able to apply beamforming by controlling the radiation amplitudes of its elements. Consequently, traditional beamforming schemes designed for phased arrays cannot be directly applied to RHSs due to this structural difference. To tackle this challenge, a waveform and amplitude optimization algorithm (WAOA) is designed to jointly optimize the radar waveform and RHS amplitudes in order to improve the detection accuracy. Simulation results reveal that the proposed RHS-enabled radar increases the probability of detection by 0.13 compared to phased array radars when six iterations of adaptive detection are performed given the same hardware cost.

Modeling Spoof Noise by De-spoofing Diffusion and its Application in Face Anti-spoofing

Face anti-spoofing is crucial for ensuring the security and reliability of face recognition systems. Several existing face anti-spoofing methods utilize GAN-like networks to detect presentation attacks by estimating the noise pattern of a spoof image and recovering the corresponding genuine image. But GAN's limited face appearance space results in the denoised faces cannot cover the full data distribution of genuine faces, thereby undermining the generalization performance of such methods. In this work, we present a pioneering attempt to employ diffusion models to denoise a spoof image and restore the genuine image. The difference between these two images is considered as the spoof noise, which can serve as a discriminative cue for face anti-spoofing. We evaluate our proposed method on several intra-testing and inter-testing protocols, where the experimental results showcase the effectiveness of our method in achieving competitive performance in terms of both accuracy and generalization.

Automatic Implementation of Neural Networks through Reaction Networks--Part II: Error Analysis

This paired article aims to develop an automated and programmable biochemical fully connected neural network (BFCNN) with solid theoretical support. In Part I, a concrete design for BFCNN is presented, along with the validation of the effectiveness and exponential convergence of computational modules. In this article, we establish the framework for specifying the realization errors by monitoring the errors generated from approaching equilibrium points in individual modules, as well as their vertical propagation from upstream modules and horizontal accumulation from previous iterations. Ultimately, we derive the general error upper bound formula for any iteration and illustrate its exponential convergence order with respect to the phase length of the utilized chemical oscillator. The numerical experiments, based on the classification examples, reveal the tendency of total errors related to both the phase length and iteration number.

DREAM: Debugging and Repairing AutoML Pipelines

Deep Learning models have become an integrated component of modern software systems. In response to the challenge of model design, researchers proposed Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) systems, which automatically search for model architecture and hyperparameters for a given task. Like other software systems, existing AutoML systems suffer from bugs. We identify two common and severe bugs in AutoML, performance bug (i.e., searching for the desired model takes an unreasonably long time) and ineffective search bug (i.e., AutoML systems are not able to find an accurate enough model). After analyzing the workflow of AutoML, we observe that existing AutoML systems overlook potential opportunities in search space, search method, and search feedback, which results in performance and ineffective search bugs. Based on our analysis, we design and implement DREAM, an automatic debugging and repairing system for AutoML systems. It monitors the process of AutoML to collect detailed feedback and automatically repairs bugs by expanding search space and leveraging a feedback-driven search strategy. Our evaluation results show that DREAM can effectively and efficiently repair AutoML bugs.

Parameter Estimation of LAMOST Medium-resolution Stellar Spectra

This paper investigates the problem of estimating three stellar atmospheric physical parameters and thirteen elemental abundances for medium-resolution spectra from Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Typical characteristics of these spectra are their huge scale, wide range of spectral signal-to-noise ratios, and uneven distribution in parameter space. These characteristics lead to unsatisfactory results on the spectra with low temperature, high temperature or low metallicity. To this end, this paper proposes a Stellar Parameter Estimation method based on Multiple Regions (SPEMR) that effectively improves parameter estimation accuracy. On the spectra with {S/N $\geq 10$}, the precisions are 47 K, 0.08 dex, 0.03 dex respectively for the estimations of ($T_{\rm eff}$, $\log \,g$ and $\rm [Fe/H]$), 0.03 dex to 0.06 dex for elements C, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Mn and Ni, 0.07 dex to 0.13 dex for N, O, S, K and Ti, while that of Cr is 0.16 dex.For the reference of astronomical science researchers and algorithm researchers, we released a catalog for 4.19 million medium-resolution spectra from the LAMOST DR8, experimental code, trained model, training data, and test data.

Automatic Implementation of Neural Networks through Reaction Networks -- Part I: Circuit Design and Convergence Analysis

Information processing relying on biochemical interactions in the cellular environment is essential for biological organisms. The implementation of molecular computational systems holds significant interest and potential in the fields of synthetic biology and molecular computation. This two-part article aims to introduce a programmable biochemical reaction network (BCRN) system endowed with mass action kinetics that realizes the fully connected neural network (FCNN) and has the potential to act automatically in vivo. In part I, the feedforward propagation computation, the backpropagation component, and all bridging processes of FCNN are ingeniously designed as specific BCRN modules based on their dynamics. This approach addresses a design gap in the biochemical assignment module and judgment termination module and provides a novel precise and robust realization of bi-molecular reactions for the learning process. Through equilibrium approaching, we demonstrate that the designed BCRN system achieves FCNN functionality with exponential convergence to target computational results, thereby enhancing the theoretical support for such work. Finally, the performance of this construction is further evaluated on two typical logic classification problems.

rPPG-Toolbox: Deep Remote PPG Toolbox

Camera-based physiological measurement is a fast growing field of computer vision. Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) utilizes imaging devices (e.g., cameras) to measure the peripheral blood volume pulse (BVP) via photoplethysmography, and enables cardiac measurement via webcams and smartphones. However, the task is non-trivial with important pre-processing, modeling, and post-processing steps required to obtain state-of-the-art results. Replication of results and benchmarking of new models is critical for scientific progress; however, as with many other applications of deep learning, reliable codebases are not easy to find or use. We present a comprehensive toolbox, rPPG-Toolbox, that contains unsupervised and supervised rPPG models with support for public benchmark datasets, data augmentation, and systematic evaluation: \url{https://github.com/ubicomplab/rPPG-Toolbox}

Skywork: A More Open Bilingual Foundation Model

In this technical report, we present Skywork-13B, a family of large language models (LLMs) trained on a corpus of over 3.2 trillion tokens drawn from both English and Chinese texts. This bilingual foundation model is the most extensively trained and openly published LLMs of comparable size to date. We introduce a two-stage training methodology using a segmented corpus, targeting general purpose training and then domain-specific enhancement training, respectively. We show that our model not only excels on popular benchmarks, but also achieves \emph{state of the art} performance in Chinese language modeling on diverse domains. Furthermore, we propose a novel leakage detection method, demonstrating that test data contamination is a pressing issue warranting further investigation by the LLM community. To spur future research, we release Skywork-13B along with checkpoints obtained during intermediate stages of the training process. We are also releasing part of our SkyPile corpus, a collection of over 150 billion tokens of web text, which is the largest high quality open Chinese pre-training corpus to date. We hope Skywork-13B and our open corpus will serve as a valuable open-source resource to democratize access to high-quality LLMs.

A Parallel Feature-preserving Mesh Variable Offsetting Method with Dynamic Programming

Mesh offsetting plays an important role in discrete geometric processing. In this paper, we propose a parallel feature-preserving mesh offsetting framework with variable distance. Different from the traditional method based on distance and normal vector, a new calculation of offset position is proposed by using dynamic programming and quadratic programming, and the sharp feature can be preserved after offsetting. Instead of distance implicit field, a spatial coverage region represented by polyhedral for computing offsets is proposed. Our method can generate an offsetting model with smaller mesh size, and also can achieve high quality without gaps, holes, and self-intersections. Moreover, several acceleration techniques are proposed for the efficient mesh offsetting, such as the parallel computing with grid, AABB tree and rays computing. In order to show the efficiency and robustness of the proposed framework, we have tested our method on the quadmesh dataset, which is available at [https://www.quadmesh.cloud]. The source code of the proposed algorithm is available on GitHub at [https://github.com/iGame-Lab/PFPOffset].

B2Opt: Learning to Optimize Black-box Optimization with Little Budget

The core challenge of high-dimensional and expensive black-box optimization (BBO) is how to obtain better performance faster with little function evaluation cost. The essence of the problem is how to design an efficient optimization strategy tailored to the target task. This paper designs a powerful optimization framework to automatically learn the optimization strategies from the target or cheap surrogate task without human intervention. However, current methods are weak for this due to poor representation of optimization strategy. To achieve this, 1) drawing on the mechanism of genetic algorithm, we propose a deep neural network framework called B2Opt, which has a stronger representation of optimization strategies based on survival of the fittest; 2) B2Opt can utilize the cheap surrogate functions of the target task to guide the design of the efficient optimization strategies. Compared to the state-of-the-art BBO baselines, B2Opt can achieve multiple orders of magnitude performance improvement with less function evaluation cost. We validate our proposal on high-dimensional synthetic functions and two real-world applications. We also find that deep B2Opt performs better than shallow ones.
