Efficient Probabilistic Assessment of Power System Resilience Using the Polynomial Chaos Expansion Method with Enhanced Stability

Increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events motivates the assessment of power system resilience. The random nature of power system failures during these events mandates probabilistic resilience assessment, but state-of-the-art methods are computationally inefficient. In this paper, an enhanced PCE method to quantify power system resilience based on the extended AC Cascading Failure Model (AC-CFM) model is proposed. To address repeatability issues arising from PCE computation with different sample sets, we propose a novel experiment design method. Numerical studies on the IEEE 39-bus system illustrate the improved repeatability and convergence of the method. The enhanced PCE method is then used to efficiently assess the system's resilience and propose adaptation measures.

Ab initio investigation of layered TMGeTe3 alloys for phase-change applications

Chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs) are one of the most mature candidates for next-generation memory technology. Recently, CrGeTe3 (CrGT) emerged as a promising PCM due to its enhanced amorphous stability and fast crystallization for embedded memory applications. The amorphous stability of CrGT was attributed to the complex layered structure of the crystalline motifs needed to initiate crystallization. A subsequent computational screening work identified several similar compounds with good thermal stability, such as InGeTe3, CrSiTe3 and BiSiTe3. Here, we explore substitution of Cr in CrGT with other 3d metals, and predict four additional layered alloys to be dynamically stable, namely, ScGeTe3, TiGeTe3, ZnGeTe3 and MnGeTe3. Thorough ab initio simulations performed on both crystalline and amorphous models of these materials indicate the former three alloys to be potential PCMs with sizable resistance contrast. Furthermore, we find that crystalline MnGeTe3 exhibits ferromagnetic behavior, whereas the amorphous state probably forms a spin-glass phase. This makes MnGeTe3 a promising candidate for magnetic phase-change applications.

Comparative Analysis of Learning-Based Methods for Transient Stability Assessment

Transient stability and critical clearing time (CCT) are important concepts in power system protection and control. This paper explores and compares various learning-based methods for predicting CCT under uncertainties arising from renewable generation, loads, and contingencies. Specially, we introduce new definitions of transient stability (B-stablilty) and CCT from an engineering perspective. For training the models, only the initial values of system variables and contingency cases are used as features, enabling the provision of protection information based on these initial values. To enhance efficiency, a hybrid feature selection strategy combining the maximal information coefficient (MIC) and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient (SCC) is employed to reduce the feature dimension. The performance of different learning-based models is evaluated on a WSCC 9-bus system.

Hidden Convexity-Based Distributed Operation of Integrated Electricity-Gas Systems

We propose a hidden convexity-based method to address distributed optimal energy flow (OEF) problems for transmission-level integrated electricity-gas systems. First, we develop a node-wise decoupling method to de-compose an OEF problem into multiple OEF subproblems. Then, we propose a hidden convexity-based method to equivalently reformulate nonconvex OEF subproblems as semi-definite programs. This method differs from any ap-proximation and convexification methods that may incur infeasible solutions. Since all OEF subproblems are origi-nally convex or equivalently convexified, we adopt an ADMM to solve the hidden convexity-based distributed OEF problem with convergence analysis. Test results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, especially in handling a large number of agents.

Efficient Probabilistic Optimal Power Flow Assessment Using an Adaptive Stochastic Spectral Embedding Surrogate Model

This paper presents an adaptive stochastic spectral embedding (ASSE) method to solve the probabilistic AC optimal power flow (AC-OPF), a critical aspect of power system operation. The proposed method can efficiently and accurately estimate the probabilistic characteristics of AC-OPF solutions. An adaptive domain partition strategy and expansion coefficient calculation algorithm are integrated to enhance its performance. Numerical studies on a 9-bus system demonstrate that the proposed ASSE method offers accurate and fast evaluations compared to the Monte Carlo simulations. A comparison with a sparse polynomial chaos expansion method, an existing surrogate model, further demonstrates its efficacy in accurately assessing the responses with strongly local behaviors.

Sample Robust Scheduling of Electricity-Gas Systems Under Wind Power Uncertainty

This paper adopts a two-stage sample robust optimization (SRO) model to address the wind power penetrated unit commitment optimal energy flow (UC-OEF) problem for IEGSs. The two-stage SRO model can be approximately transformed into a computationally efficient form. Specifically, we employ linear decision rules to simplify the proposed UC-OEF model. Moreover, we further enhance the tractability of the simplified model by exploring its structural features and, accordingly, develop a solution method.

Modeling Load Redistribution Attacks in Integrated Electricity-Gas Systems

We investigate load redistribution (LR) attacks on integrated electricity-gas systems (IEGSs) and proposes a bilevel mixed-integer model to identify the most severe LR attack from an economic perspective. Under a mild assumption, we prove that the proposed model does not exclude any possible upper-level attack. A modified reformulation and decomposition (R&D) algorithm is developed to solve this model in a master-subproblem framework. Particularly, we design a subproblem to address infeasibility issues in the master problem. Accordingly, two types of cuts are added to the master problem for ensuring algorithm feasibility and solution optimality.

On Data-Driven Modeling and Control in Modern Power Grids Stability: Survey and Perspective

Modern power grids are fast evolving with the increasing volatile renewable generation, distributed energy resources (DERs) and time-varying operating conditions. The DERs include rooftop photovoltaic (PV), small wind turbines, energy storages, flexible loads, electric vehicles (EVs), etc. The grid control is confronted with low inertia, uncertainty and nonlinearity that challenge the operation security, efficacy and efficiency. The ongoing digitization of power grids provides opportunities to address the challenges with data-driven and control. This paper provides a comprehensive review of emerging data-driven dynamical modeling and control methods and their various applications in power grid. Future trends are also discussed based on advances in data-driven control.

A Comparative Study of Polynomial Chaos Expansion-Based Methods for Global Sensitivity Analysis in Power System Uncertainty Control

In this letter, we compare three polynomial chaos expansion (PCE)-based methods for ANCOVA (ANalysis of COVAriance) indices based global sensitivity analysis for correlated random inputs in two power system applications. Surprisingly, the PCE-based models built with independent inputs after decorrelation may not give the most accurate ANCOVA indices, though this approach seems to be the most correct one and was applied in [1] in the field of civil engineering. In contrast, the PCE model built using correlated random inputs directly yields the most accurate ANCOVA indices for global sensitivity analysis. Analysis and discussions about the errors of different PCE-based models will also be presented. These results provide important guidance for uncertainty management and control in power system operation and security assessment.

Spin glass behavior in amorphous Cr2Ge2Te6 phase-change alloy

The layered crystal structure of Cr2Ge2Te6 shows ferromagnetic ordering at the two-dimensional limit, which holds promise for spintronic applications. However, external voltage pulses can trigger amorphization of the material in nanoscale electronic devices, and it is unclear whether the loss of structural ordering leads to a change in magnetic properties. Here, we demonstrate that Cr2Ge2Te6 preserves the spin-polarized nature in the amorphous phase, but undergoes a magnetic transition to a spin glass state below 20 K. Quantum-mechanical computations reveal the microscopic origin of this transition in spin configuration: it is due to strong distortions of the Cr-Te-Cr bonds, connecting chromium-centered octahedra, and to the overall increase in disorder upon amorphization. The tunable magnetic properties of Cr2Ge2Te6 could be exploited for multifunctional, magnetic phase-change devices that switch between crystalline and amorphous states.

A Data-Driven Polynomial Chaos Expansion-Based Method for Microgrid Ramping Support Capability Assessment and Enhancement

Microgrids (MGs) are regarded as effective solutions to provide ramping support to the main grid during heavy-load periods. Nevertheless, the uncertain renewable energy sources (RES) and electric vehicles (EVs) integrated into an MG may affect the ramping support capability (RSC) of an MG. To address the challenge, this paper develops a data-driven sparse polynomial chaos expansion (DDSPCE)-based method to accurately and efficiently evaluate the hour-by-hour RSC of an MG. The DDSPCE model is further exploited to identify the most influential random inputs, based on which a scheduling method of BESS is developed to enhance the RSC of an MG. Simulation results in the modified IEEE 33-bus MG shows that the proposed method takes less than 3 minutes for evaluating and enhancing the hourly RSC.

A Novel Koopman-Inspired Method for the Secondary Control of Microgrids with Grid-Forming and Grid-Following Sources

This paper proposes an online data-driven Koopman-inspired identification and control method for microgrid secondary voltage and frequency control. Unlike typical data-driven methods, the proposed method requires no warm-up training yet with guaranteed bounded-input-bounded-output (BIBO) stability and even asymptotic stability under some mild conditions. The proposed method estimates the Koopman state space model adaptively so as to perform effective secondary voltage and frequency control that can handle microgrid nonlinearity and uncertainty. Case studies in the 4-bus and 13-bus microgrid test systems (with grid-forming and grid-following sources) demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed identification and control method subject to the change of operating conditions and large disturbances (e.g., microgrid mode transitions, generation/load variations) even with measurement noises and time delays.

An Online Data-Driven Method to Locate Forced Oscillation Sources from Power Plants Based on Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy)

Forced oscillations may jeopardize the secure operation of power systems. To mitigate forced oscillations, locating the sources is critical. In this paper, leveraging on Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy), an online purely data-driven method to locate the forced oscillation is developed. Validations in all simulated cases (in the WECC 179-bus system) and actual oscillation events (in ISO New England system) in the IEEE Task Force test cases library are carried out, which demonstrate that the proposed algorithm, requiring no model information, can accurately locate sources in most cases, even under resonance condition and when the natural modes are poorly damped. The little tuning requirement and low computational cost make the proposed method viable for online application.

An Online Data-Driven Method for Microgrid Secondary Voltage and Frequency Control with Ensemble Koopman Modeling

Low inertia, nonlinearity and a high level of uncertainty (varying topologies and operating conditions) pose challenges to microgrid (MG) systemwide operation. This paper proposes an online adaptive Koopman operator optimal control (AKOOC) method for MG secondary voltage and frequency control. Unlike typical data-driven methods that are data-hungry and lack guaranteed stability, the proposed AKOOC requires no warm-up training yet with guaranteed bounded-input-bounded-output (BIBO) stability and even asymptotical stability under some mild conditions. The proposed AKOOC is developed based on an ensemble Koopman state space modeling with full basis functions that combines both linear and nonlinear bases without the need of event detection or switching. An iterative learning method is also developed to exploit model parameters, ensuring the effectiveness and the adaptiveness of the designed control. Simulation studies in the 4-bus (with detailed inner-loop control) MG system and the 34-bus MG system showed improved modeling accuracy and control, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed method subject to various changes of operating conditions even with time delay, measurement noise, and missing measurements.

A Sparse Polynomial Chaos Expansion-Based Method for Probabilistic Transient Stability Assessment and Enhancement

This paper proposes an adaptive sparse polynomial chaos expansion(PCE)-based method to quantify the impacts of uncertainties on critical clearing time (CCT) that is an important index in transient stability analysis. The proposed method can not only give fast and accurate estimations for the probabilistic characteristics (e.g., mean, variance, probability density function) of the probabilistic CCT (PCCT), but also provides crucial information about the sensitivity of random inputs with respect to the variance of PCCT. Utilizing the sensitivity information, mitigation measures can be developed for transient stability enhancement. Numerical studies on the WSCC 9-bus system demonstrate the high accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method compared to the Monte Carlo simulation method. The provided sensitivity information and the effectiveness of mitigation measures in transient stability enhancement are also verified.

Targeted False Data Injection Attacks Against AC State Estimation Without Network Parameters

State estimation is a data processing algorithm for converting redundant meter measurements and other information into an estimate of the state of a power system. Relying heavily on meter measurements, state estimation has proven to be vulnerable to cyber attacks. In this paper, a novel targeted false data injection attack (FDIA) model against AC state estimation is proposed. Leveraging on the intrinsic load dynamics in ambient conditions and important properties of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, we, from the viewpoint of intruders, design an algorithm to extract power network parameters purely from PMU data, which are further used to construct the FDIA vector. Requiring no network parameters and relying only on limited phasor measurement unit (PMU) data, the proposed FDIA model can target specific states and launch large deviation attacks. Sufficient conditions for the proposed FDIA model are also developed. Various attack vectors and attacking regions are studied in the IEEE 39-bus system, showing that the proposed FDIA method can successfully bypass the bad data detection and launch targeted large deviation attacks with very high probabilities.

Wide-Area Damping Control for Interarea Oscillations in Power Grids Based on PMU Measurements

In this paper, a phasor measurement unit (PMU)-based wide-area damping control method is proposed to damp the interarea oscillations that threaten the modern power system stability and security. Utilizing the synchronized PMU data, the proposed almost model-free approach can achieve an effective damping for the selected modes using a minimum number of synchronous generators. Simulations are performed to show the validity of the proposed wide-area damping control scheme.
