Direct temporal mode measurement of photon pairs by stimulated emission

It is known that photon pairs generated from pulse-pumped spontaneous parametric processes can be described by independent temporal modes and form a multi-temporal mode entangled state. However, the exact form of the temporal modes is not known even though the joint spectral intensity of photon pairs can be measured by the method of stimulated emission tomography. In this paper, we describe a feedback-iteration method which, combined with the stimulated emission method, can give rise to the exact forms of the independent temporal modes for the temporally entangled photon pairs.

PC-DARTS: Partial Channel Connections for Memory-Efficient Architecture Search

Differentiable architecture search (DARTS) provided a fast solution in finding effective network architectures, but suffered from large memory and computing overheads in jointly training a super-network and searching for an optimal architecture. In this paper, we present a novel approach, namely, Partially-Connected DARTS, by sampling a small part of super-network to reduce the redundancy in exploring the network space, thereby performing a more efficient search without comprising the performance. In particular, we perform operation search in a subset of channels while bypassing the held out part in a shortcut. This strategy may suffer from an undesired inconsistency on selecting the edges of super-net caused by sampling different channels. We alleviate it using edge normalization, which adds a new set of edge-level parameters to reduce uncertainty in search. Thanks to the reduced memory cost, PC-DARTS can be trained with a larger batch size and, consequently, enjoys both faster speed and higher training stability. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Specifically, we achieve an error rate of 2.57% on CIFAR10 with merely 0.1 GPU-days for architecture search, and a state-of-the-art top-1 error rate of 24.2% on ImageNet (under the mobile setting) using 3.8 GPU-days for search. Damping-like Torque in Monolayer 1T-TaS$_2$

A damping-like spin orbit torque (SOT) is a prerequisite for ultralow power spin logic devices. Here, we report on the damping-like SOT in just one monolayer of the conducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) TaS$_2$ interfaced with a NiFe (Py) ferromagnetic layer. The charge-spin conversion efficiency is found to be 0.25$\pm$0.03 and the spin Hall conductivity (2.63 $\times$ 10$^5$ $\frac{\hbar}{2e}$ $Ω^{-1}$ m$^{-1}$) is found to be superior to values reported for other TMDs. The origin of this large damping-like SOT can be found in the interfacial properties of the TaS$_2$/Py heterostructure, and the experimental findings are complemented by the results from density functional theory calculations. The dominance of damping-like torque demonstrated in our study provides a promising path for designing next generation conducting TMD based low-powered quantum memory devices.

Direct temporal mode measurement for the characterization of temporally multiplexed high dimensional quantum entanglement in continuous variables

Field-orthogonal temporal mode analysis of optical fields is recently developed for a new framework of quantum information science. But so far, the exact profiles of the temporal modes are not known, which makes it difficult to achieve mode selection and de-multiplexing. Here, we report a novel method that measures directly the exact form of the temporal modes. This in turn enables us to make mode-orthogonal homodyne detection with mode-matched local oscillators. We apply the method to a pulse-pumped, specially engineered fiber parametric amplifier and demonstrate temporally multiplexed multi-dimensional quantum entanglement of continuous variables in telecom wavelength. The temporal mode characterization technique can be generalized to other pulse-excited systems to find their eigen modes for multiplexing in temporal domain.

Latency-Aware Differentiable Neural Architecture Search

Differentiable neural architecture search methods became popular in recent years, mainly due to their low search costs and flexibility in designing the search space. However, these methods suffer the difficulty in optimizing network, so that the searched network is often unfriendly to hardware. This paper deals with this problem by adding a differentiable latency loss term into optimization, so that the search process can tradeoff between accuracy and latency with a balancing coefficient. The core of latency prediction is to encode each network architecture and feed it into a multi-layer regressor, with the training data which can be easily collected from randomly sampling a number of architectures and evaluating them on the hardware. We evaluate our approach on NVIDIA Tesla-P100 GPUs. With 100K sampled architectures (requiring a few hours), the latency prediction module arrives at a relative error of lower than 10%. Equipped with this module, the search method can reduce the latency by 20% meanwhile preserving the accuracy. Our approach also enjoys the ability of being transplanted to a wide range of hardware platforms with very few efforts, or being used to optimizing other non-differentiable factors such as power consumption.

Triad State Space Construction for Chaotic Signal Classification with Deep Learning

Inspired by the well-known permutation entropy (PE), an effective image encoding scheme for chaotic time series, Triad State Space Construction (TSSC), is proposed. The TSSC image can recognize higher-order temporal patterns and identify new forbidden regions in time series motifs beyond the Bandt-Pompe probabilities. The Convolutional Neural Network (ConvNet) is widely used in image classification. The ConvNet classifier based on TSSC images (TSSC-ConvNet) are highly accurate and very robust in the chaotic signal classification.

Circumventing Outliers of AutoAugment with Knowledge Distillation

AutoAugment has been a powerful algorithm that improves the accuracy of many vision tasks, yet it is sensitive to the operator space as well as hyper-parameters, and an improper setting may degenerate network optimization. This paper delves deep into the working mechanism, and reveals that AutoAugment may remove part of discriminative information from the training image and so insisting on the ground-truth label is no longer the best option. To relieve the inaccuracy of supervision, we make use of knowledge distillation that refers to the output of a teacher model to guide network training. Experiments are performed in standard image classification benchmarks, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in suppressing noise of data augmentation and stabilizing training. Upon the cooperation of knowledge distillation and AutoAugment, we claim the new state-of-the-art on ImageNet classification with a top-1 accuracy of 85.8%.

Homogenization of symmetric stable-like processes in stationary ergodic medium

This paper studies homogenization of symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms with $α$-stable-like jumping kernels in one-parameter stationary ergodic environment. Under suitable conditions, we establish homogenization results and identify the limiting effective Dirichlet forms explicitly. The coefficients of the jumping kernels of Dirichlet forms and symmetrizing measures are allowed to be degenerate and unbounded; and the coefficients in the effective Dirichlet forms can be degenerate.

Search for a generic heavy Higgs at the LHC

A generic heavy Higgs has both dim-4 and effective dim-6 interactions with the Standard Model (SM) particles. The former has been the focus of LHC searches in all major Higgs production channels, just as the SM one, but with negative results so far. If the heavy Higgs is connected with Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics at a few TeV scale, its dim-6 operators will play a very important role - they significantly enhance the Higgs momentum, and reduce the SM background in a special phase space corner to a level such that a heavy Higgs emerges, which is not possible with dim-4 operators only. We focus on the associated VH production channel, where the effect of dim-6 operators is the largest and the SM background is the lowest. Main search regions for this type of signal are identified, and substructure variables of boosted jets are employed to enhance the signal from backgrounds. The parameter space of these operators are scanned over, and expected exclusion regions with 300 fb$^{-1}$ and 3 ab$^{-1}$ LHC data are shown, if no BSM is present. The strategy given in this paper will shed light on a heavy Higgs which may be otherwise hiding in the present and future LHC data.

Detecting and Studying High-Energy Collider Neutrinos with FASER at the LHC

Neutrinos are copiously produced at particle colliders, but no collider neutrino has ever been detected. Colliders, and particularly hadron colliders, produce both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos of all flavors at very high energies, and they are therefore highly complementary to those from other sources. FASER, the recently approved Forward Search Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, is ideally located to provide the first detection and study of collider neutrinos. We investigate the prospects for neutrino studies of a proposed component of FASER, FASER$ν$, a 25cm x 25cm x 1.35m emulsion detector to be placed directly in front of the FASER spectrometer in tunnel TI12. FASER$ν$ consists of 1000 layers of emulsion films interleaved with 1-mm-thick tungsten plates, with a total tungsten target mass of 1.2 tons. We estimate the neutrino fluxes and interaction rates at FASER$ν$, describe the FASER$ν$ detector, and analyze the characteristics of the signals and primary backgrounds. For an integrated luminosity of 150 fb$^{-1}$ to be collected during Run 3 of the 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider from 2021-23, and assuming standard model cross sections, approximately 1300 electron neutrinos, 20,000 muon neutrinos, and 20 tau neutrinos will interact in FASER$ν$, with mean energies of 600 GeV to 1 TeV, depending on the flavor. With such rates and energies, FASER will measure neutrino cross sections at energies where they are currently unconstrained, will bound models of forward particle production, and could open a new window on physics beyond the standard model.

Sample Complexity of Sample Average Approximation for Conditional Stochastic Optimization

In this paper, we study a class of stochastic optimization problems, referred to as the \emph{Conditional Stochastic Optimization} (CSO), in the form of $\min_{x \in \mathcal{X}} \EE_ξf_ξ\Big({\EE_{η|ξ}[g_η(x,ξ)]}\Big)$, which finds a wide spectrum of applications including portfolio selection, reinforcement learning, robust learning, causal inference and so on. Assuming availability of samples from the distribution $\PP(ξ)$ and samples from the conditional distribution $\PP(η|ξ)$, we establish the sample complexity of the sample average approximation (SAA) for CSO, under a variety of structural assumptions, such as Lipschitz continuity, smoothness, and error bound conditions. We show that the total sample complexity improves from $\cO(d/\eps^4)$ to $\cO(d/\eps^3)$ when assuming smoothness of the outer function, and further to $\cO(1/\eps^2)$ when the empirical function satisfies the quadratic growth condition. We also establish the sample complexity of a modified SAA, when $ξ$ and $η$ are independent. Several numerical experiments further support our theoretical findings. Motif Difference Field: A Simple and Effective Image Representation of Time Series for Classification

Time series motifs play an important role in the time series analysis. The motif-based time series clustering is used for the discovery of higher-order patterns or structures in time series data. Inspired by the convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier based on the image representations of time series, motif difference field (MDF) is proposed. Compared to other image representations of time series, MDF is simple and easy to construct. With the Fully Convolution Network (FCN) as the classifier, MDF demonstrates the superior performance on the UCR time series dataset in benchmark with other time series classification methods. It is interesting to find that the triadic time series motifs give the best result in the test. Due to the motif clustering reflected in MDF, the significant motifs are detected with the help of the Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM). The areas in MDF with high weight in Grad-CAM have a high contribution from the significant motifs with the desired ordinal patterns associated with the signature patterns in time series. However, the signature patterns cannot be identified with the neural network classifiers directly based on the time series.

Technical Proposal: FASERnu

FASERnu is a proposed small and inexpensive emulsion detector designed to detect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their properties. FASERnu will be located directly in front of FASER, 480 m from the ATLAS interaction point along the beam collision axis in the unused service tunnel TI12. From 2021-23 during Run 3 of the 14 TeV LHC, roughly 1,300 electron neutrinos, 20,000 muon neutrinos, and 20 tau neutrinos will interact in FASERnu with TeV-scale energies. With the ability to observe these interactions, reconstruct their energies, and distinguish flavors, FASERnu will probe the production, propagation, and interactions of neutrinos at the highest human-made energies ever recorded. The FASERnu detector will be composed of 1000 emulsion layers interleaved with tungsten plates. The total volume of the emulsion and tungsten is 25cm x 25cm x 1.35m, and the tungsten target mass is 1.2 tonnes. From 2021-23, 7 sets of emulsion layers will be installed, with replacement roughly every 20-50 1/fb in planned Technical Stops. In this document, we summarize FASERnu's physics goals and discuss the estimates of neutrino flux and interaction rates. We then describe the FASERnu detector in detail, including plans for assembly, transport, installation, and emulsion replacement, and procedures for emulsion readout and analyzing the data. We close with cost estimates for the detector components and infrastructure work and a timeline for the experiment.

Progressive DARTS: Bridging the Optimization Gap for NAS in the Wild

With the rapid development of neural architecture search (NAS), researchers found powerful network architectures for a wide range of vision tasks. However, it remains unclear if the searched architecture can transfer across different types of tasks as manually designed ones did. This paper puts forward this problem, referred to as NAS in the wild, which explores the possibility of finding the optimal architecture in a proxy dataset and then deploying it to mostly unseen scenarios. We instantiate this setting using a currently popular algorithm named differentiable architecture search (DARTS), which often suffers unsatisfying performance while being transferred across different tasks. We argue that the accuracy drop originates from the formulation that uses a super-network for search but a sub-network for re-training. The different properties of these stages have resulted in a significant optimization gap, and consequently, the architectural parameters "over-fit" the super-network. To alleviate the gap, we present a progressive method that gradually increases the network depth during the search stage, which leads to the Progressive DARTS (P-DARTS) algorithm. With a reduced search cost (7 hours on a single GPU), P-DARTS achieves improved performance on both the proxy dataset (CIFAR10) and a few target problems (ImageNet classification, COCO detection and three ReID benchmarks). Non-Hermitian Linear Response Theory

Linear response theory lies at the heart of quantum many-body physics because it builds up connections between the dynamical response to an external probe and correlation functions at equilibrium. Here we consider the dynamical response of a Hermitian system to a non-Hermitian probe, and we develop a non-Hermitian linear response theory that can also relate this dynamical response to equilibrium properties. As an application of our theory, we consider the real-time dynamics of momentum distribution induced by one-body and two-body dissipations. We find that, for many cases, the dynamics of momentum occupation and the width of momentum distribution obey the same universal function, governed by the single-particle spectral function. We also find that, for critical state with no well-defined quasi-particles, the dynamics are slower than normal state and our theory provides a model independent way to extract the critical exponent. We apply our results to analyze recent experiment on the Bose-Hubbard model and find surprising good agreement between theory and experiment. We also propose to further verify our theory by carrying out a similar experiment on a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid.

A More Refined Mobile Edge Cache Replacement Scheme for Adaptive Video Streaming with Mutual Cooperation in Multi-MEC Servers

In this paper, we propose a more refined video segment based Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) enhanced cache update strategy, which takes into account the client's playback status and transmission state, MEC cache capacity and the popularity of each segment, to improve the quality of experience (QoE) of clients and the use ratio of MEC cache. In each cache update period, the segments which cannot bring significant QoE improvement will be deleted and meanwhile more suitable representations of the segments will be cahed instead. First, we divide the MEC cache space into three parts based on segment popularity and segment importance level. In addition, the size of different cache parts can be transformed to each other to further exploit the MEC cache space. For different parts, the corresponding deleted strategy and caching strategy are formulated, where the deleted strategy combines the requested times of segment and transmission capability of clients, and the caching strategy utilizes the playback state of clients to calculate the caching priority. Furthermore, we formulate the cache update problem to maximize the utility function of clients subject to the constraint of MEC cache size and transmission capacity. The brand and branch method is emplyed to obatain the optimal solution. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can improve system throughput and hit ratio of video segment, and at the same time decrease playback frozen time and system backhaul traffic compared with other existing algorithms.

Anion charge-lattice volume dependent Li ion migration in compounds with the face-centered cubic anion frameworks

The proper design principles are essential for the efficient development of superionic conductors. However, the existing design principles are mainly proposed from the perspective of crystal structures. In this work, the face-centered cubic (fcc) anion frameworks were creatively constructed to study the effects of anion charge and lattice volume on the stability of lithium ion occupation and lithium ion migration. Both the large negative anion charges and large lattice volumes would increase the relative stabilities of lithium-anion tetrahedron, and make Li ions prefer to occupy the tetrahedral sites. For a tetrahedral Li ion migration to its adjacent tetrahedral site through an octahedral transition state, the smaller the negative anion charge is, the lower the lithium ion migration barrier will be. While for an octahedral Li ion migration to its adjacent octahedral site through a tetrahedral transition state, the larger negative anion charge is, the lower the lithium ion migration barrier will be. New design principles for developing superionic conductors with the fcc anion framework were proposed. Low Li ion migration barriers would be achieved by adjusting the non-lithium elements within the same crystal structure framework to obtain the desired electronegativity difference between the anion element and non-lithium cation element.

Data Augmentation Revisited: Rethinking the Distribution Gap between Clean and Augmented Data

Data augmentation has been widely applied as an effective methodology to improve generalization in particular when training deep neural networks. Recently, researchers proposed a few intensive data augmentation techniques, which indeed improved accuracy, yet we notice that these methods augment data have also caused a considerable gap between clean and augmented data. In this paper, we revisit this problem from an analytical perspective, for which we estimate the upper-bound of expected risk using two terms, namely, empirical risk and generalization error, respectively. We develop an understanding of data augmentation as regularization, which highlights the major features. As a result, data augmentation significantly reduces the generalization error, but meanwhile leads to a slightly higher empirical risk. On the assumption that data augmentation helps models converge to a better region, the model can benefit from a lower empirical risk achieved by a simple method, i.e., using less-augmented data to refine the model trained on fully-augmented data. Our approach achieves consistent accuracy gain on a few standard image classification benchmarks, and the gain transfers to object detection.
