Omniscient Video Super-Resolution

Most recent video super-resolution (SR) methods either adopt an iterative manner to deal with low-resolution (LR) frames from a temporally sliding window, or leverage the previously estimated SR output to help reconstruct the current frame recurrently. A few studies try to combine these two structures to form a hybrid framework but have failed to give full play to it. In this paper, we propose an omniscient framework to not only utilize the preceding SR output, but also leverage the SR outputs from the present and future. The omniscient framework is more generic because the iterative, recurrent and hybrid frameworks can be regarded as its special cases. The proposed omniscient framework enables a generator to behave better than its counterparts under other frameworks. Abundant experiments on public datasets show that our method is superior to the state-of-the-art methods in objective metrics, subjective visual effects and complexity. Our code will be made public.

When Face Recognition Meets Occlusion: A New Benchmark

The existing face recognition datasets usually lack occlusion samples, which hinders the development of face recognition. Especially during the COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic, wearing a mask has become an effective means of preventing the virus spread. Traditional CNN-based face recognition models trained on existing datasets are almost ineffective for heavy occlusion. To this end, we pioneer a simulated occlusion face recognition dataset. In particular, we first collect a variety of glasses and masks as occlusion, and randomly combine the occlusion attributes (occlusion objects, textures, and colors) to achieve a large number of more realistic occlusion types. We then cover them in the proper position of the face image with the normal occlusion habit. Furthermore, we reasonably combine original normal face images and occluded face images to form our final dataset, termed as Webface-OCC. It covers 804,704 face images of 10,575 subjects, with diverse occlusion types to ensure its diversity and stability. Extensive experiments on public datasets show that the ArcFace retrained by our dataset significantly outperforms the state-of-the-arts. Webface-OCC is available at https://github.com/Baojin-Huang/Webface-OCC.

Cross-domain Joint Dictionary Learning for ECG Inference from PPG

The inverse problem of inferring electrocardiogram (ECG) from photoplethysmogram (PPG) is an emerging research direction that combines the easy measurability of PPG and the rich clinical knowledge of ECG for long-term continuous cardiac monitoring. The prior art for reconstruction using a universal basis has limited fidelity for uncommon ECG waveform shapes due to the lack of rich representative power. In this paper, we design two dictionary learning frameworks, the cross-domain joint dictionary learning (XDJDL) and the label-consistent XDJDL (LC-XDJDL), to further improve the ECG inference quality and enrich the PPG-based diagnosis knowledge. Building on the K-SVD technique, our proposed joint dictionary learning frameworks aim to maximize the expressive power by optimizing simultaneously a pair of signal dictionaries for PPG and ECG with the transforms to relate their sparse codes and disease information. The proposed models are evaluated with 34,000+ ECG/PPG cycle pairs containing a variety of ECG morphologies and cardiovascular diseases. We demonstrate both visually and quantitatively that our proposed frameworks can achieve better inference performance than previous methods, suggesting an encouraging potential for ECG screening using PPG based on the proactive learned PPG-ECG relationship.

Weakly-supervised Salient Instance Detection

Existing salient instance detection (SID) methods typically learn from pixel-level annotated datasets. In this paper, we present the first weakly-supervised approach to the SID problem. Although weak supervision has been considered in general saliency detection, it is mainly based on using class labels for object localization. However, it is non-trivial to use only class labels to learn instance-aware saliency information, as salient instances with high semantic affinities may not be easily separated by the labels. We note that subitizing information provides an instant judgement on the number of salient items, which naturally relates to detecting salient instances and may help separate instances of the same class while grouping different parts of the same instance. Inspired by this insight, we propose to use class and subitizing labels as weak supervision for the SID problem. We propose a novel weakly-supervised network with three branches: a Saliency Detection Branch leveraging class consistency information to locate candidate objects; a Boundary Detection Branch exploiting class discrepancy information to delineate object boundaries; and a Centroid Detection Branch using subitizing information to detect salient instance centroids. This complementary information is further fused to produce salient instance maps. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that the proposed method plays favorably against carefully designed baseline methods adapted from related tasks.

Spectral-change enhancement with prior SNR for the hearing impaired

A previous signal processing algorithm that aimed to enhance spectral changes (SCE) over time showed benefit for hearing-impaired (HI) listeners to recognize speech in background noise. In this work, the previous SCE was manipulated to perform on target-dominant segments, rather than treating all frames equally. Instantaneous signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) were calculated to determine whether the segments should be processed. Initially, the ideal SNR calculated by the knowledge of premixed signals was introduced to the previous SCE algorithm (SCE-iSNR). Speech intelligibility (SI) and clarity preference were measured for 12 HI listeners in steady speech-spectrum noise (SSN) and six-talk speech (STS) maskers, respectively. The results showed the SCE-iSNR algorithm improved SI significantly for both maskers at high signal-to-masker ratios (SMRs) and for STS masker at low SMRs, while processing effect on speech quality was small. Secondly, the estimated SNR obtained from real mixtures was used, resulting in another SCE-eSNR. SI and subjective rating on naturalness and speech quality were tested for 7 HI subjects. The SCE-eSNR algorithm showed improved SI for SSN masker at high SMRs and for STS masker at low SMRs, as well as better naturalness and speech quality for STS masker. The limitations of applying the algorithms are discussed.

ECG Reconstruction via PPG: A Pilot Study

In this paper, the relation between electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals is studied, and the waveform of ECG is inferred via the PPG signals. In order to address this inverse problem, a transform is proposed to map the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients of each PPG cycle to those of the corresponding ECG cycle. The resulting DCT coefficients of the ECG cycle are inversely transformed to obtain the reconstructed ECG waveform. The proposed method is evaluated on a benchmark dataset of subjects with a variety of combinations of age and weight. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a high accuracy at 0.98 in averaged correlation.

ERNIE: Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration

We present a novel language representation model enhanced by knowledge called ERNIE (Enhanced Representation through kNowledge IntEgration). Inspired by the masking strategy of BERT, ERNIE is designed to learn language representation enhanced by knowledge masking strategies, which includes entity-level masking and phrase-level masking. Entity-level strategy masks entities which are usually composed of multiple words.Phrase-level strategy masks the whole phrase which is composed of several words standing together as a conceptual unit.Experimental results show that ERNIE outperforms other baseline methods, achieving new state-of-the-art results on five Chinese natural language processing tasks including natural language inference, semantic similarity, named entity recognition, sentiment analysis and question answering. We also demonstrate that ERNIE has more powerful knowledge inference capacity on a cloze test.

An adaptive software defined radio design based on a standard space telecommunication radio system API

Software defined radio (SDR) has become a popular tool for the implementation and testing for communications performance. The advantage of the SDR approach includes: a re-configurable design, adaptive response to changing conditions, efficient development, and highly versatile implementation. In order to understand the benefits of SDR, the space telecommunication radio system (STRS) was proposed by NASA Glenn research center (GRC) along with the standard application program interface (API) structure. Each component of the system uses a well-defined API to communicate with other components. The benefit of standard API is to relax the platform limitation of each component for addition options. For example, the waveform generating process can support a field programmable gate array (FPGA), personal computer (PC), or an embedded system. As long as the API defines the requirements, the generated waveform selection will work with the complete system. In this paper, we demonstrate the design and development of adaptive SDR following the STRS and standard API protocol. We introduce step by step the SDR testbed system including the controlling graphic user interface (GUI), database, GNU radio hardware control, and universal software radio peripheral (USRP) tranceiving front end. In addition, a performance evaluation in shown on the effectiveness of the SDR approach for space telecommunication.

Topological Phase Transition in Layered XIn$_2$P$_2$ (X = Ca, Sr)

Based on fully relativistic first-principles calculations, we studied the topological properties of layered XIn$_2$P$_2$ (X = Ca, Sr). Band inversion can be induced by strain without SOC, forming one nodal ring in the k$_z$ = 0 plane, which is protected by the coexistence of time-reversal and mirror-reflection symmetry. Including SOC, a substantial band gap is opened along the nodal line and the line-node semimetal would evolve into a topological insulator. These results reveal a category of materials showing quantum phase transition from trivial semiconductor and topologically nontrivial insulator by the tuneable elastic strain engineering. Our investigations provide a new perspective about the formation of topological line-node semimetal under stain.

Discovering Underlying Plans Based on Distributed Representations of Actions

Plan recognition aims to discover target plans (i.e., sequences of actions) behind observed actions, with history plan libraries or domain models in hand. Previous approaches either discover plans by maximally "matching" observed actions to plan libraries, assuming target plans are from plan libraries, or infer plans by executing domain models to best explain the observed actions, assuming complete domain models are available. In real world applications, however, target plans are often not from plan libraries and complete domain models are often not available, since building complete sets of plans and complete domain models are often difficult or expensive. In this paper we view plan libraries as corpora and learn vector representations of actions using the corpora; we then discover target plans based on the vector representations. Our approach is capable of discovering underlying plans that are not from plan libraries, without requiring domain models provided. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by comparing its performance to traditional plan recognition approaches in three planning domains.
