Expert Uncertainty and Severity Aware Chest X-Ray Classification by Multi-Relationship Graph Learning

Patients undergoing chest X-rays (CXR) often endure multiple lung diseases. When evaluating a patient's condition, due to the complex pathologies, subtle texture changes of different lung lesions in images, and patient condition differences, radiologists may make uncertain even when they have experienced long-term clinical training and professional guidance, which makes much noise in extracting disease labels based on CXR reports. In this paper, we re-extract disease labels from CXR reports to make them more realistic by considering disease severity and uncertainty in classification. Our contributions are as follows: 1. We re-extracted the disease labels with severity and uncertainty by a rule-based approach with keywords discussed with clinical experts. 2. To further improve the explainability of chest X-ray diagnosis, we designed a multi-relationship graph learning method with an expert uncertainty-aware loss function. 3. Our multi-relationship graph learning method can also interpret the disease classification results. Our experimental results show that models considering disease severity and uncertainty outperform previous state-of-the-art methods.

Systematic Design and Evaluation of Social Determinants of Health Ontology (SDoHO)

Social determinants of health (SDoH) have a significant impact on health outcomes and well-being. Addressing SDoH is the key to reducing healthcare inequalities and transforming a "sick care" system into a "health promoting" system. To address the SDOH terminology gap and better embed relevant elements in advanced biomedical informatics, we propose an SDoH ontology (SDoHO), which represents fundamental SDoH factors and their relationships in a standardized and measurable way. The ontology formally models classes, relationships, and constraints based on multiple SDoH-related resources. Expert review and coverage evaluation, using clinical notes data and a national survey, showed satisfactory results. SDoHO could potentially play an essential role in providing a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the associations between SDoH and health outcomes and providing a path toward health equity across populations.

MedBLIP: Bootstrapping Language-Image Pre-training from 3D Medical Images and Texts

Vision-language pre-training (VLP) models have been demonstrated to be effective in many computer vision applications. In this paper, we consider developing a VLP model in the medical domain for making computer-aided diagnoses (CAD) based on image scans and text descriptions in electronic health records, as done in practice. To achieve our goal, we present a lightweight CAD system MedBLIP, a new paradigm for bootstrapping VLP from off-the-shelf frozen pre-trained image encoders and frozen large language models. We design a MedQFormer module to bridge the gap between 3D medical images and 2D pre-trained image encoders and language models as well. To evaluate the effectiveness of our MedBLIP, we collect more than 30,000 image volumes from five public Alzheimer's disease (AD) datasets, i.e., ADNI, NACC, OASIS, AIBL, and MIRIAD. On this largest AD dataset we know, our model achieves the SOTA performance on the zero-shot classification of healthy, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD subjects, and shows its capability of making medical visual question answering (VQA). The code and pre-trained models is available online: https://github.com/Qybc/MedBLIP.

Interpretable Medical Image Visual Question Answering via Multi-Modal Relationship Graph Learning

Medical visual question answering (VQA) aims to answer clinically relevant questions regarding input medical images. This technique has the potential to improve the efficiency of medical professionals while relieving the burden on the public health system, particularly in resource-poor countries. Existing medical VQA methods tend to encode medical images and learn the correspondence between visual features and questions without exploiting the spatial, semantic, or medical knowledge behind them. This is partially because of the small size of the current medical VQA dataset, which often includes simple questions. Therefore, we first collected a comprehensive and large-scale medical VQA dataset, focusing on chest X-ray images. The questions involved detailed relationships, such as disease names, locations, levels, and types in our dataset. Based on this dataset, we also propose a novel baseline method by constructing three different relationship graphs: spatial relationship, semantic relationship, and implicit relationship graphs on the image regions, questions, and semantic labels. The answer and graph reasoning paths are learned for different questions.

Mining On Alzheimer's Diseases Related Knowledge Graph to Identity Potential AD-related Semantic Triples for Drug Repurposing

To date, there are no effective treatments for most neurodegenerative diseases. Knowledge graphs can provide comprehensive and semantic representation for heterogeneous data, and have been successfully leveraged in many biomedical applications including drug repurposing. Our objective is to construct a knowledge graph from literature to study relations between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and chemicals, drugs and dietary supplements in order to identify opportunities to prevent or delay neurodegenerative progression. We collected biomedical annotations and extracted their relations using SemRep via SemMedDB. We used both a BERT-based classifier and rule-based methods during data preprocessing to exclude noise while preserving most AD-related semantic triples. The 1,672,110 filtered triples were used to train with knowledge graph completion algorithms (i.e., TransE, DistMult, and ComplEx) to predict candidates that might be helpful for AD treatment or prevention. Among three knowledge graph completion models, TransE outperformed the other two (MR = 13.45, Hits@1 = 0.306). We leveraged the time-slicing technique to further evaluate the prediction results. We found supporting evidence for most highly ranked candidates predicted by our model which indicates that our approach can inform reliable new knowledge. This paper shows that our graph mining model can predict reliable new relationships between AD and other entities (i.e., dietary supplements, chemicals, and drugs). The knowledge graph constructed can facilitate data-driven knowledge discoveries and the generation of novel hypotheses.

Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Surveillance Scheme

This letter attempts to design a surveillance scheme by adopting an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Different from the conventional passive RIS, the active RIS could not only adjust the phase shift but also amplify the amplitude of the reflected signal. With such reflecting, the reflected signal of active RIS could jointly adjust the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of the suspicious receiver and the legitimate monitor, hence the proactive eavesdropping at the physical layer could be effectively realized. We formulate the optimization problem with the target of maximizing the eavesdropping rate to obtain the optimal reflecting coefficient matrix of the active RIS. The formulated optimization problem is nonconvex fractional programming and challenging to deal with. We then solve the problem by approximating it as a series of convex constraints. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our designed surveillance scheme and show that the proposed active RIS aided surveillance scheme has good performance in terms of eavesdropping rate compared with the scheme with passive RIS.

RAPO: An Adaptive Ranking Paradigm for Bilingual Lexicon Induction

Bilingual lexicon induction induces the word translations by aligning independently trained word embeddings in two languages. Existing approaches generally focus on minimizing the distances between words in the aligned pairs, while suffering from low discriminative capability to distinguish the relative orders between positive and negative candidates. In addition, the mapping function is globally shared by all words, whose performance might be hindered by the deviations in the distributions of different languages. In this work, we propose a novel ranking-oriented induction model RAPO to learn personalized mapping function for each word. RAPO is capable of enjoying the merits from the unique characteristics of a single word and the cross-language isomorphism simultaneously. Extensive experimental results on public datasets including both rich-resource and low-resource languages demonstrate the superiority of our proposal. Our code is publicly available in \url{https://github.com/Jlfj345wf/RAPO}.

Secure Transmission Design for Virtual Antenna Array-aided Device-to-device Multicast Communications

This paper investigates the physical-layer security in a Virtual Antenna Array (VAA)-aided Device- to-Device Multicast (D2DM) communication system, where the User Equipments (UEs) who cache the common content will form a VAA system and cooperatively multicast the content to UEs who desire it. Specifically, with the target of securing the VAA-aided D2DM communication under the threat of multiple eavesdroppers, we propose a secure beamforming scheme by jointly considering the formed VAA and the Base Station (BS). For obtaining the optimal beamforing vectors, a nonsmooth and nonconvex Weight Sum Rate Maximization Problem (WRMP) is formulated and solved using Successive Convex Approximation (SCA) approach. Furthermore, we consider the worst case that eavesdroppers cooperatively form a eavesdrop VAA to enhance the overhearing capacity. In this case, we modify the securing beamforming scheme, formulate the corresponding WRMP and solve it using a two-level optimization. Simulation results validate the improvements of the VAA-aided D2DM scheme in terms of communication security compared with conventional D2DM schemes.

Memory Efficient Temporal & Visual Graph Model for Unsupervised Video Domain Adaptation

Existing video domain adaption (DA) methods need to store all temporal combinations of video frames or pair the source and target videos, which are memory cost expensive and can't scale up to long videos. To address these limitations, we propose a memory-efficient graph-based video DA approach as follows. At first our method models each source or target video by a graph: nodes represent video frames and edges represent the temporal or visual similarity relationship between frames. We use a graph attention network to learn the weight of individual frames and simultaneously align the source and target video into a domain-invariant graph feature space. Instead of storing a large number of sub-videos, our method only constructs one graph with a graph attention mechanism for one video, reducing the memory cost substantially. The extensive experiments show that, compared with the state-of-art methods, we achieved superior performance while reducing the memory cost significantly.

Knowledge Graph-based Neurodegenerative Diseases and Diet Relationship Discovery

To date, there are no effective treatments for most neurodegenerative diseases. However, certain foods may be associated with these diseases and bring an opportunity to prevent or delay neurodegenerative progression. Our objective is to construct a knowledge graph for neurodegenerative diseases using literature mining to study their relations with diet. We collected biomedical annotations (Disease, Chemical, Gene, Species, SNP&Mutation) in the abstracts from 4,300 publications relevant to both neurodegenerative diseases and diet using PubTator, an NIH-supported tool that can extract biomedical concepts from literature. A knowledge graph was created from these annotations. Graph embeddings were then trained with the node2vec algorithm to support potential concept clustering and similar concept identification. We found several food-related species and chemicals that might come from diet and have an impact on neurodegenerative diseases.

Physics-Guided Deep Neural Networks for Power Flow Analysis

Solving power flow (PF) equations is the basis of power flow analysis, which is important in determining the best operation of existing systems, performing security analysis, etc. However, PF equations can be out-of-date or even unavailable due to system dynamics and uncertainties, making traditional numerical approaches infeasible. To address these concerns, researchers have proposed data-driven approaches to solve the PF problem by learning the mapping rules from historical system operation data. Nevertheless, prior data-driven approaches suffer from poor performance and generalizability, due to overly simplified assumptions of the PF problem or ignorance of physical laws governing power systems. In this paper, we propose a physics-guided neural network to solve the PF problem, with an auxiliary task to rebuild the PF model. By encoding different granularity of Kirchhoff's laws and system topology into the rebuilt PF model, our neural-network based PF solver is regularized by the auxiliary task and constrained by the physical laws. The simulation results show that our physics-guided neural network methods achieve better performance and generalizability compared to existing unconstrained data-driven approaches. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the weight matrices of our physics-guided neural networks embody power system physics by showing their similarities with the bus admittance matrices.

Concept of SUb-atmospheric Radio-frequency Engine (SURE) for near space environment

A concept of SUb-atmospheric Radio-frequency Engine (SURE) designed for near space environment is reported. The antenna wrapping quartz tube consists of two solenoid coils with variable separation distance, and is driven by radio-frequency power supply (13.56~MHz-1~kW). The discharge involves inductive coupling under each solenoid coil and capacitive coupling between them. This novel scheme can ionize the filling air efficiently for the entire pressure range of 32\sim 5332 Pa in near space. The formed plasma density and temperature are up to 2.23\times 10^{18}~m^{-3} and 2.79 eV, respectively. The influences of separation distance, input power, filling pressure and the number of solenoid turns on discharge are presented in detail. This air-breathing electric propulsion system has no plasma-facing electrode and does not require external magnetic field, and is thereby durable and structurally compact and light.

The role of second-order radial density gradient for helicon power absorption

To reveal the mysterious and still controversial mechanism of high ionization efficiency during helicon discharges, this work focuses particularly on the role of second-order derivative in radial density profile, both analytical and numerically. It is found that: (i) the radially localized potential well that plays a critical role in resonance power absorption from antenna to plasma is localized where the second-order derivative vanishes, (ii) the power absorption increases for positive second-order derivative, decreases for negative second-order derivative, and maximizes where second-order derivative becomes zero, (iii) the power absorption decreases near plasma core and increases near plasma edge when the radial location of vanishing second-order derivative moves outwards, which is also a process of Trivelpiece-Gould mode overwhelming helicon mode. These findings can be very interesting for helicon plasma applications that require certain power distribution or heat flux configuration, e. g. material processing, which can be controlled by adjusting the profile and zero-crossing location of second-order radial density gradient.

Coupling of RF Antennas to Large Volume Helicon Plasma

Large volume helicon plasma sources are of particular interest for large scale semiconductor processing, high power plasma propulsion and recently plasma-material interaction under fusion conditions. This work is devoted to studying the coupling of four typical RF antennas to helicon plasma with infinite length and diameter of $0.5$~m, and exploring its frequency dependence in the range of $13.56-70$~MHz for coupling optimization. It is found that loop antenna is more efficient than half helix, Boswell and Nagoya III antennas for power absorption; radially parabolic density profile overwhelms Gaussian density profile in terms of antenna coupling for low-density plasma, but the superiority reverses for high-density plasma. Increasing the driving frequency results in power absorption more near plasma edge, but the overall power absorption increases with frequency. Perpendicular stream plots of wave magnetic field, wave electric field and perturbed current are also presented. This work can serve as an important reference for the experimental design of large volume helicon plasma source with high RF power.

Plasma instability of magnetically enhanced vacuum arc thruster

A two-fluid flowing plasma model is applied to describe the plasma rotation and resulted instability evolution in magnetically enhanced vacuum arc thruster (MEVAT). Typical experimental parameters are employed, including plasma density, equilibrium magnetic field, ion and electron temperatures, cathode materials, axial streaming velocity, and azimuthal rotation frequency. It is found that the growth rate of plasma instability increases with growing rotation frequency and field strength, and with descending electron temperature and atomic weight, for which the underlying physics are explained. The radial structure of density fluctuation is compared with that of equilibrium density gradient, and the radial locations of their peak magnitudes are very close, showing an evidence of resistive drift mode driven by density gradient. Temporal evolution of perturbed mass flow in the cross section of plasma column is also presented, which behaves in form of clockwise rotation (direction of electron diamagnetic drift) at edge and anti-clockwise rotation (direction of ion diamagnetic drift) in the core, separated by a mode transition layer from $n=0$ to $n=1$. This work, to our best knowledge, is the first treatment of plasma instability caused by rotation and axial flow in MEVAT, and is also of great practical interest for other electric thrusters where rotating plasma is concerned for long-time stable operation and propulsion efficiency optimization.

An Efficient Ionization Method for Pressure Up To Thousands of Pascals

A novel radio-frequency antenna consisting of isolated solenoids is reported to generate plasma for pressure up to thousands of pascals. The underlying mechanism involves capacitive coupling, inductive coupling and axial confinement from magnetic mirrors. It can ionize the air reliably with pressure up to $2500$~Pa for the $1$~kW-$13.56$~MHz power supply employed, and maintain the discharge steadily from tens of minutes to hours. This ionization method is particularly useful for plasma propulsion in near space and other low-temperature plasma applications where sub-atmospheric pressure is required.

Artificial-Noise-Aided Secure Channel with a Full-duplex Source

This paper consider a new secure communication scene where a full-duplex transmitter (Alan) need to transmit confidential information to a half-duplex receiver (Bob), with a silent eavesdropper (Eve) that tries to eavesdrop the confidential information. For realizing secure communication between Alan and Bob, a novel two phases communication scheme is proposed: in Phase 1, Alan and Bob send artificial noises (AN) simultaneously, while in Phase 2, Alan superimposes the AN received in Phase 1 with its confidential signal and sends the mixed signalto Bob. Since the mixed AN could degrade the SINR (Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio) of Eve, but does not affect the SINR of Bob, a secrecy capacity can be achieved. We also derive the conditions that the secrecy capacity of the proposed scheme exists, and analyze the secrecy outage probability under Rayleigh fading channel. Numerical results show that the secrecy capacity is about two times higher than without AN, even though in the proposed scheme half of the time is used to transmit ANs, and the outage probability is about five times lower than that without AN.
