Topological superradiance in a degenerate Fermi gas

We predict the existence of a topological superradiant state in a two-component degenerate Fermi gas in a cavity. The superradiant light generation in the transversely driven cavity mode induces a cavity-assisted spin-orbit coupling in the system and opens a bulk gap at half-filling. This mechanism can simultaneously drive a topological phase transition in the system, yielding a topological superradiant phase. We map out the steady-state phase diagram of the system in the presence of an effective Zeeman field, and identify a critical quadracritical point beyond which the topological and the conventional superraidiant phase boundaries separate. We also propose to detect the topological phase transitions based on the unique signatures in the momentum-space density distribution.

Topological Spin Texture in a Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect has been recently discovered in experiment using thin-film topological insulator with ferromagnetic ordering and strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we investigate the spin degree of freedom of a QAH insulator and uncover a fundamental phenomenon that the edge states exhibit topologically stable spin texture in the boundary when a chiral-like symmetry is present. This result shows that edge states are chiral in both the orbital and spin degrees of freedom, and the chiral edge spin texture corresponds to the bulk topological states of the QAH insulator. We also study the potential applications of the edge spin texture in designing topological-state-based spin devices which might be applicable to future spintronic technologies.

Chiral Topological Orders in an Optical Raman Lattice

We find an optical Raman lattice without spin-orbit coupling showing chiral topological orders for cold atoms. Two incident plane-wave lasers are applied to generate simultaneously a double-well square lattice and periodic Raman couplings, the latter of which drive the nearest-neighbor hopping and create a staggered flux pattern across the lattice. Such a minimal setup is can yield the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the single particle regime, while in the interacting regime it achieves the $J_1$-$J_2$-$K$ model with all parameters controllable, which supports a chiral spin liquid phase. We further show that heating in the present optical Raman lattice is reduced by more than one order of magnitude compared with the conventional laser-assisted tunneling schemes. This suggests that the predicted topological states be well reachable with the current experimental capability.

Correlated spin currents generated by resonant crossed Andreev reflections in topological superconductors

Topological superconductors, which support Majorana fermion excitations, have been the subject of intense studies due to their novel transport properties and their potential applications in fault-tolerant quantum computations. Here we propose a new type of topological superconductors which can be used as a novel source of correlated spin currents. We show that inducing superconductivity on a AIII class topological insulator wire, which respects a chiral symmetry and supports protected fermionic end states, will result in a topological superconductor. This topological superconductor supports two topological phases with one or two Majorana fermion end states respectively. In the phase with two Majorana fermions, the superconductor can split Cooper pairs efficiently into electrons in two spatially separated leads due to Majorana induced resonant crossed Andreev reflections. The resulting currents in the leads are correlated and spin-polarized. Importantly, the proposed topological superconductors can be realized using quantum anomalous Hall insulators in proximity to superconductors.

Realization of 2D Spin-orbit Interaction and Exotic Topological Orders in Cold Atoms

Majorana zero bound mode exists in the vortex core of a chiral $p+ip$ superconductor or superfluid, which can be driven from an s-wave pairing state by two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We propose here a novel scheme based on realistic cold atom platforms to generate 2D SO interactions in a blue-detuned square optical lattice, and predict both the quantum anomalous Hall effect and chiral topological superfluid phase in the experimentally accessible parameter regimes. This work opens a new direction with experimental feasibility to observe non-Abelian topological orders in cold atom systems.

Non-Abelian Majorana Doublets in Time-Reversal Invariant Topological Superconductor

The study of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes advances our understanding of the fundamental physics in quantum matter, and pushes the potential applications of such exotic states to topological quantum computation. It has been shown that in two-dimensional (2D) and 1D chiral superconductors, the isolated Majorana fermions obey non-Abelian statistics. However, Majorana modes in a $Z_2$ time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor come in pairs due to Kramers' theorem. Therefore, braiding operations in TRI superconductors always exchange two pairs of Majoranas. In this work, we show interestingly that, due to the protection of time-reversal symmetry, non-Abelian statistics can be obtained in 1D TRI topological superconductors and may have advantages in applying to topological quantum computation. Furthermore, we unveil an intriguing phenomenon in the Josephson effect, that the periodicity of Josephson currents depends on the fermion parity of the superconducting state. This effect provides direct measurements of the topological qubit states in such 1D TRI superconductors.

Detecting Topological Phases in Cold Atoms

Chern insulators are band insulators which exhibit a gap in the bulk and gapless excitations in the edge. Detection of Chern insulators is a serious challenge in cold atoms since the Hall transport measurements are technically unrealistic for neutral atoms. By establishing a natural correspondence between the time-reversal invariant topological insulator and quantum anomalous Hall system, we show for a class of Chern insulators that the topology can be determined by only measuring Bloch eigenstates at highly symmetric points of the Brillouin zone (BZ). Furthermore, we introduce two experimental schemes including the spin-resolved Bloch oscillation to carry out the measurement. These schemes are highly feasible under realistic experimental conditions. Our results may provide a powerful tool to detect topological phases in cold atoms.

Manipulating Topological Edge Spins in One-Dimensional Optical Lattice

We propose to observe and manipulate topological edge spins in 1D optical lattice based on currently available experimental platforms. Coupling the atomic spin states to a laser-induced periodic Zeeman field, the lattice system can be driven into a symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase, which belongs to the chiral unitary (AIII) class protected by particle number conservation and chiral symmetries. In free-fermion case the SPT phase is classified by a $Z$ invariant which reduces to $Z_4$ with interactions. The zero edge modes of the SPT phase are spin-polarized, with left and right edge spins polarized to opposite directions and forming a topological spin-qubit (TSQ). We demonstrate a novel scheme to manipulate the zero modes and realize single spin control in optical lattice. The manipulation of TSQs has potential applications to quantum computation.

Manipulating Majorana Fermions in Quantum Nanowires with Broken Inversion Symmetry

We study a Majorana-carrying quantum wire, driven into a trivial phase by breaking the spatial inversion symmetry with a tilted external magnetic field. Interestingly, we predict that a supercurrent applied in the proximate superconductor is able to restore the topological phase and therefore the Majorana end-states. Using Abelian bosonization, we further confirm this result in the presence of electron-electron interactions and show a profound connection of this phenomenon to the physics of a one-dimensional doped Mott-insulator. The present results have important applications in e.g., realizing a supercurrent assisted braiding of Majorana fermions, which proves highly useful in topological quantum computation with realistic Majorana networks.

Quantum Memory Process with a Four-Level Atomic Ensemble

We examine in detail the quantum memory technique for photons in a double $Λ$ atomic ensemble in this work. The novel application of the present technique to create two different quantum probe fields as well as entangled states of them is proposed. A larger zero-degeneracy class besides dark-state subspace is investigated and the adiabatic condition is confirmed in the present model. We extend the single-mode quantum memory technique to the case with multi-mode probe fields, and reveal the exact pulse matching phenomenon between two quantized pulses in the present system.

Andreev Bound states in One Dimensional Topological Superconductor

We study the charge character of the Andreev bound states (ABSs) in one-dimensional topological superconductors with spatial inversion symmetry (SIS) breaking. Despite the absence of the SIS, we show a hidden symmetry for the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations around Fermi points in addition to the particle-hole symmetry. This hidden symmetry protects that the charge of the ABSs is solely dependent on the corresponding Fermi velocities. On the other hand, if the SIS is present, the ABSs are charge neutral, similar to Majorana fermions. We demonstrate that the charge of the ABSs can be experimentally measured in the tunneling transport spectroscopy from the resonant differential tunneling conductance.

The Scaling of the Anomalous Hall Effect in the Insulating Regime

We develop a theoretical approach to study the scaling of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the insulating regime, which is observed to be $σ_{xy}^{AH}\proptoσ_{xx}^{1.40\sim1.75}$ in experiments over a large range of materials. This scaling is qualitatively different from the ones observed in metals. Basing our theory on the phonon-assisted hopping mechanism and percolation theory, we derive a general formula for the anomalous Hall conductivity, and show that it scales with the longitudinal conductivity as $σ_{xy}^{AH}\simσ_{xx}^γ$ with $γ$ predicted to be $1.38\leqγ\leq1.76$, quantitatively in agreement with the experimental observations. Our result provides a clearer understanding of the AHE in the insulating regime and completes the scaling phase diagram of the AHE.

Spin dynamics in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime

We study the spin dynamics in a high-mobility two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with generic spin-orbit interactions (SOIs). We derive a set of spin dynamic equations which capture the purely exponential to the damped oscillatory spin evolution modes observed in different regimes of SOI strength. Hence we provide a full treatment of the D'yakonov-Perel's mechanism by using the microscopic linear response theory from the weak to the strong SOI limit. We show that the damped oscillatory modes appear when the electron scattering time is larger than half of the spin precession time due to the SOI, in agreement with recent observations. We propose a new way to measure the scattering time and the relative strength of Rashba and linear Dresselhaus SOIs based on these modes and optical grating experiments. We discuss the physical interpretation of each of these modes in the context of Rabi oscillation.

Correlation effects on topological insulator

The strong correlation effects on topological insulator are studied in a two-sublattice system with an onsite single-particle energy difference $Δ$ between two sublattices. At $Δ=0$, increasing the onsite interaction strength $U$ drives the transition from the quantum spin Hall insulating state to the non-topological antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating (AFMI) state. When $Δ$ is larger than a certain value, a topologically trivial band insulator or AFMI at small values of $U$ may change into a quantum anomalous Hall state with antiferromagnetic ordering at intermediate values of $U$. Further increasing $U$ drives the system back into the topologically trivial state of AFMI. The corresponding phenomena is observable in the solid state and cold atom systems. We also propose a scheme to realize and detect these effects in cold atom systems.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect with Cold Atoms Trapped in a Square Lattice

We propose an experimental scheme to realize and detect the quantum anomalous Hall effect in an anisotropic square optical lattice which can be generated from available experimental set-ups of double-well lattices with minor modifications. A periodic gauge potential induced by atom-light interaction is introduced to give a Peierls phase for the nearest-neighbor site hopping. The quantized anomalous Hall conductivity is investigated by calculating the Chern number as well as the chiral gapless edge states of our system. Furthermore, we show in detail the feasability for its experimental detection through light Bragg scattering of the edge and bulk states with which one can determine the topological phase transition from usual insulating phase to quantum anomalous Hall phase.

Control of Josephson current by Aharonov-Casher Phase in a Rashba Ring

We study the interference effect induced by the Aharonov-Casher phase on the Josephson current through a semiconducting ring attached to superconducting leads. Using a 1D model that incorporates spin-orbit coupling in the semiconducting ring, we calculate the Andreev levels analytically and numerically, and predict oscillations of the Josephson current due to the AC phase. This result is valid from the point contact limit to the long channel length limit, as defined by the ratio of the junction length and the BCS healing length. We show in the long channel length limit that the impurity scattering has no effect on the oscillation of the Josephson current, in contrast to the case of conductivity oscillations in a spin-orbit coupled ring system attached to normal leads where impurity scattering reduces the amplitude of oscillations. Our results suggest a new scheme to measure the AC phase with, in principle, higher sensitivity. In addition, this effect allows for control of the Josephson current through the gate voltage tuned AC phase.

Fractional Spin Hall Effect in Atomic Bose Gases

We propose fractional spin hall effect (FSHE) by coupling pseudospin states of cold bosonic atoms to optical fields. The present scheme is an extension to interacting bosonic system of the recent work \cite{liu,zhu} on optically induced spin hall effect in non-interacting atomic system. The system has two different types of ground states. The 1st type of ground state is a 1/3-factor Laughlin function, and has the property of chiral - anti-chiral interchange antisymmetry, while the 2nd type is shown to be a 1/4-factor wave function with chiral - anti-chiral symmetry. The fractional statistics corresponding to the fractional spin Hall states are studied in detail, and are discovered to be different from that corresponding to the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. Therefore the present FSHE can be distinguished from FQH regime in the measurement.

Massless Dirac Fermions in a Square Optical Lattice

We propose a novel scheme to simulate and observe massless Dirac fermions with cold atoms in a square optical lattice. A U(1) adiabatic phase is created by two laser beams for the tunneling of atoms between neighbor lattice sites. Properly adjusting the tunneling phase, we find that the energy spectrum has conical points in per Brillouin zone where band crossing occurs. Near these crossing points the quasiparticles and quasiholes can be considered as massless Dirac fermions. Furthermore, the anisotropic effects of massless Dirac fermions are obtained in the present square lattice model. The Dirac fermions as well as the anisotropic behaviors realizeded in our system can be experimentally detected with the Bragg spectroscopy technique.
