Effect of Induced Spin-Orbit Coupling for Atoms via Laser Fields

We propose an experimental scheme to study spin-orbit coupling effects in a of two-dimensional (2D) Fermi atomic gas cloud by coupling its internal electronic states (pseudospins) to radiation in a delta configuration. The induced spin-orbit coupling can be of the Dresselhaus and Rashba type with and without a Zeeman term. We show that the optically induced spin-orbit coupling can lead to a spin-dependent effective mass under appropriate condition, with one of them able to be tuned between positive and negative effective mass. As a direct observable we show that in the expansion dynamics of the atomic cloud the initial atomic cloud splits into two clouds for the positive effective mass case regime, and into four clouds for the negative effective mass regime.

Aharonov-Casher and spin Hall effects in two-dimensional mesoscopic ring structures with strong spin-orbit interaction

We study the quantum interference effects induced by the Aharonov-Casher phase in asymmetrically confined two-dimensional electron and heavy-hole ring structures systems taking into account the electrically tunable spin-orbit (SO) interaction. We have calculated the non-adiabatic transport properties of charges (heavy-holes and electrons) in two-probe thin ring structures and compare how the form of the SO coupling of the carries affects it. We show that both the SO splitting of the bands and the carrier density can be used to modulate the conductance through the ring. We show that the dependence on carrier density is due to the backscattering from the leads which shows pronounce resonances when the Fermi energy is close to the eigenenergy of the ring. We also calculate the spin Hall conductivity and longitudinal conductivity in four-probe rings as a function of the carrier density and SO interaction, demonstrating that for heavy-hole carriers both conductivities are larger than for electrons. Finally, we investigate the transport properties of mesoscopic rings with spatially inhomogeneous SO coupling. We show that devices with inhomogeneous SO interaction exhibit an electrically controlled spin-flipping mechanism.

Local spin dynamic arising from the non-perturbative SU(2) gauge field of the spin orbit effect

We use the non-perturbative gauge field approach to study the effects of spin orbit coupling on the dynamic of magnetic moment. We present a general equation of motion (EOM) which unifies i) the spin orbit coupling effect derived from the SU(2) spin gauge field, and ii) the moment chirality effect previously derived from the topological U(1)xU(1) rotation gauge under the adiabatic condition. We present a modified Landau-Liftshitz-Gilbert equation and discuss the implication of the modified EOM in various technological applications, such as current-induced switching and trajectory of magnetic moments in spin-valve multilayers, magnetic memory and diluted magnetic semiconductor.

Generation of Two-Flavor Vortex Atom Laser from a Five-State Medium

Two-flavor atom laser in a vortex state is obtained and analyzed via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) technique in a five-level $M$ type system by using two probe lights with $\pm z$-directional orbital angular momentum $\pm l\hbar$, respectively. Together with the original transfer technique of quantum states from light to matter waves, the present result can be extended to generate continuous two-flavor vortex atom laser with non-classical atoms.

Spin Hall utilizing U(1) and SU(2) gauge fields

We propose a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system in which an external magnetic (B) field with a small chirality is applied to provide a topological U(1) U(1) gauge field that separates conduction electrons of opposite spins in the transverse direction. Additionally, the vertical electric (E) field in the 2DEG, together with spin-orbit coupling, produces a SU(2) gauge field which reinforces / opposes the effect of the topological gauge. The system thus provides a tunable spin Hall effect, where an applied gate voltage on the 2DEG can be used to modulate the transverse spin current. As this method leads to the enhancement or cancellation of intrinsic spin Hall, it naturally distinguishes the extrinsic from the intrinsic effect.

Tightly Localized Stationary Pulses in Multi-Level Atomic System

We show the pulse matching phenomenon can be obtained in the general multi-level system with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). For this we find a novel way to create tightly localized stationary pulses by using counter-propagating pump fields. The present process is a spatial compression of excitation so that it allows us to shape and further intensify the localized stationary pulses, without using standing waves of pump fields or spatially modulated pump fields.

Manipulating Quantum States of Molecules Created via Photoassociation of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We show the quantum state transfer technique in two-color photoassociation (PA) of a Bose-Einstein condensate, where a quantized field is used to couple the free-bound transition from atom state to excited molecular state. Under the weak excitation condition, we find that quantum states of the quantized field can be transferred to the created molecular condensate. The feasibility of this technique is confirmed by considering the atomic and molecular decays discovered in the current PA experiments. The present results allow us to manipulate quantum states of molecules in the photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Spin Hall Effect in Atoms

We propose an optical means to realize a spin hall effect (SHE) in neutral atomic system by coupling the internal spin states of atoms to radiation. The interaction between the external optical fields and the atoms creates effective magnetic fields that act in opposite directions on "electrically" neutral atoms with opposite spin polarizations. This effect leads to a Landau level structure for each spin orientation in direct analogy with the familiar SHE in semiconductors. The conservation and topological properties of the spin current, and the creation of a pure spin current are discussed.

Topological structures of adiabatic phase for multi-level quantum systems

The topological properties of adiabatic gauge fields for multi-level (three-level in particular) quantum systems are studied in detail. Similar to the result that the adiabatic gauge field for SU(2) systems (e.g. two-level quantum system or angular momentum systems, etc) have a monopole structure, the curvature two-forms of the adiabatic holonomies for SU(3) three-level and SU(3) eight-level quantum systems are shown to have monopole-like (for all levels) or instanton-like (for the degenerate levels) structures.

Quantum Spin Current Induced Through Optical Fields

We propose a scheme to generate quantum spin current via optical dipole transition process. By coupling a three-level system based on the spin states of charged particles (electrons or holes in semiconductor) to the angular momentum states of the radiation, we show that a pure quantum spin current can be generated. No spin-orbit interaction is needed in this scheme. We also calculate the effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the created spin currents and show that the vertex correction of the spin hall conductivity in the ladder approximation is exactly zero.

Classical and quantum depinning of a domain wall with a spin-polarized current

We study in detail the classical and quantum depinning of a domain wall (DW) induced by a fast-varying spin-polarized current. By confirming the adiabatic condition for calculating the spin-torque in fast-varying current case, we show that the time-dependent spin current has two critical values that determine the classical depinning of DW. This discovery successfully explains the recent experiments. Furthermore, a feasible way is proposed to lower the threshold of spin currents and control the direction of DW's motion. Finally, the quantum properties for the depinning of DW are also investigated in this paper.

Dynamical Symmetry and Quantum Information Processing with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

We study in detail the interesting dynamical symmetry and its applications in various atomic systems with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in this paper. By discovering the symmetrical Lie group of various atomic systems, such as single-atomic-ensemble composed of complex $m$-level $(m>3)$ atoms, and $two$-atomic-ensemble and even multi-atomic-ensemble system composed of of $three$-level atoms etc., one can obtain the general definition of dark-state polaritons (DSPs), and then the dark-states of these different systems. The symmetrical properties of the multi-level system and multi-atomic-ensemble system are shown to be dependent on some characteristic parameters of the EIT system. Furthermore, a controllable scheme to generate quantum entanglement between lights or atoms via quantized DSPs theory is discussed and the robustness of this scheme is analyzed by confirming the validity of adiabatic passage conditions in this paper.

A Scheme of Generating and Spatially Separating Two-Component Entangled Atom Lasers

Entanglement of remote atom lasers is obtained via quantum state transfer technique from lights to matter waves in a five-level $M$-type system. The considered atom-atom collisions can yield an effective Kerr susceptibility for this system and lead to the self- and cross- phase modulation between the two output atom lasers. This effect results in generation of entangled states of output fields. Particularly, under different conditions of space-dependent control fields, the entanglement of atom lasers and of atom-light fields can be obtained, respectively. Furthermore, based on the Bell-state measurement, an useful scheme is proposed to spatially separate the generated entangled atom lasers.

Possibility of Inhomogeneous Coupling Leading to Decoherence in an Electromagnetically-Induced-Transparency Quantum-Memory Process

The effect of inhomogeneous coupling between three-level atoms and external light fields is studied in the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) quantum memory techqnique. By introducing a subensemble-atomic system to deal with present inhomogeneous coupling case, we find there is a non-symmetric dark-state subspace (DSS) that allows the EIT quantum memory technique to function perfectly. This shows that such memory scheme can work ideally even if the atomic state is very far from being a symmetric one.

Dynamics of Domain Wall in a Biaxial Ferromagnet With Spin-torque

The dynamics of the domain wall (DW) in a biaxial ferromagnet interacting with a spin-polarized current are described by sine-gordon (SG) equation coupled with Gilbert damping term in this paper. Within our frame-work of this model, we obtain a threshold of the current in the motion of a single DW with the perturbation theory on kink soliton solution to the corresponding ferromagnetic system, and the threshold is shown to be dependent on the Gilbert damping term. Also, the motion properties of the DW are discussed for the zero- and nonzero-damping cases, which shows that our theory to describe the dynamics of the DW are self-consistent.

Solitons Formed by Dark-State Polaritons in Electromagnetic Induced Transparency

We show the possible stable soliton generation for the dark-state polaritons (DSPs) in an electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) medium composed of $Λ$-type atoms. Whether the solitons are dark or bright can be controlled by the coupling field intensity and the one photon detuning of the probe field. Besides, the velocity and time width of the solitons also can be adjusted by the coupling light.

Technique of quantum state transfer for a double Lambda atomic beam

The transfer technique of quantum states from light to collective atomic excitations in a double $Λ$ type system is extended to matter waves in this paper, as a novel scheme towards making a continuous atom laser. The intensity of the output matter waves is found to be determined by the initial relative phase of the two independent coherent probe lights, which may indicate an interesting method for the measurement of initial relative phase of two independent light sources.
