Beam Domain Massive MIMO for Optical Wireless Communications with Transmit Lens

This paper presents a novel massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission in beam domain for optical wireless communications. The optical base station equipped with massive optical transmitters communicates with a number of user terminals (UTs) through a transmit lens. Focusing on LED transmitters, we analyze light refraction of the lens and establish a channel model for optical massive MIMO transmissions. For a large number of LEDs, channel vectors of different UTs become asymptotically orthogonal. We investigate the maximum ratio transmission and regularized zero-forcing precoding in the optical massive MIMO system, and propose a linear precoding design to maximize the sum rate. We further design the precoding when the number of transmitters grows asymptotically large, and show that beam division multiple access (BDMA) transmission achieves the asymptotically optimal performance for sum rate maximization. Unlike optical MIMO without a transmit lens, BDMA can increase the sum rate proportionally to $2K$ and $K$ under the total and per transmitter power constraints, respectively, where $K$ is the number of UTs. In the non-asymptotic case, we prove the orthogonality conditions of the optimal power allocation in beam domain and propose efficient beam allocation algorithms. Numerical results confirm the significantly improved performance of our proposed beam domain optical massive MIMO communication approaches.

Beam domain secure transmission for massive MIMO communications

We investigate the optimality and power allocation algorithm of beam domain transmission for single-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a multi-antenna passive eavesdropper. Focusing on the secure massive MIMO downlink transmission with only statistical channel state information of legitimate users and the eavesdropper at base station, we introduce a lower bound on the achievable ergodic secrecy sum-rate, from which we derive the condition for eigenvectors of the optimal input covariance matrices. The result shows that beam domain transmission can achieve optimal performance in terms of secrecy sum-rate lower bound maximization. For the case of single-antenna legitimate users, we prove that it is optimal to allocate no power to the beams where the beam gains of the eavesdropper are stronger than those of legitimate users in order to maximize the secrecy sum-rate lower bound. Then, motivated by the concave-convex procedure and the large dimension random matrix theory, we develop an efficient iterative and convergent algorithm to optimize power allocation in the beam domain. Numerical simulations demonstrate the tightness of the secrecy sum-rate lower bound and the near-optimal performance of the proposed iterative algorithm.

Omnidirectional Precoding and Combining Based Synchronization for Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we design the precoding matrices at the base station side and the combining matrices at the user terminal side for initial downlink synchronization in millimeter wave massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. First, we demonstrate two basic requirements for the precoding and combining matrices, including that all the entries therein should have constant amplitude under the implementation architecture constraint, and the average transmission power over the total K time slots taking for synchronization should be constant for any spatial direction. Then, we derive the optimal synchronization detector based on generalized likelihood ratio test. By utilizing this detector, we analyze the effect of the precoding and combining matrices to the missed detection probability and the false alarm probability, respectively, and present the corresponding conditions that should be satisfied. It is shown that, both of the precoding and combining matrices should guarantee the perfect omnidirectional coverage at each time slot, i.e., the average transmission power at each time slot is constant for any spatial direction, which is more strict than the second basic requirement mentioned above. We also show that such omnidirectional precoding matrices and omnidirectional combining matrices exist only when both of the number of transmit streams and the number of receive streams are equal to or greater than two. In this case, we propose to utilize Golay complementary pairs and Golay-Hadamard matrices to design the precoding and combining matrices. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the propose approach.

A Survey on MIMO Transmission with Discrete Input Signals: Technical Challenges, Advances, and Future Trends

Multiple antennas have been exploited for spatial multiplexing and diversity transmission in a wide range of communication applications. However, most of the advances in the design of high speed wireless multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems are based on information-theoretic principles that demonstrate how to efficiently transmit signals conforming to Gaussian distribution. Although the Gaussian signal is capacity-achieving, signals conforming to discrete constellations are transmitted in practical communication systems. As a result, this paper is motivated to provide a comprehensive overview on MIMO transmission design with discrete input signals. We first summarize the existing fundamental results for MIMO systems with discrete input signals. Then, focusing on the basic point-to-point MIMO systems, we examine transmission schemes based on three most important criteria for communication systems: the mutual information driven designs, the mean square error driven designs, and the diversity driven designs. Particularly, a unified framework which designs low complexity transmission schemes applicable to massive MIMO systems in upcoming 5G wireless networks is provided in the first time. Moreover, adaptive transmission designs which switch among these criteria based on the channel conditions to formulate the best transmission strategy are discussed. Then, we provide a survey of the transmission designs with discrete input signals for multiuser MIMO scenarios, including MIMO uplink transmission, MIMO downlink transmission, MIMO interference channel, and MIMO wiretap channel. Additionally, we discuss the transmission designs with discrete input signals for other systems using MIMO technology. Finally, technical challenges which remain unresolved at the time of writing are summarized and the future trends of transmission designs with discrete input signals are addressed.

Frequency Offset Estimation and Training Sequence Design for MIMO OFDM

This paper addresses carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation and training sequence design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over frequency selective fading channels. By exploiting the orthogonality of the training sequences in the frequency domain, integer CFO (ICFO) is estimated. {With the uniformly spaced non-zero pilots in the training sequences} and the corresponding geometric mapping, fractional CFO (FCFO) is estimated through the roots of a real polynomial. Furthermore, the condition for the training sequences to guarantee estimation identifiability is developed. Through the analysis of the correlation property of the training sequences, two types of sub-optimal training sequences generated from the Chu sequence are constructed. Simulation results verify the good performance of the CFO estimator assisted by the proposed training sequences.

Energy Efficient Joint Resource Allocation and Power Control for D2D Communications

In this paper, joint resource allocation and power control for energy efficient device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular networks are investigated. The resource and power are optimized for maximization of the energy efficiency (EE) of D2D communications. Exploiting the properties of fractional programming, we transform the original nonconvex optimization problem in fractional form into an equivalent optimization problem in subtractive form. Then, an efficient iterative resource allocation and power control scheme is proposed. In each iteration, part of the constraints of the EE optimization problem is removed by exploiting the penalty function approach. We further propose a novel two-layer approach which allows to find the optimum at each iteration by decoupling the EE optimization problem of joint resource allocation and power control into two separate steps. In the first layer, the optimal power values are obtained by solving a series of maximization problems through root-finding with or without considering the loss of cellular users' rates. In the second layer, the formulated optimization problem belongs to a classical resource allocation problem with single allocation format which admits a network flow formulation so that it can be solved to optimality. Simulation results demonstrate the remarkable improvements in terms of EE by using the proposed iterative resource allocation and power control scheme.

Simplified Frequency Offset Estimation for MIMO OFDM Systems

This paper addresses a simplified frequency offset estimator for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over frequency selective fading channels. By exploiting the good correlation property of the training sequences, which are constructed from the Chu sequence, carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation is obtained through factor decomposition for the derivative of the cost function with great complexity reduction. The mean-squared error (MSE) of the CFO estimation is derived to optimize the key parameter of the simplified estimator and also to evaluate the estimator performance. Simulation results confirm the good performance of the training-assisted CFO estimator.

Frequency Offset Estimation for OFDM Systems with a Novel Frequency Domain Training Sequence

A novel frequency domain training sequence and the corresponding carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimator are proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over frequency-selective fading channels. The proposed frequency domain training sequence comprises two types of pilot tones, namely distinctively spaced pilot tones with high energies and uniformly spaced ones with low energies. Based on the distinctively spaced pilot tones, integer CFO estimation is accomplished. After the subcarriers occupied by the distinctively spaced pilot tones and their adjacent subcarriers are nulled for the sake of interference cancellation, fractional CFO estimation is executed according to the uniformly spaced pilot tones. By exploiting a predefined lookup table making the best of the structure of the distinctively spaced pilot tones, computational complexity of the proposed CFO estimator can be decreased considerably. With the aid of the uniformly spaced pilot tones generated from Chu sequence with cyclically orthogonal property, the ability of the proposed estimator to combat multipath effect is enhanced to a great extent. Simulation results illustrate the good performance of the proposed CFO estimator.

Energy Efficient Non-Cooperative Power Control in Small Cell Networks

In this paper, energy efficient power control for small cells underlaying a macro cellular network is investigated. We formulate the power control problem in self-organizing small cell networks as a non-cooperative game, and propose a distributed energy efficient power control scheme, which allows the small base stations (SBSs) to take individual decisions for attaining the Nash equilibrium (NE) with minimum information exchange. Specially, in the non-cooperative power control game, a non-convex optimization problem is formulated for each SBS to maximize their energy efficiency (EE). By exploiting the properties of parameter-free fractional programming and the concept of perspective function, the non-convex optimization problem for each SBS is transformed into an equivalent constrained convex optimization problem. Then, the constrained convex optimization problem is converted into an unconstrained convex optimization problem by exploiting the mixed penalty function method. The inequality constraints are eliminated by introducing the logarithmic barrier functions and the equality constraint is eliminated by introducing the quadratic penalty function. We also theoretically show the existence and the uniqueness of the NE in the non-cooperative power control game. Simulation results show remarkable improvements in terms of EE by using the proposed scheme.

REEL-BF Design: Achieving the SDP Bound for Downlink Beamforming with Arbitrary Shaping Constraints

This paper considers the beamforming design for a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink with an arbitrary number of (context-specific) shaping constraints. In this setup, the state-of-the-art beamforming schemes cannot attain the well-known performance bound promised by the semidefinite program (SDP) relaxation technique. To close the gap, we propose a redundant-signal embedded linear beamforming (REEL-BF) scheme, where each user is assigned with one information beamformer and several shaping beamformers. It is shown that the proposed REEL-BF scheme can perform general rank-$K$ beamforming for user symbols in a low-complexity and structured manner. In addition, sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee that the REEL-BF scheme always achieves the SDP bound for linear beamforming schemes. Based on such conditions, an efficient algorithm is then developed to obtain the optimal REEL-BF solution in polynomial time. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme enjoys substantial performance gains over the existing alternatives.

BDMA for Millimeter-Wave/Terahertz Massive MIMO Transmission with Per-Beam Synchronization

We propose beam division multiple access (BDMA) with per-beam synchronization (PBS) in time and frequency for wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission over millimeter-wave (mmW)/Terahertz (THz) bands. We first introduce a physically motivated beam domain channel model for massive MIMO and demonstrate that the envelopes of the beam domain channel elements tend to be independent of time and frequency when both the numbers of antennas at base station and user terminals (UTs) tend to infinity. Motivated by the derived beam domain channel properties, we then propose PBS for mmW/THz massive MIMO. We show that both the effective delay and Doppler frequency spreads of wideband massive MIMO channels with PBS are reduced by a factor of the number of UT antennas compared with the conventional synchronization approaches. Subsequently, we apply PBS to BDMA, investigate beam scheduling to maximize the achievable ergodic rates for both uplink and downlink BDMA, and develop a greedy beam scheduling algorithm. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of BDMA with PBS for mmW/THz wideband massive MIMO systems in typical mobility scenarios.

Omnidirectional Space-Time Block Coding for Common Information Broadcasting in Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we design space-time block codes (STBCs) to broadcast the common information omnidirectionally in a massive MIMO downlink. To reduce the burden of the downlink channel estimation and achieve partial spatial diversity from base station (BS) transmit antennas, we propose channel-independently precoded low-dimensional STBC. The precoding matrix and the signal constellation in the low-dimensional STBC are jointly designed to guarantee omnidirectional coverage at any instant time and sufficiently utilize the power amplifier capacities of BS transmit antennas, and at the same time, achieve the full diversity of the low-dimensional STBC. Under this framework, several designs are presented. To provide transmit diversity order of two, a precoded Alamouti code is proposed, which has a fast symbol-wise maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding. To provide transmit diversity order of four, three types of STBCs are proposed, being referred to as precoded orthogonal STBC (OSTBC), precoded quasi-orthogonal STBC (QOSTBC), and precoded coordinate interleaved orthogonal design (CIOD), respectively. The last two codes have the same complexity for pair-wise ML decoding, while precoded QOSTBC has a higher coding gain when the bit rate is lower than or equal to 4 bps/Hz, and precoded CIOD has a higher coding gain when the bit rate is higher than 4 bps/Hz. Precoded OSTBC has a higher decoding complexity and a lower coding gain than the other two codes, since in the precoded OSTBC the information symbols need to be jointly designed and decoded. Moreover, a precoded no-zero-entry Toeplitz code and a precoded no-zero-entry overlapped Alamouti code are also proposed. These two codes can achieve a higher diversity order with linear receivers.

Joint Source-Relay Design for Full--Duplex MIMO AF Relay Systems

The performance of full-duplex (FD) relay systems can be greatly impacted by the self-interference (SI) at relays. By exploiting multi-antenna in FD relay systems, the spectral efficiency of FD relay systems can be enhanced through spatial SI mitigation. This paper studies joint source transmit beamforming and relay processing to achieve rate maximization for FD MIMO amplify-and-forward (AF) relay systems with consideration of relay processing delay. The problem is difficult to solve due mainly to the SI constraint induced by the relay processing delay. In this paper, we first present a sufficient condition under which the relay amplification matrix has rank one structure. Then, for the case of rank one amplification matrix, the rate maximization problem is equivalently simplified into an unconstrained problem which can be locally solved using gradient ascent method. Next, we propose a penalty-based algorithmic framework, called P-BSUM, for a class of constrained optimization problems which have difficult equality constraints in addition to some convex constraints. By rewriting the rate maximization problem with a set of auxiliary variables, we apply the P-BSUM algorithm to the rate maximization problem in the general case. Finally, numerical results validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms and show that the joint source-relay design approach under the rank one assumption could be strictly suboptimal as compared to the P-BSUM-based joint source-relay design approach.

Free Deterministic Equivalents for the Analysis of MIMO Multiple Access Channel

In this paper, a free deterministic equivalent is proposed for the capacity analysis of the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) with a more general channel model compared to previous works. Specifically, a MIMO MAC with one base station (BS) equipped with several distributed antenna sets is considered. Each link between a user and a BS antenna set forms a jointly correlated Rician fading channel. The analysis is based on operator-valued free probability theory, which broadens the range of applicability of free probability techniques tremendously. By replacing independent Gaussian random matrices with operator-valued random variables satisfying certain operator-valued freeness relations, the free deterministic equivalent of the considered channel Gram matrix is obtained. The Shannon transform of the free deterministic equivalent is derived, which provides an approximate expression for the ergodic input-output mutual information of the channel. The sum-rate capacity achieving input covariance matrices are also derived based on the approximate ergodic input-output mutual information. The free deterministic equivalent results are easy to compute, and simulation results show that these approximations are numerically accurate and computationally efficient.

An Overview of Transmission Theory and Techniques of Large-scale Antenna Systems for 5G Wireless Communications

To meet the future demand for huge traffic volume of wireless data service, the research on the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems has been undertaken in recent years. It is expected that the spectral and energy efficiencies in 5G mobile communication systems should be ten-fold higher than the ones in the fourth generation (4G) mobile communication systems. Therefore, it is important to further exploit the potential of spatial multiplexing of multiple antennas. In the last twenty years, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna techniques have been considered as the key techniques to increase the capacity of wireless communication systems. When a large-scale antenna array (which is also called massive MIMO) is equipped in a base-station, or a large number of distributed antennas (which is also called large-scale distributed MIMO) are deployed, the spectral and energy efficiencies can be further improved by using spatial domain multiple access. This paper provides an overview of massive MIMO and large-scale distributed MIMO systems, including spectral efficiency analysis, channel state information (CSI) acquisition, wireless transmission technology, and resource allocation.

Channel Acquisition for Massive MIMO-OFDM with Adjustable Phase Shift Pilots

We propose adjustable phase shift pilots (APSPs) for channel acquisition in wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to reduce the pilot overhead. Based on a physically motivated channel model, we first establish a relationship between channel space-frequency correlations and the channel power angle-delay spectrum in the massive antenna array regime, which reveals the channel sparsity in massive MIMO-OFDM. With this channel model, we then investigate channel acquisition, including channel estimation and channel prediction, for massive MIMO-OFDM with APSPs. We show that channel acquisition performance in terms of sum mean square error can be minimized if the user terminals' channel power distributions in the angle-delay domain can be made non-overlapping with proper phase shift scheduling. A simplified pilot phase shift scheduling algorithm is developed based on this optimal channel acquisition condition. The performance of APSPs is investigated for both one symbol and multiple symbol data models. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed APSP approach can provide substantial performance gains in terms of achievable spectral efficiency over the conventional phase shift orthogonal pilot approach in typical mobility scenarios.

Large System Analysis of Cognitive Radio Network via Partially-Projected Regularized Zero-Forcing Precoding

In this paper, we consider a cognitive radio (CR) network in which a secondary multiantenna base station (BS) attempts to communicate with multiple secondary users (SUs) using the radio frequency spectrum that is originally allocated to multiple primary users (PUs). Here, we employ partially-projected regularized zero-forcing (PP-RZF) precoding to control the amount of interference at the PUs and to minimize inter-SUs interference. The PP-RZF precoding partially projects the channels of the SUs into the null space of the channels from the secondary BS to the PUs. The regularization parameter and the projection control parameter are used to balance the transmissions to the PUs and the SUs. However, the search for the optimal parameters, which can maximize the ergodic sum-rate of the CR network, is a demanding process because it involves Monte-Carlo averaging. Then, we derive a deterministic expression for the ergodic sum-rate achieved by the PP-RZF precoding using recent advancements in large dimensional random matrix theory. The deterministic equivalent enables us to efficiently determine the two critical parameters in the PP-RZF precoding because no Monte-Carlo averaging is required. Several insights are also obtained through the analysis.
