Model checking for generalized linear models: a dimension-reduction model-adaptive approach

Local smoothing testing that is based on multivariate nonparametric regression estimation is one of the main model checking methodologies in the literature. However, relevant tests suffer from the typical curse of dimensionality resulting in slow convergence rates to their limits under the null hypotheses and less deviation from the null under alternatives. This problem leads tests to not well maintain the significance level and to be less sensitive to alternatives. In this paper, a dimension-reduction model-adaptive test is proposed for generalized linear models. The test behaves like a local smoothing test as if the model were univariate, and can be consistent against any global alternatives and can detect local alternatives distinct from the null at a fast rate that existing local smoothing tests can achieve only when the model is univariate. Simulations are carried out to examine the performance of our methodology. A real data analysis is conducted for illustration. The method can readily be extended to global smoothing methodology and other testing problems.

Topology optimization based on moving deformable components: A new computational framework

In the present work, a new computational framework for structural topology optimization based on the concept of moving deformable components is proposed. Compared with the traditional pixel or node point-based solution framework, the proposed solution paradigm can incorporate more geometry and mechanical information into topology optimization directly and therefore render the solution process more flexible. It also has the great potential to reduce the computational burden associated with topology optimization substantially. Some representative examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Transformed sufficient dimension reduction

A novel general framework is proposed in this paper for dimension reduction in regression to fill the gap between linear and fully nonlinear dimension reduction. The main idea is to transform first each of the raw predictors monotonically, and then search for a low-dimensional projection in the space defined by the transformed variables. Both user-specified and data-driven transformations are suggested. In each case, the methodology is discussed first in a general manner, and a representative method, as an example, is then proposed and evaluated by simulation. The proposed methods are applied to a real data set for illustration.

Matrix-free GPU implementation of a preconditioned conjugate gradient solver for anisotropic elliptic PDEs

Many problems in geophysical and atmospheric modelling require the fast solution of elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) in "flat" three dimensional geometries. In particular, an anisotropic elliptic PDE for the pressure correction has to be solved at every time step in the dynamical core of many numerical weather prediction models, and equations of a very similar structure arise in global ocean models, subsurface flow simulations and gas and oil reservoir modelling. The elliptic solve is often the bottleneck of the forecast, and an algorithmically optimal method has to be used and implemented efficiently. Graphics Processing Units have been shown to be highly efficient for a wide range of applications in scientific computing, and recently iterative solvers have been parallelised on these architectures. We describe the GPU implementation and optimisation of a Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) algorithm for the solution of a three dimensional anisotropic elliptic PDE for the pressure correction in NWP. Our implementation exploits the strong vertical anisotropy of the elliptic operator in the construction of a suitable preconditioner. As the algorithm is memory bound, performance can be improved significantly by reducing the amount of global memory access. We achieve this by using a matrix-free implementation which does not require explicit storage of the matrix and instead recalculates the local stencil. Global memory access can also be reduced by rewriting the algorithm using loop fusion and we show that this further reduces the runtime on the GPU. We demonstrate the performance of our matrix-free GPU code by comparing it to a sequential CPU implementation and to a matrix-explicit GPU code which uses existing libraries. The absolute performance of the algorithm for different problem sizes is quantified in terms of floating point throughput and global memory bandwidth.

Meshless simulation for thermo-mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes based on the thermal-related higher order Cauchy-Born rule

In the present paper, a temperature-dependent meshless numerical framework based on the thermo-related quasi-continuum constitutive model is developed for predicting the thermal mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) at finite temperature. The extended thermal-related higher order Cauchy-Born (THCB) rule included second order deformation gradient relates the deformation of bond vectors of the atomic system and that of the continuous medium, which can capture the curvature effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) conveniently. Helmholtz free energy is employed to allow for the thermal effect of SWCNTs. In the meshless numerical implementations of the theory, the Newton iteration method is applied to find the equilibrium configuration of a SWCNT subjected to large deformation at a prescribed temperature only with the nodal displace parameters as optimization variables. The finite deformation behaviors of armchair and zigzag SWCNTs under axial compression and torsion are tested. It is shown that the simulation results are in good agreement with those obtained by molecular dynamic methods even with fewer meshless nodes used.

Non-slipping adhesive contact of rigid cylinder on an elastic power-law graded half-space

In this paper, adhesive contact of a rigid cylinder on an elastic power-law graded half-space is studied analytically with the theory of weakly singular integral equation and orthogonal polynomial method. Emphasis is placed on the coupling effect between tangential and normal directions which was often neglected in previous works. Our analysis shows that the coupling effect tends to minimize the contact area in the compressive regime. The effect of bending moment on the adhesion behavior is also examined. Like a pull-off force, there also exist a critical bending moment at which the cylinder can be bended apart from the substrate. However, unlike pull-off force, the critical bending moment is insensitive to the gradient exponent of the graded material.
