Multipair Massive MIMO Two-Way Full-Duplex Relay Systems with Hardware Impairments

Hardware impairments, such as phase noise, quantization errors, non-linearities, and noise amplification, have baneful effects on wireless communications. In this paper, we investigate the effect of hardware impairments on multipair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way full-duplex relay systems with amplify-and-forward scheme. More specifically, novel closed-form approximate expressions for the spectral efficiency are derived to obtain some important insights into the practical design of the considered system. When the number of relay antennas $N$ increases without bound, we propose a hardware scaling law, which reveals that the level of hardware impairments that can be tolerated is roughly proportional to $\sqrt{N}$. This new result inspires us to design low-cost and practical multipair massive MIMO two-way full-duplex relay systems. Moreover, the optimal number of relay antennas is derived to maximize the energy efficiency. Finally, Motor-Carlo simulation results are provided to validate our analytical results.

Novel Device-to-Device Discovery Scheme based on Random Backoff in LTE-Advanced Networks

Device-to-Device (D2D) discovery is a key enabler of D2D communications for the direct exchange of local area traffic between proximity users (UEs) to improve spectral efficiency. The direct D2D discovery relies on the capabilities of the D2D UEs to autonomously indicate their presence to proximity D2D UEs. {Despite} its potential of reducing energy and signalling burden, the direct D2D discovery {has not drawn adequate attention}. In this paper, we propose a direct D2D discovery scheme based on the random backoff procedure, where D2D UEs randomly choose a backoff interval and retransmit a beacon. Compared with existing schemes, the performance of the proposed scheme can be significantly enhanced in terms of the discovery probability and the discovery delay. Several useful guidelines for its design are proposed based on our analysis. Finally, numerical results provide valuable insights on the performance tradeoff inherent to the proposed D2D discovery scheme.

A sequential surrogate method for reliability analysis based on radial basis function

A radial basis function (RBF) based sequential surrogate reliability method (SSRM) is proposed, in which a special optimization problem is solved to update the surrogate model of the limit state function (LSF) iteratively. The objective of the optimization problem is to find a new point to maximize the probability density function (PDF), subject to the constraints that the new point is on the approximated LSF and the minimum distance to the existing points is greater than or equal to the given distance. By updating the surrogate model with the new points, the surrogate model of the LSF becomes more and more accurate in the important region with a high failure probability and on the LSF boundary. Moreover, the accuracy of the unimportant region is also improved within the iteration due to the minimum distance constraint. SSRM takes advantage of the information of PDF and LSF to capture the failure features, which decreases the number of the expensive LSF evaluations. Six numerical examples show that SSRM improves the accuracy of the surrogate model in the important region around the failure boundary with small number of samples and has better adaptability to the nonlinear LSF, hence increases the accuracy and efficiency of the reliability analysis.

Non-Orthogonal Random Access (NORA) for 5G Networks

The massive amounts of machine-type user equipments (UEs) will be supported in the future fifth generation (5G) networks. However, the potential large random access (RA) delay calls for a new RA scheme and for a detailed assessment of its performance. Motivated by the key idea of non-orthogonal multiple access, the non-orthogonal random access (NORA) scheme based on successive interference cancellation (SIC) is proposed in this paper to alleviate the access congestion problem. Specifically, NORA utilizes the difference of time of arrival to identify multiple UEs with the identical preamble, and enables power domain multiplexing of collided UEs in the following access process, while the base station performs SIC based on the channel conditions obtained through preamble detection. Our analysis show that the performance of NORA is superior to the conventional orthogonal random access (ORA) scheme in terms of the preamble collision probability, access success probability and throughput of random access. Simulation results verify our analysis and further show that our NORA scheme can improve the number of the supported UEs by more than 30%. Moreover, the number of preamble transmissions and the access delay for successfully accessed UEs are also reduced significantly by using the proposed random access scheme.

Performance Analysis of Mixed-ADC Massive MIMO Systems over Rician Fading Channels

The practical deployment of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in future fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems is challenging due to its high hardware cost and power consumption. One promising solution to address this challenge is to adopt the low-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) architecture. However, the practical implementation of such architecture is challenging due to the required complex signal processing to compensate the coarse quantization caused by low-resolution ADCs. Therefore, few high-resolution ADCs are reserved in the recently proposed mixed-ADC architecture to enable low-complexity transceiver algorithms. In contrast to previous works over Rayleigh fading channels, we investigate the performance of mixed-ADC massive MIMO systems over the Rician fading channel, which is more general for the 5G scenarios like Internet of Things (IoT). Specially, novel closed-form approximate expressions for the uplink achievable rate are derived for both cases of perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI). With the increasing Rician $K$-factor, the derived results show that the achievable rate will converge to a fixed value. We also obtain the power-scaling law that the transmit power of each user can be scaled down proportionally to the inverse of the number of base station (BS) antennas for both perfect and imperfect CSI. Moreover, we reveal the trade-off between the achievable rate and energy efficiency with respect to key system parameters including the quantization bits, number of BS antennas, Rician $K$-factor, user transmit power, and CSI quality. Finally, numerical results are provided to show that the mixed-ADC architecture can achieve a better energy-rate trade-off compared with the ideal infinite-resolution and low-resolution ADC architectures.

On High-Order Capacity Statistics of Spectrum Aggregation Systems over $κ$-$μ$ and $κ$-$μ$ shadowed Fading Channels

The frequency scarcity imposed by fast growing demand for mobile data service requires promising spectrum aggregation systems. The so-called higher-order statistics (HOS) of the channel capacity is a suitable metric on the system performance. While prior relevant works have improved our knowledge on the HOS characterization of spectrum aggregation systems, an analytical framework encompassing generalized fading models of interest is not yet available. In this paper, we pursue a detailed HOS analysis of $κ$-$μ$ and $κ$-$μ$ shadowed fading channels by deriving novel and exact expressions. Furthermore, the simplified HOS expressions for the asymptotically low and high signal-to-noise regimes are derived. Several important statistical measures, such as amount of fading, amount of dispersion, reliability, skewness, and kurtosis, are obtained by using the HOS results. More importantly, the useful implications of system and fading parameters on spectrum aggregation systems are investigated for channel selection. Finally, all derived expressions are validated via Monte-Carlo simulations.

Spectrum Sharing in RF-Powered Cognitive Radio Networks using Game Theory

We investigate the spectrum sharing problem of a radio frequency (RF)-powered cognitive radio network, where a multi-antenna secondary user (SU) harvests energy from RF signals radiated by a primary user (PU) to boost its available energy before information transmission. In this paper, we consider that both the PU and SU are rational and self-interested. Based on whether the SU helps forward the PU's information, we develop two different operation modes for the considered network, termed as non-cooperative and cooperative modes. In the non-cooperative mode, the SU harvests energy from the PU and then use its available energy to transmit its own information without generating any interference to the primary link. In the cooperative mode, the PU employs the SU to relay its information by providing monetary incentives and the SU splits its energy for forwarding the PU's information as well as transmitting its own information. Optimization problems are respectively formulated for both operation modes, which constitute a Stackelberg game with the PU as a leader and the SU as a follower. We analyze the Stackelberg game by deriving solutions to the optimization problems and the Stackelberg Equilibrium (SE) is subsequently obtained. Simulation results show that the performance of the Stackelberg game can approach that of the centralized optimization scheme when the distance between the SU and its receiver is large enough.

Noise Robust IOA/CAS Speech Separation and Recognition System For The Third 'CHIME' Challenge

This paper presents the contribution to the third 'CHiME' speech separation and recognition challenge including both front-end signal processing and back-end speech recognition. In the front-end, Multi-channel Wiener filter (MWF) is designed to achieve background noise reduction. Different from traditional MWF, optimized parameter for the tradeoff between noise reduction and target signal distortion is built according to the desired noise reduction level. In the back-end, several techniques are taken advantage to improve the noisy Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) performance including Deep Neural Network (DNN), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long short-term memory (LSTM) using medium vocabulary, Lattice rescoring with a big vocabulary language model finite state transducer, and ROVER scheme. Experimental results show the proposed system combining front-end and back-end is effective to improve the ASR performance.

Handling Mobility in Dense Networks

Network densification is one of key technologies in future networks to significantly increase network capacity. The gain obtained by network densification for fixed terminals have been studied and proved. However for mobility users, there are a number of issues, such as more frequent handover, packet loss due to high mobility, interference management and so on. The conventional solutions are to handover high speed mobiles to macro base stations or multicast traffic to multiple base stations. These solutions fail to exploit the capacity of dense networks and overuse the backhaul capacity. In this paper we propose a set of solutions to systematically solve the technical challenges of mobile dense networks. We introduce network architecture together with data transmission protocols to support mobile users. A software-defined protocol (SDP) concept is presented so that combinations of transport protocols and physical layer functions can be optimized and triggered on demand. Our solutions can significantly boost performance of dense networks and simplify the packet handling process. Importantly, the gain brought by network densification to fixed users can also be achieved for mobile users.

Maximizing Mobile Coverage via Optimal Deployment of Base Station and Relays

Deploying relays and/or mobile base stations is a major means of extending the coverage of a wireless network. This paper presents models, analytical results, and algorithms to answer two related questions: The first is where to deploy relays in order to extend the reach from a base station to the maximum; the second is where to deploy a mobile base station and how many relays are needed to reach any point in a given area. Simple time-division and frequency-division scheduling schemes as well as an end-to-end data rate requirement are assumed. An important use case of the results is in the Public Safety Broadband Network, in which deploying relays and mobile base stations is often crucial to provide coverage to an incident scene.

Min Flow Rate Maximization for Software Defined Radio Access Networks

We consider a heterogeneous network (HetNet) of base stations (BSs) connected via a backhaul network of routers and wired/wireless links with limited capacity. The optimal provision of such networks requires proper resource allocation across the radio access links in conjunction with appropriate traffic engineering within the backhaul network. In this paper we propose an efficient algorithm for joint resource allocation across the wireless links and the flow control within the backhaul network. The proposed algorithm, which maximizes the minimum rate among all the users and/or flows, is based on a decomposition approach that leverages both the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) and the weighted-MMSE (WMMSE) algorithm. We show that this algorithm is easily parallelizable and converges globally to a stationary solution of the joint optimization problem. The proposed algorithm can also be extended to deal with per-flow quality of service constraint, or to networks with multi-antenna nodes.

Mapping and Coding Design for Channel Coded Physical-layer Network Coding

Although BICM can significantly improves the BER performance by iteration processing between the demapping and the decoding in a traditional receiver, its design and performance in PNC system has fewer studied. This paper investigates a bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) scheme in a Gaussian two-way relay channel operated with physical layer network coding (PNC). In particular, we first present an iterative demapping and decoding framework specially designed for PNC. After that, we compare different constellation mapping schemes in this framework, with the convergence analysis by using the EXIT chart. It is found that the anti-Gray mapping outperforms the Gray mapping, which is the best mapping in the traditional decoding schemes. Finally, the numerical simulation shows the better performance of our framework and verifies the mapping design.

A Novel Method for Image Integrity Authentication Based on Fixed Point Theory

Based on fixed point theory, this paper proposes a simple but efficient method for image integrity authentication, which is different from Digital Signature and Fragile Watermarking. By this method, any given image can be transformed into a fixed point of a well-chosen function, which can be constructed with periodic functions. The authentication can be realized due to the fragility of the fixed points. The experiments show that 'Fixed Point Image' performs well in security, transparence, fragility and tampering localization.

Image Integrity Authentication Scheme Based On Fixed Point Theory

Based on fixed point theory, this paper proposes a new scheme for image integrity authentication, which is different from Digital Signature and Fragile Watermarking. A realization of the new scheme is given based on Gaussian Convolution and Deconvolution (GCD) functions. For a given image, if it is invariant under a GCD function, we call it GCD fixed point image. An existence theorem of fixed points for GCD functions is proved and an iterative algorithm is presented for finding fixed points. Experiments show that GCD fixed point images perform well in transparence, fragility, security and tampering localization.

On fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations in domains with VMO coefficients

We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces $W^{1,2}_p$, $p>d+1$, of the terminal-boundary value problem for a class of fully nonlinear parabolic equations, including parabolic Bellman's equations, in bounded cylindrical domains with VMO ``coefficients''. The solvability in $W^{2}_p$, $p>d$, of the corresponding elliptic boundary-value problem is also obtained.

Photon random walk model of low-coherence enhanced backscattering (LEBS) from anisotropic disordered media: a Monte Carlo simulation

Constructive interference among coherent waves traveling time-reversed paths in a random medium gives rise to the enhancement of light scattering observed in directions close to backscattering. This phenomenon is known as enhanced backscattering (EBS). According to diffusion theory, the angular width of an EBS cone is proportional to the ratio of the wavelength of light $λ$ to the transport mean free path length ls* of a random medium. In biological media, large ls* ~ 0.5-2 mm >> $λ$ results in an extremely small (~0.001 $^\degree$) angular width of the EBS cone making the experimental observation of such narrow peaks difficult. Recently, the feasibility of observing EBS under low spatial coherence illumination (spatial coherence length Lsc<<ls*) was demonstrated. Low spatial coherence behaves as a spatial filter rejecting longer path-lengths and, thus, resulting in more than 100 times increase in the angular width of low coherence EBS (LEBS) cones. However, conventional diffusion approximation-based model of EBS has not been able to explain such dramatic increase in LEBS width. Here we present a photon random walk model of LEBS using Monte Carlo simulation to elucidate the mechanism accounting for the unprecedented broadening of LEBS peaks. Typically, the exit angles of the scattered photons are not considered in modeling EBS in diffusion regime. We show that small exit angles are highly sensitive to low order scattering, which is crucial for accurate modeling of LEBS. Our results show that the predictions of the model are in excellent agreement with experimental data.
