Meta-CoTGAN: A Meta Cooperative Training Paradigm for Improving Adversarial Text Generation

Training generative models that can generate high-quality text with sufficient diversity is an important open problem for Natural Language Generation (NLG) community. Recently, generative adversarial models have been applied extensively on text generation tasks, where the adversarially trained generators alleviate the exposure bias experienced by conventional maximum likelihood approaches and result in promising generation quality. However, due to the notorious defect of mode collapse for adversarial training, the adversarially trained generators face a quality-diversity trade-off, i.e., the generator models tend to sacrifice generation diversity severely for increasing generation quality. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which aims to improve the performance of adversarial text generation via efficiently decelerating mode collapse of the adversarial training. To this end, we introduce a cooperative training paradigm, where a language model is cooperatively trained with the generator and we utilize the language model to efficiently shape the data distribution of the generator against mode collapse. Moreover, instead of engaging the cooperative update for the generator in a principled way, we formulate a meta learning mechanism, where the cooperative update to the generator serves as a high level meta task, with an intuition of ensuring the parameters of the generator after the adversarial update would stay resistant against mode collapse. In the experiment, we demonstrate our proposed approach can efficiently slow down the pace of mode collapse for the adversarial text generators. Overall, our proposed method is able to outperform the baseline approaches with significant margins in terms of both generation quality and diversity in the testified domains.

Adversarial Attacks on GMM i-vector based Speaker Verification Systems

This work investigates the vulnerability of Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) i-vector based speaker verification systems to adversarial attacks, and the transferability of adversarial samples crafted from GMM i-vector based systems to x-vector based systems. In detail, we formulate the GMM i-vector system as a scoring function of enrollment and testing utterance pairs. Then we leverage the fast gradient sign method (FGSM) to optimize testing utterances for adversarial samples generation. These adversarial samples are used to attack both GMM i-vector and x-vector systems. We measure the system vulnerability by the degradation of equal error rate and false acceptance rate. Experiment results show that GMM i-vector systems are seriously vulnerable to adversarial attacks, and the crafted adversarial samples prove to be transferable and pose threats to neuralnetwork speaker embedding based systems (e.g. x-vector systems).

A Virtual Network Customization Framework for Multicast Services in NFV-enabled Core Networks

The paradigm of network function virtualization (NFV) with the support of software defined networking (SDN) emerges as a promising approach for customizing network services in fifth generation (5G) networks. In this paper, a multicast service orchestration framework is presented, where joint traffic routing and virtual network function (NF) placement are studied for accommodating multicast services over an NFV-enabled physical substrate network. First, we investigate a joint routing and NF placement problem for a single multicast request accommodated over a physical substrate network, with both single-path and multipath traffic routing. The joint problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem to minimize the function and link provisioning costs, under the physical network resource constraints, flow conservation constraints, and NF placement rules; Second, we develop an MILP formulation that jointly handles the static embedding of multiple service requests over the physical substrate network, where we determine the optimal combination of multiple services for embedding and their joint routing and placement configurations, such that the aggregate throughput of the physical substrate is maximized, while the function and link provisioning costs are minimized. Since the presented problem formulations are NP-hard, low complexity heuristic algorithms are proposed to find an efficient solution for both single-path and multipath routing scenarios. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed heuristic algorithms.

Deep segmental phonetic posterior-grams based discovery of non-categories in L2 English speech

Second language (L2) speech is often labeled with the native, phone categories. However, in many cases, it is difficult to decide on a categorical phone that an L2 segment belongs to. These segments are regarded as non-categories. Most existing approaches for Mispronunciation Detection and Diagnosis (MDD) are only concerned with categorical errors, i.e. a phone category is inserted, deleted or substituted by another. However, non-categorical errors are not considered. To model these non-categorical errors, this work aims at exploring non-categorical patterns to extend the categorical phone set. We apply a phonetic segment classifier to generate segmental phonetic posterior-grams (SPPGs) to represent phone segment-level information. And then we explore the non-categories by looking for the SPPGs with more than one peak. Compared with the baseline system, this approach explores more non-categorical patterns, and also perceptual experimental results show that the explored non-categories are more accurate with increased confusion degree by 7.3% and 7.5% under two different measures. Finally, we preliminarily analyze the reason behind those non-categories.

FFusionCGAN: An end-to-end fusion method for few-focus images using conditional GAN in cytopathological digital slides

Multi-focus image fusion technologies compress different focus depth images into an image in which most objects are in focus. However, although existing image fusion techniques, including traditional algorithms and deep learning-based algorithms, can generate high-quality fused images, they need multiple images with different focus depths in the same field of view. This criterion may not be met in some cases where time efficiency is required or the hardware is insufficient. The problem is especially prominent in large-size whole slide images. This paper focused on the multi-focus image fusion of cytopathological digital slide images, and proposed a novel method for generating fused images from single-focus or few-focus images based on conditional generative adversarial network (GAN). Through the adversarial learning of the generator and discriminator, the method is capable of generating fused images with clear textures and large depth of field. Combined with the characteristics of cytopathological images, this paper designs a new generator architecture combining U-Net and DenseBlock, which can effectively improve the network's receptive field and comprehensively encode image features. Meanwhile, this paper develops a semantic segmentation network that identifies the blurred regions in cytopathological images. By integrating the network into the generative model, the quality of the generated fused images is effectively improved. Our method can generate fused images from only single-focus or few-focus images, thereby avoiding the problem of collecting multiple images of different focus depths with increased time and hardware costs. Furthermore, our model is designed to learn the direct mapping of input source images to fused images without the need to manually design complex activity level measurements and fusion rules as in traditional methods.

Large and Controllable Spin-Valley Splitting in Two-Dimensional WS2/h-VN Heterostructure

Inspired by the profound physical connotations and potential application prospects of the valleytronics, we design a two-dimensional (2D) WS2/h-VN magnetic van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure and study the control of valley degree of freedom through the first-principles calculations. A considerable spin splitting of 627 meV is obtained at the K valley, accompanied with a strong suppression of that at the K' valley. An intrinsic large valley splitting of 376 meV is generated in the valence band, which corresponds to an effective Zeeman magnetic field of 2703 T. Besides of the valence band, the conduction band of WS2 possesses a remarkable spin splitting also, and valley labelled dark exciton states are present at the K' valley. The strengths of spin and valley splitting relied on the interfacial orbital hybridization are further tuned continually by the in-plane strain and interlayer spacing. Maximum spin and valley splitting of 654 and 412 meV are finally achieved, respectively, and the effective Zeeman magnetic field can be enhanced to 2989T with a -3 % strain. Time-reversal symmetry breaking and the sizable Berry curvature in the heterostructure lead to a prominent anomalous Hall conductivity at the K and K' valleys. Based on these finding, a prototype filter device for both the valley and spin is proposed.

Molecular environs and triggered star formation around the large Galactic infrared bubble N 24

A multi-wavelength analysis of the large Galactic infrared bubble N 24 is has been presented in this paper in order to investigate the molecular and star formation environment around expanding HII regions. Using archival data from Herschel and ATLASGAL, the distribution and physical properties of the dust over the entire bubble are studied. Twenty three dense clumps are identified using the Clumpfind2d algorithm with sizes and masses in the range 0.65-1.73 pc and 600-16300 Msun, respectively. To analyse the molecular environment in N 24, observations of NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) were carried out using the Nanshan 26m radio telescope. Analysis of the kinetic temperature and gravitational stability of these clumps suggests gravitational collapse in several of them. The mass-size distributions of the clumps and the presence of massive young protostars indicate that the shell of N 24 is a region of ongoing massive star formation. The compatibility of the dynamical and fragmentation time-scales and the overabundance of YSOs and clumps on the rim suggest that the collect and collapse mechanism is in play at the boundary of the bubble, but the existence of the IRDC at the edge of bubble indicates that radiation-driven implosion mechanism may also have played a role there.

Logician: A Unified End-to-End Neural Approach for Open-Domain Information Extraction

In this paper, we consider the problem of open information extraction (OIE) for extracting entity and relation level intermediate structures from sentences in open-domain. We focus on four types of valuable intermediate structures (Relation, Attribute, Description, and Concept), and propose a unified knowledge expression form, SAOKE, to express them. We publicly release a data set which contains more than forty thousand sentences and the corresponding facts in the SAOKE format labeled by crowd-sourcing. To our knowledge, this is the largest publicly available human labeled data set for open information extraction tasks. Using this labeled SAOKE data set, we train an end-to-end neural model using the sequenceto-sequence paradigm, called Logician, to transform sentences into facts. For each sentence, different to existing algorithms which generally focus on extracting each single fact without concerning other possible facts, Logician performs a global optimization over all possible involved facts, in which facts not only compete with each other to attract the attention of words, but also cooperate to share words. An experimental study on various types of open domain relation extraction tasks reveals the consistent superiority of Logician to other states-of-the-art algorithms. The experiments verify the reasonableness of SAOKE format, the valuableness of SAOKE data set, the effectiveness of the proposed Logician model, and the feasibility of the methodology to apply end-to-end learning paradigm on supervised data sets for the challenging tasks of open information extraction.

Delay-Aware Flow Migration for Embedded Services in 5G Core Networks

Service-oriented virtual network deployment is based on statistical resource demands of different services, while data traffic from each service fluctuates over time. In this paper, a delay-aware flow migration problem for embedded services is studied to meet end-to-end (E2E) delay requirement with time-varying traffic. A non-convex multi-objective mixed integer optimization problem is formulated, addressing the trade-off between maximum load balancing and minimum reconfiguration overhead due to flow migrations, under processing and transmission resource constraints and QoS requirement constraints. Since the original problem is non-solvable in optimization solvers due to unsupported types of quadratic constraints, it is transformed to a tractable mixed integer quadratically constrained programming (MIQCP) problem. The optimality gap between the two problems is proved to be zero, so we can obtain the optimum of the original problem through solving the MIQCP problem with some post-processing. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the aforementioned trade-off, as well as the benefit from flow migration in terms of E2E delay performance guarantee.

An SDN-Based Transmission Protocol with In-Path Packet Caching and Retransmission

In this paper, a comprehensive software-defined networking (SDN) based transmission protocol (SDTP) is presented for fifth generation (5G) communication networks, where an SDN controller gathers network state information from the physical network to improve data transmission efficiency between end hosts, with in-path packet retransmission. In the SDTP, we first develop a new two-way handshake mechanism for connection establishment between a pair of end host. With the aid of SDN control module, signaling exchanges for establishing E2E connections are migrated to the control plane to improve resource utilization in the data plane. A new SDTP packet header format is designed to support efficient data transmission with in-path packet caching and packet retransmission. Based on the new data packet format, a novel in-path receiver-based packet loss detection and caching-based packet retransmission scheme is proposed to achieve in-path fast recovery of lost packets. Extensive simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed protocol in terms of low connection establishment delay and low end-to-end packet transmission delay.

Segmentation of Levator Hiatus Using Multi-Scale Local Region Active contours and Boundary Shape Similarity Constraint

In this paper, a multi-scale framework with local region based active contour and boundary shape similarity constraint is proposed for the segmentation of levator hiatus in ultrasound images. In this paper, we proposed a multiscale active contour framework to segment levator hiatus ultrasound images by combining the local region information and boundary shape similarity constraint. In order to get more precisely initializations and reduce the computational cost, Gaussian pyramid method is used to decompose the image into coarse-to-fine scales. A localized region active contour model is firstly performed on the coarsest scale image to get a rough contour of the levator hiatus, then the segmentation result on the coarse scale is interpolated into the finer scale image as the initialization. The boundary shape similarity between different scales is incorporate into the local region based active contour model so that the result from coarse scale can guide the contour evolution at finer scale. By incorporating the multi-scale and boundary shape similarity, the proposed method can precisely locate the levator hiatus boundaries despite various ultrasound image artifacts. With a data set of 90 levator hiatus ultrasound images, the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are validated by quantitative and qualitative evaluations (TP, FP, Js) and comparison with other two state-of-art active contour segmentation methods (C-V model, DRLSE model).

Global optimization of expensive black-box models based on asynchronous hybrid-criterion with interval reduction

In this paper, a new sequential surrogate-based optimization (SSBO) algorithm is developed, which aims to improve the global search ability and local search efficiency for the global optimization of expensive black-box models. The proposed method involves three basic sub-criteria to infill new samples asynchronously to balance the global exploration and local exploitation. First, to capture the promising possible global optimal region, searching for the global optimum with genetic algorithm (GA) based on the current surrogate models of the objective and constraint functions. Second, to infill samples in the region with sparse samples to improve the global accuracy of the surrogate models, a grid searching with Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) with the current surrogate model is adopted to explore the sample space. Third, to accelerate the local searching efficiency, searching for a local optimum with sequential quadratic programming (SQP) based on the local surrogate models in the reduced interval, which involves some samples near the current optimum. When the new sample is too close to the existing ones, the new sample should be abandoned, due to the poor additional information. According to the three sub-criteria, the new samples are placed in the regions which have not been fully explored and includes the possible global optimum point. When a possible global optimum point is found, the local searching sub-criterion captures the local optimum around it rapidly. Numerical and engineering examples are used to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. The statistical results show that the proposed method has good global searching ability and efficiency.

Downlink Interference Management in Dense Interference-Aware Drone Small Cells Networks Using Mean-Field Game Theory

The use of drone small cells (DSCs) has recently drawn significant attentions as one key enabler for providing air-to-ground communication services in various situations. This paper investigates the co-channel deployment of dense DSCs, which are mounted on captive unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). As the altitude of a DSC has a huge impact on the performance of downlink, the downlink interference control problem is mapped to an altitude control problem in this paper. All DSCs adjust their altitude to improve the available signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). The control problem is modeled as a mean-field game (MFG), where the cost function is designed to combine the available SINR with the cost of altitude controling. The interference introduced from a big amount of DSCs is derived through a mean-field approximation approach. Within the proposed MFG framework, the related Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman and Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equations are deduced to describe and explain the control policy. The optimal altitude control policy is obtained by solving the partial differential equations with a proposed finite difference algorithm based on the upwind scheme. The simulations illustrate the optimal power controls and corresponding mean field distribution of DSCs. The numerical results also validate that the proposed control policy achieves better SINR performance of DSCs compared to the uniform control scheme.

Topological Skeletonization and Tree-Summarization of Neurons Using Discrete Morse Theory

Neuroscientific data analysis has classically involved methods for statistical signal and image processing, drawing on linear algebra and stochastic process theory. However, digitized neuroanatomical data sets containing labelled neurons, either individually or in groups labelled by tracer injections, do not fully fit into this classical framework. The tree-like shapes of neurons cannot mathematically be adequately described as points in a vector space. There is therefore a need for new approaches. Methods from computational topology and geometry are naturally suited to the analysis of neuronal shapes. Here we introduce methods from Discrete Morse Theory to extract tree-skeletons of individual neurons from volumetric brain image data, or to summarize collections of neurons labelled by localized anterograde tracer injections. Since individual neurons are topologically trees, it is sensible to summarize the collection of neurons labelled by a localized anterograde tracer injection using a consensus tree-shape. The algorithmic procedure includes an initial pre-processing step to extract a density field from the raw volumetric image data, followed by initial skeleton extraction from the density field using a discrete version of a 1-(un)stable manifold of the density field. Heuristically, if the density field is regarded as a mountainous landscape, then the 1-(un)stable manifold follows the "mountain ridges" connecting the maxima of the density field. We then simplify this skeleton-graph into a tree using a shortest-path approach and methods derived from persistent homology. The advantage of this approach is that it uses global information about the density field and is therefore robust to local fluctuations and non-uniformly distributed input signals. To be able to handle large data sets, we use a divide-and-conquer approach. The resulting software DiMorSC is available on Github.

A Hybrid Approach for Efficient Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Green C-RAN

In this paper, we consider a green cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with simultaneous wireless and power transfer ability. In order to reduce the energy consumed for updating the chanel state information (CSI), energy users are divided into two different groups, including the free charge group and the MIMO group. Then a semi-definite programming problem is formulated under the constraints of energy and information transmission requirements. To minimize the total energy consumption, two algorithms are developed to authorize the energy users into two group divisions in single time slot. Then the algorithms are extended to long term scenarios consisting training and long term stages, the CSI of free charge energy users are not required during the long term stage. Simulation and numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms in significantly reducing the energy consumption of C-RAN systems.

On Low-Resolution ADCs in Practical 5G Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems

Nowadays, millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is a favorable candidate for the fifth generation (5G) cellular systems. However, a key challenge is the high power consumption imposed by its numerous radio frequency (RF) chains, which may be mitigated by opting for low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), whilst tolerating a moderate performance loss. In this article, we discuss several important issues based on the most recent research on mmWave massive MIMO systems relying on low-resolution ADCs. We discuss the key transceiver design challenges including channel estimation, signal detector, channel information feedback and transmit precoding. Furthermore, we introduce a mixed-ADC architecture as an alternative technique of improving the overall system performance. Finally, the associated challenges and potential implementations of the practical 5G mmWave massive MIMO system {with ADC quantizers} are discussed.

New Results on the Fluctuating Two-Ray Model with Arbitrary Fading Parameters and Its Applications

The fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model provides a much better fit than other fading models for small-scale fading measurements in millimeter wave communications. In this paper, using a mixture of gamma distributions, new exact analytical expressions for the probability density and cumulative distribution functions of the FTR distribution with arbitrary fading parameters are presented. Moreover, the performance of digital communication systems over the FTR fading channel is evaluated in terms of the channel capacity and the bit error rate. The interaction between channel fading parameters and system performance is further investigated. Our newly derived results extend and complement previous knowledge of the FTR fading model.

Spectral and Energy Efficiency of Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems with Hardware Impairments

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), with a large number of distributed access points (APs) that jointly serve the user equipments (UEs), is a promising network architecture for future wireless communications. To reduce the cost and power consumption of such systems, it is important to utilize low-quality transceiver hardware at the APs. However, the impact of hardware impairments on cell-free massive MIMO has thus far not been studied. In this paper, we take a first look at this important topic by utilizing well-established models of hardware distortion and deriving new closed-form expressions for the spectral and energy efficiency. These expressions provide important insights into the practical impact of hardware impairments and also how to efficiently deploy cell-free systems. Furthermore, a novel hardware-quality scaling law is presented. It proves that the impact of hardware impairments at the APs vanish as the number of APs grows. Numerical results validate that cell-free massive MIMO systems are inherently resilient to hardware impairments.
