Advanced Knife-Edge free Self-Aligned Colour Schlieren Imaging with Extended Measuring Range

Schlieren imaging is a powerful, non-intrusive method widely used to visualize refractive index gradients in fluid dynamics and heat transfer studies, essential in fields like aerospace engineering, combustion analysis, and supersonic flow visualization. Traditional Schlieren imaging setups employ a knife-edge cut-off to differentiate between deviated and non-deviated light rays, creating contrast. However, this approach requires highly precise alignment and limits both usability and measurement range, restricting accurate observation of high-gradient phenomena such as combustion processes at elevated temperatures. Here, we proposed a simplified Schlieren imaging method that eliminates the knife edge by introducing a novel integration of an extended RGB segmented colour source with a circular aperture. Our approach significantly simplifies alignment, enables colour visualization, and we achieve expanded measuring range by approximately threefold. Experimental validation, involving imaging hot air plumes generated from butane combustion and transparent adhesive tape tests, demonstrate significant improved performance, including enhanced visibility near regions of high temperature gradients, improved edge detection, and precise visualization of large refractive gradients. This simplified yet robust Schlieren imaging approach substantially broadens the scope and ease of application, facilitating detailed investigations of previously challenging fluid phenomena.

Point Tracking in Surgery--The 2024 Surgical Tattoos in Infrared (STIR) Challenge

Understanding tissue motion in surgery is crucial to enable applications in downstream tasks such as segmentation, 3D reconstruction, virtual tissue landmarking, autonomous probe-based scanning, and subtask autonomy. Labeled data are essential to enabling algorithms in these downstream tasks since they allow us to quantify and train algorithms. This paper introduces a point tracking challenge to address this, wherein participants can submit their algorithms for quantification. The submitted algorithms are evaluated using a dataset named surgical tattoos in infrared (STIR), with the challenge aptly named the STIR Challenge 2024. The STIR Challenge 2024 comprises two quantitative components: accuracy and efficiency. The accuracy component tests the accuracy of algorithms on in vivo and ex vivo sequences. The efficiency component tests the latency of algorithm inference. The challenge was conducted as a part of MICCAI EndoVis 2024. In this challenge, we had 8 total teams, with 4 teams submitting before and 4 submitting after challenge day. This paper details the STIR Challenge 2024, which serves to move the field towards more accurate and efficient algorithms for spatial understanding in surgery. In this paper we summarize the design, submissions, and results from the challenge. The challenge dataset is available here: https://zenodo.org/records/14803158 , and the code for baseline models and metric calculation is available here: https://github.com/athaddius/STIRMetrics

3D Acetabular Surface Reconstruction from 2D Pre-operative X-ray Images using SRVF Elastic Registration and Deformation Graph

Accurate and reliable selection of the appropriate acetabular cup size is crucial for restoring joint biomechanics in total hip arthroplasty (THA). This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates square-root velocity function (SRVF)-based elastic shape registration technique with an embedded deformation (ED) graph approach to reconstruct the 3D articular surface of the acetabulum by fusing multiple views of 2D pre-operative pelvic X-ray images and a hemispherical surface model. The SRVF-based elastic registration establishes 2D-3D correspondences between the parametric hemispherical model and X-ray images, and the ED framework incorporates the SRVF-derived correspondences as constraints to optimize the 3D acetabular surface reconstruction using nonlinear least-squares optimization. Validations using both simulation and real patient datasets are performed to demonstrate the robustness and the potential clinical value of the proposed algorithm. The reconstruction result can assist surgeons in selecting the correct acetabular cup on the first attempt in primary THA, minimising the need for revision surgery.

EndoLRMGS: Complete Endoscopic Scene Reconstruction combining Large Reconstruction Modelling and Gaussian Splatting

Complete reconstruction of surgical scenes is crucial for robot-assisted surgery (RAS). Deep depth estimation is promising but existing works struggle with depth discontinuities, resulting in noisy predictions at object boundaries and do not achieve complete reconstruction omitting occluded surfaces. To address these issues we propose EndoLRMGS, that combines Large Reconstruction Modelling (LRM) and Gaussian Splatting (GS), for complete surgical scene reconstruction. GS reconstructs deformable tissues and LRM generates 3D models for surgical tools while position and scale are subsequently optimized by introducing orthogonal perspective joint projection optimization (OPjPO) to enhance accuracy. In experiments on four surgical videos from three public datasets, our method improves the Intersection-over-union (IoU) of tool 3D models in 2D projections by>40%. Additionally, EndoLRMGS improves the PSNR of the tools projection from 3.82% to 11.07%. Tissue rendering quality also improves, with PSNR increasing from 0.46% to 49.87%, and SSIM from 1.53% to 29.21% across all test videos.

Text-Driven Diffusion Model for Sign Language Production

We introduce the hfut-lmc team's solution to the SLRTP Sign Production Challenge. The challenge aims to generate semantically aligned sign language pose sequences from text inputs. To this end, we propose a Text-driven Diffusion Model (TDM) framework. During the training phase, TDM utilizes an encoder to encode text sequences and incorporates them into the diffusion model as conditional input to generate sign pose sequences. To guarantee the high quality and accuracy of the generated pose sequences, we utilize two key loss functions. The joint loss function L_{joint} is used to precisely measure and minimize the differences between the joint positions of the generated pose sequences and those of the ground truth. Similarly, the bone orientation loss function L_{bone} is instrumental in ensuring that the orientation of the bones in the generated poses aligns with the actual, correct orientations. In the inference stage, the TDM framework takes on a different yet equally important task. It starts with noisy sequences and, under the strict constraints of the text conditions, gradually refines and generates semantically consistent sign language pose sequences. Our carefully designed framework performs well on the sign language production task, and our solution achieves a BLEU-1 score of 20.17, placing second in the challenge.

Goal-oriented Feature Extraction: a novel approach for enhancing data-driven surrogate model

Surrogate model can replace the parametric full-order model (FOM) by an approximation model, which can significantly improve the efficiency of optimization design and reduce the complexity of engineering systems. However, due to limitations in efficiency and accuracy, the applications of high-dimensional surrogate models are still challenging. In the present study, we propose a method for extracting hidden features to simplify high-dimensional problems, thereby improving the accuracy and robustness of surrogate models. We establish a goal-oriented feature extraction (GFE) neural network through indirect supervised learning. We constrained the distance between hidden features based on the differences in the target output. This means that in the hidden feature space, cases that are closer in distance output approximately the same, and vice versa. The proposed hidden feature learning method can significantly reduce the dimensionality and nonlinearity of the surrogate model, thereby improving modeling accuracy and generalization capability. To demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed ideas, We conducted numerical experiments on three popular surrogate models. The modeling results of typical high-dimensional mathematical cases and aerodynamic performance cases of ONERA M6 wings show that goal-oriented feature extraction significantly improves the modeling accuracy. Goal-oriented feature extraction can effectively reduce the error distribution of predicting cases and reduce the convergence and robustness differences caused by various data-driven surrogate models.

Nuclear Excitation and Control Induced by Intense Vortex Laser

The existing intense laser-based approaches for nuclear excitation offer ultrafast temporal resolution and high efficiency compared to traditional accelerator probes. However, controlling nuclear properties such as spin and magnetic moment remains an unprecedented challenge. Here, we put forward a novel method for nuclear excitation and control induced by intense vortex lasers. We develop a theory incorporating the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of vortex laser within the nuclear hyperfine mixing framework. We find that intense vortex laser can effectively excite hydrogen-like thorium-229 nucleus and induce three-dimensional rotation of the nuclear magnetic moment. This rotation arises from the localized electromagnetic field and new transition channels excited by the vortex laser, and can be reconstructed through radiation spectrum analysis. Moreover, the OAM of vortex laser enables the chaotic system to exhibit topologically protected periodic patterns in nuclear excitation and radiation, facilitating precise experimental measurements. Our findings underscore the potential of vortex laser for high-precision nuclear control and imaging, deepening our understanding of nuclear properties and hyperfine structure, and advancing quantum information and nuclear technologies.

Ecosystem Evolution and Drivers across the Tibetan Plateau and Surrounding Regions

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) and surrounding regions, vital to global energy and water cycles, are profoundly influenced by climate change and anthropogenic activities. Despite widespread attention to vegetation greening across the region since the 1980s, its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study employs the eigen microstates method to quantify vegetation greening dynamics using long-term remote sensing and reanalysis data. We identify two dominant modes that collectively explain more than 61% of the vegetation dynamics. The strong seasonal heterogeneity in the southern TP, primarily driven by radiation and agricultural activities, is reflected in the first mode, which accounts for 46.34% of the variance. The second mode, which explains 15% of the variance, is closely linked to deep soil moisture (SM3, 28 cm to 1 m). Compared to precipitation and surface soil moisture (SM1 and SM2, 0 to 28 cm), our results show that deep soil moisture exerts a stronger and more immediate influence on vegetation growth, with a one-month response time. This study provides a complexity theory-based framework to quantify vegetation dynamics and underscores the critical influence of deep soil moisture on greening patterns in the TP.

Search for Double Beta Decay of $^{136}$Xe to the $0^+_1$ Excited State of $^{136}$Ba with PandaX-4T

We perform a search of double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe to the excited state, $0^+_1$, of $^{136}$Ba (2$νββ$-0$_1^+$), using the dual-phase xenon detector of PandaX-4T with the first 94.9-day commissioning data. The multi-site events are reconstructed up to the MeV energy scale, which helps to improve the background model significantly. The background contribution from the stainless steel platform outside PandaX-4T cryostat is evaluated for the first time. No significant evidence for 2$νββ$-$0_1^+$ is observed, resulting in a lower limit on half-life of $7.5 \times 10^{22}$ yr at the 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit on such a rare decay in a natural xenon-based detector.

Search for MeV-Scale Axionlike Particles and Dark Photons with PandaX-4T

Axionlike particles (ALPs) and dark photons (DPs) are viable dark matter particle candidates. We have searched for possible ALP/DP signals in the PandaX-4T liquid xenon detector using 440 kg$\cdot$yr of data. A binned likelihood fit is constructed to search for possible mono-energetic peaks induced by the absorption processes between ALPs/DPs and atomic electrons of xenon. A detailed temporal model of decays associated with xenon isotopes is introduced to constrain the number of background events. No signal excess over background expectations is observed, and we have established the most stringent exclusion limits for most ALP/DP masses across the range of 150 keV/$c^2$ to 1 MeV/$c^2$. The improvement is particularly significant within the mass range of \text{150-400}~keV/$c^2$, with the average factor of 3.5 compared to previous results.

Scaling Function Learning: A sparse aerodynamic data reconstruction method for generalizing aircraft shapes

Accurate and complete aerodynamic data sets are the basis for comprehensive and accurate evaluation of the overall performance of aircraft. However, the sampling cost of full-state aerodynamic data is extremely high, and there are often differences between wind tunnel conditions and actual flight conditions. Conventional scaling parameter extraction methods can solve the problem of aerodynamic state extrapolation, but hard to achieve data migration and shape generalization. In order to realize the low-cost construction of a full-state nonlinear aerodynamic database, this research proposes the Scaling Function Learning (SFL) method. In SFL method, symbolic regression is used to mine the composite function expression of aerodynamic force coefficient for a relatively complete aerodynamic data set of typical aircraft. The inner layer of the function represents a scaling function. The SFL method was validated on the HB-2 by extracting scaling parameters for axial force coefficients and generalizing the scaling function by releasing its constants. The effectiveness and accuracy of the scaling function are verified using different hypersonic aircraft configurations, such as HBS, double ellipsoid, sharp cone, and double cone missile. The results show that the extracted scaling function has the ability to generalize across states and configurations. With only 3-4 state samples, the aerodynamic database construction of variable Mach number, angle of attack and Reynolds number can be realized, which shows great state extrapolation ability with a relative error of about 1-5%. This research also lays a methodological foundation for parameter space dimensionality reduction and small sample modeling of other complex high-dimensional engineering problems.

Interleaved Block-based Learned Image Compression with Feature Enhancement and Quantization Error Compensation

In recent years, learned image compression (LIC) methods have achieved significant performance improvements. However, obtaining a more compact latent representation and reducing the impact of quantization errors remain key challenges in the field of LIC. To address these challenges, we propose a feature extraction module, a feature refinement module, and a feature enhancement module. Our feature extraction module shuffles the pixels in the image, splits the resulting image into sub-images, and extracts coarse features from the sub-images. Our feature refinement module stacks the coarse features and uses an attention refinement block composed of concatenated three-dimensional convolution residual blocks to learn more compact latent features by exploiting correlations across channels, within sub-images (intra-sub-image correlations), and across sub-images (inter-sub-image correlations). Our feature enhancement module reduces information loss in the decoded features following quantization. We also propose a quantization error compensation module that mitigates the quantization mismatch between training and testing. Our four modules can be readily integrated into state-of-the-art LIC methods. Experiments show that combining our modules with Tiny-LIC outperforms existing LIC methods and image compression standards in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and multi-scale structural similarity (MS-SSIM) on the Kodak dataset and the CLIC dataset.

DOEI: Dual Optimization of Embedding Information for Attention-Enhanced Class Activation Maps

Weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) typically utilizes limited semantic annotations to obtain initial Class Activation Maps (CAMs). However, due to the inadequate coupling between class activation responses and semantic information in high-dimensional space, the CAM is prone to object co-occurrence or under-activation, resulting in inferior recognition accuracy. To tackle this issue, we propose DOEI, Dual Optimization of Embedding Information, a novel approach that reconstructs embedding representations through semantic-aware attention weight matrices to optimize the expression capability of embedding information. Specifically, DOEI amplifies tokens with high confidence and suppresses those with low confidence during the class-to-patch interaction. This alignment of activation responses with semantic information strengthens the propagation and decoupling of target features, enabling the generated embeddings to more accurately represent target features in high-level semantic space. In addition, we propose a hybrid-feature alignment module in DOEI that combines RGB values, embedding-guided features, and self-attention weights to increase the reliability of candidate tokens. Comprehensive experiments show that DOEI is an effective plug-and-play module that empowers state-of-the-art visual transformer-based WSSS models to significantly improve the quality of CAMs and segmentation performance on popular benchmarks, including PASCAL VOC (+3.6%, +1.5%, +1.2% mIoU) and MS COCO (+1.2%, +1.6% mIoU). Code will be available at https://github.com/AIGeeksGroup/DOEI.

Position reconstruction and surface background model for the PandaX-4T detector

We report the position reconstruction methods and surface background model for the PandaX-4T dark matter direct search experiment. This work develops two position reconstruction algorithms: template matching (TM) method and photon acceptance function (PAF) method. Both methods determine the horizontal position of events based on the light pattern of secondary scintillation collected by the light sensors. After a comprehensive evaluation of resolution, uniformity, and robustness, the PAF method was selected for position reconstruction, while the TM method was employed for verification. The PAF method achieves a bulk event resolution of 1.0 mm and a surface event resolution of 4.4 mm for a typical $S2$ signal with a bottom charge of 1500 PE (about 14 keV). The uniformity is around 20\%. Robustness studies reveal average deviations of 5.1 mm and 8.8 mm for the commissioning run (Run0) and the first science run (Run1), respectively, due to the deactivation of certain PMTs. A data-driven surface background model is developed based on the PAF method. The surface background is estimated to be $0.09 \pm 0.06$ events for Run0 (0.54 tonne$\cdot$year) and $0.17 \pm 0.11$ events for Run1 (1.00 tonne$\cdot$year).

Fast Omni-Directional Image Super-Resolution: Adapting the Implicit Image Function with Pixel and Semantic-Wise Spherical Geometric Priors

In the context of Omni-Directional Image (ODI) Super-Resolution (SR), the unique challenge arises from the non-uniform oversampling characteristics caused by EquiRectangular Projection (ERP). Considerable efforts in designing complex spherical convolutions or polyhedron reprojection offer significant performance improvements but at the expense of cumbersome processing procedures and slower inference speeds. Under these circumstances, this paper proposes a new ODI-SR model characterized by its capacity to perform Fast and Arbitrary-scale ODI-SR processes, denoted as FAOR. The key innovation lies in adapting the implicit image function from the planar image domain to the ERP image domain by incorporating spherical geometric priors at both the latent representation and image reconstruction stages, in a low-overhead manner. Specifically, at the latent representation stage, we adopt a pair of pixel-wise and semantic-wise sphere-to-planar distortion maps to perform affine transformations on the latent representation, thereby incorporating it with spherical properties. Moreover, during the image reconstruction stage, we introduce a geodesic-based resampling strategy, aligning the implicit image function with spherical geometrics without introducing additional parameters. As a result, the proposed FAOR outperforms the state-of-the-art ODI-SR models with a much faster inference speed. Extensive experimental results and ablation studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of our design.

Dark Matter Search Results from 1.54 Tonne$\cdot$Year Exposure of PandaX-4T

In this letter, we report the dark matter search results from the commissioning run and the first science run of the PandaX-4T experiment. A blind analysis is carried out on the entire data set. The data processing is improved compared to previous work, unifying the low-level signal reconstruction in a wide energy range up to 120 keV. With a total exposure of 1.54 tonne$\cdot$year, no significant excess of nuclear recoil events is found. The lowest 90% confidence level exclusion on the spin-independent cross section is $1.6 \times 10^{-47}\,\mathrm{cm}^2$ at a dark matter mass of 40 GeV$/c^2$. Our results represent the most stringent constraint for a dark matter mass above 100 GeV$/c^2$.
