SOM-Net: Unrolling the Subspace-based Optimization for Solving Full-wave Inverse Scattering Problems

In this paper, an unrolling algorithm of the iterative subspace-based optimization method (SOM) is proposed for solving full-wave inverse scattering problems (ISPs). The unrolling network, named SOM-Net, inherently embeds the Lippmann- Schwinger physical model into the design of network structures. The SOM-Net takes the deterministic induced current and the raw permittivity image obtained from back-propagation (BP) as the input. It then updates the induced current and the permittivity successively in sub-network blocks of the SOM- Net by imitating iterations of the SOM. The final output of the SOM-Net is the full predicted induced current, from which the scattered field and the permittivity image can also be deduced analytically. The parameters of the SOM-Net are optimized in a supervised manner with the total loss to simultaneously ensure the consistency of the induced current, the scattered field, and the permittivity in the governing equations. Numerical tests on both synthetic and experimental data verify the superior performance of the proposed SOM-Net over typical ones. The results on challenging examples like scatterers with tough profiles or high permittivity demonstrate the good generalization ability of the SOM-Net. With the use of deep unrolling technology, this work builds a bridge between traditional iterative methods and deep learning methods for solving ISPs.

High fidelity generation of complex optical field through scattering medium with iterative wavefront optimization

Light scattering within scattering media presents a substantial obstacle to optical transmission. A speckle pattern with random amplitude and phase distribution is observed when coherent light travels through strong scattering media. Fortunately, wavefront shaping has been successfully employed with a spatial light modulator to recover intensity targets after scattering media, such as a sharp focus point or specified two-dimensional patterns. There have, however, been few studies that attempted to separately manipulate the amplitude and phase of the focusing field. In this paper, we propose a feedback-based wavefront shaping method to generate complex optical fields through scattering medium. A reliable phase retrieval approach is introduced to provide the complex feedback information, i.e., the amplitude and phase of the focusing field. Accordingly, in order to modulate the speckle field into a desired complex structured optical field, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is used to find the best phase map. To demonstrate the proposed method's high performance, experimental tests have been carried out. High fidelity is demonstrated in the generation of diverse complex light fields, both in amplitude and phase. Our findings may facilitate the manipulation of light field through scattering medium, and are anticipated to further promote future applications such as optogenetics, vortex optical communication, and optical trapping through scattering media.

A Double-Graph Based Framework for Frame Semantic Parsing

Frame semantic parsing is a fundamental NLP task, which consists of three subtasks: frame identification, argument identification and role classification. Most previous studies tend to neglect relations between different subtasks and arguments and pay little attention to ontological frame knowledge defined in FrameNet. In this paper, we propose a Knowledge-guided Incremental semantic parser with Double-graph (KID). We first introduce Frame Knowledge Graph (FKG), a heterogeneous graph containing both frames and FEs (Frame Elements) built on the frame knowledge so that we can derive knowledge-enhanced representations for frames and FEs. Besides, we propose Frame Semantic Graph (FSG) to represent frame semantic structures extracted from the text with graph structures. In this way, we can transform frame semantic parsing into an incremental graph construction problem to strengthen interactions between subtasks and relations between arguments. Our experiments show that KID outperforms the previous state-of-the-art method by up to 1.7 F1-score on two FrameNet datasets. Our code is availavle at https://github.com/PKUnlp-icler/KID.

A Fast Alternating Minimization Algorithm for Coded Aperture Snapshot Spectral Imaging Based on Sparsity and Deep Image Priors

Coded aperture snapshot spectral imaging (CASSI) is a technique used to reconstruct three-dimensional hyperspectral images (HSIs) from one or several two-dimensional projection measurements. However, fewer projection measurements or more spectral channels leads to a severly ill-posed problem, in which case regularization methods have to be applied. In order to significantly improve the accuracy of reconstruction, this paper proposes a fast alternating minimization algorithm based on the sparsity and deep image priors (Fama-SDIP) of natural images. By integrating deep image prior (DIP) into the principle of compressive sensing (CS) reconstruction, the proposed algorithm can achieve state-of-the-art results without any training dataset. Extensive experiments show that Fama-SDIP method significantly outperforms prevailing leading methods on simulation and real HSI datasets.

Deep Probabilistic Time Series Forecasting using Augmented Recurrent Input for Dynamic Systems

The demand of probabilistic time series forecasting has been recently raised in various dynamic system scenarios, for example, system identification and prognostic and health management of machines. To this end, we combine the advances in both deep generative models and state space model (SSM) to come up with a novel, data-driven deep probabilistic sequence model. Specifically, we follow the popular encoder-decoder generative structure to build the recurrent neural networks (RNN) assisted variational sequence model on an augmented recurrent input space, which could induce rich stochastic sequence dependency. Besides, in order to alleviate the inconsistency issue of the posterior between training and predicting as well as improving the mining of dynamic patterns, we (i) propose using a lagged hybrid output as input for the posterior at next time step, which brings training and predicting into alignment; and (ii) further devise a generalized auto-regressive strategy that encodes all the historical dependencies for the posterior. Thereafter, we first investigate the methodological characteristics of the proposed deep probabilistic sequence model on toy cases, and then comprehensively demonstrate the superiority of our model against existing deep probabilistic SSM models through extensive numerical experiments on eight system identification benchmarks from various dynamic systems. Finally, we apply our sequence model to a real-world centrifugal compressor forecasting problem, and again verify its outstanding performance by quantifying the time series predictive distribution.

A New Correction to the Rytov Approximation for Strongly Scattering Lossy Media

We propose a correction to the conventional Rytov approximation (RA) and investigate its performance for predicting wave scattering under strong scattering conditions. An important motivation for the correction and investigation is to help in the development of better models for inverse scattering. The correction is based upon incorporating the high frequency theory of inhomogeneous wave propagation for lossy media into the RA formulation. We denote the technique as the extended Rytov approximation for lossy media (xRA-LM). xRA-LM significantly improves upon existing non-iterative linear scattering approximations such as RA and the Born approximation (BA) by providing a validity range for the permittivity of the objects of up to 50 times greater than RA. We demonstrate the technique by providing results for predicting wave scattering from piece-wise homogeneous scatterers in a two-dimensional (2D) region. Numerical investigation of the performance of xRA-LM for solving direct problem show that xRA-LM can accurately predict wave scattering by electrically large, low-loss scatterers with high complex permittivity ($ε_r> 50+5j$). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first non-iterative, linear approximate wave scattering model which has a large validity range in terms of both permittivity and electrical size.

A Stochastic Binary Vertex-Triggering Resetting Algorithm for Global Synchronization of Pulse-Coupled Oscillators

In this paper, we propose a novel stochastic binary resetting algorithm for networks of pulse-coupled oscillators (or, simply, agents) to reach global synchronization. The algorithm is simple to state: Every agent in a network oscillates at a common frequency. Upon completing an oscillation, an agent generates a Bernoulli random variable to decide whether it sends pulses to all of its out-neighbors or it stays quiet. Upon receiving a pulse, an agent resets its state by following a binary phase update rule. We show that such an algorithm can guarantee global synchronization of the agents almost surely as long as the underlying information flow topology is a rooted directed graph. The proof of the result relies on the use of a stochastic hybrid dynamical system approach. Toward the end of the paper, we present numerical demonstrations for the validity of the result and, also, numerical studies about the times needed to reach synchronization for various information flow topologies.

The H-property of Line Graphons

We explore in this paper sufficient conditions for the $H$-property to hold, with a particular focus on the so-called line graphons. A graphon is a symmetric, measurable function from the unit square $[0,1]^2$ to the closed interval $[0,1]$. Graphons can be used to sample random graphs, and a graphon is said to have the $H$-property if graphs on $n$ nodes sampled from it admit a node-cover by disjoint cycles -- such a cover is called a Hamiltonian decomposition -- almost surely as $n \to \infty$. A step-graphon is a graphon which is piecewise constant over rectangles in the domain. To a step-graphon, we assign two objects: its concentration vector, encoding the areas of the rectangles, and its skeleton-graph, describing their supports. These two objects were used in our earlier work [3] to establish necessary conditions for a step-graphon to have the $H$-property. In this paper, we prove that these conditions are essentially also sufficient for the class of line-graphons, i.e., the step-graphons whose skeleton graphs are line graphs with a self-loop at an ending node. We also investigate borderline cases where neither the necessary nor the sufficient conditions are met.

On the H-property for step-graphons and edge polytopes

Graphons $W$ can be used as stochastic models to sample graphs $G_n$ on $n$ nodes for $n$ arbitrarily large. A graphon $W$ is said to have the $H$-property if $G_n$ admits a decomposition into disjoint cycles with probability one as $n$ goes to infinity. Such a decomposition is known as a Hamiltonian decomposition. In this paper, we provide necessary conditions for the $H$-property to hold. The proof builds upon a hereby established connection between the so-called edge polytope of a finite undirected graph associated with $W$ and the $H$-property. Building on its properties, we provide a purely geometric solution to a random graph problem. More precisely, we assign two natural objects to $W$, which we term concentration vector and skeleton graph, denoted by $x^*$ and $S$ respectively. We then establish two necessary conditions for the $H$-property to hold: (1) the edge-polytope of $S$, denoted by $\mathcal{X}(S)$, is of full rank, and (2) $x^* \in \mathcal{X}(S)$.

Gossip over Holonomic Graphs

A gossip process is an iterative process in a multi-agent system where only two neighboring agents communicate at each iteration and update their states. The neighboring condition is by convention described by an undirected graph. In this paper, we consider a general update rule whereby each agent takes an arbitrary weighted average of its and its neighbor's current states. In general, the limit of the gossip process (if it converges) depends on the order of iterations of the gossiping pairs. The main contribution of the paper is to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for convergence of the gossip process that is independent of the order of iterations. This result relies on the introduction of the novel notion of holonomy of local stochastic matrices for the communication graph. We also provide complete characterizations of the limit and the space of holonomic stochastic matrices over the graph.

Accurate Indoor Radio Frequency Imaging using a New Extended Rytov Approximation for Lossy Media

Imaging objects with high relative permittivity and large electrical size remains a challenging problem in the field of inverse scattering. In this work we present a phaseless inverse scattering method that can accurately image and reconstruct objects even with these attributes. The reconstruction accuracy obtained under these conditions has not been achieved previously and can therefore open up the area to technologically important applications such as indoor Radio Frequency (RF) and microwave imaging. The novelty of the approach is that it utilizes a high frequency approximation for waves passing through lossy media to provide corrections to the conventional Rytov approximation (RA). We refer to this technique as the Extended Phaseless Rytov Approximation for Low Loss Media (xPRA-LM). Simulation as well as experimental results are provided for indoor RF imaging using phaseless measurements from 2.4 GHz based WiFi nodes. We demonstrate that the approach provides accurate reconstruction of an object up to relative permittivities of $15+j1.5$ for object sizes greater than $20 λ$ ($λ$ is wavelength inside object). Even at higher relative permittivities of up to $ε_r=77+j 7$, object shape reconstruction remains accurate, however the reconstruction amplitude is less accurate. These results have not been obtained before and can be utilized to achieve the potential of RF and microwave imaging in applications such as indoor RF imaging.

On Structural Rank and Resilience of Sparsity Patterns

A sparsity pattern in $\mathbb{R}^{n \times m}$, for $m\geq n$, is a vector subspace of matrices admitting a basis consisting of canonical basis vectors in $\mathbb{R}^{n \times m}$. We represent a sparsity pattern by a matrix with $0/\star$-entries, where $\star$-entries are arbitrary real numbers and $0$-entries are equal to $0$. We say that a sparsity pattern has full structural rank if the maximal rank of matrices contained in it is $n$. In this paper, we investigate the degree of resilience of patterns with full structural rank: We address questions such as how many $\star$-entries can be removed without decreasing the structural rank and, reciprocally, how many $\star$-entries one needs to add so as to increase the said degree of resilience to reach a target. Our approach goes by translating these questions into max-flow problems on appropriately defined bipartite graphs. Based on these translations, we provide algorithms that solve the problems in polynomial time.

Sparse Linear Ensemble Systems and Structural Controllability

The paper introduces and solves a structural controllability problem for continuum ensembles of linear time-invariant systems. All the individual linear systems of an ensemble are sparse, governed by the same sparsity pattern. Controllability of an ensemble system is, by convention, the capability of using a common control input to simultaneously steer every individual systems in it. A sparsity pattern is structurally controllable if it admits a controllable linear ensemble system. A main contribution of the paper is to provide a graphical condition that is necessary and sufficient for a sparsity pattern to be structurally controllable. Like other structural problems, the property of being structural controllable is monotone. We provide a complete characterization of minimal sparsity patterns as well.

Structural averaged controllability of linear ensemble systems

In the paper, we introduce and address the problem of structural averaged controllability for linear ensemble systems. We provide examples highlighting the differences between this problem and others. In particular, we show that structural averaged controllability is strictly weaker than structural controllability for single (or ensembles of) linear systems. We establish a set of necessary or sufficient conditions for sparsity patterns to be structurally averaged controllable.

Reputation and Pricing Dynamics in Online Markets

We study the economic interactions among sellers and buyers in online markets. In such markets, buyers have limited information about the product quality, but can observe the sellers' reputations which depend on their past transaction histories and ratings from past buyers. Sellers compete in the same market through pricing, while considering the impact of their heterogeneous reputations. We consider sellers with limited as well as unlimited capacities, which correspond to different practical market scenarios. In the unlimited seller capacity scenario, buyers prefer the seller with the highest reputation-price ratio. If the gap between the highest and second highest seller reputation levels is large enough, then the highest reputation seller dominates the market as a monopoly. If sellers' reputation levels are relatively close to each other, then those sellers with relatively high reputations will survive at the equilibrium, while the remaining relatively low reputation sellers will get zero market share. In the limited seller capacity scenario, we further consider two different cases. If each seller can only serve one buyer, then it is possible for sellers to set their monopoly prices at the equilibrium while all sellers gain positive market shares; if each seller can serve multiple buyers, then it is possible for sellers to set maximum prices at the equilibrium. Simulation results show that the dynamics of reputations and prices in the longer-term interactions will converge to stable states, and the initial buyer ratings of the sellers play the critical role in determining sellers' reputations and prices at the stable state.

A Dataset and Benchmark Towards Multi-Modal Face Anti-Spoofing Under Surveillance Scenarios

Face Anti-spoofing (FAS) is a challenging problem due to complex serving scenarios and diverse face presentation attack patterns. Especially when captured images are low-resolution, blurry, and coming from different domains, the performance of FAS will degrade significantly. The existing multi-modal FAS datasets rarely pay attention to the cross-domain problems under deployment scenarios, which is not conducive to the study of model performance. To solve these problems, we explore the fine-grained differences between multi-modal cameras and construct a cross-domain multi-modal FAS dataset under surveillance scenarios called GREAT-FASD-S. Besides, we propose an Attention based Face Anti-spoofing network with Feature Augment (AFA) to solve the FAS towards low-quality face images. It consists of the depthwise separable attention module (DAM) and the multi-modal based feature augment module (MFAM). Our model can achieve state-of-the-art performance on the CASIA-SURF dataset and our proposed GREAT-FASD-S dataset.
