Multi-Granularity Vision Fastformer with Fusion Mechanism for Skin Lesion Segmentation

Background:Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN) and Vision Transformers(ViT) are the main techniques used in Medical image segmentation. However, CNN is limited to local contextual information, and ViT's quadratic complexity results in significant computational costs. At the same time, equipping the model to distinguish lesion boundaries with varying degrees of severity is also a challenge encountered in skin lesion segmentation. Purpose:This research aims to optimize the balance between computational costs and long-range dependency modelling and achieve excellent generalization across lesions with different degrees of severity. Methods:we propose a lightweight U-shape network that utilizes Vision Fastformer with Fusion Mechanism (VFFM-UNet). We inherit the advantages of Fastformer's additive attention mechanism, combining element-wise product and matrix product for comprehensive feature extraction and channel reduction to save computational costs. In order to accurately identify the lesion boundaries with varying degrees of severity, we designed Fusion Mechanism including Multi-Granularity Fusion and Channel Fusion, which can process the feature maps in the granularity and channel levels to obtain different contextual information. Results:Comprehensive experiments on the ISIC2017, ISIC2018 and PH2 datasets demonstrate that VFFM-UNet outperforms existing state-of-the-art models regarding parameter numbers, computational complexity and segmentation performance. In short, compared to MISSFormer, our model achieves superior segmentation performance while reducing parameter and computation costs by 101x and 15x, respectively. Conclusions:Both quantitative and qualitative analyses show that VFFM-UNet sets a new benchmark by reaching an ideal balance between parameter numbers, computational complexity, and segmentation performance compared to existing state-of-the-art models.

Fast reversal of Néel vectors in antiferromagnets via domain-wall motion driven by vertically injected spin currents

In this work, we investigate the steady propagation of 180-degree domain walls (180DWs) of Néel vectors in thin antiferromagnetic strips under perpendicularly injected spin currents with various polarization orientations. Our results show that only spin currents polarized normally to the strip plane guarantee a quick and steady rigid flow of 180DWs, thus realize a fast reversal of Néel vectors in antiferromagnets (AFMs). Different from the common ``current-in-plane'' geometry which is feasible only for metallic AFMs, our ``current-out-of-plane'' layout under investigation can further apply to insulating AFMs (which are more common in real applications) via quantum tunneling effect. Results from this work paves the way for fine control of Néel vectors in (both metallic and insulating) AFM strips and further development of novel magnetic nanodevices based on them.

Nonlinear dynamics of oscillons and transients during preheating after single field inflation

In the single-field model, the preheating process occurs through self-resonance of inflaton field. We study the nonlinear structures generated during preheating in the $α$-attractor models and monodromy models. The potentials have a power law form $\propto\left|ϕ\right|^{2n}$ near the origin and a flat region away from bottom, which are consistent with current cosmological observations. The Floquet analysis shows that potential parameters in monodromy model have a significant influence on the region of resonance bands. Besides we investigate the formation of nonlinear structures, the equation of state and the energy transfer through the (3+1) dimensional lattice simulation. We find that all the models exhibit similar nonlinear dynamics. Furthermore, our analysis reveals that the behavior of the inflation model at small field values, which is governed by the parameter $n$, exerts a more substantial influence on the nonlinear dynamics. The behavior at large field values, controlled by the parameter $q$, has a negligible impact.

Symbolic Neural Ordinary Differential Equations

Differential equations are widely used to describe complex dynamical systems with evolving parameters in nature and engineering. Effectively learning a family of maps from the parameter function to the system dynamics is of great significance. In this study, we propose a novel learning framework of symbolic continuous-depth neural networks, termed Symbolic Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (SNODEs), to effectively and accurately learn the underlying dynamics of complex systems. Specifically, our learning framework comprises three stages: initially, pre-training a predefined symbolic neural network via a gradient flow matching strategy; subsequently, fine-tuning this network using Neural ODEs; and finally, constructing a general neural network to capture residuals. In this process, we apply the SNODEs framework to partial differential equation systems through Fourier analysis, achieving resolution-invariant modeling. Moreover, this framework integrates the strengths of symbolism and connectionism, boasting a universal approximation theorem while significantly enhancing interpretability and extrapolation capabilities relative to state-of-the-art baseline methods. We demonstrate this through experiments on several representative complex systems. Therefore, our framework can be further applied to a wide range of scientific problems, such as system bifurcation and control, reconstruction and forecasting, as well as the discovery of new equations.

Measurement Uncertainty in Infrared Spectroscopy with Entangled Photon Pairs

Spectroscopy with entanglement has shown great potential to break limitations of traditional spectroscopic measurements, yet the role of entanglement in spectroscopic multi-parameter joint measurement, particularly in the infrared optical range, remains elusive. Here, we find an uncertain relation that constrains the precision of infrared spectroscopic multi-parameter measurements using entangled photon pairs. Under such a relation, we demonstrate a trade-off between the measurement precisions of the refractive index and absorption coefficient of the medium in the infrared range, and also illustrate how to balance their respective estimation errors. Our work shall provide guidance towards the future experimental designs and applications in entanglement-assisted spectroscopy.

Investigation of Sub-configurations Reveals Stable Spin-Orbit Torque Switching Polarity in Polycrystalline Mn3Sn

Previous studies have demonstrated the switching of octupole moment in Mn3Sn driven by spin-orbit torque (SOT). However, they have not accounted for the polycrystalline nature of the sample when explaining the switching mechanism. In this work, we use samples with various atomic orientations to capture this polycrystalline nature. We thoroughly investigate their SOT-induced spin dynamics and demonstrate that the polycrystalline structure leads to distinct outcomes. Our findings reveal that configuration II, where the Kagome plane is perpendicular to the spin polarization, exhibits robust switching with stable polarity, whereas the signals from various sub-configurations in configuration I cancel each other out. By comparing our findings with experimental results, we pinpoint the primary sources contributing to the measured AHE signals. Additionally, we establish a dynamic balance model that incorporates the unique properties of Mn3Sn to elucidate these observations. Our study highlights the essential role of the polycrystalline nature in understanding SOT switching. By clarifying the underlying physical mechanisms, our work resolves the longstanding puzzle regarding the robust SOT switching observed in Mn3Sn.

Large language models streamline automated systematic review: A preliminary study

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise in natural language processing tasks, with the potential to automate systematic reviews. This study evaluates the performance of three state-of-the-art LLMs in conducting systematic review tasks. We assessed GPT-4, Claude-3, and Mistral 8x7B across four systematic review tasks: study design formulation, search strategy development, literature screening, and data extraction. Sourced from a previously published systematic review, we provided reference standard including standard PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) design, standard eligibility criteria, and data from 20 reference literature. Three investigators evaluated the quality of study design and eligibility criteria using 5-point Liker Scale in terms of accuracy, integrity, relevance, consistency and overall performance. For other tasks, the output is defined as accurate if it is the same as the reference standard. Search strategy performance was evaluated through accuracy and retrieval efficacy. Screening accuracy was assessed for both abstracts screening and full texts screening. Data extraction accuracy was evaluated across 1,120 data points comprising 3,360 individual fields. Claude-3 demonstrated superior overall performance in PICO design. In search strategy formulation, GPT-4 and Claude-3 achieved comparable accuracy, outperforming Mistral. For abstract screening, GPT-4 achieved the highest accuracy, followed by Mistral and Claude-3. In data extraction, GPT-4 significantly outperformed other models. LLMs demonstrate potential for automating systematic review tasks, with GPT-4 showing superior performance in search strategy formulation, literature screening and data extraction. These capabilities make them promising assistive tools for researchers and warrant further development and validation in this field.

Atomic-scale observation of $d$-$π$-$d$ spin coupling in coordination structures

Spin coupling between magnetic metal atoms and organic radicals plays a pivotal role in high-performance magnetic materials. The complex interaction involving multi-spin centers in bulk materials makes it challenging to study spin coupling at the atomic scale. Here, we investigate the $d$-$π$-$d$ spin interaction in well-defined metal-organic coordinated structures composed of two iron (Fe) atoms and four all-trans retinoic acid (ReA) molecules, using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The ReA molecule is turned into a spin-$1/2$ radical state by dehydrogenation, facilitating strong magnetic coupling with the coordinated Fe atoms. Comprehensive theoretical analysis, based on density functional theory and valence bond theory, further elucidates the intrinsic mechanism of ferrimagnetic spin coupling in the coordination structure. Specifically, simultaneous antiferromagnetic coupling of Fe dimer to ReA radicals parallelizes the dimer spin orientation. This work contributes to the fundamental understanding of spin interaction in metal-organic coordination structures and provides microscopic insights for designing advanced magnetic materials.

Multilingual Knowledge Editing with Language-Agnostic Factual Neurons

Multilingual knowledge editing (MKE) aims to simultaneously update factual knowledge across multiple languages within large language models (LLMs). Previous research indicates that the same knowledge across different languages within LLMs exhibits a degree of shareability. However, most existing MKE methods overlook the connections of the same knowledge between different languages, resulting in knowledge conflicts and limited edit performance. To address this issue, we first investigate how LLMs process multilingual factual knowledge and discover that the same factual knowledge in different languages generally activates a shared set of neurons, which we call language-agnostic factual neurons (LAFNs). These neurons represent the same factual knowledge shared across languages and imply the semantic connections among multilingual knowledge. Inspired by this finding, we propose a new MKE method by Locating and Updating Language-Agnostic Factual Neurons (LU-LAFNs) to edit multilingual knowledge simultaneously, which avoids knowledge conflicts and thus improves edit performance. Experimental results on Bi-ZsRE and MzsRE benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves the best edit performance, indicating the effectiveness and importance of modeling the semantic connections among multilingual knowledge.

Reevaluating $H_0$ Tension with Non-Planck CMB and DESI BAO Joint Analysis

$H_0$ tension in the spatially flat $Λ$CDM model is reevaluated by employing three sets of non-Planck CMB data, namely WMAP, WMAP+ACT, and WMAP+SPT, in conjunction with DESI BAO data and non-DESI BAO datasets including 6dFGS, SDSS DR7, and SDSS DR16. Our analysis yields $H_0 = 68.86\pm 0.68~\mathrm{km\ s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$ with WMAP+DESI BAO, $H_0 = 68.72\pm 0.51~\mathrm{km\ s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$ with WMAP+ACT+DESI BAO, and $H_0 = 68.62\pm 0.52~\mathrm{km\ s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$ with WMAP+SPT+DESI BAO. The results of non-Planck CMB+DESI BAO exhibit a $3.4σ$, $3.7σ$, and $3.8σ$ tension with the SH0ES local measurement respectively which are around $1 σ$ lower in significance for the Hubble tension compared to Planck CMB+DESI BAO. Moreover, by combining DESI BAO data+non-Planck CMB measurements, we obtain a more stringent constraint on the Hubble constant compared to non-DESI BAO data+non-Planck CMB data, as well as reducing the significance of the Hubble tension.

Anomalous switching pattern in the ferrimagnetic memory cell

Replacing the ferromagnet with ferrimagnet (FiM) in the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) allows faster magnetization switching in picoseconds. The operation of a memory cell that consists of the MTJ and a transistor requires reversable magnetization switching. When a constant voltage is applied, we find that the spin-transfer torque can only switch the FiM-MTJ from parallel to antiparallel state. This stems from the small switching window of FiM and the dynamic resistance variation during the magnetization switching. We find the resulting current variation can be suppressed by reducing the magnetoresistance ratio. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the switching window can be expanded by adjusting the amount of Gd in FiM. We predict that the polarity of both switching current (Jc,switch) and oscillation current (Jc,osc) reverses at the angular momentum compensation point but not the magnetization compensation point. This anomalous dynamic behavior is attributed to the different physical nature of magnetization switching and oscillation in FiM, which must be considered when designing FiM-based MRAM.

Dual-Space Knowledge Distillation for Large Language Models

Knowledge distillation (KD) is known as a promising solution to compress large language models (LLMs) via transferring their knowledge to smaller models. During this process, white-box KD methods usually minimize the distance between the output distributions of the two models so that more knowledge can be transferred. However, in the current white-box KD framework, the output distributions are from the respective output spaces of the two models, using their own prediction heads. We argue that the space discrepancy will lead to low similarity between the teacher model and the student model on both representation and distribution levels. Furthermore, this discrepancy also hinders the KD process between models with different vocabularies, which is common for current LLMs. To address these issues, we propose a dual-space knowledge distillation (DSKD) framework that unifies the output spaces of the two models for KD. On the basis of DSKD, we further develop a cross-model attention mechanism, which can automatically align the representations of the two models with different vocabularies. Thus, our framework is not only compatible with various distance functions for KD (e.g., KL divergence) like the current framework, but also supports KD between any two LLMs regardless of their vocabularies. Experiments on task-agnostic instruction-following benchmarks show that DSKD significantly outperforms the current white-box KD framework with various distance functions, and also surpasses existing KD methods for LLMs with different vocabularies.

Spin-Orbit Torque Driven Chiral Domain Wall Motion in Mn3Sn

Noncollinear chiral antiferromagnets, such as Mn3X (X = Sn, Ge), have garnered significant interest in spintronics due to their topologically protected Weyl nodes and large momentum-space Berry curvatures. In this study, we report rapid chirality domain-wall (CDW) motion in Mn3Sn, driven by spin-orbit torque at over 545.3 m.s^-1 a remarkably low current density of 9 10^10 A.m^-2. The results demonstrate that the chirality of the domain wall and the direction of the current collectively determine the displacement direction of the CDW. Theoretically, we provide ananalysis of the effective field experienced by the octupole moment, uncovering the underlying motion mechanism based on the unique profile of the chiral spin structure. Notably, CDWs with opposite chirality can form within the same Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction sample, and the Neel-like CDW type is dictated by the orientation of the kagome plane rather than the negligible magnetostatic energy associated with the small magnetization (approximately 3.957 10^-3). Additionally, the CDW, with a considerable width of 770 nm, is segmented into three 60 portions due to the six-fold anisotropy in Mn3Sn. These emphasize that CDW motion in Mn3Sn cannot be quantitatively studied using ferromagnetic frameworks. We also demonstrate that a small external field can effectively regulate CDW velocity. Our comprehensive results and theoretical analysis provide crucial guidelines for integrating antiferromagnet CDWs into functional spintronic devices.

Temperature shift of magnetic-field-dependent photoluminescence features of nitrogen-vacancy ensembles in diamond

Recently significant attention has been paid to magnetic-field-dependent photoluminescence (PL) features of the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. These features are used for microwave-free sensing and are indicative of the spin-bath properties in the diamond sample. Examinating the temperature dependence of the PL features allows to identify both temperature dependent and independent features, and to utilize them in diamond-based quantum sensing and dynamic nuclear polarization applications. Here, we study the thermal variability of many different features visible in a wide range of magnetic fields. To this end, we first discuss the origin of the features and tentatively assign the previously unidentified features to cross relaxation of NV center containing multi-spin systems. The experimental results are compared with theoretically predicted temperature shifts deduced from a combination of thermal expansion and electron-phonon interactions. A deeper insight into the thermal behavior of a wide array of the features may come with important consequences for various applications in high-precision NV thermometry, gyroscopes, solid-state clocks, and biomagnetic measurements.

Rethinking Early-Fusion Strategies for Improved Multispectral Object Detection

Most recent multispectral object detectors employ a two-branch structure to extract features from RGB and thermal images. While the two-branch structure achieves better performance than a single-branch structure, it overlooks inference efficiency. This conflict is increasingly aggressive, as recent works solely pursue higher performance rather than both performance and efficiency. In this paper, we address this issue by improving the performance of efficient single-branch structures. We revisit the reasons causing the performance gap between these structures. For the first time, we reveal the information interference problem in the naive early-fusion strategy adopted by previous single-branch structures. Besides, we find that the domain gap between multispectral images, and weak feature representation of the single-branch structure are also key obstacles for performance. Focusing on these three problems, we propose corresponding solutions, including a novel shape-priority early-fusion strategy, a weakly supervised learning method, and a core knowledge distillation technique. Experiments demonstrate that single-branch networks equipped with these three contributions achieve significant performance enhancements while retaining high efficiency. Our code will be available at \url{https://github.com/XueZ-phd/Efficient-RGB-T-Early-Fusion-Detection}.

Constraints on Redshift-Binned Dark Energy using DESI BAO Data

We parameterize the equation of state of late-time dark energy as $w_{\mathrm{bin}}(z)$, with three redshift bins, characterized by a constant equation of state in each bin. Then, we constrain the parameters of the $w_{\mathrm{bin}}$CDM model using datasets from DESI BAO data, Planck CMB power spectrum, ACT DR6 lensing power spectrum, and type Ia supernova distance-redshift data of Pantheon Plus/DES Y5/Union3. The significances for $w_1>-1$ is $1.9σ$, $2.6σ$ and $3.3σ$, and $w_2$ is consistent with $-1$ within $1σ$ level, while $1.6σ$, $1.5σ$ and $1.5σ$ for $w_3<-1$ in these three data combinations with different choices of type Ia supernova datasets, respectively. Additionally, to alleviate $H_0$ tension, we incorporate the early dark energy (EDE) model in the early-time universe and add the SH0ES absolute magnitude $M_b$ prior (or $H_0$ prior) to further constrain the $w_{\mathrm{bin}}$EDE model. In the $w_{\mathrm{bin}}$EDE model, we find a $w_{\mathrm{bin}}(z)$ pattern similar to that in the $w_{\mathrm{bin}}$CDM model. The results of the three data combinations exhibit $w_1>-1$ at $1.9σ$, $1.7σ$ and $2.9σ$ level, meanwhile $w_3<-1$ at $1.3σ$, $1.3σ$ and $1.3σ$ level, respectively. In all, our results indicate that the transition of dark energy from phantom at high redshifts to quintessence at low redshifts is not conclusive.

TFDet: Target-Aware Fusion for RGB-T Pedestrian Detection

Pedestrian detection plays a critical role in computer vision as it contributes to ensuring traffic safety. Existing methods that rely solely on RGB images suffer from performance degradation under low-light conditions due to the lack of useful information. To address this issue, recent multispectral detection approaches have combined thermal images to provide complementary information and have obtained enhanced performances. Nevertheless, few approaches focus on the negative effects of false positives caused by noisy fused feature maps. Different from them, we comprehensively analyze the impacts of false positives on the detection performance and find that enhancing feature contrast can significantly reduce these false positives. In this paper, we propose a novel target-aware fusion strategy for multispectral pedestrian detection, named TFDet. TFDet achieves state-of-the-art performance on two multispectral pedestrian benchmarks, KAIST and LLVIP. TFDet can easily extend to multi-class object detection scenarios. It outperforms the previous best approaches on two multispectral object detection benchmarks, FLIR and M3FD. Importantly, TFDet has comparable inference efficiency to the previous approaches, and has remarkably good detection performance even under low-light conditions, which is a significant advancement for ensuring road safety.

Revisiting the Analytical Solution of Spin-Orbit Torque Switched Nanoscale Perpendicular Ferromagnet

The scaling of magnetic memory into nanometer size calls for a theoretical model to accurately predict the switching current. Previous models show large discrepancy with experiments in studying the spin-orbit torque switching of perpendicular magnet. In this work, we find that the trajectory of magnetization shows a smooth transition during the switching. This contradicts the key assumption in previous models that magnetization needs to align to the spin polarization (σ) before the switching occurs. We demonstrate that aligning magnetization to σrequires a very large current, resulting in the unsatisfactory fitting between the previous models and experiments. In contrast, the smooth transition permits a lower switching current that is comparable to experiments. Guided by this refined physical picture, we pinpoint the reversal of precession chirality as a pivotal factor for achieving deterministic switching. This insight leads to the formulation of a new analytical model that demonstrates remarkable agreement with experimental data. Our work resolves an important issue confronting the experiment and theory. We provide a clear physical picture of the current-induced magnetization switching, which is invaluable in the development of spin-orbit torque magnetic random-access memory.
