Anomalous impact of thermal fluctuations on spintransfer torque induced ferrimagnetic switching

The dynamics of a spin torque driven ferrimagnetic (FiM) system is investigated using the two-sublattice macrospin model. We demonstrate an ultrafast switching in the picosecond range. However, we find that the excessive current leads to the magnetic oscillation. Therefore, faster switching cannot be achieved by unlimitedly increasing the current. By systematically studying the impact of thermal fluctuations, we find the dynamics of FiMs can also be distinguished into the precessional region, the thermally activated region, and the cross-over region. However, in the precessional region, there is a significant deviation between FiM and ferromagnet (FM), i.e., the FM is insensitive to thermal fluctuations since its switching is only determined by the amount of net charge. In contrast, we find that the thermal effect is pronounced even a very short current pulse is applied to the FiM. We attribute this anomalous effect to the complex relation between the anisotropy and overdrive current. By controlling the magnetic anisotropy, we demonstrate that the FiM can also be configured to be insensitive to thermal fluctuations. This controllable thermal property makes the FiM promising in many emerging applications such as the implementation of tunable activation functions in the neuromorphic computing.

Field-free spin-orbit torque switching of an antiferromagnet with perpendicular Néel vector

The field-free spin-orbit torque induced 180° reorientation of perpendicular magnetization is beneficial for the high performance magnetic memory. The antiferromagnetic material (AFM) can provide higher operation speed than the ferromagnetic counterpart. In this paper, we propose a trilayer AFM/Insulator/Heavy Metal structure as the AFM memory device. We show that the field-free switching of the AFM with perpendicular Néel vector can be achieved by using two orthogonal currents, which provide the uniform damping-like torque and stagger field-like torque, respectively. The reversible switching can be obtained by reversing either current. A current density of 1.79 10^11A/m^2 is sufficient to induce the switching. In addition, the two magnetic moments become noncollinear during the switching. This enables an ultrafast switching within 40 picoseconds. The device and switching mechanism proposed in this work offer a promising approach to deterministically switch the AFM with perpendicular Néel vector. It can also stimulate the development of ultrafast AFM-based MRAM.

Power-law distribution and scale-invariant structure from the first CHIME/FRB Fast Radio Burst catalog

We study the statistical property of fast radio bursts (FRBs) based on a selected sample of 190 one-off FRBs in the first CHIME/FRB catalog. Three power law models are used in the analysis, and we find the cumulative distribution functions of energy can be well fitted by bent power law and thresholded power law models. And the distribution functions of fluctuations of energy well follow the Tsallis $q$-Gaussian distribution. The $q$ values in the Tsallis $q$-Gaussian distribution are constant with small fluctuations for different temporal scale intervals, indicating a scale-invariant structure of the bursts. The earthquakes and soft gamma repeaters show similar properties, which are consistent with the predictions of self-organized criticality systems.

Search for ultralight dark matter with spectroscopy of radio-frequency atomic transitions

The effects of scalar and pseudoscalar ultralight bosonic dark matter (UBDM) were searched for by comparing the frequency of a quartz oscillator to that of a hyperfine-structure transition in $^{87}$Rb, and an electronic transition in $^{164}$Dy. We constrain linear interactions between a scalar UBDM field and Standard-Model (SM) fields for an underlying UBDM particle mass in the range $1\times10^{-17}-8.3\times10^{-13} $ eV and quadratic interactions between a pseudoscalar UBDM field and SM fields in the range $5\times10^{-18}- 4.1\times10^{-13} $ eV. Within regions of the respective ranges, our constraints on linear interactions significantly improve on results from previous, direct searches for oscillations in atomic parameters, while constraints on quadratic interactions surpass limits imposed by such direct searches as well as by astrophysical observations.

Periodic multivariate formal power series

A system of multivariate formal power series $φ$ with a homogeneous decomposition $φ=\sum_{k=0}^\inftyφ_k$ is invertible under composition if $φ_0=0$ and $\mathrm{det}(φ_1)\ne 0.$ All invertible series over a field $K$ form a formal transformation group $G_\infty(n,K).$ We prove that every periodic series $φ\in G_\infty(n,K)$ with $φ_1$ diagonalizable is conjugate to $φ_1.$ This classifies all periodic series in $G_\infty(n,\mathbb{C}).$ A constraint for a periodic series is obtained when its first term is a multiple of identity.

Spatially Nonuniform Oscillations in Ferrimagnets Based on an Atomistic Model

The ferrimagnets, such as GdxFeCo(1-x), can produce ultrafast magnetic switching and oscillation due to the strong exchange field. The two-sublattices macrospin model has been widely used to explain the experimental results. However, it fails in describing the spatial nonuniform magnetic dynamics which gives rises to many important phenomenons such as the domain walls and skyrmions. Here we develop the two-dimensional atomistic model and provide a torque analysis method to study the ferrimagnetic oscillation. Under the spin-transfer torque, the magnetization oscillates in the exchange mode or the flipped exchange mode. When the Gd composition is increased, the exchange mode firstly disappears, and then appears again as the magnetization compensation point is reached. We show that these results can only be explained by analyzing the spatial distribution of magnetization and effective fields. In particular, when the sample is small, a spatial nonuniform oscillation is also observed in the square film. Our work reveals the importance of spatial magnetic distributions in understanding the ferrimagnetic dynamics. The method developed in this paper provides an important tool to gain a deeper understanding of ferrimagnets and antiferromagnets. The observed ultrafast dynamics can also stimulate the development of THz oscillators.

Graph-Based Depth Denoising & Dequantization for Point Cloud Enhancement

A 3D point cloud is typically constructed from depth measurements acquired by sensors at one or more viewpoints. The measurements suffer from both quantization and noise corruption. To improve quality, previous works denoise a point cloud \textit{a posteriori} after projecting the imperfect depth data onto 3D space. Instead, we enhance depth measurements directly on the sensed images \textit{a priori}, before synthesizing a 3D point cloud. By enhancing near the physical sensing process, we tailor our optimization to our depth formation model before subsequent processing steps that obscure measurement errors. Specifically, we model depth formation as a combined process of signal-dependent noise addition and non-uniform log-based quantization. The designed model is validated (with parameters fitted) using collected empirical data from a representative depth sensor. To enhance each pixel row in a depth image, we first encode intra-view similarities between available row pixels as edge weights via feature graph learning. We next establish inter-view similarities with another rectified depth image via viewpoint mapping and sparse linear interpolation. This leads to a maximum a posteriori (MAP) graph filtering objective that is convex and differentiable. We minimize the objective efficiently using accelerated gradient descent (AGD), where the optimal step size is approximated via Gershgorin circle theorem (GCT). Experiments show that our method significantly outperformed recent point cloud denoising schemes and state-of-the-art image denoising schemes in two established point cloud quality metrics.

FocusNet: Classifying Better by Focusing on Confusing Classes

Nowadays, most classification networks use one-hot encoding to represent categorical data because of its simplicity. However, one-hot encoding may affect the generalization ability as it neglects inter-class correlations. We observe that, even when a neural network trained with one-hot labels produces incorrect predictions, it still pays attention to the target image region and reveals which classes confuse the network. Inspired by this observation, we propose a confusion-focusing mechanism to address the class-confusion issue. Our confusion-focusing mechanism is implemented by a two-branch network architecture. Its baseline branch generates confusing classes, and its FocusNet branch, whose architecture is flexible, discriminates correct labels from these confusing classes. We also introduce a novel focus-picking loss function to improve classification accuracy by encouraging FocusNet to focus on the most confusing classes. The experimental results validate that our FocusNet is effective for image classification on common datasets, and that our focus-picking loss function can also benefit the current neural networks in improving their classification accuracy.

Low latency communication over commercially available LTE and remote driving

In addition to autonomous car operation, in many cases it is desirable to let a human drive the vehicle remotely. To make remote operation possible, it is very critical to have a low and predictable latency to transmit video from the car cameras and receive control commands back. In this paper, we analyze the problem and present a communication and video streaming system that addresses the latency challenges and enables teleoperation of a real car over commercially available LTE network; demonstrating sub-50ms roundtrip latencies for 720p, 60FPS video, with average PSNR 36db.

Nonperturbative approach to the nonlinear photon echo of V-type system

The analysis of nonlinear spectroscopy, widely used to study the dynamics and structures of condensed-phase matter, typically employs a perturbative approach noticing the weak interaction between the laser and the matter of interest. However, such perturbative approach is no longer applicable once the interaction between the laser and the matter is strong. We adapt the method of quantum dynamical evolution into the calculation of signal and present the response formalism of the nonlinear spectroscopy in a nonperturbative approach. In this new approach, we demonstrate that in addition to the third-order term in the perturbative method, the higher-order terms have essential contributions to the nonlinear signal of the two-pulse and three-pulse photon echo (2PPE and 3PPE). The detailed calculations are demonstrated with the example of a three-level V-type system, which is widely used in the studies of quantum optics. We consider the effect of the environment via a pure dephasing mechanism with both the localized modes of each molecule and the shared modes between molecules.

Observation of biradical spin coupling through hydrogen bonds

Investigation of intermolecular electron spin interaction is of fundamental importance in both science and technology. Here, radical pairs of all-trans retinoic acid molecules on Au(111) are created using an ultra-low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Antiferromagnetic coupling between two radicals is identified by magnetic-field dependent spectroscopy. The measured exchange energies are from 0.1 to 1.0 meV. The biradical spin coupling is mediated through O-H$\cdots$O hydrogen bonds, as elucidated from analysis combining density functional theory calculation and a modern version of valence bond theory.

Generating Authentic Adversarial Examples beyond Meaning-preserving with Doubly Round-trip Translation

Generating adversarial examples for Neural Machine Translation (NMT) with single Round-Trip Translation (RTT) has achieved promising results by releasing the meaning-preserving restriction. However, a potential pitfall for this approach is that we cannot decide whether the generated examples are adversarial to the target NMT model or the auxiliary backward one, as the reconstruction error through the RTT can be related to either. To remedy this problem, we propose a new criterion for NMT adversarial examples based on the Doubly Round-Trip Translation (DRTT). Specifically, apart from the source-target-source RTT, we also consider the target-source-target one, which is utilized to pick out the authentic adversarial examples for the target NMT model. Additionally, to enhance the robustness of the NMT model, we introduce the masked language models to construct bilingual adversarial pairs based on DRTT, which are used to train the NMT model directly. Extensive experiments on both the clean and noisy test sets (including the artificial and natural noise) show that our approach substantially improves the robustness of NMT models.

Geometry of gauged LG-model with compatible boundary conditions

This paper introduces the geometry of the open string Floer theory of gauged Landau-Ginzburg model via gauged Witten equations. Given a $G$-invariant Morse-Bott holomorphic function $W$ on a Hamiltonian space $(M,ω,G),$ Lefschetz thimbles are constructed from proper Lagrangian submanifolds of critical set of $W.$ We study an energy functional on path space whose gradient flow equation corresponds to the gauged Witten equations with temporal gauge on a strip end, and whose critical points are Lagrangian intersections in the reduced critical space of $W.$

Fast Computation of Generalized Eigenvectors for Manifold Graph Embedding

Our goal is to efficiently compute low-dimensional latent coordinates for nodes in an input graph -- known as graph embedding -- for subsequent data processing such as clustering. Focusing on finite graphs that are interpreted as uniform samples on continuous manifolds (called manifold graphs), we leverage existing fast extreme eigenvector computation algorithms for speedy execution. We first pose a generalized eigenvalue problem for sparse matrix pair $(\A,\B)$, where $\A = Ł- μ\Q + ε\I$ is a sum of graph Laplacian $Ł$ and disconnected two-hop difference matrix $\Q$. Eigenvector $\v$ minimizing Rayleigh quotient $\frac{\v^{\top} \A \v}{\v^{\top} \v}$ thus minimizes $1$-hop neighbor distances while maximizing distances between disconnected $2$-hop neighbors, preserving graph structure. Matrix $\B = \text{diag}(\{\b_i\})$ that defines eigenvector orthogonality is then chosen so that boundary / interior nodes in the sampling domain have the same generalized degrees. $K$-dimensional latent vectors for the $N$ graph nodes are the first $K$ generalized eigenvectors for $(\A,\B)$, computed in $\cO(N)$ using LOBPCG, where $K \ll N$. Experiments show that our embedding is among the fastest in the literature, while producing the best clustering performance for manifold graphs.

Efficient frequency conversion with geometric phase control in optical metasurfaces

Metasurfaces have appeared as a versatile platform for miniaturized functional nonlinear optics due to their design freedom in tailoring wavefronts. The key factor that limits its application in functional devices is the low conversion efficiency. Recently, dielectric metasurfaces governed by either high-quality factor modes (quasi-bound states in the continuum) or Mie modes, enabling strong light-matter interaction, have become a prolific route to achieve high nonlinear efficiency. Here, we demonstrate both numerically and experimentally an effective way of spatial nonlinear phase control by using the Pancharatnam-Berry phase principle with a high third harmonic conversion efficiency of $10^{-4}$ $1/W^2$. We find that the magnetic Mie resonance appears to be the main contributor to the third harmonic response, while the contribution from the quasi-bound states in the continuum is negligible. This is confirmed by a phenomenological model based on coupled anharmonic oscillators. Besides, our metasurface provides experimentally a high diffraction efficiency (80-90%) in both polarization channels. We show a functional application of our approach by experimentally reconstructing an encoded polarization-multiplexed vortex beam array with different topological charges at the third harmonic frequency with high fidelity. Our approach has the potential viability for future on-chip nonlinear signal processing and wavefront control.

Improved bounds on ultralight scalar dark matter in the radio-frequency range

We present a search for fundamental constant oscillations in the range $20$~kHz-$100$ MHz, that may arise within models for ultralight dark matter (UDM). Using two independent, significantly upgraded optical-spectroscopy apparatus, we achieve up to $\times$1000 greater sensitivity in the search relative to previous work. We report no observation of UDM and thus constrain respective couplings to electrons and photons within the investigated UDM particle mass range $8\cdot 10^{-11}-4\cdot 10^{-7}$ eV. The constraints significantly exceed previously set bounds, and as we show, may surpass in future experiments those provided by equivalence-principle experiments in a specific case regarding the combination of UDM couplings probed by the latter.

Dolbeault-type complexes on $G_2$- and $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds

There are three types of Dolbeault complexes arising from representations of holonomy group on a Riemannian manifold, two of which are dual to each other. Such a complex is elliptic if and only if its generator satisfies an algebraic condition. As applications, we give all Dolbeault complexes on a compact Riemannian manifold with exceptional holonomy. Each cohomology can be described by harmonic forms.

The BINGO Project I: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations

Observations of the redshifted 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen (HI) are a new and powerful window of observation that offers us the possibility to map the spatial distribution of cosmic HI and learn about cosmology. BINGO (Baryon Acoustic Oscillations [BAO] from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations) is a new unique radio telescope designed to be one of the first to probe BAO at radio frequencies. BINGO has two science goals: cosmology and astrophysics. Cosmology is the main science goal and the driver for BINGO's design and strategy. The key of BINGO is to detect the low redshift BAO to put strong constraints in the dark sector models. Given the versatility of the BINGO telescope, a secondary goal is astrophysics, where BINGO can help discover and study Fast Radio Bursts (FRB) and other transients, Galactic and extragalactic science. In this paper, we introduce the latest progress of the BINGO project, its science goals, describing the scientific potential of the project in each science and the new developments obtained by the collaboration. We introduce the BINGO project and its science goals and give a general summary of recent developments in construction, science potential and pipeline development obtained by the BINGO collaboration in the past few years. We show that BINGO will be able to obtain competitive constraints for the dark sector, and also that will allow for the discovery of several FRBs in the southern hemisphere. The capacity of BINGO in obtaining information from 21-cm is also tested in the pipeline introduced here. There is still no measurement of the BAO in radio, and studying cosmology in this new window of observations is one of the most promising advances in the field. The BINGO project is a radio telescope that has the goal to be one of the first to perform this measurement and it is currently being built in the northeast of Brazil. (Abridged)
