Variable metric extrapolation proximal iterative hard thresholding method for $\ell_0$ minimization problem

In this paper, we consider the $\ell_0$ minimization problem whose objective function is the sum of $\ell_0$-norm and convex differentiable function. A variable metric type method which combines the PIHT method and the skill in quasi-newton method, named variable metric extrapolation proximal iterative hard thresholding (VMEPIHT) method, is proposed. Then we analyze its convergence, linear convergence rate and superlinear convergence rate under appropriate assumptions. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments on compressive sensing problem and CT image reconstruction problem to confirm VMPIHT method's efficiency, compared with other state-of-art methods.

Fast & Robust Image Interpolation using Gradient Graph Laplacian Regularizer

In the graph signal processing (GSP) literature, it has been shown that signal-dependent graph Laplacian regularizer (GLR) can efficiently promote piecewise constant (PWC) signal reconstruction for various image restoration tasks. However, for planar image patches, like total variation (TV), GLR may suffer from the well-known "staircase" effect. To remedy this problem, we generalize GLR to gradient graph Laplacian regularizer (GGLR) that provably promotes piecewise planar (PWP) signal reconstruction for the image interpolation problem -- a 2D grid with random missing pixels that requires completion. Specifically, we first construct two higher-order gradient graphs to connect local horizontal and vertical gradients. Each local gradient is estimated using structure tensor, which is robust using known pixels in a small neighborhood, mitigating the problem of larger noise variance when computing gradient of gradients. Moreover, unlike total generalized variation (TGV), GGLR retains the quadratic form of GLR, leading to an unconstrained quadratic programming (QP) problem per iteration that can be solved quickly using conjugate gradient (CG). We derive the means-square-error minimizing weight parameter for GGLR, trading off bias and variance of the signal estimate. Experiments show that GGLR outperformed competing schemes in interpolation quality for severely damaged images at a reduced complexity.

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations: an instrument to observe the 21cm hydrogen line in the redshift range 0.13 $<$ z $<$ 0.45 -- status update

BINGO (BAO from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations) is a unique radio telescope designed to map the intensity of neutral hydrogen distribution at cosmological distances, making the first detection of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) in the frequency band 980 MHz - 1260 MHz, corresponding to a redshift range $0.127 < z < 0.449$. BAO is one of the most powerful probes of cosmological parameters and BINGO was designed to detect the BAO signal to a level that makes it possible to put new constraints on the equation of state of dark energy. The telescope will be built in Paraíba, Brazil and consists of two $\thicksim$ 40m mirrors, a feedhorn array of 28 horns, and no moving parts, working as a drift-scan instrument. It will cover a $15^{\circ}$ declination strip centered at $\sim δ=-15^{\circ}$, mapping $\sim 5400$ square degrees in the sky. The BINGO consortium is led by University of São Paulo with co-leadership at National Institute for Space Research and Campina Grande Federal University (Brazil). Telescope subsystems have already been fabricated and tested, and the dish and structure fabrication are expected to start in late 2020, as well as the road and terrain preparation.

Battery characterization via eddy-current imaging with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Sensitive and accurate diagnostic technologies with magnetic sensors are of great importance for identifying and localizing defects of rechargeable solid batteries in a noninvasive detection. We demonstrate a microwave-free AC magnetometry method with negatively charged NV centers in diamond based on a cross-relaxation feature between NV centers and individual substitutional nitrogen (P1) centers occurring at 51.2 mT. We apply the technique to non-destructive solid-state battery imaging. By detecting the eddy-current-induced magnetic field of the battery, we distinguish a defect on the external electrode and identify structural anomalies within the battery body. The achieved spatial resolution is $360\,μ\rm m$. The maximum magnetic field and phase shift generated by the battery at the modulation frequency of 5 kHz are estimated as 0.04 mT and 0.03 rad respectively.

Sequential Gibbs Sampling Algorithm for Cognitive Diagnosis Models with Many Attributes

Cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) are useful statistical tools to provide rich information relevant for intervention and learning. As a popular approach to estimate and make inference of CDMs, the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is widely used in practice. However, when the number of attributes, $K$, is large, the existing MCMC algorithm may become time-consuming, due to the fact that $O(2^K)$ calculations are usually needed in the process of MCMC sampling to get the conditional distribution for each attribute profile. To overcome this computational issue, motivated by Culpepper and Hudson (2018), we propose a computationally efficient sequential Gibbs sampling method, which needs $O(K)$ calculations to sample each attribute profile. We use simulation and real data examples to show the good finite-sample performance of the proposed sequential Gibbs sampling, and its advantage over existing methods.

Influence of microstructure and atomic-scale chemistry on iron ore reduction with hydrogen at 700°C

With 1.85 billion tons produced per year, steel is the most important material class in terms of volume and environmental impact. While steel is a sustainability enabler, for instance through lightweight design, magnetic devices, and efficient turbines, its primary production is not. For 3000 years, iron has been reduced from ores using carbon. Today 2.1 tons CO2 are produced per ton of steel, causing 30% of the global CO2 emissions in the manufacturing sector, which translates to 6.5% of the global CO2 emissions. These numbers qualify iron- and steel-making as the largest single industrial greenhouse gas emission source. The envisaged future industrial route to mitigate these CO2 emissions targets green hydrogen as a reductant. Although this reaction has been studied for decades, its kinetics is not well understood, particularly during the wustite reduction step which is dramatically slower than the hematite reduction. Many rate-limiting factors of this reaction are set by the micro- and nanostructure as well as the local chemistry of the ores. Their quantification allows knowledge-driven ore preparation and process optimization to make the hydrogen-based reduction of iron ores commercially viable, enabling the required massive CO2 mitigation to ease global warming. Here, we report on a multi-scale structure and composition analysis of iron reduced from hematite with pure H2, reaching down to near-atomic scale.

Hubble constant and sound horizon from the late-time Universe

We measure the expansion rate of the recent Universe and the calibration scale of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) from low-redshift data. BAO relies on the calibration scale, i.e., the sound horizon at the end of drag epoch $r_d$, which often imposes a prior of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurement from the Planck satellite. In order to make really independent measurements of $H_0$, we leave $r_d$ completely free and use the BAO data sets combined with the 31 observational $H(z)$ data, GW170817 and Pantheon sample of Type Ia supernovae. In $Λ$CDM model, we get $H_0=68.63^{+1.75}_{-1.77}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $r_d=146.85^{+3.29}_{-3.77}$ Mpc. For the two model-independent reconstructions of $H(z)$, we obtain $H_0=68.02\pm1.82$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $r_d=148.18^{+3.36}_{-3.78}$ Mpc in the cubic expansion, and $H_0=68.58\pm1.76$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $r_d=148.02^{+3.63}_{-3.60}$ Mpc in the polynomial expansion. The values of Hubble constant $H_0$ and sound horizon $r_d$ are consistent with the estimate derived from the Planck CMB data assuming a flat $Λ$CDM model, but $H_0$ is in $2.4\sim2.6$ $σ$ tension with SH0ES 2019, respectively.

Development of Multi-Layer Fabrication Process for SFQ Large Scale Integrated Digital Circuits

We have developed a fabrication technology for the development of large-scale superconducting integrated circuits with Nb-based Josephson junctions. The standard fabrication process with 10 mask levels uses four metal layers including 3 Nb superconducting layers and a Mo resistor layer. The influence of deposition parameters on film stress, electrical properties, and surface roughness were studied systematically. High quality Nb, Al, Mo, and SiO2 films were successfully deposited for the subsequent fabrication of circuits. The circuit fabrication started with the fabrication of Mo resistors with a target sheet resistance Rsh of 2 Ome, followed by the deposition of Josephson-junction. The target critical current density Jc was set at 6 kA per cm2. The thicknesses and etch depths of the films were monitored during fabrication with on-wafer process-control-monitor (PCM) patterns for all the wafers.

Polarization-Encrypted Orbital Angular Momentum Multiplexed Metasurface Holography

Metasurface holography has the advantage of realizing complex wavefront modulation by thin layers together with the progressive technique of computer-generated holographic imaging. Despite the well-known light parameters, like amplitude, phase, polarization and frequency, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a beam can be regarded as another degree of freedom. Here, we propose and demonstrate orbital angular momentum multiplexing at different polarization channels using a birefringent metasurface for holographic encryption. The OAM selective holographic information can only be reconstructed with the exact topological charge and a specific polarization state. By using an incident beam with different topological charges as erasers, we mimic a super-resolution case for the reconstructed image, in analogy to the well-known STED technique in microscopy. The combination of multiple polarization channels together with the orbital angular momentum selectivity provides a higher security level for holographic encryption. Such a technique can be applied for beam shaping, optical camouflage, data storage, and dynamic displays.

3D Point Cloud Enhancement using Graph-Modelled Multiview Depth Measurements

A 3D point cloud is often synthesized from depth measurements collected by sensors at different viewpoints. The acquired measurements are typically both coarse in precision and corrupted by noise. To improve quality, previous works denoise a synthesized 3D point cloud a posteriori after projecting the imperfect depth data onto 3D space. Instead, we enhance depth measurements on the sensed images a priori, exploiting inherent 3D geometric correlation across views, before synthesizing a 3D point cloud from the improved measurements. By enhancing closer to the actual sensing process, we benefit from optimization targeting specifically the depth image formation model, before subsequent processing steps that can further obscure measurement errors. Mathematically, for each pixel row in a pair of rectified viewpoint depth images, we first construct a graph reflecting inter-pixel similarities via metric learning using data in previous enhanced rows. To optimize left and right viewpoint images simultaneously, we write a non-linear mapping function from left pixel row to the right based on 3D geometry relations. We formulate a MAP optimization problem, which, after suitable linear approximations, results in an unconstrained convex and differentiable objective, solvable using fast gradient method (FGM). Experimental results show that our method noticeably outperforms recent denoising algorithms that enhance after 3D point clouds are synthesized.

Measuring $H_0$ from low-$z$ datasets

Adopting the low-redshift observational datasets, including the Pantheon sample of Type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation measurements, and the tomographic Alcock-Paczynski method, we determine the Hubble constant to be $67.95^{+0.78}_{-1.03}$ , $69.81^{+2.22}_{-2.70}$ and $66.75^{+3.42}_{-4.23}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ at 68\% confidence level in the $Λ$CDM, $w$CDM and $w_0w_a$CDM models, respectively. Compared to the Hubble constant given by Riess et al. in 2019, we conclude that the new physics beyond the standard $Λ$CDM model is needed if all of these datasets are reliable.

Tuning Single-Atom Electron Spin Resonance in a Vector-Magnetic Field

Spin resonance of single spin centers bears great potential for chemical structure analysis, quantum sensing and quantum coherent manipulation. Essential for these experiments is the presence of a two-level spin system whose energy splitting can be chosen by applying a magnetic field. In recent years, a combination of electron spin resonance (ESR) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been demonstrated as a technique to detect magnetic properties of single atoms on surfaces and to achieve sub-$μ$eV energy resolution. Nevertheless, up to now the role of the required magnetic fields has not been elucidated. Here, we perform single-atom ESR on individual Fe atoms adsorbed on magnesium oxide (MgO), using a 2D vector magnetic field as well as the local field of the magnetic STM tip in a commercially available STM. We show how the ESR amplitude can be greatly improved by optimizing the magnetic fields, revealing in particular an enhanced signal at large in-plane magnetic fields. Moreover, we demonstrate that the stray field from the magnetic STM tip is a versatile tool. We use it here to drive the electron spin more efficiently and to perform ESR measurements at constant frequency by employing tip-field sweeps. Lastly, we show that it is possible to perform ESR using only the tip field, under zero external magnetic field, which promises to make this technique available in many existing STM systems.

The redshift dependence of Alcock-Paczynski effect: cosmological constraints from the current and next generation observations

The tomographic Alcock-Paczynski (AP) test is a robust large-scale structure (LSS) measurement that receives little contamination from the redshift space distortion (RSD). It has placed tight cosmological constraints by using small and intermediate clustering scales of the LSS data. However, previous works have neglected the cross-correlation among different redshift bins, which could cause the statistical uncertainty being underestimated by $\sim$20\%. In this work, we further improve this method by including this multi-redshifts full correlation. We apply it to the SDSS DR12 galaxies sample and find out that, for $Λ$CDM, the combination of AP with the Planck+BAO dataset slightly reduces (within 1-$σ$) $Ω_m$ to $0.304\pm0.007$ (68.3\% CL). This then leads to a larger $H_0$ and also mildly affects $Ω_b h^2$, $n_s$ and the derived parameters $z_*$, $r_*$, $z_{re}$ but not $τ$, $A_s$ and $σ_8$. For the flat $w$CDM model, our measurement gives $Ω_m=0.301\pm 0.010$ and $w=-1.090\pm 0.047$, where the additional AP measurement reduces the error budget by $\sim 25\%$. When including more parameters into the analysis, the AP method also improves the constraints on $Ω_k$, $\sum m_μ$, $N_{\rm eff}$ by $20-30\%$. Early universe parameters such as $dn_s/d{\rm ln}k$ and $r$, however, are unaffected. Assuming the dark energy equation of state $w=w_0+w_a \frac{z}{1+z}$, the Planck+BAO+SNIa+$H_0$+AP datasets prefer a dynamical dark energy at $\approx1.5 σ$ CL. Finally, we forecast the cosmological constraints expected from the DESI galaxy survey and find that combining AP with CMB+BAO method would improve the $w_0$-$w_a$ constraint by a factor of $\sim 10$.

Constraints on $H_0$ from WMAP and baryon acoustic osillation measurements

We report the constraints of $H_0$ obtained from Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) combined with the latest baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurements. We use the BAO measurements from the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS), the SDSS DR7 main galaxies sample (MGS), the BOSS DR12 galaxies and the eBOSS DR14 quasars. Adding the recent BAO measurements to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data from WMAP, we constrain cosmological parameters $Ω_m=0.298\pm0.005$, $H_0=68.36^{+0.53}_{-0.52}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $σ_8=0.8170^{+0.0159}_{-0.0175}$ in a spatially flat $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model, and $Ω_m=0.302\pm0.008$, $H_0=67.63\pm1.30$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $σ_8=0.7988^{+0.0345}_{-0.0338}$ in a spatially flat $w$CDM model, respectively. The combined constraint on $w$ from CMB and BAO in a spatially flat $w$CDM model is $w=-0.96\pm0.07$. Our measured $H_0$ results prefer a value lower than 70 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, consistent with the recent data on CMB constraints from Planck (2018), but in $3.1\sim 3.5σ$ tension with local measurements of Riess et al. (2018) in $Λ$CDM and $w$CDM framework, respectively. Compared with the WMAP alone analysis, the WMPA+BAO analysis reduces the error bar by 75.4% in $Λ$CDM model and 95.3% in $w$CDM model.

Location Estimation and Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks in the Presence of Fading

In this paper, localization using narrowband communication signals are considered in the presence of fading channels with time of arrival measurements. When narrowband signals are used for localization, due to existing hardware constraints, fading channels play a crucial role in localization accuracy. In a location estimation formulation, the Cramer-Rao lower bound for localization error is derived under different assumptions on fading coefficients. For the same level of localization accuracy, the loss in performance due to Rayleigh fading with known phase is shown to be about 5dB compared to the case with no fading. Unknown phase causes an additional 1dB loss. The maximum likelihood estimators are also derived. In an alternative distributed detection formulation, each anchor receives a noisy signal from a node with known location if the node is active. Each anchor makes a decision as to whether the node is active or not and transmits a bit to a fusion center once a decision is made. The fusion center combines all the decisions and uses a design parameter to make the final decision. We derive optimal thresholds and calculate the probabilities of false alarm and detection under different assumptions on the knowledge of channel information. Simulations corroborate our analytical results.

Hopf bifurcation for a delayed diffusive logistic population model in the advective heterogeneous environment

In this paper, we investigate a delayed reaction-diffusion-advection equation, which models the population dynamics in the advective heterogeneous environment. The existence of the nonconstant positive steady state and associated Hopf bifurcation are obtained. A weighted inner product associated with the advection rate is introduced to compute the normal forms, which is the main difference between Hopf bifurcation for delayed reaction-diffusion-advection model and that for delayed reaction-diffusion model. Moreover, we find that the spatial scale and advection can affect Hopf bifurcation in the heterogenous environment.

Quasiparticle Screening near a Bosonic Superconductor-Insulator Transition Revealed by Magnetic Impurity Doping

Experiments show that the Cooper pair transport in the insulator phase that forms at thin film superconductor to insulator transitions (SIT) is simply activated. This activated behavior depends on the microscopic factors that drive the localization of the Cooper pairs. To test proposed models, we investigated how a perturbation that weakens Cooper pair binding, magnetic impurity doping, affects the characteristic activation energy, $T_0$. The data show that $T_0$ decreases monotonically with doping in films tuned farther from the SIT and increases and peaks in films that are closer to the SIT critical point. These observations provide strong evidence that the bosonic SIT in thin films is a Mott transition driven by Coulomb interactions that are screened by virtual quasi-particle excitations. This dependence on underlying fermionic degrees of freedom distinguishes these SITs from those in micro-fabricated Josephson Junction Arrays, cold atom systems, and likely in high temperature superconductors with nodes in their quasiparticle density of states.

Adaptive Streaming in Interactive Multiview Video Systems

Multiview applications endow final users with the possibility to freely navigate within 3D scenes with minimum-delay. A real feeling of scene navigation is enabled by transmitting multiple high-quality camera views, which can be used to synthesize additional virtual views to offer a smooth navigation. However, when network resources are limited, not all camera views can be sent at high quality. It is therefore important, yet challenging, to find the right tradeoff between coding artifacts (reducing the quality of camera views) and virtual synthesis artifacts (reducing the number of camera views sent to users). To this aim, we propose an optimal transmission strategy for interactive multiview HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS). We propose a problem formulation to select the optimal set of camera views that the client requests for downloading, such that the navigation quality experienced by the user is optimized while the bandwidth constraints are satisfied. We show that our optimization problem is NP-hard, and we therefore develop an optimal solution based on the dynamic programming algorithm with polynomial time complexity. To further simplify the deployment, we present a suboptimal greedy algorithm with effective performance and lower complexity. The proposed controller is evaluated in theoretical and realistic settings characterized by realistic network statistics estimation, buffer management and server-side representation optimization. Simulation results show significant improvement in terms of navigation quality compared with alternative baseline multiview adaptation logic solutions.
