Tight $H_0$ constraint from galaxy redshfit surveys: combining baryon acoustic osillation measurements and Alcock-Paczynski test

We report a tight Hubble constant constraint $67.78^{+1.21}_{-1.86}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ (2.26\% precision) derived from galaxy redshift surveys. We combine the BAO measurements from 6dFGS, the SDSS DR7 main galaxies, the BOSS DR12 galaxies, and eBOSS DR14 quasars, and also apply the tomographic Alcock-Paczynski (AP) method to the BOSS DR12 galaxies, to place constraints on $H_0$ in the spatially flat $Λ$CDM framework. Our result is fully consistent with the CMB constraints from Planck, but in $2.58σ$ tension with local measurements of Riess et al. 2016. Compared with the BAO alone constraint, the BAO+AP combined result reduces the error bar by 32%. This shows the strong power of the tomographic AP method in extracting cosmological information from galaxy redshift surveys.

An accelerated proximal iterative hard thresholding method for $\ell_0$ minimization

In this paper, we consider a non-convex problem which is the sum of $\ell_0$-norm and a convex smooth function under box constraint. We propose one proximal iterative hard thresholding type method with extrapolation step used for acceleration and establish its global convergence results. In detail, the sequence generated by the proposed method globally converges to a local minimizer of the objective function. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments to show the proposed method's effectiveness on comparison with some other efficient methods.

How to Train Triplet Networks with 100K Identities?

Training triplet networks with large-scale data is challenging in face recognition. Due to the number of possible triplets explodes with the number of samples, previous studies adopt the online hard negative mining(OHNM) to handle it. However, as the number of identities becomes extremely large, the training will suffer from bad local minima because effective hard triplets are difficult to be found. To solve the problem, in this paper, we propose training triplet networks with subspace learning, which splits the space of all identities into subspaces consisting of only similar identities. Combined with the batch OHNM, hard triplets can be found much easier. Experiments on the large-scale MS-Celeb-1M challenge with 100K identities demonstrate that the proposed method can largely improve the performance. In addition, to deal with heavy noise and large-scale retrieval, we also make some efforts on robust noise removing and efficient image retrieval, which are used jointly with the subspace learning to obtain the state-of-the-art performance on the MS-Celeb-1M competition (without external data in Challenge1).

Energy conditions and constraints on the generalized non-local gravity model

We study and derive the energy conditions in generalized non-local gravity, which is the modified theory of general relativity (GR) obtained by adding a term $m^{2n-2}R\Box^{-n}R$ to the Einstein-Hilbert action. Moreover, in order to get some insight on the meaning of the energy conditions, we illustrate the evolutions of four energy conditions with the model parameter $\varepsilon$ for different $n$. By analysis we give the constraints on the model parameters $\varepsilon$.

Complexity classification of two-qubit commuting hamiltonians

We classify two-qubit commuting Hamiltonians in terms of their computational complexity. Suppose one has a two-qubit commuting Hamiltonian H which one can apply to any pair of qubits, starting in a computational basis state. We prove a dichotomy theorem: either this model is efficiently classically simulable or it allows one to sample from probability distributions which cannot be sampled from classically unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses. Furthermore, the only simulable Hamiltonians are those which fail to generate entanglement. This shows that generic two-qubit commuting Hamiltonians can be used to perform computational tasks which are intractable for classical computers under plausible assumptions. Our proof makes use of new postselection gadgets and Lie theory.

Cosmological evolution of generalized non-local gravity

We construct a class of generalized non-local gravity (GNLG) model which is the modified theory of general relativity (GR) obtained by adding a term $m^{2n-2} R\Box^{-n}R$ to the Einstein-Hilbert action. Concretely, we not only study the gravitational equation for the GNLG model by introducing auxiliary scalar fields, but also analyse the classical stability and examine the cosmological consequences of the model for different exponent $n$. We find that the half of the scalar fields are always ghost-like and the exponent $n$ must be taken even number for a stable GNLG model. Meanwhile, the model spontaneously generates three dominant phases of the evolution of the universe, and the equation of state parameters turn out to be phantom-like. Furthermore, we clarify in another way that exponent $n$ should be even numbers by discuss the spherically symmetric static solutions in Newtonian gauge. It is worth stressing that the results given by us can include ones in refs. [28, 34] as the special case of $n=2$.

Lifshitz effects on holographic $p$-wave superfluid

In the probe limit, we numerically build a holographic $p$-wave superfluid model in the four-dimensional Lifshitz black hole coupled to a Maxwell-complex vector field. We observe the rich phase structure and find that the Lifshitz dynamical exponent $z$ contributes evidently to the effective mass of the matter field and dimension of the gravitational background. Concretely, we obtain the Cave of Winds appeared only in the five-dimensional anti-de Sitter~(AdS) spacetime, and the increasing $z$ hinders not only the condensate but also the appearance of the first-order phase transition. Furthermore, our results agree with the Ginzburg-Landau results near the critical temperature. In addition, the previous AdS superfluid model is generalized to the Lifshitz spacetime.

Lifshitz Scaling Effects on Holographic Superconductors

Via numerical and analytical methods, the effects of the Lifshitz dynamical exponent $z$ on holographic superconductors are studied in some detail, including $s$ wave and $p$ wave models. Working in the probe limit, we find that the behaviors of holographic models indeed depend on concrete value of $z$. We obtain the condensation and conductivity in both Lifshitz black hole and soliton backgrounds with general $z$. For both $s$ wave and $p$ wave models in the black hole backgrounds, as $z$ increases, the phase transition becomes more difficult and the growth of conductivity is suppressed. For the Lifshitz soliton backgrounds, when $z$ increases ($z=1,~2,~3$), the critical chemical potential decreases in the $s$ wave cases but increases in the $p$ wave cases. For $p$ wave models in both Lifshitz black hole and soliton backgrounds, the anisotropy between the AC conductivity in different spatial directions is suppressed when $z$ increases. The analytical results uphold the numerical results.

Magnetic-field effects on $p$-wave phase transition in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In the probe limit, we study the holographic $p$-wave phase transition in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity via numerical and analytical methods. Concretely, we study the influences of the external magnetic field on the Maxwell complex vector model in the five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole and soliton backgrounds, respectively. For the two backgrounds, the results show that the magnetic field enhances the superconductor phase transition in the case of the lowest Landau level, while the increasing Gauss-Bonnet parameter always hinders the vector condensate. Moreover, the Maxwell complex vector model is a generalization of the SU(2) Yang-Mills model all the time. In addition, the analytical results backup the numerical results. Furthermore, this model might provide a holographic realization for the QCD vacuum instability.

Five-dimensional generalized $f(R)$ gravity with curvature-matter coupling

The generalized $f(R)$ gravity with curvature-matter coupling in five-dimensional (5D) spacetime can be established by assuming a hypersurface-orthogonal spacelike Killing vector field of 5D spacetime, and it can be reduced to the 4D formulism of FRW universe. This theory is quite general and can give the corresponding results to the Einstein gravity, $f(R)$ gravity with both no-coupling and non-minimal coupling in 5D spacetime as special cases, that is, we would give the some new results besides previous ones given by Ref.\cite{60}. Furthermore, in order to get some insight into the effects of this theory on the 4D spacetime, by considering a specific type of models with $f_{1}(R)=f_{2}(R)=αR^{m}$ and $B(L_{m})=L_{m}=-ρ$, we not only discuss the constraints on the model parameters $m$, $n$, but also illustrate the evolutionary trajectories of the scale factor $a(t)$, the deceleration parameter $q(t)$ and the scalar field $ε(t)$, $ϕ(t)$ in the reduced 4D spacetime. The research results show that this type of $f(R)$ gravity models given by us could explain the current accelerated expansion of our universe without introducing dark energy.

Ada-MAC: An Adaptive MAC Protocol for Real-time and Reliable Health Monitoring,

IEEE 802.15.4 is regarded as one of the most suitable communication protocols for cyber-physical applications of wireless sensor and actuator networks. This is because this protocol is able to achieve low-power and low-cost transmission in wireless personal area networks. But most cyber-physical systems (CPSs) require a degree of real-time and reliability from the underlying communication protocol. Some of them are stricter than the others. However, IEEE 802.15.4 protocol cannot provide reliability and real-time transmission for time-critical and delay-sensitive data in cyber-physical applications. To solve this problem, we propose a new MAC protocol, i.e. the Ada-MAC protocol, which is based on IEEE 802.15.4 beacon-enabled mode. It can support cyber-physical applications such as health monitoring, which require stringent real- time and reliability guarantees. We implement the proposed protocol on the OMNET++ platform and conduct a performance evaluation of the proposed protocol with comparison against the traditional IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. The results are presented and analyzed.
