Complexes from Complexes: Finite Element Complexes in Three Dimensions

In the field of solving partial differential equations (PDEs), Hilbert complexes have become highly significant. Recent advances focus on creating new complexes using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) framework, as shown by Arnold and Hu [Complexes from complexes. {\em Found. Comput. Math.}, 2021]. This paper extends their approach to three-dimensional finite element complexes. The finite element Hessian, elasticity, and divdiv complexes are systematically derived by applying techniques such as smooth finite element de Rham complexes, the $t$-$n$ decomposition, and trace complexes, along with related two-dimensional finite element analogs. The construction includes two reduction operations and one augmentation operation to address continuity differences in the BGG diagram, ultimately resulting in a comprehensive and effective framework for constructing finite element complexes, which have various applications in PDE solving.

Decoupled finite element methods for a fourth-order exterior differential equation

This paper proposes novel decoupled finite element methods for a fourth-order exterior differential equation. Based on differential complexes and the Helmholtz decomposition, the fourth-order exterior differential equation is decomposed into two second-order exterior differential equations and one generalized Stokes equation. A key advantage of this decoupled formulation is that it avoids the use of quotient spaces. A family of conforming finite element methods are developed for the decoupled formulation. Numerical results are provided for verifying the decoupled finite element methods of the biharmonic equation in three dimensions.

Distributional Finite Element curl div Complexes and Application to Quad Curl Problems

The paper addresses the challenge of constructing finite element curl div complexes in three dimensions. Tangential-normal continuity is introduced in order to develop distributional finite element curl div complexes. The spaces constructed are applied to discretize the quad curl problem, demonstrating optimal order of convergence. Furthermore, a hybridization technique is proposed, demonstrating its equivalence to nonconforming finite elements and weak Galerkin methods.

A robust $C^0$ interior penalty method for a gradient-elastic Kirchhoff plate model

This paper is devoted to proposing and analyzing a robust $C^0$ interior penalty method for a gradient-elastic Kirchhoff plate (GEKP) model over a convex polygon. The numerical method is obtained by combining the triangular Hermite element and a $C^0$ interior penalty method, which can avoid the use of higher order shape functions or macroelements. Next, a robust regularity estimate is established for the GEKP model based on our earlier result for a triharmonic equation on a convex polygon. Furthermore, some local lower bound estimates of the a posteriori error analysis are established. These together with an enriching operator and its error estimates lead to a Céa-like lemma. Thereby, the optimal error estimates are achieved, which are also robust with respect to the small size parameter. In addition, it is proved that this numerical method is convergent without any additional regularity assumption for the exact solution. Some numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical findings.

$H(\textrm{div})$-conforming Finite Element Tensors with Constraints

A unified construction of $H(\textrm{div})$-conforming finite element tensors, including vector element, symmetric matrix element, traceless matrix element, and, in general, tensors with linear constraints, is developed in this work. It is based on the geometric decomposition of Lagrange elements into bubble functions on each sub-simplex. Each tensor at a sub-simplex is decomposed into tangential and normal components. The tangential component forms the bubble function space, while the normal component characterizes the trace. Some degrees of freedom can be redistributed to $(n-1)$-dimensional faces. The developed finite element spaces are $H(\textrm{div})$-conforming and satisfy the discrete inf-sup condition. Intrinsic bases of the constraint tensor space are also established.

Finite Element Complexes in Two Dimensions

In this study, two-dimensional finite element complexes with various levels of smoothness, including the de Rham complex, the curldiv complex, the elasticity complex, and the divdiv complex, are systematically constructed. Smooth scalar finite elements in two dimensions are developed based on a non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice and the Bernstein basis of the polynomial space, with the order of differentiability at vertices being greater than twice that at edges. Finite element de Rham complexes with different levels of smoothness are devised using smooth finite elements with smoothness parameters that satisfy certain relations. Finally, finite element elasticity complexes and finite element divdiv complexes are derived from finite element de Rham complexes by using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) framework. This study is the first work to construct finite element complexes in a systematic way. Moreover, the novel tools developed in this work, such as the non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice and the discrete BGG construction, can be useful for further research in this field.

Geometric Decomposition and Efficient Implementation of High Order Face and Edge Elements

This study investigates high-order face and edge elements in finite element methods, with a focus on their geometric attributes, indexing management, and practical application. The exposition begins by a geometric decomposition of Lagrange finite elements, setting the foundation for further analysis. The discussion then extends to $H(\rm{div})$-conforming and $H(\rm{curl})$-conforming finite element spaces, adopting variable frames across differing sub-simplices. The imposition of tangential or normal continuity is achieved through the strategic selection of corresponding bases. The paper concludes with a focus on efficient indexing management strategies for degrees of freedom, offering practical guidance to researchers and engineers. It serves as a comprehensive resource that bridges the gap between theory and practice.

A New Div-Div-Conforming Symmetric Tensor Finite Element Space with Applications to the Biharmonic Equation

A new $H(\textrm{divdiv})$-conforming finite element is presented, which avoids the need for super-smoothness by redistributing the degrees of freedom to edges and faces. This leads to a hybridizable mixed method with superconvergence for the biharmonic equation. Moreover, new finite element divdiv complexes are established. Finally, new weak Galerkin and $C^0$ discontinuous Galerkin methods for the biharmonic equation are derived.

New low-order mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity

New low-order $H(\textrm{div})$-conforming finite elements for symmetric tensors are constructed in arbitrary dimension. The space of shape functions is defined by enriching the symmetric quadratic polynomial space with the $(d+1)$-order normal-normal face bubble space. The reduced counterpart has only $d(d+1)^2$ degrees of freedom. Basis functions are explicitly given in terms of barycentric coordinates. Low-order conforming finite element elasticity complexes starting from the Bell element, are developed in two dimensions. These finite elements for symmetric tensors are applied to devise robust mixed finite element methods for the linear elasticity problem, which possess the uniform error estimates with respect to the Lamé coefficient $λ$, and superconvergence for the displacement. Numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical convergence rates.

A robust lower order mixed finite element method for a strain gradient elasticity model

A robust nonconforming mixed finite element method is developed for a strain gradient elasticity (SGE) model. In two and three dimensional cases, a lower order $C^0$-continuous $H^2$-nonconforming finite element is constructed for the displacement field through enriching the quadratic Lagrange element with bubble functions. This together with the linear Lagrange element is exploited to discretize a mixed formulation of the SGE model. The robust discrete inf-sup condition is established. The sharp and uniform error estimates with respect to both the small size parameter and the Lamé coefficient are achieved, which is also verified by numerical results. In addition, the uniform regularity of the SGE model is derived under two reasonable assumptions.

Virtual Element Methods Without Extrinsic Stabilization

Virtual element methods (VEMs) without extrinsic stabilization in arbitrary degree of polynomial are developed for second order elliptic problems, including a nonconforming VEM and a conforming VEM in arbitrary dimension. The key is to construct local $H(\textrm{div})$-conforming macro finite element spaces such that the associated $L^2$ projection of the gradient of virtual element functions is computable, and the $L^2$ projector has a uniform lower bound on the gradient of virtual element function spaces in $L^2$ norm. Optimal error estimates are derived for these VEMs. Numerical experiments are provided to test the VEMs without extrinsic stabilization.

$H^m$-Conforming Virtual Elements in Arbitrary Dimension

The $H^m$-conforming virtual elements of any degree $k$ on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with $m, n\geq1$ and $k\geq m$ are recursively constructed by gluing conforming virtual elements on faces in a universal way. For the lowest degree case $k=m$, the set of degrees of freedom only involves function values and derivatives up to order $m-1$ at the vertices of the polytope. The inverse inequality and several norm equivalences for the $H^m$-conforming virtual elements are rigorously proved. The $H^m$-conforming virtual elements are then applied to discretize a polyharmonic equation with a lower order term. With the help of the interpolation error estimate and norm equivalences, the optimal error estimates are derived for the $H^m$-conforming virtual element method.

Nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes in three dimensions

Two nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes starting from the conforming Lagrange element and ending with the nonconforming $P_1$-$P_0$ element for the Stokes equation in three dimensions are constructed. And commutative diagrams are also shown by combining nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes and interpolation operators. The lower order $\boldsymbol H(\textrm{grad}\textrm{curl})$-nonconforming finite element only has $14$ degrees of freedom, whose basis functions are explicitly given in terms of the barycentric coordinates. The $\boldsymbol H(\textrm{grad}\textrm{curl})$-nonconforming elements are applied to solve the quad-curl problem, and optimal convergence is derived. By the nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes, the mixed finite element methods of the quad-curl problem are decoupled into two mixed methods of the Maxwell equation and the nonconforming $P_1$-$P_0$ element method for the Stokes equation, based on which a fast solver is discussed. Numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical convergence rates.

Robust mixed finite element methods for a quad-curl singular perturbation problem

Robust mixed finite element methods are developed for a quad-curl singular perturbation problem. Lower order H(grad curl)-nonconforming but H(curl)-conforming finite elements are constructed, which are extended to nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes and the associated commutative diagrams. Then H(grad curl)-nonconforming finite elements are employed to discretize the quad-curl singular perturbation problem, which possess the sharp and uniform error estimates with respect to the perturbation parameter. The Nitsche's technique is exploited to achieve the optimal convergence rate in the case of the boundary layers. Numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical convergence rates. In addition, the regularity of the quad-curl singular perturbation problem is established.

Finite Element de Rham and Stokes Complexes in Three Dimensions

Finite element de Rham complexes and finite element Stokes complexes with various smoothness in three dimensions are systematically constructed. First smooth scalar finite elements in three dimensions are derived through a non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice. Based on the smooth scalar finite elements, both H(div)-conforming finite elements and H(curl)-conforming finite elements with various smoothness are devised, which induce the finite element de Rham complexes with various smoothness and the associated commutative diagrams. The div stability is established for the H(div)-conforming finite elements, and the exactness of these finite element complexes.

Antarctic Survey Telescope 3-3: Overview, System Performance and Preliminary Observations at Yaoan, Yunnan

The third Antarctic Survey Telescope array instrument at Dome A in Antarctica, the AST3-3 telescope, has been in commissioning from March 2021. We deployed AST3-3 at the Yaoan astronomical station in Yunnan Province for an automatic time-domain survey and follow-up observations with an optimised observation and protection system. The telescope system of AST3-3 is similar to that of AST3-1 and AST3-2, except that it is equipped with a 14K~$ \times$~10K QHY411 CMOS camera. AST3-3 has a field of view of $1.65^\circ \times 1.23^\circ$ and is currently using the $g$ band filter. During commissioning at Yaoan, AST3-3 aims to conduct an extragalactic transient survey, coupled with prompt follow-ups of opportunity targets. In this paper, we present the architecture of the AST3-3 automatic observation system. We demonstrate the data processing of observations by representatives SN 2022eyw and GRB 210420B.

Finite elements for div and divdiv conforming symmetric tensors in arbitrary dimension

Several div-conforming and divdiv-conforming finite elements for symmetric tensors on simplexes in arbitrary dimension are constructed in this work. The shape function space is first split as the trace space and the bubble space. The later is further decomposed into the null space of the differential operator and its orthogonal complement. Instead of characterization of these subspaces of the shape function space, characterization of the dual spaces are provided. Vector div-conforming finite elements are firstly constructed as an introductory example. Then new symmetric div-conforming finite elements are constructed. The dual subspaces are then used as build blocks to construct divdiv conforming finite elements.
