Error analysis of a decoupled finite element method for quad-curl problems

Finite element approximation to a decoupled formulation for the quad--curl problem is studied in this paper. The difficulty of constructing elements with certain conformity to the quad--curl problems has been greatly reduced. For convex domains, where the regularity assumption holds for Stokes equation, the approximation to the curl of the true solution has quadratic order of convergence and first order for the energy norm. If the solution shows singularity, an a posterior error estimator is developed and a separate marking adaptive finite element procedure is proposed, together with its convergence proved. Both the a priori and a posteriori error analysis are supported by the numerical examples.

Geometric decompositions of the simplicial lattice and smooth finite elements in arbitrary dimension

Recently $C^m$-conforming finite elements on simplexes in arbitrary dimension are constructed by Hu, Lin and Wu. The key in the construction is a non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice in which each component will be used to determine the normal derivatives at each lower dimensional sub-simplex. A geometric approach is proposed in this paper and a geometric decomposition of the finite element spaces is given. Our geometric decomposition using the graph distance not only simplifies the construction but also provides an easy way of implementation.

A finite element elasticity complex in three dimensions

A finite element elasticity complex on tetrahedral meshes is devised. The $H^1$ conforming finite element is the smooth finite element developed by Neilan for the velocity field in a discrete Stokes complex. The symmetric div-conforming finite element is the Hu-Zhang element for stress tensors. The construction of an $H(\textrm{inc})$-conforming finite element for symmetric tensors is the main focus of this paper. The key tools of the construction are the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces and the characterization of the trace of the $\textrm{inc}$ operator. The polynomial elasticity complex and Koszul elasticity complex are created to derive the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces. The trace of the $\textrm{inc}$ operator is induced from a Green's identity. Trace complexes and bubble complexes are also derived to facilitate the construction. Our construction appears to be the first $H(\textrm{inc})$-conforming finite elements on tetrahedral meshes without further splits.

Piecewise Divergence-Free Nonconforming Virtual Elements for Stokes Problem in Any Dimensions

Piecewise divergence-free nonconforming virtual elements are designed for Stokes problem in any dimensions. After introducing a local energy projector based on the Stokes problem and the stabilization, a divergence-free nonconforming virtual element method is proposed for Stokes problem. A detailed and rigorous error analysis is presented for the discrete method. An important property in the analysis is that the local energy projector commutes with the divergence operator. With the help of a divergence-free interpolation operator onto a generalized Raviart-Thomas element space, a pressure-robust nonconforming virtual element method is developed by simply modifying the right hand side of the previous discretization. A reduced virtual element method is also discussed. Numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical convergence.

Finite elements for divdiv-conforming symmetric tensors in three dimensions

Two types of finite element spaces on a tetrahedron are constructed for divdiv conforming symmetric tensors in three dimensions. The key tools of the construction are the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces and the characterization of the trace operators. First, the divdiv Hilbert complex and its corresponding polynomial complexes are presented. Several decompositions of polynomial vector and tensors spaces are derived from the polynomial complexes. Then, traces for div-div operator are characterized through a Green's identity. Besides the normal-normal component, another trace involving combination of first order derivatives of the tensor is continuous across the face. Due to the smoothness of polynomials, the symmetric tensor element is also continuous at vertices, and on the plane orthogonal to each edge. Third, a finite element for sym curl-conforming trace-free tensors is constructed following the same approach. Finally, a finite element divdiv complex, as well as the bubble functions complex, in three dimensions are established.

Finite elements for divdiv-conforming symmetric tensors

Two types of finite element spaces on triangles are constructed for div-div conforming symmetric tensors. Besides the normal-normal continuity, the stress tensor is continuous at vertices and another trace involving combination of derivatives of stress is identified. Polynomial complex, finite element complex, and Hilbert complex are presented and a commuting diagram between them is given. The constructed div-div conforming elements are exploited to discretize the mixed formulation of the biharmonic equation. Optimal order and superconvergence error analysis is provided. By rotation, finite elements for rot-rot conforming symmetric strain are also obtained.

A Morley-Wang-Xu element method for a fourth order elliptic singular perturbation problem

A Morley-Wang-Xu (MWX) element method with a simply modified right hand side is proposed for a fourth order elliptic singular perturbation problem, in which the discrete bilinear form is standard as usual nonconforming finite element methods. The sharp error analysis is given for this MWX element method. And the Nitsche's technique is applied to the MXW element method to achieve the optimal convergence rate in the case of the boundary layers. An important feature of the MWX element method is solver-friendly. Based on a discrete Stokes complex in two dimensions, the MWX element method is decoupled into one Lagrange element method of Poisson equation, two Morley element methods of Poisson equation and one nonconforming $P_1$-$P_0$ element method of Brinkman problem, which implies efficient and robust solvers for the MWX element method. Some numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical results.

Nonconforming Virtual Element Method for $2m$-th Order Partial Differential Equations in $\mathbb R^n$ with $m>n$

The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m>n$ and $k\geq m$ are constructed in a universal way. A generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product with $m>n$ is derived, which is essential to devise the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements. By means of the local $H^m$ projection and a stabilization term using only the boundary degrees of freedom, the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are proposed to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. The norm equivalence of the stabilization on the kernel of the local $H^m$ projection is proved by using the bubble function technique, the Poincaré inquality and the trace inequality, which implies the well-posedness of the virtual element methods. The optimal error estimates for the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are achieved from an estimate of the weak continuity and the error estimate of the canonical interpolation. Finally, the implementation of the nonconforming virtual element method is discussed.

Nonconforming Virtual Element Method for $2m$-th Order Partial Differential Equations in $\mathbb R^n$

A unified construction of the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ is developed on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m\leq n$ and $k\geq m$. As a vital tool in the construction, a generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product is derived. The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are then used to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. After establishing a bound on the jump related to the weak continuity, the optimal error estimate of the canonical interpolation, and the norm equivalence of the stabilization term, the optimal error estimates are derived for the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods.

Decoupling of Mixed Methods Based on Generalized Helmholtz Decompositions

A framework to systematically decouple high order elliptic equations into combination of Poisson-type and Stokes-type equations is developed. The key is to systematically construct the underling commutative diagrams involving the complexes and Helmholtz decompositions in a general way. Discretizing the decoupled formulation leads to a natural superconvergence between the Galerkin projection and the decoupled approximation. Examples include but not limit to: the primal formulations and mixed formulations of biharmonic equation, fourth order curl equation, and triharmonic equation etc. As a by-product, Helmholtz decompositions for many dual spaces are obtained.

Morley-Wang-Xu element methods with penalty for a fourth order elliptic singular perturbation problem

Two Morley-Wang-Xu element methods with penalty for the fourth order elliptic singular perturbation problem are proposed in this paper, including the interior penalty Morley-Wang-Xu element method and the super penalty Morley-Wang-Xu element method. The key idea in designing these two methods is combining the Morley-Wang-Xu element and penalty formulation for the Laplace operator. Robust a priori error estimates are derived under minimal regularity assumptions on the exact solution by means of some established a posteriori error estimates. Finally, we present some numerical results to demonstrate the theoretical estimates.

Multigrid Methods for Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson Mixed Method of Kirchhoff Plate Bending Problems

A V-cycle multigrid method for the Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson (HHJ) discretization of the Kirchhoff plate bending problems is developed in this paper. It is shown that the contraction number of the V-cycle multigrid HHJ mixed method is bounded away from one uniformly with respect to the mesh size. The uniform convergence is achieved for the V-cycle multigrid method with only one smoothing step and without full elliptic regularity. The key is a stable decomposition of the kernel space which is derived from an exact sequence of the HHJ mixed method, and the strengthened Cauchy Schwarz inequality. Some numerical experiments are provided to confirm the proposed V-cycle multigrid method. The exact sequences of the HHJ mixed method and the corresponding commutative diagram is of some interest independent of the current context.

An $hp$-version error analysis of the discontinuous Galerkin method for linear elasticity

An $hp$-version error analysis is developed for the general DG method in mixed formulation for solving the linear elastic problem. First of all, we give the $hp$-version error estimates of two $L^2$ projection operators. Then incorporated with the techniques in [11], we obtain the $hp$-version error estimates in energy norm and $L^2$ norm. Some numerical experiments are provided for demonstrating the theoretical results.

Stabilized mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity on simplicial grids in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$

In this paper, we design two classes of stabilized mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity on simplicial grids. In the first class of elements, we use $\boldsymbol{H}(\mathbf{div}, Ω; \mathbb{S})$-$P_k$ and $\boldsymbol{L}^2(Ω; \mathbb{R}^n)$-$P_{k-1}$ to approximate the stress and displacement spaces, respectively, for $1\leq k\leq n$, and employ a stabilization technique in terms of the jump of the discrete displacement over the faces of the triangulation under consideration; in the second class of elements, we use $\boldsymbol{H}_0^1(Ω; \mathbb{R}^n)$-$P_{k}$ to approximate the displacement space for $1\leq k\leq n$, and adopt the stabilization technique suggested by Brezzi, Fortin, and Marini. We establish the discrete inf-sup conditions, and consequently present the a priori error analysis for them. The main ingredient for the analysis is two special interpolation operators, which can be constructed using a crucial $\boldsymbol{H}(\mathbf{div})$ bubble function space of polynomials on each element. The feature of these methods is the low number of global degrees of freedom in the lowest order case. We present some numerical results to demonstrate the theoretical estimates.

Quasi-optimal convergence rate for an adaptive hybridizable C0 discontinuous Galerkin method for Kirchhoff plates

In this paper, we present an adaptive hybridizable $C^0$ discontinuous Galerkin (HCDG) method for Kirchhoff plates. A reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator is produced for this HCDG method. Quasi-orthogonality and discrete reliability are established with the help of a postprocessed bending moment and the discrete Helmholtz decomposition. Based on these, the contraction property between two consecutive loops and complexity of the adaptive HCDG method are studied thoroughly. The key points in our analysis are a postprocessed normal-normal continuous bending moment from the HCDG method solution and a lifting of jump residuals from inter-element boundaries to element interiors.

Fast Auxiliary Space Preconditioner for Linear Elasticity in Mixed Form

A block diagonal preconditioner with the minimal residual method and a block triangular preconditioner with the generalized minimal residual method are developed for Hu-Zhang mixed finite element methods of linear elasticity. They are based on a new stability result of the saddle point system in mesh-dependent norms. The mesh-dependent norm for the stress corresponds to the mass matrix which is easy to invert while the displacement it is spectral equivalent to Schur complement. A fast auxiliary space preconditioner based on the $H^1$ conforming linear element of the linear elasticity problem is then designed for solving the Schur complement. For both diagonal and triangular preconditioners, it is proved that the conditioning numbers of the preconditioned systems are bounded above by a constant independent of both the crucial Lamé constant and the mesh-size. Numerical examples are presented to support theoretical results. As byproducts, a new stabilized low order mixed finite element method is proposed and analyzed and superconvergence results of Hu-Zhang element are obtained.
