Phonons and phase symmetries in bulk $CrCl_3$ from scattering measurements and theory

Phonon-derived behaviors are important indicators of novel phenomena in transition metal trihalides, including spin liquid behavior, two-dimensional magnetism, and spin-lattice coupling. However, phonons and their dependence on spin structure and excitations have not been adequately explored. In this work, we probe and critically examine the vibrational properties of bulk $CrCl_3$ using inelastic neutron scattering and density functional theory. We demonstrate that magnetic and van der Waals interactions are essential to describing the structure and phonons in $CrCl_3$; however, the specific spin configuration is unimportant. This provides context for understanding thermal transport measurements as governed by dynamical spin-lattice couplings. More importantly, we introduce an efficient dynamic method that exploits translational symmetries in large conventional unit cells that generates insights into phonon dispersions, interactions, and measured spectra in terms of quantum phase interference conditions. This work opens new avenues for understanding phonons in layered magnets and more generally in conventional cell geometries of a variety of materials.

Combining deep learning and crowdsourcing geo-images to predict housing quality in rural China

Housing quality is an essential proxy for regional wealth, security and health. Understanding the distribution of housing quality is crucial for unveiling rural development status and providing political proposals. However, present rural house quality data highly depends on a top-down, time-consuming survey at the national or provincial level but fails to unpack the housing quality at the village level. To fill the gap between accurately depicting rural housing quality conditions and deficient data,we collect massive rural images and invite users to assess their housing quality at scale. Furthermore, a deep learning framework is proposed to automatically and efficiently predict housing quality based on crowd-sourcing rural images.

Stochastic Linear Quadratic Optimal Control Problems with Random Coefficients and Markovian Regime Switching System

This paper thoroughly investigates stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problems with the Markovian regime switching system, where the coefficients of the state equation and the weighting matrices of the cost functional are random. We prove the solvability of the stochastic Riccati equation under the uniform convexity condition and obtain the closed-loop representation of the open-loop optimal control using the unique solvability of the corresponding stochastic Riccati equation. Moreover, by applying Itô's formula with jumps, we get a representation of the cost functional on a Hilbert space, characterized as the adapted solutions of some forward-backward stochastic differential equations. We show that the necessary condition of the open-loop optimal control is the convexity of the cost functional, and the sufficient condition of the open-loop optimal control is the uniform convexity of the cost functional. In addition, we study the properties of the stochastic value flow of the stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem. Finally, as an application, we present a continuous-time mean-variance portfolio selection problem and prove its unique solvability.

Optimal Consumption with Reference to Past Spending Maximum

This paper studies the infinite-horizon optimal consumption with a path-dependent reference under exponential utility. The performance is measured by the difference between the nonnegative consumption rate and a fraction of the historical consumption maximum. The consumption running maximum process is chosen as an auxiliary state process, and hence the value function depends on two state variables. The Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation can be heuristically expressed in a piecewise manner across different regions to take into account all constraints. By employing the dual transform and smooth-fit principle, some thresholds of the wealth variable are derived such that a classical solution to the HJB equation and the feedback optimal investment and consumption strategies can be obtained in closed form in each region. A complete proof of the verification theorem is provided, and numerical examples are presented to illustrate some financial implications.

Phonon Chirality Induced by Vibronic-Orbital Coupling

The notion that phonons can carry pseudo-angular momentum has become popular in the last decade, with recent research efforts highlighting phonon chirality, Berry curvature of phonon band structure, and the phonon Hall effect. When a phonon is resonantly coupled to a crystal electric field excitation, a so-called vibronic bound state forms. Here, we observe angular momentum transfer of $δ$Jz = $\pm$1$\hbar$ between phonons and an orbital state in a vibronic bound state of a candidate quantum spin liquid. This observation has profound implications for the engineering of phonon band structure topology through chiral quasiparticle interactions.

Distributed Q-Learning for Stochastic LQ Control with Unknown Uncertainty

This paper studies a discrete-time stochastic control problem with linear quadratic criteria over an infinite-time horizon. We focus on a class of control systems whose system matrices are associated with random parameters involving unknown statistical properties. In particular, we design a distributed Q-learning algorithm to tackle the Riccati equation and derive the optimal controller stabilizing the system. The key technique is that we convert the problem of solving the Riccati equation into deriving the zero point of a matrix equation and devise a distributed stochastic approximation method to compute the estimates of the zero point. The convergence analysis proves that the distributed Q-learning algorithm converges to the correct value eventually. A numerical example sheds light on that the distributed Q-learning algorithm converges asymptotically.

Nearly-Resonant Crystalline-Phononic Coupling in Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate CsYbSe$_2$

CsYbSe$_2$, a recently identified quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate, exhibits strong crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. Here, we identify phonon and CEF modes with Raman spectroscopy and observe strong CEF-phonon mixing resulting in a vibronic bound state. Complex, mesoscale interplay between phonon modes and CEF modes is observed in real space, and an unexpected nearly resonant condition is satisfied, yielding up to fifth-order combination modes, with a total of 17 modes identified in the spectra. This study paves the way to coherent control of possible QSL ground states with optically accessible CEF-phonon manifolds and mesoscale engineering of CEF-phonon interactions.

Stochastic Linear Quadratic Optimal Control Problem: A Reinforcement Learning Method

This paper applies a reinforcement learning (RL) method to solve infinite horizon continuous-time stochastic linear quadratic problems, where drift and diffusion terms in the dynamics may depend on both the state and control. Based on Bellman's dynamic programming principle, an online RL algorithm is presented to attain the optimal control with just partial system information. This algorithm directly computes the optimal control rather than estimating the system coefficients and solving the related Riccati equation. It just requires local trajectory information, greatly simplifying the calculation processing. Two numerical examples are carried out to shed light on our theoretical findings.

Broadband acoustic invisibility and illusions

Rendering objects invisible to impinging acoustic waves (cloaking) and creating acoustic illusions (holography) has been attempted using active and passive approaches. While passive methods are applicable only to narrow frequency bands, active approaches attempt to respond dynamically, interfering with broadband incident or scattered wavefields by emitting secondary waves. Without prior knowledge of the primary wavefield, the signals for the secondary sources need to be estimated and adapted in real-time. This has thus far impeded active cloaking and holography for broadband wavefields. We present experimental results of active acoustic cloaking and holography without prior knowledge of the wavefield so that objects remain invisible and illusions intact even for broadband moving sources. This opens novel research directions and facilitates practical applications including architectural acoustics, and stealth.

Transient Hydrodynamic Lattice Cooling by Picosecond Laser Irradiation of Graphite

Recent theories and experiments have suggested hydrodynamic phonon transport features in graphite at unusually high temperatures. Here, we report a pico-second pump-probe thermal reflectance measurement of heat pulse propagation in graphite. The measurement results reveal transient lattice cooling near the adiabatic center of a 15 $μ$m diameter ring-shape pump beam at temperatures between 80 and 120 K. While such lattice cooling has not been reported in recent diffraction measurements of second sound in graphite, the observation here is consistent with both hydrodynamic phonon transport theory and prior heat pulse measurements of second sound in bulk sodium fluoride.

Mean-Field Linear-Quadratic Stochastic Differential Games in an Infinite Horizon

This paper is concerned with two-person mean-field linear-quadratic non-zero sum stochastic differential games in an infinite horizon. Both open-loop and closed-loop Nash equilibria are introduced. Existence of an open-loop Nash equilibrium is characterized by the solvability of a system of mean-field forward-backward stochastic differential equations in an infinite horizon and the convexity of the cost functionals, and the closed-loop representation of an open-loop Nash equilibrium is given through the solution to a system of two coupled non-symmetric algebraic Riccati equations. The existence of a closed-loop Nash equilibrium is characterized by the solvability of a system of two coupled symmetric algebraic Riccati equations. Two-person mean-field linear-quadratic zero-sum stochastic differential games in an infinite time horizon are also considered. Both the existence of open-loop and closed-loop saddle points are characterized by the solvability of a system of two coupled generalized algebraic Riccati equations with static stabilizing solutions. Mean-field linear-quadratic stochastic optimal control problems in an infinite horizon are discussed as well, for which it is proved that the open-loop solvability and closed-loop solvability are equivalent.

Deep-Learning-Enabled Inverse Engineering of Multi-Wavelength Invisibility-to-Superscattering Switching with Phase-Change Materials

Inverse design of nanoparticles for desired scattering spectra and dynamic switching between the two opposite scattering anomalies, i.e. superscattering and invisibility, is important in realizing cloaking, sensing and functional devices. However, traditionally the design process is quite complicated, which involves complex structures with many choices of synthetic constituents and dispersions. Here, we demonstrate that a well-trained deep-learning neural network can handle these issues efficiently, which can not only forwardly predict scattering spectra of multilayer nanoparticles with high precision, but also inversely design the required structural and material parameters efficiently. Moreover, we show that the neural network is capable of finding out multi-wavelength invisibility-to-superscattering switching points at the desired wavelengths in multilayer nanoparticles composed of metals and phase-change materials. Our work provides a useful solution of deep learning for inverse design of nanoparticles with dynamic scattering spectra by using phase-change materials.

A Histogram Thresholding Improvement to Mask R-CNN for Scalable Segmentation of New and Old Rural Buildings

Mapping new and old buildings are of great significance for understanding socio-economic development in rural areas. In recent years, deep neural networks have achieved remarkable building segmentation results in high-resolution remote sensing images. However, the scarce training data and the varying geographical environments have posed challenges for scalable building segmentation. This study proposes a novel framework based on Mask R-CNN, named HTMask R-CNN, to extract new and old rural buildings even when the label is scarce. The framework adopts the result of single-object instance segmentation from the orthodox Mask R-CNN. Further, it classifies the rural buildings into new and old ones based on a dynamic grayscale threshold inferred from the result of a two-object instance segmentation task where training data is scarce. We found that the framework can extract more buildings and achieve a much higher mean Average Precision (mAP) than the orthodox Mask R-CNN model. We tested the novel framework's performance with increasing training data and found that it converged even when the training samples were limited. This framework's main contribution is to allow scalable segmentation by using significantly fewer training samples than traditional machine learning practices. That makes mapping China's new and old rural buildings viable.

Indefinite Mean-Field Type Linear-Quadratic Stochastic Optimal Control Problems

This paper focuses on indefinite stochastic mean-field linear-quadratic (MF-LQ, for short) optimal control problems, which allow the weighting matrices for state and control in the cost functional to be indefinite. The solvability of stochastic Hamiltonian system and Riccati equations is presented under both positive definite case and indefinite case. The optimal controls in open-loop form and closed-loop form are obtained, respectively. Moreover, the dynamic mean-variance problem can be solved within the framework of the indefinite MF-LQ problem. Other two examples shed light on the theoretical results established.

Quantitative imaging for complex-objects via a single-pixel detector

Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is important in many applications such as microscopy and crystallography. To quantitatively reveal phase information, people could either employ interference to map phase distribution into intensity fringes, or analyze intensity-only diffraction patterns through phase retrieval algorithms. Traditionally, both of these two ways use pixelated detectors. In this work, a novel QPI scheme is reported inspired by single-pixel camera (SPC), which adopts the principle of SPC that retrieves images through structured illumination and corresponding single-pixel signals. Particularly for complex-valued imaging, the structured illumination is performed in the phase domain, and a point detector with restricted sensor size detects the intensity of zero-frequency area. Based on the illumination structures and point signals, a complex image is reconstructed by running a phase retrieval algorithm. This approach is universal for various wavelengths, and needs no a priori information of the targets. Both simulation and experiment show that our single-pixel QPI scheme exhibits great performance even with objects in an extremely rough phase distribution.

Optimal Control for Discrete-time NCSs with Input Delay and Markovian Packet Losses: Hold-Input Case

This paper is concerned with the linear quadratic optimal control problem for networked system simultaneously with input delay and Markovian dropout. Different from the results in the literature, we consider the hold-input strategy, which is much more computationally complicated than zero-input strategy, but much better in most cases especially in the transition phase. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of optimal control problem over a finite horizon are given by the coupled difference Riccati-type equations. Moreover, the networked control system is mean-square stability if and only if the coupled algebraic Riccati-type equations have a particular solution. The key technique in this paper is to tackle the forward and backward difference equations, which are more difficult to be dealt with, due to the adaptability of controller and the temporal correlation caused by simultaneous input delay and Markovian jump.

Optimal control and stablilization for linear continuous-time mean-field systems with delay

This paper studies optimal control and stabilization problems for continuous-time mean-field systems with input delay, which are the fundamental development of control and stabilization problems for mean-field systems. There are two main contributions: 1) To the best of our knowledge, the present paper is first to establish the necessary and sufficient solvability condition for this kind of optimal control problem with delay, and to derive an optimal controller through overcoming the obstacle that separation principle no longer holds for multiplicative-noise systems; 2) For the stabilization problem, under the assumption of exact observability, we strictly prove thatthe system is stabilizable if and only if the algebraic Riccati equation has a unique positive definite solution.

A stochastic maximum principle for partially observed stochastic control systems with delay

This paper deals with partially-observed optimal control problems for the state governed by stochastic differential equation with delay. We develop a stochastic maximum principle for this kind of optimal control problems using a variational method and a filtering technique. Also, we establish a sufficient condition without assumption of the concavity. Two examples shed light on the theoretical results are established in the paper. In particular, in the example of an optimal investment problem with delay, its numerical simulation shows the effect of delay via a discretization technique for forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) with delay and anticipate terms.
