Simultaneous blockade of a photon phonon, and magnon induced by a two-level atom

The hybrid microwave optomechanical-magnetic system has recently emerged as a promising candidate for coherent information processing because of the ultrastrong microwave photon-magnon coupling and the longlife of the magnon and phonon. As a quantum information processing device, the realization of a single excitation holds special meaning for the hybrid system. In this paper, we introduce a single two-level atom into the optomechanical-magnetic system and show that an unconventional blockade due to destructive interference cannot offer a blockade of both the photon and magnon. Meanwhile, under the condition of single excitation resonance, the blockade of the photon, phonon, and magnon can be achieved simultaneously even in a weak optomechanical region, but the phonon blockade still requires the cryogenic temperature condition.

Remote weak signal measurement via bound states in optomechanical system

A scheme for remote weak signal sensor is proposed in which a coupled resonator optical waveguide~(CROW), as a transmitter, couples to a hybrid optomechanical cavity and an observing cavity, respectively. The non-Markovian theory is employed to study the weak force sensor by treating the CROW as a non-Markovian reservoir of the cavity fields, and the negative-effective-mass~(NEM) oscillator is introduced to cancel the back-action noise. Under certain conditions, dissipationless bound states can be formed such that weak signal can be transferred in the CROW without dissipation. Our results show that ultrahigh sensitivity can be achieved with the assistance of the bound states under certain parameters regime.

China's First Workforce Skill Taxonomy

China is the world's second largest economy. After four decades of economic miracles, China's economy is transitioning into an advanced, knowledge-based economy. Yet, we still lack a detailed understanding of the skills that underly the Chinese labor force, and the development and spatial distribution of these skills. For example, the US standardized skill taxonomy O*NET played an important role in understanding the dynamics of manufacturing and knowledge-based work, as well as potential risks from automation and outsourcing. Here, we use Machine Learning techniques to bridge this gap, creating China's first workforce skill taxonomy, and map it to O*NET. This enables us to reveal workforce skill polarization into social-cognitive skills and sensory-physical skills, and to explore the China's regional inequality in light of workforce skills, and compare it to traditional metrics such as education. We build an online tool for the public and policy makers to explore the skill taxonomy: skills.sysu.edu.cn. We will also make the taxonomy dataset publicly available for other researchers upon publication.

Anticipated backward stochastic differential equations with quadratic growth

In this paper, we study the solvability of anticipated backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs, for short) with quadratic growth for one-dimensional case and multi-dimensional case. In these BSDEs, the generator, which is of quadratic growth in Z, involves not only the present information of solution (Y, Z) but also its future one. The existence and uniqueness of such BSDEs, under different conditions, are derived for several terminal situations, including small terminal value, bounded terminal value and unbounded terminal value.

Weak Closed-Loop Solvability of Stochastic Linear Quadratic Optimal Control Problems of Markovian Regime Switching System

In this paper, we investigate the open-loop and weak closed-loop solvabilities of stochastic linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem of Markovian regime switching system. Interestingly, these two solvabilities are equivalent. We first provide an alternative characterization of the open-loop solvability of the LQ problem using the perturbation approach. Then, we study the weak closed-loop solvability of the LQ problem of Markovian regime switching system, and establish the equivalent relationship between open-loop and weak closed-loop solvabilities. Finally, we present an example to illustrate the procedure for finding weak closed-loop optimal strategies within the framework of Markovian regime switching system.

Automation Impacts on China's Polarized Job Market

When facing threats from automation, a worker residing in a large Chinese city might not be as lucky as a worker in a large U.S. city, depending on the type of large city in which one resides. Empirical studies found that large U.S. cities exhibit resilience to automation impacts because of the increased occupational and skill specialization. However, in this study, we observe polarized responses in large Chinese cities to automation impacts. The polarization might be attributed to the elaborate master planning of the central government, through which cities are assigned with different industrial goals to achieve globally optimal economic success and, thus, a fast-growing economy. By dividing Chinese cities into two groups based on their administrative levels and premium resources allocated by the central government, we find that Chinese cities follow two distinct industrial development trajectories, one trajectory owning government support leads to a diversified industrial structure and, thus, a diversified job market, and the other leads to specialty cities and, thus, a specialized job market. By revisiting the automation impacts on a polarized job market, we observe a Simpson's paradox through which a larger city of a diversified job market results in greater resilience, whereas larger cities of specialized job markets are more susceptible. These findings inform policy makers to deploy appropriate policies to mitigate the polarized automation impacts.

The inverted U-shaped effect of urban hotspots spatial compactness on urban economic growth

The compact city, as a sustainable concept, is intended to augment the efficiency of urban function. However, previous studies have concentrated more on morphology than on structure. The present study focuses on urban structural elements, i.e., urban hotspots consisting of high-density and high-intensity socioeconomic zones, and explores the economic performance associated with their spatial structure. We use nighttime luminosity (NTL) data and the Loubar method to identify and extract the hotspot and ultimately draw two conclusions. First, with population increasing, the hotspot number scales sublinearly with an exponent of approximately 0.50~0.55, regardless of the location in China, the EU or the US, while the intersect values are totally different, which is mainly due to different economic developmental level. Secondly, we demonstrate that the compactness of hotspots imposes an inverted U-shaped influence on economic growth, which implies that an optimal compactness coefficient does exist. These findings are helpful for urban planning.

Mean Field Game for Linear Quadratic Stochastic Recursive Systems

This paper focuses on linear-quadratic (LQ for short) mean-field games described by forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs for short), in which the individual control region is postulated to be convex. The decentralized strategies and consistency condition are represented by a kind of coupled mean-field FBSDEs with projection operators. The well-posedness of consistency condition system is obtained using the monotonicity condition method. The $ε$-Nash equilibrium property is discussed as well.

Optimal Control of Markov Regime-Switching Stochastic Recursive Utilities

In this paper, we establish a general stochastic maximum principle for optimal control for systems described by a continuous-time Markov regime-switching stochastic recursive utilities model. The control domain is postulated not to be convex, and the diffusion terms depend on control variables. To this end, we first study a kind of classical forward stochastic optimal control problems. Afterwards, based on previous results, we introduce two groups of new first and second-order adjoint equations. The corresponding variational equations for forward-backward stochastic differential equations are derived. In particular, the generator in the maximum principle contains solutions of second-order adjoint equation which is novel. Some interesting examples are concluded as well.

Hydrodynamic Phonon Transport: Past, Present, and Prospect

The hydrodynamic phonon transport was studied several decades ago for verifying the quantum theory of lattice thermal transport. Recent prediction of significant hydrodynamic phonon transport in graphitic materials shows its practical importance for high thermal conductivity materials and brought a renewed attention. As the study on this topic has been inactive to some extent for several decades, we aim at providing a brief overview of the past studies as well as very recent studies. The topics we discuss in this chapter include the collective motion of phonons, several approaches to solve the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation for hydrodynamic phonon transport, the role of normal scattering for thermal resistance, and the propagation of second sound. Then, we close this chapter with our perspectives for the future studies and the practical implication of hydrodynamic phonon transport.

Optomechanical quadrature squeezing in the non-Markovian regime

Squeezing of quantum fluctuation plays an important role in fundamental quantum physics and has marked influence on ultrasensitive detection. We propose a scheme to generate and enhance the squeezing of mechanical mode by exposing the optomechanical system to a non-Markovian environment. It is shown that the effective parametric resonance term of mechanical mode can be induced due to the interaction with cavity and non-Markovian reservoir, thus resulting in quadrature squeezing of the mechanical resonator. And jointing the two kinds of interactions can enhance the squeezing effect. Comparing with the usual Markovian regime, we can obtain stronger squeezing, and significantly the squeezing can approach a low asymptotic stable value.

Crossover of ballistic, hydrodynamic, and diffusive phonon transport in suspended graphene

Hydrodynamic phonon transport was recently predicted as an important regime for phonon transport in graphitic materials. Many of past studies on hydrodynamic phonon transport have focused on the cases where the hydrodynamic regime predominates over other regimes such that hydrodynamic features can be clearly observed. However, this often requires stringent conditions of temperature and sample size. In many cases, a single regime does not dominate other regimes, but all three regimes - ballistic, hydrodynamic, and diffusive regimes - exist to some extent. Here we assess the extent of three regimes by comparing momentum destruction rates by three different mechanisms, each of which represents a different regime: diffuse boundary scattering without internal phonon scattering (ballistic regime), diffuse boundary scattering combined with normal scattering (hydrodynamic regime), and umklapp scattering (diffusive regime). We solve the Peierls-Boltzmann equation with an ab initio full scattering matrix using a deviational Monte Carlo method. We sample distribution functions of ballistic and scattered particles separately, and thereby compare the momentum destruction rates by the three different mechanisms. Using this framework, we discuss a well-known phenomenon of ballistic-to-hydrodynamic crossover, called phonon Knudsen minimum.

Thermal resistance by transition between collective and non-collective phonon flows in graphitic materials

Phonons in graphitic materials exhibit strong normal scattering (N-scattering) compared to umklapp scattering (U-scattering). The strong N-scattering cause collective phonon flow, unlike the relatively common cases where U-scattering is dominant. If graphitic materials have finite size and contact with hot and cold reservoirs emitting phonons with non-collective distribution, N-scattering change the non-collective phonon flow to the collective phonon flow near the interface between graphitic material and a heat reservoir. We study the thermal resistance by N-scattering during the transition between non-collective and collective phonon flows. Our Monte Carlo solution of Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation shows that the N-scattering in graphitic materials reduce heat flux from the ballistic case by around 15%, 30%, and 40% at 100, 200, and 300 K, respectively. This is significantly larger than ~ 5% reduction of Debye crystal with similar Debye temperature (~ 2300 K). We associate the large reduction of heat flux by N-scattering with the non-linear dispersion and multiple phonon branches with different group velocities of graphitic materials.

Improve Microwave Quantum Illumination Via Optical Parametric Amplifier

Quantum illumination is a quantum-optical sensing technique in which an entangled source is exploited to improve the detection of a low-reflectivity object that is immersed in a bright thermal background. Entangled sources between microwave and optical fields can be exploited to improve detection in microwave quantum illumination technique. We proposed a scheme to enhance the entanglement between the output fields of microwave and optical cavity by introducing optical parametric amplifier medium in cavity optomechanical system. We show that improving signal-to-noise ratio and decreasing error probability of detection can be obtained consequently even for objects with low reflectivity in the presence of optical parametric amplifier.

Open-Loop and Closed-Loop Solvabilities for Stochastic Linear Quadratic Optimal Control Problems of Markov Regime-Switching System

This paper investigates the stochastic linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem of Markov regime switching system. The representation of the cost functional for the stochastic LQ optimal control problem of Markov regime switching system is derived using the technique of It{ô}'s formula. For the stochastic LQ optimal control problem of Markov regime switching system, we establish the equivalence between the open-loop (closed-loop) solvability and the existence of an adapted solution to the corresponding forward-backward stochastic differential equation with constraint (the existence of a regular solution to the Riccati equation). Also, we analyze the interrelationship between the strongly regular solvability of the Riccati equation and the uniform convexity of the cost functional.

Mixed Equilibrium Solution of Time-Inconsistent Stochastic LQ Problem

In this paper, we propose a novel equilibrium solution notion for the time-inconsistent stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem. This notion is called the mixed equilibrium solution, which consists of two parts: a pure-feedback-strategy part and an open-loop-control part. When the pure-feedback-strategy part is zero or the open-loop-control part does not depend on the initial state, the mixed equilibrium solution reduces to the open-loop equilibrium control and the feedback equilibrium strategy, respectively. Using a maximum-principle-like methodology with forward-backward stochastic difference equations, a necessary and sufficient condition is established to characterize the existence of a mixed equilibrium solution. Then, by decoupling the forward-backward stochastic difference equations, three sets of difference equations, which together portray the existence of a mixed equilibrium solution, are obtained. Moreover, the case with a fixed time-state initial pair and the case with all the initial pairs are separately investigated. Furthermore, an example is constructed to show that the mixed equilibrium solution exists for all the initial pairs, although neither the open-loop equilibrium control nor the feedback equilibrium strategy exists for some initial pairs.

Optimal Control of Constrained Stochastic Linear-Quadratic Model with Applications

This paper studies a class of continuous-time scalar-state stochastic Linear-Quadratic (LQ) optimal control problem with the linear control constraints. Applying the state separation theorem induced from its special structure, we develop the explicit solution for this class of problem. The revealed optimal control policy is a piece-wise affine function of system state. This control policy can be computed efficiently by solving two Riccati equations off-line. Under some mild conditions, the stationary optimal control policy can be also derived for this class of problem with infinite horizon. This result can be used to solve the constrained dynamic mean-variance portfolio selection problem. Examples shed light on the solution procedure of implementing our method.

Equilibrium Solutions of Multi-Period Mean-Variance Portfolio Selection

This is a companion paper of [Mixed equilibrium solution of time-inconsistent stochastic LQ problem, arXiv:1802.03032], where general theory has been established to characterize the open-loop equilibrium control, feedback equilibrium strategy and mixed equilibrium solution for a time-inconsistent stochastic linear-quadratic problem. This note is, on the one hand to test the developed theory of that paper, and on the other hand to push the solvability of multi-period mean-variance portfolio selection. A nondegenerate assumption has been removed in this note, which is popular in existing literature about multi-period mean-variance portfolio selection; and neat conditions have been obtained to characterize the existence of equilibrium solutions.
