The Imaging Time-of-Propagation Detector at Belle II

We report on the construction, operation, and performance of the Time-of-Propagation detector with imaging used for the Belle II experiment running at the Super-KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. This detector is located in the central barrel region and uses Cherenkov light to provide particle identification among hadrons. The Cherenkov light is radiated in highly polished bars of synthetic fused silica (quartz) and transported to the ends of the bars via total internal reflection. One bar end is instrumented with finely segmented micro-channel-plate photomultiplier tubes to record the light, while the other end has a mirror attached to reflect the photons back to the instrumented end. Both the propagation times and hit positions of the Cherenkov photons are measured; these depend on the Cherenkov angle and together provide good discrimination among charged pions, kaons, and protons with momenta up to around 4 GeV/$c$. To date, the detector has been used to record and analyze almost 600 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data.

Demonstration of a 25-picosecond single-photon time resolution with gaseous photomultiplication

Photosensitive gaseous detectors with a simple photoelectron multiplication mechanism of resistive plate chambers (RPCs) are expected to have both a large photocoverage and an excellent time resolution and to be low-cost. To demonstrate the time resolution of the RPC-based photodetectors, we built a prototype detector with a LaB$_6$ photocathode. It was tested with a picosecond pulse laser and the intrinsic time resolution for single photons was measured to be $25.0 \pm 1.1$ ps at a gain of $3.3 \times 10^6$.

Observation of inverse magnetocaloric effect in magnetic-field-induced austenite phase of Heusler Alloys Ni50-xCoxMn31.5Ga18.5 (x = 9 and 9.7)

Magnetocaloric effect (MCE), magnetization, specific heat, and magnetostriction measurements were performed in both pulsed and steady high magnetic fields to investigate the magnetocaloric properties of Heusler alloys Ni50-xCoxMn31.5Ga18.5 (x = 9 and 9.7). From direct MCE measurements for Ni41Co9Mn31.5Ga18.5 up to 56 T, a steep temperature drop was observed for magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformation (MFIMT), designated as inverse MCE. Remarkably, this inverse MCE is apparent not only with MFIMT, but also in the magnetic-field-induced austenite phase. Specific heat measurements under steady high magnetic fields revealed that the magnetic field variation of the electronic entropy plays a dominant role in the unconventional magnetocaloric properties of these materials. First-principles based calculations performed for Ni41Co9Mn31.5Ga18.5 and Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 revealed that the magnetic-field-induced austenite phase of Ni41Co9Mn31.5Ga18.5 is more unstable than that of Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 and that it is sensitive to slight tetragonal distortion. We conclude that the inverse MCE in the magnetic-field-induced austenite phase is realized by marked change in the electronic entropy through tetragonal distortion induced by the externally applied magnetic field.

Remarks on positive solutions to nonlinear problems and numerical methods

The existence of positive solutions to the system of ordinary differential equations related to the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction is established. The key idea is to use successive approximation of solutions, ensuring its positivity. To obtain the positivity and invariant region for numerical solutions, the system is discretized as difference equations of explicit form, employing operator splitting methods with linear stability conditions.

Flavor Mixing in the Gauge-Higgs Unification

Gauge-Higgs unification is the fascinating scenario solving the hierarchy problem without supersymmetry. In this scenario, the Standard Model (SM) Higgs doublet is identified with extra component of the gauge field in higher dimensions and its mass becomes finite and stable under quantum corrections due to the higher dimensional gauge symmetry. On the other hand, Yukawa coupling is provided by the gauge coupling, which seems to mean that the flavor mixing and CP violation do not arise at it stands. In this talk, we discuss that the flavor mixing is originated from simultaneously non-diagonalizable bulk and brane mass matrices. Then, this mechanism is applied to various flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes via Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge boson exchange at tree level and constraints for compactification scale are obtained.

A Search for sub-TeV Gamma-rays from the Vela Pulsar Region with CANGAROO-III

We made stereoscopic observations of the Vela Pulsar region with two of the 10 m diameter CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in January and February, 2004, in a search for sub-TeV gamma-rays from the pulsar and surrounding regions. We describe the observations, provide a detailed account of the calibration methods, and introduce the improved and bias-free analysis techniques employed for CANGAROO-III data. No evidence of gamma-ray emission is found from either the pulsar position or the previously reported position offset by 0.13 degree, and the resulting upper limits are a factor of five less than the previously reported flux from observations with the CANGAROO-I 3.8 m telescope. Following the recent report by the H.E.S.S. group of TeV gamma-ray emission from the Pulsar Wind Nebula, which is $\sim$0.5 degree south of the pulsar position, we examined this region and found supporting evidence for emission extended over $\sim$0.6 degree.
