Rolling quantum dice with a superconducting qubit

One of the key challenges in quantum information is coherently manipulating the quantum state. However, it is an outstanding question whether control can be realized with low error. Only gates from the Clifford group -- containing $π$, $π/2$, and Hadamard gates -- have been characterized with high accuracy. Here, we show how the Platonic solids enable implementing and characterizing larger gate sets. We find that all gates can be implemented with low error. The results fundamentally imply arbitrary manipulation of the quantum state can be realized with high precision, providing new practical possibilities for designing efficient quantum algorithms.

Linear Fringe Field Effects of Quadrupoles

Fringe field becomes important when one requires more accurate modeling of a ring lattice to study the long-term beam dynamics in storage rings and deal with large aperture magnets in high-intensity proton synchrotrons or accumulator rings. In this paper, a simple expression to calculate the tune shifts due to quadrupole fringe fields is derived by using Lie algebra technique. With higher-order terms included, this method is more accurate compared with the linear fringe field model used in SAD code. The method is also applied to a BEPCII lattice. Also based on the Lie algebra technique and an inverse series technique, an equivalent hard-edge model for quadrupoles is proposed, in which the model parameters are derived analytically. The model has the advantages of the direct calculation of the equivalent length and strength of a quadrupole and the easy adaptation when the strength changes. The validity of the model and its simplified version has been checked with a numerical method, and they show very good agreements.

Non linear difference equations arising from a deformation of the q-Laguerre weight

We study, in this paper, a one parameter deformation of the $q-$Laguerre weight function. An investigation is made on the polynomials orthogonal with respect to such a weight. With the aid of the two compatibility conditions previously obtained in \cite{Chen-Ism} and the $q-$analog of a sum rule obtained in this paper, we derive expressions for the recurrence coefficients in terms of certain auxiliary quantities, and show that these quantities satisfy a pair of first order non linear difference equations. These difference equations are similar in form to the recognized asymmetric discrete Painleve systems such as $αq-$P-IV and $αq-$P-V.

Update on the MiniCLEAN Dark Matter Experiment

The direct search for dark matter is entering a period of increased sensitivity to the hypothetical Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP). One such technology that is being examined is a scintillation only noble liquid experiment, MiniCLEAN. MiniCLEAN utilizes over 500 kg of liquid cryogen to detect nuclear recoils from WIMP dark matter and serves as a demonstration for a future detector of order 50 to 100 tonnes. The liquid cryogen is interchangeable between argon and neon to study the A$^{2}$ dependence of the potential signal and examine backgrounds. MiniCLEAN utilizes a unique modular design with spherical geometry to maximize the light yield using cold photomultiplier tubes in a single-phase detector. Pulse shape discrimination techniques are used to separate nuclear recoil signals from electron recoil backgrounds. MiniCLEAN will be spiked with additional $^{39}$Ar to demonstrate the effective reach of the pulse shape discrimination capability. Assembly of the experiment is underway at SNOLAB and an update on the project is given.

Search for Low-Mass WIMPs with SuperCDMS

We report a first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using the background rejection capabilities of SuperCDMS. An exposure of 577 kg-days was analyzed for WIMPs with mass < 30 GeV/c2, with the signal region blinded. Eleven events were observed after unblinding. We set an upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section of 1.2e-42 cm2 at 8 GeV/c2. This result is in tension with WIMP interpretations of recent experiments and probes new parameter space for WIMP-nucleon scattering for WIMP masses < 6 GeV/c2.

On Newton non-degeneracy of polynomial mappings

We introduce a new non-degeneracy condition at infinity for a real or a mixed polynomial mapping $F$ which allows us to approximate its bifurcation locus in terms of certain Newton polyhedra. We derive a sufficiency result for the Jacobian problem in the setting of mixed mappings.

Optimal quantum control using randomized benchmarking

We present a method for optimizing quantum control in experimental systems, using a subset of randomized benchmarking measurements to rapidly infer error. This is demonstrated to improve single- and two-qubit gates, minimize gate bleedthrough, where a gate mechanism can cause errors on subsequent gates, and identify control crosstalk in superconducting qubits. This method is able to correct parameters to where control errors no longer dominate, and is suitable for automated and closed-loop optimization of experimental systems.

Anisotropic superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric BiPd

We report measurements of London penetration depth $λ(T)$ for the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd by using a tunnel diode oscillator. Pronounced anisotropic behavior is observed in the low-temperature penetration depth; the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ac}(T)$ follows an exponential decrease, but the interplane penetration depth $λ_b(T)$ shows power-law-type behavior. The superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$, converted from the penetration depth $λ(T)$, is best fitted by an anisotropic two-band BCS model. We argue that such a complex order parameter is attributed to the admixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing states as a result of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling in BiPd.

Logic gates at the surface code threshold: Superconducting qubits poised for fault-tolerant quantum computing

A quantum computer can solve hard problems - such as prime factoring, database searching, and quantum simulation - at the cost of needing to protect fragile quantum states from error. Quantum error correction provides this protection, by distributing a logical state among many physical qubits via quantum entanglement. Superconductivity is an appealing platform, as it allows for constructing large quantum circuits, and is compatible with microfabrication. For superconducting qubits the surface code is a natural choice for error correction, as it uses only nearest-neighbour coupling and rapidly-cycled entangling gates. The gate fidelity requirements are modest: The per-step fidelity threshold is only about 99%. Here, we demonstrate a universal set of logic gates in a superconducting multi-qubit processor, achieving an average single-qubit gate fidelity of 99.92% and a two-qubit gate fidelity up to 99.4%. This places Josephson quantum computing at the fault-tolerant threshold for surface code error correction. Our quantum processor is a first step towards the surface code, using five qubits arranged in a linear array with nearest-neighbour coupling. As a further demonstration, we construct a five-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state using the complete circuit and full set of gates. The results demonstrate that Josephson quantum computing is a high-fidelity technology, with a clear path to scaling up to large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum circuits.

The nature of [S III]λλ9096, 9532 emitters at z = 1.34 and 1.23

A study of [S III]$λ\lambda9096,9532$ emitters at $z$ = 1.34 and 1.23 is presented using our deep narrow-band $H_2S1$ (centered at 2.13 $μ$m) imaging survey of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS). We combine our data with multi-wavelength data of ECDFS to build up spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the $U$ to the $K_{s}$-band for emitter candidates selected with strong excess in $H_2S1 - K_{s}$ and derive photometric redshifts, line luminosities, stellar masses and extinction. A sample of 14 [S III] emitters are identified with $H_2S1<22.8$ and $K_{\rm s}<24.8$ (AB) over 381 arcmin$^{2}$ area, having [S III] line luminosity $L_{[SIII]}= \sim 10^{41.5-42.6}$erg s$^{-1}$. None of the [S III] emitters is found to have X-ray counterpart in the deepest Chandra 4 Ms observation, suggesting that they are unlikely powered by AGN. HST/ACS F606W and HST/WFC3 F160W images show their rest-frame UV and optical morphologies. About half of the [S III] emitters are mergers and at least one third are disk-type galaxies. Nearly all [S III] emitters exhibit a prominent Balmer break in their SEDs, indicating the presence of a significant post-starburst component. Taken together, our results imply that both shock heating in post-starburst and photoionization caused by young massive stars are likely to excite strong [S III] emission lines. We conclude that the emitters in our sample are dominated by star-forming galaxies with stellar mass $8.7<\log (M/M_{sun})<9.9$.

Energy Spectrum of Cosmic Protons and Helium Nuclei by a Hybrid Measurement at 4300 m a.s.l

The energy spectrum of cosmic Hydrogen and Helium nuclei has been measured, below the so-called "knee", by using a hybrid experiment with a wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope and the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) array of the ARGO-YBJ experiment at 4300 m above sea level. The Hydrogen and Helium nuclei have been well separated from other cosmic ray components by using a multi-parameter technique. A highly uniform energy resolution of about 25% is achieved throughout the whole energy range (100 TeV - 700 TeV). The observed energy spectrum is compatible with a single power law with index gamma=-2.63+/-0.06.

Fast Scalable State Measurement with Superconducting Qubits

Progress in superconducting qubit experiments with greater numbers of qubits or advanced techniques such as feedback requires faster and more accurate state measurement. We have designed a multiplexed measurement system with a bandpass filter that allows fast measurement without increasing environmental damping of the qubits. We use this to demonstrate simultaneous measurement of four qubits on a single superconducting integrated circuit, the fastest of which can be measured to 99.8% accuracy in 140ns. This accuracy and speed is suitable for advanced multi-qubit experiments including surface code error correction.

Spectral measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation amplitude and frequency at Daya Bay

A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos ($\overlineν_{e}$) from six $2.9$ GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude $\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009} $ and the first direct measurement of the $\overlineν_{e}$ mass-squared difference $|Δm^{2}_{ee}|= (2.59_{-0.20}^{+0.19}) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2 $ is obtained using the observed $\overlineν_{e}$ rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of $|Δm^{2}_{ee}|$ is consistent with $|Δm^{2}_{μμ}|$ measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

Observation of Energetic particles between a pair of Corotating Interaction Regions

We report observations of the acceleration and trapping of energetic ions and electrons between a pair of corotating interaction regions (CIRs). The event occurred in Carrington Rotation 2060. Observed at spacecraft STEREO-B, the two CIRs were separated by less than 5 days. In contrast to other CIR events, the fluxes of energetic ions and electrons in this event reached their maxima between the trailing-edge of the first CIR and the leading edge of the second CIR. The radial magnetic field (Br) reversed its sense and the anisotropy of the flux also changed from sunward to anti-sunward between the two CIRs. Furthermore, there was an extended period of counter-streaming suprathermal electrons between the two CIRs. Similar observations for this event were also obtained for ACE and STEREO-A. We conjecture that these observations were due to a "U-shape" large scale magnetic field topology connecting the reverse shock of the first CIR and the forward shock of the second CIR. Such a disconnected U-shaped magnetic field topology may have formed due to magnetic reconnection in the upper corona.

Charmonium, $D_s$ and $D_s^*$ from overlap fermion on DWF configurations

We take a new approach to determine the scale parameter $r_0$, the physical masses of strange and charm quarks through a global fit which incorporates continuum extrapolation, chiral extrapolation and quark mass interpolation to the lattice data. The charmonium and charm-strange meson spectrum are calculated with overlap valence quarks on $2+1$-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD Collaboration. We use the masses of $D_s$, $D_s^*$ and $J/ψ$ as inputs and obtain $m_c^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=1.110(24)\,{\rm GeV}$, $m_s^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=0.104(9)\,{\rm GeV}$ and $r_0=0.458(11)\,{\rm fm}$. Subsequently, the hyperfine-splitting of charmonium and $f_{D_s}$ are predicted to be $112(5)\,{\rm MeV}$ and $254(5)\,{\rm MeV}$, respectively.

Artificial Neural Network for search for metal poor galaxies

In order to find a fast and reliable method for selecting metal poor galaxies (MPGs), especially in large surveys and huge database, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) method is applied to a sample of star-forming galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 9 (DR9) provided by the Max Planck Institute and the Johns Hopkins University (MPA/JHU). A two-step approach is adopted:(i) The ANN network must be trained with a subset of objects that are known to be either MPGs or MRGs(Metal Rich galaxies), treating the strong emission line flux measurements as input feature vectors in an n-dimensional space, where n is the number of strong emission line flux ratios. (ii) After the network is trained on a sample of star-forming galaxies, remaining galaxies are classified in the automatic test analysis as either MPGs or MRGs. We consider several random divisions of the data into training and testing sets: for instance, for our sample, a total of 70 percent of the data are involved in training the algorithm, 15 percent are involved in validating the algorithm and the remaining 15 percent are used for blind testing of the resulting classifier. For target selection, we have achieved an acquisition rate for MPGs of 96 percent and 92 percent for an MPGs threshold of 12+log(O/H)=8.00 and 12+log(O/H)=8.39, respectively. Running the code takes minutes in most cases under the Matlab 2013a software environment. The ANN method can easily be extended to any MPGs target selection task when the physical property of the target can be expressed as a quantitative variable.

TeV gamma-ray survey of the Northern sky using the ARGO-YBJ detector

The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array that has been used to monitor the northern $γ$-ray sky at energies above 0.3 TeV from 2007 November to 2013 January. In this paper, we present the results of a sky survey in the declination band from $-10^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$, using data recorded over the past five years. With an integrated sensitivity ranging from 0.24 to $\sim$1 Crab units depending on the declination, six sources have been detected with a statistical significance greater than 5 standard deviations. Several excesses are also reported as potential $γ$-ray emitters. The features of each source are presented and discussed. Additionally, $95\%$ confidence level upper limits of the flux from the investigated sky region are shown. Specific upper limits for 663 GeV $γ$-ray AGNs inside the ARGO-YBJ field of view are reported. The effect of the absorption of $γ$-rays due to the interaction with extragalactic background light is estimated.
